An Investigation of the Relationship between Work Motivation (Intrinsic & Extrinsic) and Employee Engagement : A Study on Allied Bank of Pakistan

Khan, Waseem, Iqbal, Yawar January 2013 (has links)
Introduction: Work motivation (intrinsic & extrinsic) and employee engagement is the hot issues for today’s management. Employee’s motivation has been in discussion for years, different compensation plans and strategies were adopted over years to make employees more productive. Recently, the introduction of employee engagement as a new construct to business, management, and human resource management fields make it an imperative to adopt in organizational settings. Many studies made indirect link between work motivation (intrinsic & extrinsic) and employee engagement. Moreover, motivational factors (intrinsic & extrinsic) are often considered a useful tool for employee engagement. But very few studies investigated the direct relationship between work motivation (intrinsic & extrinsic) and employee engagement. Purpose: This study explored the relationship between work motivation (Intrinsic & Extrinsic) and employee engagement. Moreover, the study also examined the impact of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation on employee engagement.   Methodology: In order to fulfill the research purpose, quantitative study was adopted. Questionnaires were designed using Google survey tool. 187 questionnaires were collected from employees of Allied Bank of Pakistan. Later on, SPSS was used to perform the required test of descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, bivariate correlation, ANOVA test and multiple regression analysis.   Findings: The results of SPSS revealed strong agreement of respondents to positive relationship between intrinsic motivation and employee engagement, and extrinsic motivation and employee engagement. Four intrinsic factors namely interesting work, job appreciation, satisfaction and stress, and four extrinsic factors namely job security, good wages, promotion & growth and recognition were considered important by respondents for engagement.   Conclusion: From the findings it is concluded that there is positive relationship between intrinsic motivation and employee engagement, and extrinsic motivation and employee engagement. Furthermore, it is also accomplished that both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation has strong positive impact on employee engagement. From the results it is also concluded that the relationship and impact of extrinsic motivation was stronger on employee engagement as compared to intrinsic motivation.      The study will enrich the current literature of work motivation and employee engagement. On practical level this study will not only help practitioners and consultants but also bank management will also be equipped with useful information regarding work motivation and employee engagement in organizational settings.

The validation of an organisational climate questionnaire in a corporate pharmacy group / Andries Johannes Combrink

Combrink, Andries Johannes January 2004 (has links)
The creation of a healthy, motivating organisational climate should be the aim of management. Organisational climate refers to a complex set of forces within an organisation, which have a direct influence on those who work in it. Studying organisational climate is imperative to understanding how organisations function at their core. However, a validated instrument is needed to detect the climate in an organisation. The objective of this study was to validate an organisational climate questionnaire in a corporate pharmacy group. A cross sectional survey design was used. Interviews were conducted with employees and an organisational climate questionnaire was constructed. The Organisational Climate Questionnaire (OCC) was completed by a sample of employees in a corporate pharmacy group (N = 159). Descriptive statistics (e.g. means, standard deviations, skewness and kurtosis) inferential statistics were used to analyse the results. Factors extracted include recognition and feedback, management, work relationships, task characteristics, responsibility, work pressure and decision-making. The internal consistencies of two factors were unacceptable. One-way analysis of variance of organisational climate in different regions showed practically significant differences between North West and Mpumalanga regarding how they currently view management, as well as practically significant differences between North West and both Free State and Gauteng concerning Management. The average responses of the white employees and employees of colour in this study seem to be the same, except regarding recognition and feedback. The average responses of the employees from the two gender groups seem to be the same, except regarding responsibility and work pressure. Recommendations for future research were made. / Thesis (M.A. (Industrial Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2005.

Valstybės tarnautojų atrankos socialinis aspektas / The social aspect of the selection of civil servants

Dainytė, Julija 15 May 2006 (has links)
The paper “The social aspect of the selection of civil servants” fills in the gap in a certain sphere of scientific works on social administration. The problems of shaping of the professional competence of civil servants that are analyzed in the paper were never ever investigated before. They are even more urgent now when Lithuania is a fully entitled member of the European Union and the civil service doesn’t confirm to the expectations of the society so often. The paper consists of two parts – theoretical and practical. In the first part of this paper the most important spheres of the professional competence of civil servants, preconditions of its shaping and the specification of the selection to the post of a civil servant is discussed in detail. Present Lithuanian legal acts; the works of Lithuanian, European and USA scientists’ are analyzed comprehensively in this work as well as the concepts of professionalism, qualification and competence. As it is seen from the given examples, those concepts are not defined in the same way now- slightly different issues are raised. In this aspect it makes the characteristics of a civil servant quite indefinite. Taking into account that most often the requirement for professionalism is usually connected with special preparation, it is suggested that at least in scientific literature it would be purposeful to describe a civil servant as a person, who acts in civil service and has got an adequate preparation to fulfill certain... Beyond the stakeholder paradox : to meaningful consultation with community stakeholders

McCandless, Kaisa M. January 2002 (has links)
This thesis argues that the stakeholder paradox (Goodpaster, 1991) has hindered the achievement of meaningful consultation processes because it perpetuates a management-centered discourse of stakeholder engagement aimed at producing stakeholder consent and legitimating organizational action. In order to advance beyond the use of stakeholder consultation as a sophisticated public relations tool, and instrument of organizational power and persuasion, it must be treated as a series of activities (discussion, deliberation and decision making) linked together through the common modality of negotiative communication. / An analysis of practice guidelines, protocols and key informant interviews using a critical organizational communication approach evaluates the extent to which contemporary instances of consultation practice account for the specificity of stakeholder context, address power and capacity gaps between consulting organizations, and enables all stakeholders to engage in a negotiative dialogue that has a direct influence upon the decision-making process of a project. This thesis argues that operationalizing tenets of a critical communication framework within consultation practice has the potential to produce the conditions for conducting a meaningful consultation with community stakeholders.
