"God has locked the sky" : exploring traditional farming systems in Tigray, EthiopiaDerakhshani, Nava 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2015. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Tigray region in northern Ethiopia is a historic centre of agricultural production and home to many subsistence farmers that still use traditional farming systems and practise rain-fed agriculture. The region has been affected adversely by famines and periodic droughts for centuries and is vulnerable to climate change. Farmers are producing on small plots of often degraded land and through their own actions have depleted the natural resources they rely on, in particular soil, water and trees.
This study sought to explore the environmental degradation of Tigray through both a literature review of its agricultural socio-political history and a lived experience in the village of Abraha We Atsebaha among farmers of the region. It uses a variety of methodologies and methods, including a literature review, grounded theory, narrative inquiry and ethnography, to expand on the factors that have contributed to the current degradation, the implications for traditional farming and the potential for land regeneration.
The first journal article seeks to explore how Ethiopians have shaped their natural environment. In particular, it focuses on deforestation, soil degradation, the role of changing governance and land-ownership patterns, and the effects of climate change. The article demonstrates that traditional farming systems do not operate in isolation from their socio-political and environmental context.
The second journal article provides an in-depth narrative inquiry conducted in Abraha We Atsebaha over a three-month period in 2014. This village is known for its indigenous farming knowledge, commitment to regeneration and innovation in conservation practices. Interviews were conducted with selected farmers and local leaders and informal discussions were carried out with government extension representatives using the ethno-ecological cosmos-corpus-praxis guidelines to enable an integrated exploration of the nature of traditional farming, the causative factors of environmental deterioration and the resultant communal response. In addition to written interview notes, observations and field notes were recorded daily. Photographs are used to give a real sense of the community and their work. It emerged during this process that underlying belief systems were exceptionally important in a context of traditional conservation. Both articles discuss the development work undertaken by government in the rural farming sector and the successes and challenges faced. They also show that elements of traditional farming, sustainability measures and environmental care were suspended in favour of short-term survival as a consequence of social, political and population stressors. This study provides learning points, gained from insights gleaned from the literature review and the lived experience, for improving development interventions in this region. This study did not explicitly explore the role of religion in conservation or the potential long-term effects of current government policies and initiatives. However, it contributes to the small pool of literature on the region focused on traditional farming systems by providing a comprehensive overview of the drivers of degradation (historical and current) and offers a unique, “soft” experiential narration of a village in northern Ethiopia that allows insight into farmer experiences, pressures and adaptation efforts. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die Tigray-streek in die noorde van Ethiopië is ’n historiese sentrum van landbouproduksie en die tuiste van menige bestaansboer wat nog op tradisionele boerderystelsels en reënbesproeiing staatmaak. Die streek het eeue lank onder hongersnood en periodieke droogtes gebuk gegaan en is kwesbaar vir klimaatsverandering. Boere bewerk klein stukke, dikwels afgetakelde, grond en het deur hul eie optrede die natuurlike hulpbronne waarop hulle staatmaak – veral die grond, water en bome – uitgeput.
Hierdie studie was daarop toegespits om ’n beter begrip te vorm van die omgewingsaftakeling in Tigray. Vir hierdie doel is ’n literatuurstudie van die sosiopolitieke landbougeskiedenis van die gebied onderneem, en is die lewe in die dorp Abraha We Atsebaha tussen boere van die streek ervaar. Die navorsing het van ’n verskeidenheid metodologieë en metodes, waaronder ’n literatuuroorsig, gegronde teorie, narratiewe ondersoek en etnografie, gebruik gemaak om lig te werp op die faktore wat tot die huidige aftakeling bygedra het, die implikasies vir tradisionele boerdery, en die potensiaal vir grondvernuwing.
Die eerste tydskrifartikel verken hoe Ethiopiërs hul natuurlike omgewing gevorm het. Dit konsentreer veral op ontbossing, grondaftakeling, die rol van veranderende staatsbestuurs- en grondbesitpatrone, en die uitwerking van klimaatsverandering. Onderhoude is met ’n uitgesoekte groep boere en plaaslike leiers gevoer, en voorligtingsbeamptes van die staat is by informele gesprekke betrek. Dit toon ook dat elemente van tradisionele boerdery, volhoubaarheidsmaatreëls en omgewingsorg as gevolg van maatskaplike, politieke en bevolkingsfaktore laat vaar is ten gunste van korttermynoorlewing. Die insigte wat uit die literatuuroorsig sowel as die lewenservaring in die bestudeerde gemeenskap spruit, bied lesse vir die verbetering van ontwikkelingsintervensies in die streek. Die studie het nie uitdruklik die rol van godsdiens in bewaring of die potensiële langtermynuitwerking van huidige staatsbeleide en -inisiatiewe ondersoek nie. Tog dra dit by tot die klein hoeveelheid beskikbare literatuur oor tradisionele boerderystelsels in die streek deur ’n omvattende oorsig te bied van die (historiese en huidige) snellers van aftakeling, en vertel dit ’n unieke, ‘sagte’ ervaringsverhaal oor ’n dorp in die noorde van Ethiopië om sodoende insig in landbou-ervarings, -druk en -aanpassingspogings te bied.

Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Nigeria is a country that has witnessed ongoing – albeit sporadic – violent conflict since its independence in 1960 from Britain. A brutal civil war, known as the Biafra war, lasting from 1967 to 1970, was not to end social tensions in this ethnically diverse country. Violent conflict has been an ongoing reality since the end of the Biafra war in 1970. In addition, Nigeria has exhibited substantial environmental degradation and resource scarcity during this time. Hence, this study assesses whether environmental degradation and resource scarcity are independent causes of domestic violent conflict in Nigeria since the end of the Biafra war. Additionally, rich reserves of natural non-renewable resources – in particular the prevalence of oil – are analysed vis-à-vis the degradation and growing scarcity of renewable resources in order to consider the impact both these aspects have on post civil war conflict in Nigeria. In order to achieve this, this study concerns itself primarily with causation. It considers two aspects in this regard. Firstly, it evaluates the assertion that the environment is an independent cause of conflict. That is to say, it investigates the notion that the environment impacts independently on human behaviour. Secondly, it examines the components of the social structure that create conditions that manipulate the environment in such a way that conflict is the ultimate outcome. This study asserts that the agency-structure composite is important to understand in order to examine violent conflict and its relationship with the environment in Nigeria. This relationship-structure-cause premise is examined by using a complex theory framework. Consequently, importance is placed on the causal relationship between violent conflict, environmental degradation and scarcity, natural non-renewable resource dependency and the social, economic and political milieu in which this transpires. This study ascertains that severe environmental change can only be considered a cause of conflict when its impact is considered with other important factors such as economic and political anonymity, which – for the most part – create the milieu in which subsequent violent conflict is the outcome. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Nigerië is 'n land wat deurlopend kan getuig, alhoewel sporadies, dat daar sedert sy onafhanklikheid van Brittanje in 1960, geweldadige konflik was. 'n Brutale burgelike oorlog wat geduur het vanaf 1967 to 1970, het geensins die sosiale spanning ge-eindig vir hierdie etniese diverse land nie. Gewelddadige konflik is 'n deurlopende werklikheid sedert die einde van die burgeroorlog in 1970. Daarbenewens het Nigerië uitgestaan vir hul aansienlike agteruitgang van die omgewing en hulpbron-skaarste gedurende hierdie tyd. Vandaar hierdie studie om te bepaal of die omgewing se agteruitgang en hulpbron-skaarste 'n onafhanklike oorsaak is van binnelandse geweldadige konflik in Nigerië, sedert die einde van die burgeroorlog. Influência da cobertura vegetal na ciclagem de nutrientes via solução do solo na região de Manaus - AM. / Influence of vegetation cover on nutrient cycling in soil solution at the area of Manaus AM.Neu, Vania 25 February 2005 (has links)
A pesquisa teve como objetivo contribuir para a sustentabilidade das formas de uso dos solos na Amazônia central, avaliando a influência da cobertura vegetal nos teores de nutrientes na solução do solo, ou seja, nos teores de cátions, ânions e carbono orgânico dissolvido (COD). Tomou-se como referência uma floresta primária, para comparação com áreas degradada, de reflorestamento, e de floresta secundária. O estudo foi realizado nos municípios de Manaus e Presidente Figueiredo, AM. Em cada área foram instalados extratores de tensão, nas profundidades de 10, 20, 50, 100 e 150 cm, para as coletas de solução de solo para análise da fase inorgânica, e nas profundidades 20 e 100 cm, para a fase orgânica. A coleta de solo para análise química foi realizada nas mesmas profundidades utilizadas para as coletas de solução do solo da fase inorgânica. As coletas de solução do solo e a quantificação da água da chuva foram realizadas ao longo de um ano hidrológico, seguindo a sazonalidade do clima regional, durante os anos de 2002 e 2003. Após a coleta, filtragem e preservação, as amostras foram encaminhadas ao laboratório para a determinação das concentrações de cátions e ânions por cromatografia líquida (Equipamento Dionex, modelo DX500). As concentrações de COD foram determinadas por combustão, com detecção do CO2 gerado nesta por infra vermelho não-dispersivo (Equipamento Shimadzu, modelo TOC 5000A). A maioria dos solos foi classificada como latossolos, muito ácidos, intemperizados e com baixa disponibilidade de nutrientes. Dos cátions presentes na solução do solo observou-se a predominância sódica-potássica, com grande influência dos aportes atmosféricos. Em relação aos ânions, a predominância foi de bicarbonato e cloreto, com grande contribuição da atividade biológica nas concentrações de bicarbonato em áreas cobertas por vegetação, e do aporte atmosférico nas concentrações de cloreto nas áreas sem cobertura vegetal. A vegetação apresentou forte influência na dinâmica dos íons, principalmente para nitrogênio, fósforo, potássio e magnésio, que apresentam como principal fontes a reciclagem da matéria orgânica e a transprecipitação. Na área degradada ocorreu predominância de cloreto e sódio, elementos que apresentam como principal fonte de entrada a precipitação. Na floresta secundária e no reflorestamento observou-se sinais de recuperação, com níveis mais elevados de nutrientes do que observado na área degradada, com destaque para aumentos significativos de COD e nitrato. Não somente a vegetação afetou a dinâmica dos íons avaliados, mas também a textura do solo, acidez, profundidade e precipitação. Para o carbono orgânico dissolvido observou-se enriquecimento à 100 cm de profundidade, provavelmente em função dos menores teores de ferro e alumínio em profundidade no solo. Este aumento em profundidade pode estar indicando uma ligação entre os sistemas terrestre e aquático, na qual o primeiro funciona como possível exportador de carbono para o segundo. / The main objective of this study was to contribute for the sustainability of land use in the central Amazon, evaluating the influence of vegetation cover on nutrient concentrations in soil solution that is, on the amounts of cations, anions and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Using a primary forest as reference, we compared these concentrations with those in a degraded area, in a reforestation and also in a secondary forest. The study was conducted in the counties of Manaus and Presidente Figueiredo. In each site we collected soil solution using tension lysimeters installed at the depths of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 150 cm for the inorganic phase and at 20 and 100 cm for the analysis of the organic phase. The soil itself was also collected at the same depths used for the study of the inorganic phase of soil solution, to determine its structure and chemical composition. Soil solution and precipitation were collected during a hydrological year, following the regional climate seasonality in the years of 2002 and 2003. After sampling, filtering and preserving in the field, soil solution samples were sent to the laboratory for the determination of cation and anion concentrations by liquid chromatography (Dionex, DX500) and DOC concentrations in a total organic carbon analyzer (Shimadzu, TOC5000A). Most of the soils were classified as Oxisols, very acid, highly weathered and with low nutrient availability. Sodium and potassium were the most predominant cations in soil solution, due to the influence of the atmospheric inputs. For anions, bicarbonate and chloride were showed the highest concentrations. At the sites covered with vegetation, biological activity played an important role in bicarbonate concentrations, as opposed to the site without vegetation, in which chloride was predominant, due to atmospheric inputs. There was a good correlation between vegetation cover and the dynamics of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium, all of which have as the main source recycling of organic matter recycling and throughfall. At the degraded area, chloride and sodium predominated, due to their main source, which is the precipitation. At the secondary forest and the reforestation there are indicators of the recovery of pristine conditions, whit higher levels of nutrients than those of the degraded area, specially significant increases in DOC and nitrate concentrations. Not only the vegetation influenced the dynamics of these nutrients in soil solution, but also soil texture, acidity, soil depth and precipitation. DOC, for example, showed significant increases in concentrations at 1m depths, probably due to the lowest iron and aluminum concentrations at these soil depths. This increase of DOC with depth may indicate an important connection between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem, with the acting as an exporter of C to the rivers of the region.

Apesar de diversos tipos de entidades se voltarem à recuperação das APPs com a justificativa de contribuir para a conservação das bacias hidrográficas, observa-se que a degradação dos ambientes em que vivemos é uma realidade cada dia mais preocupante. As instituições que realizam estes trabalhos e os técnicos que as representam, de forma geral, consideram as populações das áreas rurais apenas como implementadores de suas idéias e práticas, sem entender a real visão que seus interlocutores têm sobre o assunto. Esta proposta de mestrado objetivou realizar um estudo de caso no intuito de contribuir para a produção de conhecimentos voltados à gestão de bacias hidrográficas e a políticas públicas direcionadas à conservação dos recursos naturais. Para isso buscou uma maior compreensão sobre as diferentes concepções a respeito da relação entre água, bacia hidrográfica e mata ciliar e sua influência nas propostas de manejo vigentes em três grupos sociais da bacia do Campestre, Saltinho, SP: a) sitiantes, b) técnicos ligados a projetos de restauração florestal, c) acadêmicos ligados à hidrologia florestal. Os resultados apontaram que os três grupos percebem uma degradação ambiental na bacia, porém, através de três concepções distintas, que fundamentam distintos discursos e práticas para a conservação da qualidade e quantidade de água. Esta situação se mostrou como um dos motivos que vem impedindo um efetivo diálogo entre proprietários rurais e técnicos e interferindo na própria conservação. Isto demonstra que é necessário que se leve em consideração a representação que a população possui sobre seu ambiente, além de outros aspectos sociais fundamentais para sua compreensão, na busca de um efetivo diálogo entre os envolvidos. Isso é essencial para que seja possível caminhar em direção à desejada conservação, que deve ser construída, desde sua concepção até sua implementação, sempre de forma compartilhada. / Several Institutions are involved with the recovery of the "buffer zones", aimed at contributing to watershed conservation because of the continuing degradation of our environment. In general rural areas populations are taken into account by the Institutions responsible for these works as well as their representatives, but as only as recipient of their ideas and practices, not taking into consideration their own needs and views of the situation. This Master thesis main objective was to work on a case study with the aim to improve watershed management knowledge as well as establish public policies towards the conservation of natural resources. For this purpose a comparative analysis was made with three human social groups of the Campestre creek watershed (Saltinho County, State of Sao Paulo). These three groups were a) the rural land owners, b) technicians and c) scholars who are linked with forest hydrology. The results pointed out that all these groups do known that an environmental degradation of the creek is taking place but always differ according to different concepts about water, watersheds and riparian forests interrelation. These different perceptions establish the distinct practices on the usage of the natural resources. This can be considered one of the causes that prevents an effective dialogue between rural land owners and technicians. This is one of the causes interfering in the very objective of conservation itself. Thus it has been demonstrated that it is important to search for an effective dialogue between all sectors involved, taking into consideration the perception of the communities plus any basic social aspects that may help the technicians to understand the social conservation processes. These need the co-participation of all involved parties in order to effectively construct the desired environmental conservation.

Os Manguezais são ecossistemas de grande importância ecológica, social e econômica. Tendo em vista que estas áreas vêm sofrendo degradações, em especial a contaminação por resíduos e efluentes contendo metais pesados, que interferem na estabilidade ambiental, torna-se importante identificar o nível de interferências destes contaminantes sobre o desenvolvimento dos bosques que colonizam tais áreas. Assim sendo, a proposta deste estudo é avaliar os efeitos de metais sobre o estabelecimento de propágulos, mudas e indivíduos adultos de Rhizophora mangle (Mangue vermelho), espécie de ampla dispersão em Manguezais, buscando verificar a qualidade ambiental do ecossistema. Foram selecionadas três áreas localizadas nos municípios de Cubatão e São Vicente, na Baixada Santista - SP, grande pólo industrial regional e maior área portuária do país, além de uma área testemunha localizada na Ilha do Cardoso, Cananéia - SP. A Qualidade ambiental, na inexistência de um padrão de concentração de metais em plantas, foi avaliada com base concentração de cinco diferentes metais nos compartimentos solo, água, material vegetal e organismos, comparativamente entre áreas. A pior situação foi constatada para área localizada no Canal da Cosipa, intermediária para o Rio Cascalho e melhor no Manguezal do Rio Mariana. Verificou-se que a contaminação por metais está associada ao padrão do bosque (alterado em função do grau de degradação), sendo este um dos tensores ambientais responsáveis pela reposta negativa no estabelecimento de R. mangle na Baixada Santista. / Mangroves are ecosystems of great ecological and economical importance. Considering that these areas have been degradated, specially by deposition of solid wastes and liquid effluents containing heavy metals it becomes important to identify to what level these contaminants interfere on the development of plants that colonize such environs. Therefore, the aim of this study is assess the effects of heavy metals on the development of propágulos", plântulas" and mudas" of the Mangue vermelho (Rhizophora mangle), specie which is widely spread on mangroves, in order to determine environmental quality at the mangrove. Three study areas with considerable degradation were selected in the municipalities of Cubatão and São Vicente, in the Baixada Santista - SP, industrial coastal region and greatest sea port of Brazil and a background non contaminated area located on the Cardoso Island and in Cananéia. Due to the absence of a metal concentration standard for plants, environmental quality was assessed by comparison between five different metals determined in the soil, water, vegetation and organisms at the selected sites. Worst environmental conditions were found at the Cosipa Channel, intermediate at the Cascalho river and best at Mariana river. It was verified that metal concentration was associated with mangrove development (altered as a function of degradation level), being this a cause for the decreased establishment of R.mangle at the Baixada Santista area.

Esta pesquisa visa contribuir para a produção de conhecimentos que subsidiem atividades de educação ambiental através da descrição de um estudo de caso realizado junto aos alunos moradores da Área de Proteção Ambiental de Sousas e Joaquim Egídio, localizada em Campinas - São Paulo. O grupo formado por alunos da 7ª série da Escola Municipal de Ensino Fundamental "Ângela Cury Zackia" constituiu o público-alvo da pesquisa. Seu foco está na análise da compreensão da questão ambiental para os alunos moradores. Foi utilizado como referencial metodológico o estudo de caso, a pesquisa qualitativa e pesquisa-ação, com auxílio de instrumentos como: entrevistas semi-estruturadas, questionários, análise documental e realização de oficinas. Busca-se refletir sobre o significado de meio ambiente e natureza e caracterizar do grupo frente ao envolvimento, participação e compromisso nos problemas relacionados ao meio ambiente. / This research aims at to contribute for the production of knowledge that subsidize activities of ambient education through the description of a study of case carried through together to the living pupils of the Area of Environment Protection of Sousas and Joaquin Egídio, located in Campinas - S.P. Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / Buscamos detectar evidências da presença de genes envolvidos na produção de Enzimas Modificadoras de Aminoglicosídeos (EMAs), Beta-lactamases de espectro estendido (ESBLs) e Mecanismos Plasmidiais de Resistência a Quinolonas (PMQRs) em cepas de K. pneumoniae, K. ozaenae e E. coli isoladas de amostras de água de rios afluentes da Baía de Guanabara e de materiais clínicos de origem hospitalar, além de avaliar o "status sanitário" dos corpos aquáticos abordados no tocante à contaminação fecal recente e indicações de contaminação hospitalar e por outros ambientes de alta seletividade. As cepas de materiais clínicos foram selecionadas entre Maio e Julho de 2010, a partir da semeadura em meio de cultura contendo 8g/mL de gentamicina. As amostras de água foram coletadas em Abril e em Julho de 2009. Realizamos testes de colimetria, empregando para tal, a metodologia convencional e outra, na qual adicionamos 32g/mL de cefalotina e 8g/mL de gentamicina aos caldos Lactosado e Escherichia coli (caldo EC), a fim de detectar e quantificar coliformes resistentes. Para o isolamento das cepas empregamos meios de cultura contendo 32g/mL de cefalotina e 8g/mL de gentamicina. As cepas foram identificadas e submetidas a testes de susceptibilidade aos antimicrobianos (TSA), testes presuntivos para presença de ESBLs, extração de DNA plasmidial e ensaios de Reação em Cadeia de Polimerase (PCR) para a detecção dos genes. A utilização de agentes antimicrobianos nos testes de colimetria nos permitiu detectar a presença e quantificar coliformes totais e fecais resistentes nas amostras de água analisadas nos diferentes pontos. O TSA das cepas isoladas de amostras de água exibiu perfis de multirresistência, compatíveis com o de bactérias de origem hospitalar, semelhante ao encontrado nas cepas isoladas de materiais clínicos. Todas as cepas isoladas de amostras de água e 90% das cepas de materiais clínicos apresentaram pelo menos uma banda plasmidial. Os ensaios de PCR evidenciaram a presença de produtos de amplificação para EMAs, ESBLs e PMQRs, sendo que 7,4% das cepas de amostras de água e 20% das cepas de materiais clínicos apresentaram produtos de amplificação para as três classes de antimicrobianos. A realização de testes de colimetria empregando antimicrobianos, como gentamicina e cefalotina, pode ser uma ferramenta adicional importante ao teste convencional, quando o interesse for, o monitoramento e a prevenção de contaminação ambiental, especialmente associada a microrganismos carreando genes de resistência. O uso criterioso de antimicrobianos em atividades de cunho hospitalar e veterinário e medidas no sentido de prevenção de lançamento de esgoto e/ou tratamento dos efluentes, são fundamentais para o controle da disseminação de elementos genéticos de resistência transferíveis entre os microrganismos. A detecção e identificação de microrganismos apresentando elementos de resistência em ambiente extra-hospitalar como em água e solo, em particular, o emprego de testes de colimetria empregando antimicrobianos, se faz necessária, como forma de prevenção e controle de disseminação destes microrganismos com potencial de causar infecções em humanos e outros animais que eventualmente entram em contato com estes ambientes. / We seek to detect evidence of the presence of genes involved in the production of Aminoglycoside Modifying Enzymes (AME), Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) and Plasmid Mechanisms of Resistance to Quinolones (PMQRs) in strains of K. pneumoniae, K. ozaenae and E. coli isolated from water samples from rivers of Guanabara Bay and clinical samples of hospital origin, and to evaluate the "health status" of water bodies addressed in relation to recent fecal contamination and signs of hospital contamination and other environments with high selectivity. The strains from clinical materials were selected between May and July 2010, using culture media containing 8g/mL gentamicin. Water samples were collected in April and July 2009. Colimetric assays were performed, using the conventional methodology and other which we added 32g/mL cephalothin and 8g/mL of gentamicin at Lactose and Escherichia coli broth (EC broth), in order to detect and to count resistant coliforms. For isolation of the strains we employed culture media containing 32g/mL cephalothin and 8g/mL gentamicin. The strains were identified and submitted to tests for antimicrobial susceptibility (TSA), presumptive tests for the presence of ESBLs, plasmid DNA extraction and tests of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). The use of antimicrobial agents in colimetric assays allowed us to detect and to count the resistant total and fecal coliforms in the water samples analyzed at different points. The TSA of the isolates recovered from water samples showed multidrug-resistance profiles, compatible with that of nosocomial bacteria, similar to that found in isolates recovered from clinical materials. All isolates from water samples and 90% of the isolates of clinical samples showed at least one plasmid band. PCR assays demonstrated the presence of amplification products to AME, ESBLs and PMQRs, and 7.4% of the isolates recovered of samples of water and 20% of the isolates of clinical materials showed amplification products for the three antimicrobial classes. The colimetric assays using antimicrobials as gentamicin and cephalotin, may be important additional tool to conventional colimetric test, when the interest is the monitoring and prevention of environmental contamination, especially associated with drug-resistant microorganisms, carrying resistance genes. We believe that besides the judicious use of antimicrobial in hospital and veterinary activities, measures to prevent discharge of sewage and / or sewage treatment, are essential to control the dissemination of transferable genetic elements of resistance among microorganisms. The detection and identification of microorganisms presenting genetic elements in environment, as water and soil, privately colimetric assays using antimicrobials, are necessary to prevent and to control of dissemination to these microorganisms with potential to infect humans and other animals in eventual contact with this environment.

Environmental Control in Oil & Gas Exploration & Production : A Case Study of the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria, West AfricaIbem-Ezera, Victor January 2010 (has links)
<p>The goal of this study is to examine the environmental impacts of oil and gas exploration and production (E&P), the roles of legislation, and the environmental management strategies in the petroleum industry with respect to the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The study seeks to suggest sustainable solutions to the endemic economic, social, and environmental problems associated with oil and gas E&P in the region. The focus is on the environmental control in the upstream (E&P) operations of the oil and gas industry as it affects the Niger Delta region of Nigeria with a view to proffering sustainable solutions.</p><p>The heavily polluting activities and environmental impacts of the upstream oil and gas operations in the Niger Delta have over the years taken a routine dimension and are endemic as a result of inadequate environmental legislations and ineffective enforcements. Sequel to these environmental impacts is militancy, adoption of expatriates, communal conflicts, inter-ethnic conflicts, human right abuses, restiveness and other social vices as the study reveals. These social and environmental impacts of oil and gas activities in this region bring impoverishment, abject poverty, hunger, squalor, birth disease, gene mutation, and death while exposing inhabitants of the region to afflictions and diseases as the study explicitly documents.</p><p>The study also reveals that the persistence rate of unrest, restiveness, militancy and other social vices is as a result of non-dialogue status between the different stakeholders, lack of infrastructural development, lack of basic amenities, high rate of unemployment, poor policy construct, federalized mineral right / resource ownership structure, and the monopolistic nature of Nigeria’s foreign exchange earning in petroleum resources.</p><p>In this dissertation, both proactive and corrective measures to curb the menace of the social, economic and environmental impacts of oil and gas exploration & production operations in Nigeria are presented and discussed with suggestions to sustainable solution and development, better environmental legislation, and better resource policy construct while advocating for good industrial practices in the petroleum industry with emphasis on the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.</p>

China has achieved unprecedented economic growth and consequent successes in poverty alleviation over the past three decades of economic liberalization and market-oriented reforms. Yet, in order to continue its progress in poverty reduction, while addressing pressing environmental and sociopolitical concerns, it is crucial for China’s leaders to achieve and sustain green, equitable, and robust economic performance in all parts of China. This thesis argues that a reconceptualized and strengthened rural industrialization program would enable China to maintain economic growth and assist with the transition to a domestically driven consumer economy. Moreover, rural industrialization, coupled with targeted administrative and institutional policy modifications, will enable the Chinese government to provide support to millions of its rural poor, thus avoiding social instability and potentially severe internal conflicts. Such a program would also lessen pollution and its associated costs on China’s densely populated cities, by shifting heavy urban industries to relatively less contaminated areas while adopting cleaner, environmentally sustainable technologies, introduced in a participatory manner in consultation with local communities. This approach would concurrently address regional, rural-to-urban, and intra-communal disparities, provide opportunity for “green growth” initiatives, and better equip rural populations to address growing vulnerabilities as a result of climate change.
