An investigation into the effectiveness of core muscle strengthening on cycling performance in asymptomatic cyclists

Wiseman, Kate 08 April 2014 (has links)
Dissertation submitted in partial compliance with the requirements for the Masters’ Degree in Technology: Chiropractic, Durban University of Technology, 2013. / Background : Core strengthening may improve athletic ability by providing stability to the trunk, and as a result, stabilising the pelvis. The leverage from which cyclists generate power may be enhanced as a result of a stable pelvis, thereby improving the cyclist’s performance. In the popular, highly competitive sport of cycling, performance enhancement is much sought after. Despite its widespread use, research involving core strengthening in sporting situations is lacking, with studies investigating the effect of a core strengthening programme on cycling performance yet to be investigated. Objectives : To determine the participants’ cycling speed, power, cadence and completion time, and core strength in terms of objective findings, pre- and post- core strengthening intervention, in the whole sample and within the two age strata. To determine the participants’ heart rate in terms of objective findings, and the rate of perceived exertion in terms of subjective findings, pre- and post- core strengthening intervention, in the whole sample and within the two age strata. To determine the participants’ perception of change in speed, power and cadence post- intervention, in the whole sample and within the two age strata. Method : Forty-two asymptomatic cyclists performed two 1.5 km time trials, pre- and post- core strengthening intervention. Core strength assessments were performed pre- and post- intervention, using the Pressure Biofeedback Unit, and the maximum and average speed (km/hr), power (w) and cadence (rpm), and completion time (s) were recorded pre- and post- intervention, using the Computerised Electromagnetic Roller resistance Ergometer (Tacx Trainer). Heart rate and rate of perceived exertion (RPE) were recorded pre- and post- intervention, as well as the participant’s perception of change in speed, power, and cadence post- intervention. SPSS version 20 (SPSS Inc) was used to analyse the data, in the whole sample and stratified into two age strata. Results : ll cycling performance indicators, speed, power, cadence and completion time showed a significant improvement post- intervention, in the whole sample, and within the two age strata. Core strength indicators showed a significant improvement post- intervention, in the whole sample and within the two age strata. A significant decrease in rate of perceived exertion and corresponding heart rate measurements post- intervention was observed in the whole sample. Similarly, the younger age strata reflected a significant decrease in rate of perceived exertion, however heart rate measurements were not significant. In contrast, the older age strata showed significant changes in heart rate measurements, with no significance in rate of perceived exertion measurements. The majority of participants experienced an increased perception in all outcomes post- intervention. Conclusions: The results of this study found that core strengthening had a statistically significant effect (p < 0.001) on cycling performance, both in terms of objective and subjective findings. Future studies could address the effect of core strengthening in an endurance setting.

Evaluation of inner/intra-systemic concatenations is becoming more popular. The application of complex systems theories for differently trained people may boost the knowledge about the intersystem concatenations and may provide more information about functional state and perceived exertion. The aim of the research: To evaluate the connection between cardiovascular system’s functional parameters and perceived exertion during rest, physical task and recovery. Objectives of the study: 1. To assess perceived exertion during bicycle ergometer test. 2. To determine cardiovascular system‘s functional parameters of differently trained subjects during different test performance stages: rest, load and recovery. 3. To find out the correlations between perceived exertion and functional parameters of cardiovascular system during rest, load and recovery. Contingent and methods: We had 57 young volunteers aged (22.75 ± 0,4 year) participating in this study. We divided participants according the trained feature in 4 groups: endurance (n=12, 23±0.35 year), endurance-celerity group (n=16, 20.5±0.55 year), strength group (n=10, 24.3±0.53 year) and non-active group (n=19, 23.21±2.22 year). Methods: Endurance group went through constant load until volitional exhaustion. Celerity-endurance, strength and non-active groups went through incremental loading where the increase was made every minute by 50 W. The perceived exertion was measured every 15 seconds with Borg (RPE6-20) scale. Ongoing... Holm, Siri Margrete 11 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the physiological and psychological responses to linear work rate treadmill and cycle ergometer exercise tests in men and women with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). 12 men and 8 women with COPD completed one treadmill and one cycle cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) in randomized order. Before and after each CPET, the particpants completed measures of Self-Efficacy (SE), State-Anxiety, and Arousal. No significant differences were found between the physiological responses to cycle and treadmill CPET in either men or women. SE increased significantly as a result of the first test, regardless of exercise modality and sex. State anxiety was significantly reduced after the first test, whereas there was no significant change in arousal state. In conclusion there were no differences between the physiological and psychological responses to treadmill and cycle CPET in men and women with COPD.

TAMBORINDEGUY, A. C. Avaliação da força e do momento tibiofemoral durante a pedalada: uma orientação para a reabilitação. Dissertação de Mestrado. Programa de pós-graduação em ciências do movimento humano. Escola de Educação Física. Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. / TAMBORINDEGUY, A. C. Assessment of force and moment during cycling: an orientation to rehabilitation. Master thesis. Graduation Program in Human Movement Sciences. School of Physical Education. Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. During knee injuries rehabilitation process the cycle ergometer has been largely used. However, there are few studies orienting their use avoiding overload damaged structures. The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of compression and shear force components and resultant joint moment in ergometer cycling at different saddle height, cadence and workload during rehabilitation seasons. Nine healthy male volunteers participated in this study. Protocol consisted of evaluation of three differents saddle heights (trochanter height, 3 cm downward and 3 cm upward from trochanter height), two cadences (40 and 70 rpm) and three workloads (0, 5 and 10 N). An instrumented pedal and a motion system were used to calculate the twodimensional biomechanical model. Mean peak compressive intersegmental force, maximum and minimum mean peak shear force, and mean peak extensor and flexor moment during eight pedaling cycles were analyzed. Results demonstrated that changes in workload interfere in mean peak compressive force as well in maximum mean peak shear intersegmentar force. Mean peak compressive were -44.94 (±3.12) N for 0 N, -53.21 (±4.56) N for 5 N and -76.50 (±5.69) N for 10 N. Maximum mean peak shear were 61.32 (±5.60) N for O N, 71.21 (±7.73) N for 5 N and 93.89 (±9.10) N for 10 N. Mean peak flexor moment increased as workload increase (12.77 (±1.68) Nm for 0 N, 16.90 (±2.49) Nm for 5 N and 25.40 (±3.25) Nm for 10 N). Mean peak extensor moment increased at saddle positioned 3 cm downward. Results were - 10.15 (±0.58) Nm, -11.09 (±0.55) Nm, and -9.68 (±0.58) Nm, for trochanteric height, 3 cm downward, and 3 cm upward, respectively. Mean peak extensor moment increased as cadence and workload increased (from -10.12 (±0.57) Nm at 40 rpm to - 10.49 (±0.56) Nm at 70 rpm; from -10.19 (±0.57) Nm at 5 N to -10.53 (±0.60) Nm at 10 N, respectively). Therefore, pedaling at 0 N with saddle positioned 3 cm upward from trochanter height at 40 rpm results in lower joint and muscle overload.

MR spektroskopie pacientů s diabetem mellitus / MR spectroscopy in patients with diabetes mellitus

Šedivý, Petr January 2013 (has links)
This thesis deals with in vivo MR spectroscopy. Measurements in this thesis were performed on whole-body MR tomograph at the Institute for Clinical and Experimental Medicine in Prague. The objective of the thesis was to study differences in the biochemical processes and energy metabolism in the muscle tissue under physical workload between the groups of healthy subjects and patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1). We used phosphorous spectroscopy in combination with ergometer. The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter describes theoretical introduction to in vivo 1 H and 31 P MR spectroscopy and muscle metabolism, the second chapter deals with the description of the experimental equipment and measurement, results of the thesis are reported in the third chapter and the fourth chapter is a discussion of results. Main result of this work is summarized in conclusion; we found differences between the metabolism of patients with DM1 and healthy volunteers.

Morning and Afternoon Response to Exercise Using Two Test Protocols

Jones, Nicole A. (Nicole Amy) 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose was to investigate time of day on responses to two types of exhaustive cycle ergometer tests. Sixteen males performed six exercise tests: three - constant power protocol and three - incremental protocol. The first test was a learning trial; the other tests were performed one in the morning and one in the afternoon. ANOVA revealed that O2 deficit and lactate were higher in the afternoon than the morning. Regardless of test type, time to exhaustion tended to be higher in the afternoon. VO2max was unaffected by the time of day and test type. These results confirmprevious reports of a time of day effect on anaerobic capacity, and support the contention that V02max is stable about a day.
