La parole de la sibylle : fable et prophétie à la fin du Moyen Age / The Sibyl’s Speech : The Use of Myths and Prophecies in the Late Middle Ages

Abed, Julien 13 March 2010 (has links)
The Sibyl was a true prophet. This study questions that commonplace idea from the Late Middle Ages, following three axes. First, it examines how the Sibyl’s speech related to Ancient times – the texts depict the prophetess’s voice as one originating in olden times. Second, it details how her words have been linked to oracles, because the Middle Ages have used her speech to deliver prophecies foretelling the history of salvation and the history of mankind. Third, it considers the relation between her voice and gender, since the Sibyl’s ability to access knowledge and reach the sacred has been determined by the various representations of the mediaeval woman. This work is based on unpublished manuscripts as well as better-known literary works. It shows that the Sibyl, oscillating between myth and prophecy, has been consistently regarded as prophetess of Christ and has enabled writers to stage her authority in different ways.

Jean Eustache : génétique et fabrique / Jean Eustache : genetics And Work

Sudoh, Kentaro 02 March 2016 (has links)
The dissertation conducts a genetic study of Jean Eustache’s work (1938-1981) as seen through his completed films as well as unfinished projects and drafts. In being based on archives, so far undeveloped (Cinémathèque française, Inathèque, IMEC and personal collections), carrying out interviews with his former producers, directors of photography, assistants, actors, collaborators, friends, or family, and in analyzing not only his movies but also his film scripts, director’s memos or production files, the dissertation reconstructs Eustache’s whole creative journey with its twists and turns. As analysis of creation, the method seeks to trace in the most documented manner possible the process that gave rise to Eustache’s œuvre. How are connected his everlasting autobiographical undertaking and the various conditions of productions? What has leaded him to produce the filmic manifesto Number Zero (1971)? How are The Mother and the Whore (1973) and My Little Loves (1974) produced almost simultaneously? How was born the idea for experimental film essays such as A Dirty Story (1977) or Alix’s Photos (1980)? How one can create originally within both the author cinema and Public Television? This doctoral study replies to these factual questions, which enable to clarify Jean Eustache’s aesthetic and cinematic specific choices.

São Luís: o poder e o serviço nos escritos franciscanos dos séculos XIII-XIV / Saint Louis: power and ministry in the Franciscan texts: 13th and 14th centuries

Branco, Marília Pugliese 12 July 2018 (has links)
The main goal of this thesis is to investigate the conception of power during Louis 9th (1214-1270) regime, on the perspective of the ministry, and according to the Franciscan texts. Louis 9th government represented the apogee of the local monarchies, the strengthening of the independent kingdoms, and the connection between them and the Church. For, the research is based on sources written in the 13th century: those are the sermons of Saint Bonaventure of Bagnoregio (1217-1274) and Eustache d´Arras (ca.1266-ca.1291). Besides, weve been served of a liturgical officium appeared in Paris, in the 14th century, written by an anonymous friar. We part of the assumption of Louis devotion, as well as his closeness towards the Franciscan Order. These two friars represent two complementary conceptions of power. Known as a pastoral model by the medieval Political Theology, the men´s government was seat in a ministry way, bounded to Louis 9thin order to elaborate the Franciscan rex.

Turgeon, Charles 03 1900 (has links)
This dissertation examines the reaction of Canadian clergy to the American invasion of 1775-1776. While historians have generally considered that the priests of the colony remained loyal to the British Government on this occasion, three priests stand in contrast to this image of loyalty: Eustache Chartier de Lotbinière (1716-1785), Pierre-René Floquet (1716 -1782), Joseph Huguet (1725-1783) and Pierre Huet de La Valinière (1732-1806). Suspected by church and colonial authorities to have shown sympathy to the American revolutionaries, these men were struck by various sanctions that permanently affected the development of their careers.

Religious reform, transnational poetics, and literary tradition in the work of Thomas Hoccleve

Langdell, Sebastian James January 2014 (has links)
This study considers Thomas Hoccleve’s role, throughout his works, as a “religious” writer: as an individual who engages seriously with the dynamics of heresy and ecclesiastical reform, who contributes to traditions of vernacular devotional writing, and who raises the question of how Christianity manifests on personal as well as political levels – and in environments that are at once London-based, national, and international. The chapters focus, respectively, on the role of reading and moralization in the Series; the language of “vice and virtue” in the Epistle of Cupid; the moral version of Chaucer introduced in the Regiment of Princes; the construction of the Hoccleve persona in the Regiment; and the representation of the Eucharist throughout Hoccleve’s works. One main focus of the study is Hoccleve’s mediating influence in presenting a moral version of Chaucer in his Regiment. This study argues that Hoccleve’s Chaucer is not a pre-established artifact, but rather a Hocclevian invention, and it indicates the transnational literary, political, and religious contexts that align in Hoccleve’s presentation of his poetic predecessor. Rather than posit the Hoccleve-Chaucer relationship as one of Oedipal anxiety, as other critics have done, this study indicates the way in which Hoccleve’s Chaucer evolves in response to poetic anxiety not towards Chaucer himself, but rather towards an increasingly restrictive intellectual and ecclesiastical climate. This thesis contributes to the recently revitalized critical dialogue surrounding the role and function of fifteenth-century English literature, and the effect on poetry of heresy, the church’s response to heresy, and ecclesiastical reform both in England and in Europe. It also advances critical narratives regarding Hoccleve’s response to contemporary French poetry; the role of confession, sacramental discourse, and devotional images in Hoccleve’s work; and Hoccleve’s impact on literary tradition.
