An analysis of the association between family structure and video game usage

The purpose of this study was to examine if video game usage was influenced by family structure. Family structure was measured in two ways; the first, the amount of time one spends with their family, and second, family disruption. The amount of time one spends with their family was measured with specific amounts of time; for example, the number of weekly days one would engage with his or her family. Family disruption was broken into four categories; parental marriage, parental divorce, adoption, and guardian death. Video game usage was measured in two categories; weekly days one plays video games, and daily hours one plays video games. The evidence from the 701 surveys suggests there is no correlation between video game usage and the amount of time one spends with their family. The evidence also suggests that family disruption does not influence whether or not one plays video games either. / Department of Sociology

The primary objective of this study was to determine the role of the host community in the marketing of arts festivals with reference to the Grahamstown National Arts Festival. This goal was achieved firstly by analysing the relationship between the events industry and the community. Secondly, a literature study was conducted to explore the role of the community in tourism marketing. Thirdly, a survey was done to determine the perceptions of the community in terms of the marketing of the Festival as well as the social impact thereof. From previous studies it was found that the local community can be seen as a group of people of different gender, race, age and different race and social groups living together in a certain geographic area. The local community is the main suppliers of an event; they provide many of the businesses, public places and hospitality services used by tourists and visitors at an event. Staff, volunteers and many other resources come from the local community. The attitude of the local community towards the Festival is proven to be important. Positive attitudes are associated with economic and social benefits gained from the event. The attitude of the local community can influence their behaviour towards tourists as well as their message spread concerning the event, through word-of-mouth communication. They can influence the buying behaviour of tourists and visitors. Research was undertaking at Grahamstown National Arts Festival to determine the perceptions and attitudes of the local community towards the Festival and the marketing thereof. This was determined by means of a questionnaire as adopted from Fredline, Jago and Deery. It was distributed among the local community according to a stratified random sampling procedure. A total of 265 questionnaires were completed by residents. Firstly, the data was used to compile tables and graphs with a view to interpret the descriptive data: demographic information as well as perceptions and attitudes of the local community towards the Festival and the marketing thereof. It was found that the Festival has a positive impact on their personal lives as well as on the community as a whole. Positive and negative social impacts were identified, which indicates that the community are aware of the impacts: positive, including the range of things to do in Grahamstown has improved (80%), the number of people in the area has increased (80%) and there are more opportunities to meet new people (80%). The highest rated negative social impacts include the fact that the availability of parking has decreased (79%), that the public money spent on the Festival would be better spent on other things (43%) and that ordinary residents get no say in the planning and management of the Festival (50%). In terms of the marketing, the local community markets the Festival verbally by telling friends and family about it and also by attending the Festival themselves. However, the local community feel that they should be more involved in the planning and marketing of the Festival. Secondly, a factor analysis was performed with a view to synthesise the large amount of data concerning the perceptions and marketing of the Festival in smaller, more descriptive factors. These factors were used to determine the role of the community in the marketing of the Festival. The factor analysis yielded a 2-factor solution and the factors were labelled: Factor 1: Verbal marketing of the Festival; Factor 2: Action marketing of the Festival. Thirdly, a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to explore the impact of the variables: age, gender, race, income, level of education, attitudes towards continuation of the Festival, attendance of the current festival, attendance of previous festivals, level of interest in the Festival, length of stay in Grahamstown, attitudes towards living in Grahamstown on the dimensions Verbal and Active marketing, as determined in the factor analysis. It was found that a medium effect exists between the middle-aged group and the older-age group on the Verbal marketing dimension. A medium effect also exists between the black and Asian respondents on the dimension Verbal marketing. There is a large effect between attendance of the Festival and Verbal marketing but a medium effect on the dimension Action marketing. A large effect was determined between avid fans and those that are not interested but attend occasionally, between avid fans and those who have no interest in the Festival, between those that are interested and attend some aspects of the Festival and those that are not interested but attend, those that are interested and attend and those that are not interested, on the Verbal marketing dimension. A medium effect was discovered between avid fans of the Festival and those that attended some of the aspects of the Festival, and those that are not interested but attend some aspects, and those that are not interested at all, on the Verbal marketing dimension. The Governance of Olympic Games Legacy

The purpose of this study was to understand the governance of Olympic Games legacy. Legacy is broadly described as “all planned and unplanned, positive and negative, intangible and tangible structures created by and for a sport event that remain for a longer time than the event itself” (Preuss, 2007a, p. 86). The specific objectives of this study were: a) to map the historical evolution of legacy throughout the modern Olympic Movement (OM) (i.e., 1896-current day) in order to contextualize and conceptualize the major trends (e.g., changes in legacy, network actors/stakeholders, governance structures and processes) over time; b) to understand, explain, and compare/contrast the network governance of Olympic legacy, using Australian and Canadian case settings; and c) to critically analyze the overall structure and process of the governance of legacy within the OM focusing specifically on the aspects of performance, transparency, accountability, and participation to build a framework and provide policy recommendations for the governance of legacy in mega-events. In order to accomplish these objectives, a historical review of legacy within the OM and two descriptive case studies (Sydney 2000 and Vancouver 2010) were built using interviews and archival materials. Findings showed how the growth of the Games has culminated in the increased use and importance of legacy, leading to greater concept complexity. This resulted in the emergence of several trends including: new legacy themes, heightened interconnectedness, and formalization of governance mechanisms. Institutional theory was then applied to further explore the emergence of legacy and its habitualization, objectification, and sedimentation as an accepted norm in the Olympic Field. The examination of the legacy governance networks in the two cases showed four legacy network governance phases: legacy conceptualization, legacy planning and implementation, legacy transfer, and post-Games legacy governance, as well as a number of governance mechanisms (e.g., contracts, policies) that had an impact on the overall governance of the event’s legacy. Finally, a critical analysis of the governance of Olympic Games legacy was completed. The end result of the research project was a theoretical framework detailing the levels and fluidity of legacy governance in the OM.

How Insiders and Informational Events Affect Bid-Ask Spreads: A Simulation-Based Approach

This paper will examine the effects of inside information on bid-ask spreads when the probability of insider trading and the likelihood of an informational event occurring varies using a theoretical, simulation-based approach. The results show that bid-ask spreads narrow as the number of time periods increase, regardless of probability of insider trading or the likelihood of an informational event occurring. For a high, given likelihood of an informational event occurring, the highest average spreads were found for lower probabilities of insider trading as time increased. For a high, given probability of insider trading, the highest average spreads were found for lower likelihoods of an informational event occurring as time increased. The variances increased along with the probability of insider trading as well as with the likelihood of an informational event occurring. The maximum average spread settled near 0.25, typically found for a probability of insider trading of 1 and a likelihood of an information event occurring of 0.5. The results verify previous research done by Glosten and Milgrom (1985), Easley, Hvidkjaer and O’Hara (2002) and Potterton (2011). The results also may reconcile the differences between the findings of Easley, Hvidkjaer and O’Hara (2002) and Potterton (2011).

The Impact of Adverse Events on Hospital Outcomes and Sensitvity of Cost Estimates to Diagnostic Coding Variation

Previous research has established a consensus that in-hospital adverse events are ubiquitous, cause significant harm to patients, and have important financial consequences. However, information on the extent, consequences and costs of adverse events in Canada is limited. For example, there is, as yet, no published study that has investigated the costs of adverse events in a Canadian context. This dissertation aims to redress this situation by providing Ontario-based estimates of the impact of eleven nursing sensitive adverse events on cost, death, readmission, and ambulatory care use within 90 days after hospitalization. This dissertation also aims to contribute more broadly to the patient safety literature by quantifying the impact of diagnostic coding error in administrative data on estimates of the excess costs attributable to adverse events. Given the increasing importance of these estimates in Canada and elsewhere for hospital payment policy and for assessments of the business case for patient safety, this is an important gap in the literature. Each of the adverse events was associated with positive excess costs, ranging from $29,501 (metabolic derangement) to $66,412 (pressure ulcers). Extrapolation from the study hospitals yielded a provincial estimate of $481 million in annual excess costs attributable to the adverse events, which represents 2.8 percent of Ontario’s total hospital expenditures. Several of the adverse events were also associated with significant excess rates of death, readmission, and ambulatory care use. These results suggest that there are economic as well as ethical reasons to improve patient safety in Ontario hospitals. Estimates of adverse event costs were highly sensitive to coding error. The excess cost of adverse events is likely to be significantly underestimated if the error is ignored. This finding, coupled with the observation that the likelihood of error is ignored in most studies, suggests that previous assessments of the business case for patient safety may have been biased against the cost effectiveness of patient safety improvements. Furthermore, the observed extent of institutional level variation in adverse event coding indicates that administrative data are an inadequate basis for adverse event payment policies or for public reporting of adverse event rates.

Organic Carbon Cycling in East China Sea Shelf Sediments: Linkages with Hypoxia

The Changjiang River provides the main source of sediment and terrestrial derived organic carbon (OC) to the Changjiang large delta-front estuary (LDE) in the East China Sea (ECS). This study analyzed bulk OC, biomarkers including lignin and plant pigment, black carbon (BC) on ECS sediments sampled in winter 2009 and 2010 in order to study the OC cycling under the influence of natural and anthropogenic disturbance. Low-oxygen tolerant foraminiferal microfossils were analyzed in another two sediment cores to study the historical hypoxia events in the Changjiang LDE. Bulk carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio and stable isotope δ13C in the surface sediment samples indicated a mixture source of terrestrial, deltaic and marine derived OC. Refractory BC and reworked marine OC seemed to comprise most of the OC pool with older, less reactive signatures as deduced from ∆14C, and BC analyses. Winter wind/wave energy and hydrodynamic sorting had a substantial winnowing effect on surface sediment OC redistribution. As a result, the highest lignin concentration shifted to the south during the 2010 cruise after the summer flood event. In addition, algal inputs from local deltaic lakes due to eutrophication and/or lateral transport likely caused the observed lack of benthic-pelagic coupling of pigment concentrations between the surface sediments and the water column after the summer flood in 2010. For the down-core sediment, the mass accumulation rate distribution followed the dispersal pathway of the ECS sediment. Terrestrial and marine derived OC showed significant spatial and temporal distribution. Lignin rich materials were better preserved in sediments closer to the coast while offshore sediments tended to be composed of lignin-poor, degraded OC, that were likely hydrodynamically sorted to a long distance during transport. Besides eutrophication, plant pigments indicated that marine-derived OC was mostly deposited in the sediment mixed layer with decay in the underlying sediment accumulation layer. The total OC standing stock since 1900 is approximately 1.62±1.15 kgC m^-2, about 1/10 of the total OC stock in all the middle and lower lakes in the Changjiang catchment. There has been an increase in the number of hypoxic bottom water events on the Changjiang LDE over the past 60 yrs indicated from the increases in low-oxygen tolerant foraminiferal microfossils due to excess deposition of OC and summer stratification.

Stochastic Simulation Methods for Precipitation and Streamflow Time Series

One major acknowledged challenge in daily precipitation is the inability to model extreme events in the spectrum of events. These extreme events are rare but may cause large losses. How to realistically simulate extreme behavior of daily precipitation is necessary and important. To that end, a hybrid probability distribution is developed. The logic of this distribution is to simulate the low to moderate values by an exponential distribution and extremes by a generalized Pareto distribution. Compared with alternatives, the developed hybrid distribution is capable of simulating the entire range of precipitation amount and is much easier to use. The hybrid distribution is then used to construct a bivariate discrete-continuous mixed distribution, which is used for building a daily precipitation generator. The developed generator can successfully reproduce extreme events. Compared with other widely used generators, the most important advantage of the developed generator is that it is apt at extrapolating values significantly beyond the upper range of observed data. The major challenge in monthly streamflow simulation is referred to the underrepresentation of inter-annual variability. The inter-annual variability is often related with sustained droughts or periods of high flows. Preserving inter-annual variability is thus of particular importance for the long-term management of water resources systems. To that end, variables conveying such inter-annual signals should be used as covariates. This requires models that must be flexible at incorporating as many covariates as necessary. Keeping this point in mind, a joint conditional density estimation network is developed. Therein, the joint distribution of streamflows of two adjacent months is assumed to follow a specific parametric family. Parameters of the distribution are estimated by an artificial neural network. Due to the seasonal concentration of precipitation or the joint effect of rainfall and snowmelt, monthly streamflow distribution sometimes may exhibit a bimodal shape. To reproduce bimodality, nonparametric models are often preferred. However, the simulated sequences from existing nonparametric models represent too close a resemblance to historical record. To address this issue, while retaining typical merits of nonparametric models, a multi-model regression-sampling algorithm with a few weak assumptions is developed. Collecting hydrometric data is the first step for building hydrologic models, and for planning, design, operation, and management of water resource systems. In this dissertation, an entropy-theory-based criterion, termed maximum information minimum redundancy, is proposed for hydrometric monitoring network evaluation and design. Compared with existing similar approaches, the criterion is apt at finding stations with high information content, and locating independent stations.

Life Exposures to Traumatic Events and Chronic Strains Among Older Mexican-Origin Individuals

The United States Latino population has experienced unprecedented growth in the past several decades. Despite these growing numbers there has been relatively little research that explores how exposure to negative life events and chronic strains affects the physical health outcomes of Latinos. This thesis examines the extent to which traumatic life events and chronic strains affect the physical health outcomes of foreign-born and native-born Mexican-origin individuals (age 45 an older) residing along the U.S./Mexico border. Results from the multivariate analysis show that there is no direct association between traumatic life events and self-reported health. However, chronic strains were found to negatively impact the well-being of both foreign-born and native-born groups. Finally, the hypothesis suggesting that foreign-born respondents would fare better in terms of health (Latino/Hispanic paradox) compared to their native-born counterparts is not supported, with the results shown to be consistently in the opposite direction. Future research is needed on the interplay between different types of stressors and physical health outcomes among Mexican-origin individuals.

Advances in Cross-Entropy Methods

The cross-entropy method is an established technique for solving difficult estimation, simulation, and optimisation problems. The method has its origins in an adaptive importance sampling procedure for rare-event estimation published by R. Y. Rubinstein in 1997. In that publication, the adaptive procedure produces a parametric probability density function whose parameters minimise the variance of the associated likelihood ratio estimator. This variance minimisation can also be viewed as minimising a measure of divergence to the minimum-variance importance sampling density over all members of the parametric family in question. Soon thereafter it was realised that the same adaptive importance sampling procedure could be used to solve combinatorial optimisation problems by viewing the set of solutions to the optimisation problem as a rare-event. This realisation led to the debut of the cross-entropy method in 1999, where it was introduced as a modification to the existing adaptive importance sampling procedure, with a different choice of directed divergence measure, in particular, the Kullback-Leibler cross-entropy. The contributions of this thesis are threefold. Firstly, in a review capacity, it provides an up-to-date consolidation of material on the cross-entropy method and its generalisations, as well as a collation of background material on importance sampling and Monte Carlo methods. The reviews are elucidated with original commentary and examples. Secondly, two new major applications of the cross-entropy methodology to optimisation problems are presented, advancing the boundary of knowledge on cross-entropy in the applied arena. Thirdly, two contributions to the methodological front are (a) an original extension of the generalised cross-entropy framework which enables one to construct state- and time-dependent importance sampling algorithms, and (b) a new algorithm for counting solutions to difficult binary-encoded problems.
