Vliv externích událostí na hodnotu tržní kapitalizace společnosti / The Impact of External Events on the Market Capitalization of Companies

Zelenka, Jaroslav January 2012 (has links)
This diploma thesis analyses the relationship between external events (i.e. events with impact within the Czech Republic which cannot be influenced by local firms) and the value of market capitalization of companies on Prague Stock Exchange. The analysis of the 1994 to 2012 time series showed that even the most important political, economical and other events specific for the Czech Republic only have marginal impacts on values of companies on the Czech stock market. The impacts of corporate events proved to have much stronger such effects. The most advisable investment recommendation thus seems to be to ignore external events when deciding in which stocks to invest.

THE IMPACT OF OPERATIONAL RISK LOSS EVENT ANNOUNCEMENTS ON THE COST OF CAPITAL OF U.S. BANKS

Thompson, Rose M. 16 May 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to examine whether U.S. banks that announced material operational risk loss (oprisk loss) events can still enjoy a lower cost of capital. I use the bank's credit rating as a proxy for the cost of debt capital, and the actual oprisk loss amounts announced by publicly traded U.S. banks for $10 million and over during the period 1998 to 2012 compiled from my own database. I also investigate whether the type of oprisk loss event and business line in which the loss event was incurred matter to credit rating agencies. I perform additional analysis to determine whether a downgrade in a bank's credit rating associated with the announcement of a material oprisk loss amount impacts the bank's reputation. This study focuses on the U.S. banking industry because of the increased market and regulatory scrutiny of oprisk losses; especially during the financial crisis of 2008 to 2010. The logistic analysis shows that banks' announcement of material oprisk loss amount is associated with a decline in credit ratings. The findings did not support the position that the type of loss event and business line in which the loss event was incurred matter to credit rating agencies. The results for the event study show that a downgrade in a bank's credit rating associated with an announcement of a material loss amount has a robust, statistically significant negative stock market reaction. Furthermore, the results reveal that the losses in market value significantly exceed the announced loss amounts associated with credit rating downgrades, indicating reputational loss to the banks. This research was limited to announcements of material oprisk loss amounts by U.S. banks publicly traded on major U.S. stock exchanges. Investigating the impact of announcements of material oprisk loss amounts by financial institutions publicly listed on major stock exchanges worldwide provides an avenue for future research. This study contributes to the literature on operational risk and the cost of debt capital as reflected in credit ratings by providing empirical evidence of the impact of oprisk losses on credit ratings of U.S. banks.

Stressors, Social Support, and Stress Reactions: A Meta-Analysis

Piper, Lynn J. 08 1900 (has links)
This study examined, via a meta-analysis, the relations among stressors, social support, and stress reactions. Unexpectedly, small to medium negative, but robust effect sizes were found for the stressors-social support relation. As expected the stressor-stress reaction relation was positive, and the social support-stress reaction relation was negative. Both relations had small to medium effect sizes that ranged from weak to very robust. The direct effect of social support on the stressor-stress reaction was generally supported, whereas the suppressor and mediating models were not supported. Furthermore, the findings were inconclusive for the moderator effect of social support. Non-interpersonal traumas appear different in the stressor-social support and social support-stress reaction relations compared to other trauma types. These findings have important clinical implications.

Intersecting the Maputo Fishery Harbour : architecture as threshold between fixed and fluid

Devenish, Paul Gregory 08 July 2012 (has links)
This dissertation details the design of a fish processing and distribution building in the Fishery Port of Maputo. The ‘port’ is explored as a threshold between a city and the ocean and the perceived spatial permanence of city form is brought into dialogue with the constantly changing forces of the harbour across this threshold. The cyclic fluidity of civic life mediates this dialogue to achieve an architecture conscious and manifest of the temporal. / Dissertation (MArch(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Architecture / unrestricted
