A semantica das relações anaforicas entre eventos / The semantics of anaphoric relations between events

Basso, Renato Miguel 14 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Edson Françozo / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-14T10:07:06Z (GMT). / Abstract: In this thesis, we evaluated Davidson's (1967) statement according to which event anaphora and (ordinary) object anaphora use the same linguistic resources. Davidson uses the evidence of anaphora not only to postulate events in the ontology but also as an argument for considering them as ordinary objects (as individuals). However, as we investigate the linguistic mechanisms mobilized in event anaphora and the ones mobilized in (ordinary) object anaphora we found significant differences, a conclusion which compromises Davidson's assumptions about the metaphysics of events. In the first part of this thesis, we present and defend a version of the theory of events postulated by Davidson that treats them as individuals in the same way as other objects. We look briefly at other theories that take events as properties of moments of time and theories that take events as propositional entities. Each of these theories has their merits and problems, but our intention is to follow Davidson's formulation closely, in order to evaluate his claims about anaphora event. We investigate the differences between deixis and anaphora, a theme that involves any discussion of the terms used in anaphora. In the second part, our attention goes to event anaphora when the antecedents are sentential expressions (i.e., that are not DPs). With this kind of antecedent, the preferred anaphoric terms are demonstratives, and we investigate the demonstrative pronoun 'isso' and demonstrative descriptions ('esse / essa / aquele / aquela N'). We present the state-of-the art of the studies of demonstrative, noting that they can be treated as referring or as quantificational expressions. Since the debate is very complex and still in its beginning, we present two analysis of event anaphora with sentential antecedents: one that takes the anaphoric terms as referential, and one that takes them as quantificational. However, despite this difference in the analysis, the result we reached is similar, and it shows that the mechanisms behind the anaphora of events are closer to the anaphora of propositional entities than to the anaphora of ordinary objects, against the Davidsonian thesis. In the third part, we analyze the anaphora of events in which the antecedent is a nominal structure (i.e., DPs); with this kind of antecedent the preferred anaphoric terms are definite and demonstrative descriptions. We also investigate the semantics of nominalizations and their relationship to events conveyed by inflected action verbs. We assume, as is common practice in the literature on events, that sentences with an inflected action verb and their nominalized counterparts have the same logical form. We show that this assumption leads to undesired results when we consider event anaphora. In the conclusion, we point out that adopting the concept of event as an object can not be sustained from the point of view of anaphoric phenomenona, since event anaphora resembles the anaphora of abstract entities such as propositions, and not object anaphora. This conclusion has implications for contemporary semantic theories which naively equate events and objects. / Universidade Estadual de Campi / Linguistica / Doutor em Linguística

Lower Aptian Comparative Stratigraphy of the Basco-Cantabrian Region (Spain) and Eastern Cordillera (Colombia): implications for local factors in the depositional record of Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a (OAE-1a)

Gaona Narvaez, Tatiana 26 June 2013 (has links)
An important episode of carbon sequestration, Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a (OAE-1a), characterizes the Lower Aptian worldwide, and is mostly known from deeper-water settings. The present work of two Lower Aptian deposits, Madotz (N Spain) and Curití Quarry (Colombia), is a multiproxy study that includes fossil assemblages, microfacies, X-ray diffraction bulk and clay mineralogy, elemental analyses (major, minor, trace elements), Rock-Eval pyrolysis, biomarkers, inorganic and organic carbon content, and stable carbon isotopes. The results provide baseline evidence of the local and global controlling environmental factors influencing OAE-1a in shallow-water settings. The data also improve our general understanding of the conditions under which organic-carbon-rich deposits accumulate. The sequence at Madotz includes four intervals (Unit 1; Subunits 2a, 2b and 2c) that overlap the times prior to, during and after the occurrence of OAE-1a. The Lower Unit 1(3m thick) is essentially siliciclastic, and Subunit 2a (20m) contains Urgonian carbonate facies that document abruptly changing platform conditions prior to OAE-1a. Subunit 2b (24.4 m) is a mixed carbonate-siliciclastic facies with orbitolinid-rich levels that coincides with OAE-1a δ13C stages C4-C6, and is coeval with the upper part of the Deshayesites forbesi ammonite zone. Levels with pyrite and the highest TOC values (0.4-0.97%), interpreted as accumulating under suboxic conditions, and are restricted to δ13C stages C4 and C5. The best development of the suboxic facies is at the level representing the peak of the transgression. Subunit 2c, within δ13C stage C7, shows a return of the Urgonian facies. The 23.35-m section at Curití includes a 6.3-m interval at the base of the Paja Formation dominated by organic-rich marlstones and shales lacking benthic fossils and bioturbation, with TOC values as high as 8.84%. The interval overlies a level containing reworked and phosphatized assemblages of middle Barremian to lowest Aptian ammonites. The range of values and the overall pattern of the δ13Corg (-22.05‰ to -20.47‰) in the 6.3m-interval is comparable with Lower Aptian δ13C stage C7. Thus, conditions of oxygen depletion at this site also occurred after Oceanic Anoxic Event-1a, which developed between carbon isotope stages C3 and C6. Both sites, Madotz and Curití, attest to the importance of terrigenous and nutrient fluxes in increasing OM productivity that led to episodic oxygen deficiency.

This is a study on practices that come up in the intersection between religion and leisure, carried out in order to understand how a sphere influences the other, through a search of young evangelicals. The religion was treated as a cultural system and the leisure as a dimension of culture characterized by personal quest for pleasure. Adopting the ethnographic method, many leisure activities of young people have been mapped. Some who initially were not perceived as such. Through the notions circuit of evangelical events and slice of believers such practices were analyzed together. The way young people experience their faith and enjoy your leisure shows that the believer is not necessarily averse to leisure. A retrospective of their cultural system indicates that it may never have been. Moderation, sectarianism and a type of hedonism seem dispute the influence of leisure. Today, among the young people surveyed, this dispute is translated into several individual summaries, although, for them, some are more desirable than others.

The Use of Complementary and Integrative Medicines and Exploring Natural Health Product-Drug Interactions In Vitro in the Management of Pediatric Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Mazhar, Hajra 16 June 2020 (has links)
This thesis applied a novel interdisciplinary approach for pharmacovigilance to examine the use of complementary and integrative medicine (CIM), focusing on herbal remedies, to manage pediatric attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The safety and potential risk of herb-drug interactions in ADHD management were first evaluated through an assessment of available information on the safety and efficacy of natural health products (NHPs) commonly used by ADHD patients as a means of identifying knowledge gaps. A clinical questionnaire was administered to caregivers of pediatric patients with ADHD to determine the factors and related outcomes of CIM use, including adverse events. A systematic search was conducted to further identify clinical adverse events involving herbal remedies and ADHD drugs to determine causal links to herb-drug interactions. In vitro analysis of identified herbal remedies was conducted to determine their potential for pharmacokinetic interactions, specifically on carboxylesterase-1 (CES1) mediated metabolism. The presented research builds on otherwise scarce evidence of the safety of herbal remedies for ADHD, particularly with respect to herb-drug interactions and adverse events (AEs) associated with concurrent use of NHPs and ADHD prescription drugs. Beyond studies conducted on the pharmacokinetic safety of herbal remedies through the cytochrome P450 pathways that metabolize some ADHD drugs, including amphetamine, atomoxetine and guanfacine, few data were available for CES1, which metabolizes methylphenidate, the first line of drug used to manage ADHD. The clinical questionnaire revealed that 40% of patients had used CIM and confirmed the use of a variety of CIM. Moreover, the majority of CIM users were also concurrently taking ADHD medication, and eight mild adverse events were self-reported. The systematic search on the adverse event reporting system highlighted a potential NHP-drug interaction between methylphenidate and St. John’s wort, and the overall poor quality of NHP-related adverse event reports. As a follow-up from the adverse event results, various commercial St. John’s wort products showed variable inhibition of recombinant human CES1 in vitro. Although the concentration of marker phytochemicals was not correlated to inhibition, hyperforin showed stronger activity than hypericin and quercetin. The preliminary in vitro investigation revealed that the herbal remedies used by ADHD patients have the potential to interact with CES1 mediated metabolism, with Rhodiola rosea identified as the most potent inhibitor. Further investigation on various commercial products of Rhodiola rosea revealed both reversible and irreversible inhibition of recombinant CES1. However, the inhibition was not dependent on the concentration of marker phytochemicals, and rosarin, rosavin, rosin, and salidroside were not potent inhibitors of recombinant CES1. Moreover, a commercial Rhodiola rosea extract showed concentration-dependent inhibition of human liver microsome meditated metabolism of methylphenidate. Overall, results from this thesis suggest potential risk from use of NHPs concurrently with conventional medicine used to manage ADHD. Improved evidence and pharmacovigilance for the use of NHPs in a pediatric population is warranted.

Photométrie et Astrométrie des Satellites de Jupiter : application à la campagne de phénomènes mutuels 2015 / Photometry and Astrometry of Jupiter Satellites : application to the 2015 mutual events campaign

Saquet, Eléonore 26 September 2017 (has links)
The year 2015 was a favorable opportunity for the mutual event observations of the galilean satellites of Jupiter. Mutual events occur when the Earth and the Sun cross the common plane of their orbits. This configuration happens every six years when the apparent Jovian declinations of Earth and Sun become zero.During this campaign, we observed 236 events, and we received more than 600 light curves. We developed an astrometric reduction of these light curves based on an existing model. To reduce the light curves, we used Hapke’s model of reflectance and emittance. To improve the reduction method, we led an observational campaign to record photometric data of the galilean moons. This work was fundamental to upgrade the last photometric data on the galilean satellites. Ground based photometry of these moons had never been done in the methane band or in RGB bands. The astrometric data extracted from the light curves were used by V. Lainey to fit his dynamical model of the galilean satellites and build new ephemerides. Comparisons between ephemerides were made in order to evaluate the impact of the mutual event observations on the determination of the dynamical parameters.

Johansson, David, Borgvald, Fredrik January 2019 (has links)
Background: Myocardial infarction is one of the most common diseases that lead to sudden death around the world. In Sweden, 25300 people is affected by MI each year. Stress, anxiety, depression and an unhealthy lifestyle are just some risk factors that increase the risk of MI. After a MI, lifestyle changes are required to achieve good health, such as physical activation, healthy diets and smoking cessation. Aim, the purpose of this literature study was to describe how people experience their everyday life and lifestyle changes after a MI. Method, this thesis is a descriptive study that is based on 12 articles with both qualitative and quantitative approach. The articles selected correspond to the purpose of the study. The PubMed database via MedLine was used to find the articles. Main results, the study shows that many patients experience problems in everyday life after a MI and have difficulty adjusting to the lifestyle changes that are necessary after a MI .The result shows that people's mental, emotional, physical health and social life are negatively affected after a MI. This can lead to problems in everyday life, like relationships and intimacy. In conclusion, MI can lead to an emotional, existential and physical daily struggle. The nurse should be able to provide support, information and rehabilitation to the person concerned so that they can return to a more healthy everyday life. People may also need help with different coping strategies by the nurse to better handle the new life situation. People’s experiences of the daily life can provide the nurse with valuable knowledge, which can improve the future care for the person concerned.

Sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av patientutbildning inom diabetes typ 2

Johansson, Emilia, Nilsson, Anton January 2020 (has links)
Background: Diabetes mellitus type 2 is a chronic disease that is becoming more common in society. In 2019, 463 million adults were estimated to live with the diagnosis and the figure is expected to rise. Complications of the disease are many but the most serious are hyperglycemia and cardiovascular changes. The care consists largely of self-care activities to promote physical activity, healthy weight and smoking cessation. Self-care involves a partnership with the nurse, which means that the patient himself must actively participate. Purpose: The purpose of this literature review study was to illuminate nurses' experiences patient education in type 2 diabetes. Method: This study is a review study with a qualitative design based on ten studies. The studies were analyzed using content analysis to identify categories and subcategories that corresponded to the purpose. Results: The analysis resulted in two main categories: Nurse's experiences of barriers and Nurse's experiences of her identity in patient education. This means that there are different roles that the nurse must play, which can lead to uncertainty. In some contexts, the nurses also experienced an inadequacy. Conclusion: The nurses also felt that there were barriers of various kinds that prevented adequate patient education. At the same time, various obstacles were noted structurally and personally to adapt their role to these principles.

: A study of the events at the Gothenburg City Library

Stengard, Annika January 2019 (has links)
This master’s thesis aims to discover how the Gothenburg City Library works to foster a democratic society, thus fulfilling one of the main requirements set by the Swedish library law. The study will analyse how the library interprets its democratic mission by focusing on three theories of democracy: representative democracy, participatory democracy and deliberative democracy. An intersectional approach to the material will aim to further explore how accessible the events are and what consequences this might have on the patrons level of democratic participation in society. This was done through a case study of the events taking place at the library during 2018. Official documents that regulate or affect the library’s events were included to better understand how the democratic work set by the library law is interpreted on different levels of authority. The study found that the Gothenburg city library takes its democratic mission seriously and has an extensive event calendar. By adapting to the changing needs of society to create an accessible library, they give their patrons an opportunity to participate in events that will influence their society and give them the knowledge needed to actively participate in their communities. However, creating accessible programs for everyone is a never-ending challenge that requires national support and cooperation between libraries on a nation-wide scale. This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.
