Charlotte Bray's "Here Everything Shines": Interview, Analysis and Performance Guide

Kuscer, Lana 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation examines a recent work for flute and piano, Here Everything Shines, by a living composer, Charlotte Bray, including a study, analysis and performance guide. The composition was largely inspired by the late Cape Verdean singer Cesária Évora and her song Petit Pays. My research explores the influence of Évora's song on Here Everything Shines, including the melodic development, tonal center, style and freedom of her singing and the impact the song has on a performer's interpretation of Here Everything Shines. The study examines the text of the song, the emotions evoked and reflects on the compositional elements in Here Everything Shines. Originally written for flute and guitar and commissioned by Tom Kerstens for International Guitar Foundation, Here Everything Shines was published in 2015. Bray transcribed it for violin and piano at request of Darragh Morgan and Mary Dullea and subsequently for flute and piano at my request. This dissertation compares the three versions for flute and guitar, violin and piano, and flute and piano and examines the variations between flute and violin as well as guitar and piano parts. The performance guide includes the composer's input on both interpretation and implementation of her ideas throughout the work.

Financial Resources and Technology to Transition to 450mm Semiconductor Wafer Foundries

Pastore, Thomas Earl 01 January 2014 (has links)
Future 450mm semiconductor wafer foundries are expected to produce billions of low cost, leading-edge processors, memories, and wireless sensors for Internet of Everything applications in smart cities, smart grids, and smart infrastructures. The problem has been a lack of wise investment decision making using traditional semiconductor industry models. The purpose of this study was to design decision-making models to conserve financial resources from conception to commercialization using real options to optimize production capacity, to defer an investment, and to abandon the project. The study consisted of 4 research questions that compared net present value from real option closed-form equations and binomial lattice models using the Black-Scholes option pricing theory. Three had focused on sensitivity parameters. Moore's second law was applied to find the total foundry cost. Data were collected using snowball sampling and face-to-face surveys. Original survey data from 46 Americans in the U.S.A. were compared to 46 Europeans in Germany. Data were analyzed with a paired-difference test and the Box-Behnken design was employed to create prediction models to support each hypothesis. Data from the real option models and survey findings indicate American 450mm foundries will likely capture greater value and will choose the differentiation strategy to produce premium chips, whereas higher capacity, cost leadership European foundries will produce commodity chips. Positive social change and global quality of life improvements are expected to occur by 2020 when semiconductors will be needed for the $14 trillion Internet of Everything market to create safe self-driving vehicles, autonomous robots, smart homes, novel medical electronics, wearable computers with streaming augmented reality information, and digital wallets for cashless societies.

Latitudinal Gradients in Body Size in Marine Tardigrades

Bartels, Paul J., Fontaneto, Diego, Roszkowska, Milena, Nelson, Diane R., Kaczmarek, Łukasz 16 March 2020 (has links)
Homeotherms and many poikilotherms display a positive relationship between body size and latitude, but this has rarely been investigated in microscopic animals. We analysed all published records of marine Tardigrada to address whether microscopic marine invertebrates have similar ecogeographical patterns to macroscopic animals. The data were analysed using spatially explicit generalized least squares models and linear models. We looked for latitudinal patterns in body size and species richness, testing for sampling bias and phylogenetic constraints. No latitudinal pattern was detected for species richness, and sampling bias was the strongest correlate of species richness. A hump-shaped increase in median body size with latitude was found, and the effect remained significant for the Northern Hemisphere but not for the Southern. The most significant effect supporting the latitudinal gradient was on minimum body size, with smaller species disappearing at higher latitudes. Our results suggest that biogeographical signals were observed for body size, albeit difficult to detect in poorly studied groups because of swamping from biased sampling effort and from low sample size. We did not find a significant correlation with the latitudinal pattern of body size and ecologically relevant net primary productivity.

Development of a Simulation Model for Combined PVT and Ground Source Heat Pump Systems : A TRNSYS Model Created for Commercial Use

OLAUSSON, HANNA, WERNIUS, EMMA January 2021 (has links)
The Swedish government has set a target of a 100% renewable electricity system by 2040. To reach this goal, many actions have to be undertaken. Electrification of buildings is one action to be undertaken as the residential sector accounts for a large share of greenhouse gas emissions, where the most energy efficient method is to use heat pumps. Ground Source Heat Pumps typically have the highest efficiency out of the different heat pumps. These types of heat pumps are most commonly used in single family houses, as multi-family houses often are located in highly densely areas. However, when adding hybrid PV/thermal collectors to ground source heat pump systems, studies have shown that the borehole drilling area can be reduced, which increases the potential for combined PV/thermal collectors and ground source heat pump systems in multi-family areas.  In this project, a time-efficient, flexible and user- friendly model was developed to increase the potential for designing combined PV/thermal collectors and ground source heat pump systems. The model is based on the research model by Sommerfeldt and Madani (2019), where the flexibility and time step of the model was investigated and adjusted. The finished model was verified to the model by Sommerfelt and Madani (2019). Overall, the results show that the new model gives similar results to the original model, despite all adjustments. The heaviest adjustments were made in the heat pump where the quantitative results show a mean bias error of -0.51 kWh and a total yearly difference of -5.18% for the compressor power. The corresponding values for the condenser heating rate are -1.05 kWh and -2.86%. The user is able to change boundary conditions such as location, PVT array, building size, and borehole field size. The model takes approximately 2 minutes to run for a 20 years simulation on a business grade desktop computer, which is a five-hour twenty minute reduction from the original research model and assumed to be an acceptable time range for a commercial applications.

Becoming the third generation: negotiating modern selves in Nigerian Bildungsromane of the 21st century

Smit, Willem Jacobus 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (English))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / ENGLISH ABTRACT: In recent years, original and exciting developments have been taking place in Nigerian literature. This new body of literature, collectively referred to as the ―third generation‖, has lately received international acclaim. In this emergent literature, the negotiation of a new, contemporary identity has become a central focus. At the same time, recent Nigerian literary texts are articulating responses to various developments in the Nigerian nation: Nigeria‘s current political and socio-economic situation, diverse forms of cultural hybridisation, as well as an increasing trans-national consciousness, to mention only a few. Three 21st-century novels – Chimamanda Nogzi Adichie‘s Purple Hibiscus (2004), Sefi Atta‘s Everything Good Will Come (2004) and Chris Abani‘s GraceLand (2005) – reveal how new avenues of identity-negotiation and formation are being explored in various contemporary Nigerian situations. This study tracks the ways in which the Bildungsroman, the novel of self-development, serves as a vehicle through which this new identity is articulated. Concurrently, this study also grapples with the ways in which the articulation and negotiation of this new identity reshapes the conventions of the classical Bildungsroman genre, thereby establishing a unique and contemporary Nigerian Bildungsroman for the 21st century. The identity that is being negotiated by the third generation is multi-layered and inclusive, as opposed to the exclusive and unitary identities which are observable in Nigerian novels of the previous two generations. Such inclusivity, as well as the hybrid environments in which this identity is being negotiated, results in a form of ―identity layering‖. Thus, the individual comes into being at the point of intersection, overlap and collision of various modes of self-making. Such ―layering‖ allows the individual, albeit not without challenge, to perform a self-styled identity, which does not necessarily conform to the dictates of society. At the same time, the identity is negotiated by means of an engagement, in the form of intertextual dialoguing, with Nigeria‘s preceding literary generations. The most prominent arenas in which this new identity is negotiated include silenced domestic spaces, religo-cultural traditions, constructs of gender and nation, as well as in multicultural and hybrid communities. The investigation conducted in this thesis will, consequently, also focus on such areas of Nigerian life, as they are portrayed in the focal texts. Various theories of literary analysis (some of which specifically focus on Nigeria), Bildungsroman theory, theories of allegory, (imaginative) nation formation, feminism, gender and performativity, as well as theories of cultural identity and cultural exchanges, will form the critical and theoretical framework within which this investigation will be executed. Chapter One explores how Purple Hibiscus‘s protagonist, Kambili Achike, negotiates her gender identity and voice in order to constitute herself as an independent, self-authoring individual. Chapter Two, which focuses on Everything Good Will Come, investigates the dialectic relationship between Enitan Taiwo‘s national and personal identity, which inevitably leads to her quest to reconceive her gender identity, since national identity, as she finds out, is always an engendered construct. In its analysis of GraceLand, Chapter Three turns to the difficulties that Elvis Oke faces when he attempts to negotiate an alternative masculine identity within a rigid patriarchal system and between the cracks of a fraudulent African modernity.

PUF-enabled blockchain for IoT security : A comparative study / PUF-enabled blockchain for IoT security : A comparative study

Bisiach, Jonathon, Elfving, Victor January 2021 (has links)
The introduction of Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs) and lightweight consensus algorithms to aid in the bolstering of security and privacy in both IoT and IoE does show a great deal of promise not only in these areas, but in resource cost over traditional methods of blockchain.  However, several previous studies make claims regarding performance of novel solutions without providing detailed information as to the physical components of their experiments.  This comparative study shows that Proof of Authentication (PoAh) performs the best out of three selected consensus algorithms and that the claims made regarding the performance of PUFChain and Proof of PUF-enabled Authentication (PoP) could not be replicated in this instance.

Feasibility Study of Vehicular Teleoperation over Cellular Network in Urban Scenario / Genomförbarhet studie av teleoperation av fordon via mobilnätverk i stadsscenario

Jin, Yifei January 2017 (has links)
With the continuous progress on autonomous vehicle and remote drivingtechniques, connection quality demands are changing compared withconventional quality of service. Vehicle to everything communication, asthe connectivity basis for these applications, has been built up on LongTerm Evolution basis, but due to various ethical and environmental issues, few implementations have been made in reality. Therefore simulation approachesare believed to provide valuable insights. To fully model an LTE vehicular network, in this work we first providea comparison study to select the preferable LTE simulator. Aimingto integrate communication nodes with mobility, a solution for simulationframework is developed based on a state-of-art comparison study on theexisting simulator frameworks. We then further develop the network simulator, and complement it with hybrid wireless channel modeling, channeland quality of service aware scheduler, and admission control strategies. Interms of instant optimization of the network, real-time access is emulatedfor external devices to communicate with the simulator. In this thesis, the evaluation of the framework performance considers two aspects: theperformance of the simulator in LTE V2X use case and the feasibility ofthe service, specifically, remote driving, under realistic network capacity. For our framework, the results indicate that it is feasible to realize remotedriving in an LTE urban scenario, but, as an example, we show that foran area of Kista, five vehicles could be hold by a base-station with guaranteedservice at most. / Med kontinuerliga framstegen p°a autonomt fordon och fj¨arrkontrollteknikf¨or¨andras kravet p°a anslutningskvalitet i j¨amf¨orelse med konventionell servicekvalitet.Fordon till allting (V2X) kommunikation, som anslutningsgrundf¨or dessa applikationer, har byggts upp p°a basis av Long TermEvolution (LTE) system, men p°a grund av olika etiska och milj¨om¨assigaproblem har f°a implementeringar gjorts i verkligheten. Exploring Augmented Reality for enhancing ADAS and Remote Driving through 5G : Study of applying augmented reality to improve safety in ADAS and remote driving use cases

Meijer, Max Jan January 2020 (has links)
This thesis consists of two projects focusing on how 5G can be used to make vehicles safer. The first project focuses on conceptualizing near-future use cases of how Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) can be enhanced through 5G technology. Four concepts were developed in collaboration with various industry partners. These concepts were successfully demonstrated in a proof-of-concept at the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) “The 5G Path of Vehicle-to-Everything Communication: From Local to Global” conference in Turin, Italy. This proof-of-concept was the world’s first demonstration of such a system. The second project focuses on a futuristic use case, namely remote operation of semi-autonomous vehicles (sAVs). As part of this work, it was explored if augmented reality (AR) can be used to warn remote operators of dangerous events. It was explored if such augmentations can be used to compensate during critical events. These events are defined as occurrences in which the network conditions are suboptimal, and information provided to the operator is limited. To evaluate this, a simulator environment was developed that uses eye- tracking technology to study the impact of such scenarios through user studies. The simulator establishes an extendable platform for future work. Through experiments, it was found that AR can be beneficial in spotting danger. However, it can also be used to directly affect the scanning patterns at which the operator views the scene and directly affect their visual scanning behavior. Dessa koncept demonstrerade i ett proof-of- concept på 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) “5G Path of Vehicle to to Everything Communication: From Local to Global” -konferensen i Turin, Italien.
