Syftet med detta arbete var att undersöka hur Ansel Adams (1902–1984) fotografier kan användas i interpretationen av stycket Visions of Light av Eric Ewazen (1954–), som är inspirerat av dessa fotografier. Studien bygger på en djupgående litteraturstudie kring de tre bilder som Ewazen inspirerades av: Monolith – the Face of Half Dome, Moonrise, Hermandez, New Mexico och Thunderclouds, White Mountain Range. Studien innehåller också en analys av stycket och en arbetsmetod för hur dessa fotografier kan användas i interpretationen presenteras där olika aspekter av fotografierna kopplas till stycket utifrån analysen. Musikaliska associationer – vad händer i vårt inre när vi lyssnar på musik? Syftet med denna konstnärliga uppsats är att fördjupa mig i ämnet musikaliska associationer och dess koppling till musikteori. Ämnet är relativt outforskat och jag har därför valt att utgå ifrån mina egna erfarenheter och använda mina egna musikaliska associationer som grund. Studien tar avstamp i musikstycket Sonata for trumpet and piano av Eric Ewazen och genom litteraturstudier på tidigare forskning. Genom musikteoretisk analys och analys av mina musikaliska associationer av musikstycket diskuterar jag hur dessa hänger ihop och om det går att dra några teoretiska slutsatser utfrån mitt resultat. Två grundliga analyser gav mig slutsatsen att orsaken till musikaliska associationer kan bero på musikteoretiska faktorer i det specifika musikstycket, kombinerat med psykologiska faktorer så som musikalisk bakgrund, erfarenheter och privata kopplingar. Master of Music / Department of Music / Gary C. Mortenson / This Master's report contains the biographical, harmonic, and style analysis of the five compositions performed on the author's Master's recital that occurred on October 11th, 2007. The analyses included will provide foundational information for thorough study of Richard Peaslee's Nightsongs, Eric Ewazen's Sonata for Trumpet and Piano, Antonio Carlos Jobim's Desafinado, Horace Silver's Peace, and Bronislaw Kaper's Green Dolphin Street.

An historical overview of the ITG commission project is presented, as well an analysis of formal organization and significant features for two of the commissioned works: Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by Norman Dello Joio and Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by Eric Ewazen. Complete histories of all works and information concerning their premieres is chronicled. The degree of difficulty of each composition is assessed through an investigation of tessitura, range, melodic contour, endurance factors, articulation, fingerings, and technical features of the accompaniment (when applicable). Analysis of tempi and dynamics, articulation and phrasing, and timbral considerations provides additional points of study. The thirteen commissioned solo works from 1978 to 1993 are: Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by Norman Dello Joio, Concerto for Trumpet and Wind Orchestra by Bernhard Heiden, Laude by Stan Friedman, Concerto for Trumpet and Strings by Raymond Premru, Chamber Music VII: Ceremonies and Chamber Music VIII by Robert Suderburg, Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by Fisher Tull, Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra by William Schmidt, Concerto for Trumpet and Wind Ensemble by Jan Bach, Arioso for Trumpet and Woodwind Quintet by Jerzy Sapieyevsky, Invocation of Orpheus by Robert X. Rodriguez, Triptych by David Sampson, and Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by Eric Ewazen. The importance of these works and their impact on the trumpet repertoire is assessed. Possible reasons for the acceptance of some of these works by trumpeters versus the lack of acceptance of the others are proposed. Through interviews with some of the composers, analyses of the compositions and a comparative survey of performance programs by members of the International Trumpet Guild, conclusions regarding the effectiveness of the commissioning project and its future are drawn.

Mortenson / This report is an analysis and exploration of the following works: Eugène Bozza’s Caprice, Vincent Persichetti’s The Hollow Men, Halsey Stevens’s Sonata for Trumpet and Piano, Alexander Arutunian’s Concerto for Trumpet, Ernest Bloch’s Proclamation, and Eric Ewazen’s Grand Valley Fanfare. The purpose of this report is to aid performance preparation of these pieces by providing thematic and formal analysis as well as identifying general unifying elements for each piece. Once identified, these patterns will help the performer communicate the broad musical ideas to the audience by finding a balance between the technical aspects and musical statements in each work.
