The Impact of Pharmacy Mobile Application on Student Performance on NAPLEX-Based Questionnaire

Class of 2017 Abstract / Objectives: To determine if the use of RxSkills effectively improves student scores on the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX)-based questions among third and fourth-year pharmacy students at the University of Arizona (UA) College of Pharmacy. Methods: This is a pre-post interventional study using a survey of volunteer students from the classes of 2016 and 2017 at the UA College of Pharmacy. An email calling for volunteers was sent using the listserv to students providing information regarding the study. Once the pre-test was completed, instructions for downloading the mobile application were sent to the students. After six weeks of RxSkills use, a link to the post-test was sent to the students for completion. Student scores on the NAPLEX-based questions, use of the application (frequency and duration) and helpfulness, and demographic data were collected. Results: The number of participants in the study from each class was similar with 15 students from the Class of 2016 (52%) and 14 from the Class of 2017 (48%). There was no correlation between how often RxSkills was used and improvement in scores. Overall, student score on the NAPLEX-based questions were significantly improved post-RxSkills use (mean 10.48, SD 2.49) compared to pre-RxSkills use (mean 9.68, SD 2.24) with a p-value of 0.03. Conclusions: The use of RxSkills resulted in an improvement in student scores on the NAPLEX-based questions, indicating its usefulness in studying for the NAPLEX. Students would benefit from using the application when studying for this exam.

UTILIZATION OF SIMULATION TO TEACH PELVIC EXAMINATION SKILLS TO MEDICAL STUDENTS: IMPLICATIONS FOR MEDICAL EDUCATION

Medical education is changing. Physicians have less time for teaching clinical skills and for direct observation of medical students, due to sicker patients in the hospital, shorter hospital stays, competing demands of research and patient care, and implementation of the eighty hour work week for residents. The consumer movement increased awareness of medical errors, patient safety and quality of healthcare. Teaching the pelvic examination is ethically complex. Questions have arisen about medical students learning to conduct the pelvic examination on actual patients. This study utilizes the pelvic examination simulator and genital teaching associates (GTAs) to teach pelvic exam skills to optimize limited resources, as well as address safety and ethical concerns. The purpose of the study was to provide medical students with more practice in pelvic examination skills, to test a pelvic examination simulator, and to explore a new model for teaching pelvic examination skills to second year medical students. After IRB approval, one hundred sixty eight second year medical students at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine participated in the study. A two-armed trial design provided all medical students with pelvic exam training on the pelvic exam simulator and genital teaching associate. Data were gathered via an experience and demographic questionnaire, blood pressure readings, the Fear of Pelvic Examination Scale scores and performance scores after the training. Data analysis consisted of descriptive statistics, paired and independent sample t-tests and the linear mixed model. Statistical tests determined the relationship between fear, blood pressure and performance. The findings revealed that the GTA training group had significantly more fear than the pelvic exam simulator group and significantly higher performance scores than the simulator group. The gender analysis indicated that males had significantly more fear than females. Prior experience with pelvic exam simulators did not appear to reduce anxiety among medical students when first conducting pelvic exams with humans. Completion of pelvic exam training with a GTA may reduce fear substantially and make later training with the pelvic exam simulator the optimal first experience. Use of simulation in medical education reduces ethical concerns, optimizes limited resources and reduces patient safety issues.

A Cross-Sectional Analysis of Health Impacts of Inorganic Arsenic in Chemical Mixtures

Drinking groundwater is the primary way humans accumulate arsenic. Chronic exposure to inorganic arsenic (iAs) (over decades) has been shown to be associated with multiple health effects at low levels (5-10 ppb) including: cancer, elevated blood pressure and cardiovascular disease, skin lesions, renal failure, and peripheral neuropathy. Using hypertension (or high blood pressure) as a surrogate marker for cardiovascular disease, we examined the effect of iAs alone and in a mixture with other metals using a cross-sectional study of adults in United States (National Health and Examination Survey, NHANES, 2005-2010) adjusting for covariates: urinary creatinine level (mg/dL), poverty index ratio (PIR, measure of socioeconomic status, 1 to 5), age, smoking (yes/no), alcohol usage, gender, non-Hispanic Black, and overweight (BMI>=25). A logistic regression model suggests that a one-unit increase in log of inorganic arsenic increases the odds of hypertension by a factor of 1.093 (95% Confidence Interval=0.935, 1.277) adjusted for these covariates , which indicates that there was not significant evidence to claim that inorganic arsenic is a risk factor for hypertension. Biomonitoring data provides evidence that humans are not only exposed to inorganic arsenic but also to mixtures of chemicals including inorganic arsenic, total mercury, cadmium, and lead. We tested for a mixture effect of these four environmental chemicals using weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression, which takes into account the correlation among the chemicals and with the outcome. For one-unit increase in the weighted sum, the adjusted odds of developing hypertension increases by a factor of 1.027 (95% CI=0.882,1.196), which is also not significant after taking into account the same covariates. The insignificant finding may be due to the low inorganic arsenic concentration (8-620 μg /L) in US drinking water, compared to those in countries like Bangladesh where the concentrations are much higher. Literature provides conflicting evidence of the association of inorganic arsenic and hypertension in low/moderate regions; future studies, especially a large cohort study, are needed to confirm if inorganic arsenic alone or with other metals is associated with hypertension in the United States.

Title: Changes of stabilization ability and sensation of the foot after ankle injury by volleyball players Objectives: To examine if volleyball players have any changes of stabilization ability and afferent function of the foot, using examination of stabilization ability and afferent function examination of the foot after ankle injury. To discover if any interrelated connections exist between stabilization ability and afferent function of the foot after ankle injury by volleyball players. Methods: We used a single-leg stance to examine postural control. We performed a common neurological examination (two-point discrimination, graphestesia, kinesthesia and vibration sense) to examine afferent function - superficial sensation and deep sensation with two-point esthesiometer, tuning-fork, and blunt object. Results: Stabilization ability after ankle injury using a single-leg stance examination deteriorated for 62.5% probands. Afferent function of the foot after ankle injury wasn't significantly impacted. Only two-point discrimination in the middle of the instep injured foot (area Lisfranc joint) decreased by 62.5% probands. 1 Abstrakt - Examination of a witness in civil proceedings The theme of this thesis is an examination of a witness in civil proceedings. The reason for choosing this theme was the internship at the District Court I had absolved, which allowed me to become more familiar with this topic and to know certain specifics of this means of evidence. Since the examination of a witness is one of the most frequent and used means of evidence, it deserves attention by itself. The thesis is composed of eight chapters. The first chapter deals with history of examination of a witness in the Czech lands, which was significantly influenced by old Roman civil procedure. Medieval civil proceedings in its early stages used in particular official witness provided in written form. In the course of time, the civil proceedings desisted from the official witness and oral testimonies prevailed. An interesting part of this chapter is an excursion into the heart of the oldest Czech legal documents and the view of the literal legislation of testimony. Statistical analysis of pre-employment predictive indexing within the farm credit system

Featherstone / This thesis analyzes the hiring and selection processes of five Farm Credit Services (FCS) Associations within U.S. AgBank to determine the effectiveness of potential employee testing and profiling practices as a predictor of success (defined as tenure and retention) within the organization. The data provided by the five FCS Associations were used to analyze whether that the results are a successful tool in predicting the success of a potential employee. Firm managers are acutely aware of the high cost of onboarding a new employee regardless of the industry in which the firm operates. Since employee training and education often takes months, and in some cases, years, it is critical that organizations select qualified, driven, and success oriented employees so that they can minimize the cost of hiring of new employees. To select the best candidates, many firms use personality profiling examinations to determine the candidate’s fit, not only for the job, but also for the company culture. Analyzing past results can assist managers in evaluating the outcomes of the time and cost spent seeking the best employee possible. Analysis was conducted by estimating a binomial logistic regression model using the test scores for loan officer hires from five Farm Credit Associations for the time period of 1999-2009. Each of the examined character traits was an independent variable, along with variables for gender and whether the candidate was a recommended-hire. The dependent variable is whether the employee is still employed with the Farm Credit Association. Results show that while some of the independent variables are statistically significant in predicting the success of an employee, others are not. The implications therein justify the value of the predictive index as an asset to hiring managers, and also provides direction on which traits are most highly correlated with one another and with the overall composite score.
