Avaliação da tromboflebite jugular experimental em equinos tratados com heparina /

Orientador: Carlos Alberto Hussni / Banca: Hamilton Almeida Rollo / Banca: Regina Kiomi Takahira / Resumo: A tromboflebite jugular é uma das principais doenças vasculares em eqüinos, podendo levar a edema de cabeça, diminuição do desempenho atlético e até causar o óbito. A heparina é um dos medicamentos utilizados para o tratamento dessa enfermidade com o objetivo de minimizar a evolução do trombo. O objetivo desse experimento foi avaliar, por exames clínicos, laboratoriais, ultra-sonográficos e venográficos as alterações provocadas pela administração de heparina no tratamento da tromboflebite experimental em eqüinos. Dez eqüinos foram submetidos à indução de tromboflebite jugular unilateral. Os animais foram divididos em grupo controle e grupo tratado, composto por cinco animais que receberam durante 10 dias a administração de heparina. Previamente à indução da tromboflebite e diariamente após o estabelecimento da mesma foram realizados exames clínicos e ultra-sonográficos até o 18º dia. Os exames laboratoriais tempo de tromboplastina parcial ativada (TTPA), tempo de protrombina (TP) e contagem total de plaquetas foram determinados no dia anterior à indução da tromboflebite, durante o período de indução e mensurados diariamente, até o 12º dia pós-indução. Hemogramas foram realizados no período pré-indução, imediatamente após a cirurgia para a indução do trombo e no 3°, 7° e 10° dia após a tromboflebite induzida. Medidas diárias do comprimento dos trombos foram submetidas à comparação estatística pelo método de análise de variância. Venografias foram realizadas nos momentos pré-indução, imediatamente à indução, após a indução e a cada seis dias até o 18° dia. No grupo controle, os trombos cresceram até o 9° dia pós-indução, quando foi possível observar diminuição do comprimento dos trombos e aumento de fluxo lateral. No grupo tratado com heparina observou-se a interrupção no crescimento do trombo após ...(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: Jugular thrombophlebitis is a major vascular disease in horses which can lead to head edema, decreased athletic performance and even death. Heparin is used for the treatment of this disease in order to minimize the development of thrombus. The aim of this experiment was to evaluate clinical, laboratory, ultrasound and venographic changes caused by administration of heparin in the treatment of experimental thrombophlebitis in horses. Ten horses were subjected to induction of unilateral jugular thrombophlebitis. The animals were divided into control group and the treated group, composed of five animals each that received during 10 days the administration of heparin. Prior to the induction of thrombophlebitis and daily after the establishment of the same physical examinations and ultrasound were performed until the 18th day. The laboratory tests activated partial thromboplastin (APTT), prothrombin time (PT) and total count platelet were determined the day before the induction of thrombophlebitis, during the induction period and measured daily until the 12th day post-induction. Red blood cells counts were performed in the pre-induction, immediately after surgery for the induction of thrombus in the 3rd, 7th and 10th day after induced thrombophlebitis. Daily measurements of the length of the thrombi were subjected to statistical comparison with analysis of variance. Venographs were performed in the pre-induction, immediately before induction, after induction and every six days until the 18th day. In the control group, the thrombi to grow until the 9th day post-induction, when we observed a shortening of the thrombi and increased lateral flow. Conhecimentos pedagógicos como orientação para a "missão docente": a formação na Escola Normal de Niterói na Primeira República (1893-1915) / Pedagogical knowledge as a guide to "teaching mission": training in the Normal School of Niterói in the First Republic (1893-1915)

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / A dissertação analisa a política de formação docente oferecida pela Escola Normal de Niterói entre 1893 e 1915. O projeto de institucionalização da escolarização de professores representou momento de transformações significativas na profissão, então associada aos ideais de progresso e modernidade republicanos, com destaque para a circulação e apropriação de teorias pedagógicas. Buscou-se conhecer o lugar de tais teorias e dos saberes na formação institucional de professores, visando compreender, em que medida, as representações sobre a missão docente se fez presente nos discursos dos Presidentes de Estado no período. Com esse objetivo, analisamos as reformas de ensino e as frequentes inserções e retiradas de disciplinas escolares, em meio aos intensos debates na esfera governamental sobre o que ensinar ao povo e aos professores. Almejava-se um saber que fosse capaz de ampliar a visão do cidadão brasileiro, modificar seus hábitos e inseri-lo na modernidade, aspectos que condiziam com a construção de um espírito republicano. Para compreender o funcionamento e a contribuição dessa escola para a história da educação fluminense, analisamos a legislação educacional, os programas e as disciplinas, e também alguns exames de admissão e finais dos alunos. Foram utilizadas as mensagens dos presidentes do Estado (1892 a 1918), as leis que reformaram ou regulamentaram a instrução pública (1893, 1895, 1900, 1912 e 1915), em particular a Escola Normal de Niterói, os exames de admissão (1901 a 1908), os exames finais dos alunos (1897 a 1911) e um diário de Geografia (1915). Tais documentos foram analisados à luz de extensa historiografia sobre a formação docente e permitiram conhecer práticas escolares da instituição. As leis que modificaram os programas tentaram imprimir um caráter mais científico ao curso e muito se discutiu sobre a questão prática. Para tanto, as disciplinas tencionavam articular a teoria à experiência corroborando a aptidão do professor. A aprendizagem era verificada por meio de exames finais, que sucediam as sabatinas e as provas. Examinar era um dispositivo de poder que comparava e excluía e não apenas mensurava o conhecimento. Investigar a formação de professores nos levou a olhar as articulações históricas e as relações de forças que a constituíram. A pesquisa documental sugere a necessidade de ampliarmos a visão sobre a formação docente na Primeira República, tendo em vista que houve esforços em se organizar a instrução pública, sobretudo, no que concerne à Escola Normal de Niterói. / The research analyze the political aspect of teacher training by normal school at Niteroi city, between 1893 and 1915. The project of institutionalization and affirmation represented a time of significant in the profession. Therefore associate with republicans ideals and modernity, thus highlighting the movement and ownership of pedagogical theories. We attempted the place of educational theories and knowledge in the institutional teachers training. Understanding to what extent the representations about the teacher mission was present in the President of States speeches at the period. With that purpose we analyze educational reforms and the frequent insertion and withdrawals of school subjects. Under intense debate going on in the government, about what to teach to the people and teachers. Because the desire was acquaintance who was able to open mind of Brazilian citizens, change their habits and inserts it into modernity. Aspects that are consistent with the building of the Republican spirit. We analyze the education legislation, to understand how it worked and what contributed this school to the history of Fluminense education. Were also analyzed school programs and discipline, some admissions examinations e written test too. We used the president of the state messages (1894 to 1915), the laws of public education (1893, 1895, 1900, 1912 and 1915), especially the admission examination to the Normal Scholl at Niteroi city (1901-1908).The year-end exams of students (1897 to 1911) and a diary of geography (1915).These documents are reviewed under extensive historiography about the teacher training and allowed to know school practices of institution. The laws that changed the programs attempted to insert more scientific way and were questioned about the practical matter. Thus, the subjects had to articulate the theory and experience contributing the ability of the teacher. Learning is verified by final exams, which succeed the exams on Saturdays and regular tests Examine was a power device that compared and exclude, not just measure knowledge. Therefore investigate the teaches training show us the historical joints and power relationship that were part of it. The documental research shows a need to enlarge the overview about teachers training in the First Republic, have in mind that there were efforts to organize the public education, mainly regarding the Normal School of Niteroi city.

Proposição de uma medida alternativa de interpretação radiológica das curvaturas sagitais da coluna vertebral de crianças

Introdução: Os exames de Raios-X são utlizados para avaliação das curvaturas da coluna vertebral, porém, esses exames podem ser contra indicados em muitos casos, dessa forma a utilização da avaliação não invasiva é incentivada. Essa avaliação é baseada na palpação dos processos espinhosos que estão na superfície da pele, para isso, deve-se verificar se os resultados angulares oriundos dos processos espinhosos podem ser utilizados como forma de avaliação válida e reprodutível. Objetivos: (1) revisar na literatura os métodos invasivos de avaliação da coluna vertebral sagital; (2) desenvolver uma metodologia alternativa de medição das curvaturas sagitais da coluna vertebral, a partir dos processos espinhosos, baseada no cálculo da flecha sagital (f) e no ângulo (AF) das curvaturas originário da f; (3) verificar se essa metodologia é capaz de fornecer informações acuradas e precisas das curvaturas da coluna vertebral de crianças, a partir da avaliação da validade concorrente em relação ao padrão ouro, reprodutibilidade intra e interavaliador, sensibilidade e especificidade; e (4) identificar os limites de normalidade das curvaturas para a f e para o AF. Metodologia: Estudo 1 - A revisão sistemática da literatura foi realizada nas bases: Scopus, Science, Bireme e Pubmed. As palavras-chave utilizadas foram: "Validation Studies" OR “Reproducibility of Results” AND "Thoracic Vertebrae" OR "Lumbar Vertebrae" AND "Radiography”. Os principais desfechos extraídos foram os métodos utilizados para avaliar as curvaturas torácica e lombar da coluna vertebral no plano sagital através de exames de Raios-X. Estudo 2 - Para o estudo de validação, a amostra foi composta por exames de Raios-X da coluna vertebral de crianças, pertencentes a um banco de dados. Foram avaliadas, no plano sagital, as curvaturas torácica (n=90) e lombar (n=89). A análise estatística foi realizada no software SPSS versão 18.0, sendo o nível de significância de 0,05. Para a validade concorrente entre o AF e o AC foram utilizados: Teste de Correlação Produto-Momento de Pearson, Teste t independente, cálculo do erro RMS, Teste de Correlação de Morgan-Pitman e análise gráfica de Bland e Altman. Para a reprodutibilidade intra-avaliador das duas medidas do Av1 (1º dia x 2º dia) e para a reprodutibilidade interavaliador das medidas dos três avaliadores (Av1 x Av2 x Av3) foi utilizado o ICC, MAD, SEM e MDC. Resultados: Estudo 1 - Dos 1383 artigos previamente localizados, 22 artigos foram selecionados, em que, somente 2 apresentaram fraca evidência científica. Foram encontrados nove métodos diferentes. Com relação à reprodutibilidade dos métodos, os estudos mostraram resultados que variaram de moderada a excelente reprodutibilidade. Os artigos de validade mostraram grande correlação do método proposto com o padrão ouro; Estudo 2 - Tanto na região torácica (r= -0,763 com p<0,001), quanto na lombar (r= -0,686 com p<0,001), houve grande e significativa correlação entre o AF ajustado e o AC, o teste t de student não demonstrou diferença significativa entre os dois métodos, o baixo erro RMS determinou boa acurácia do método proposto, e a variância foi significativa na torácica, porém esse resultado não foi verificado na região lombar. A diferença média entre o AC e o AF ajustado (AC-AF) foi de 0°, tanto para a torácica e quanto para a lombar, e o desvio-padrão da média das diferenças na torácica foi de +12,4° e na lombar de +13,9°. AF ajustado e f apresentam boa especificidade e sensibilidade, porém alguns indivíduos foram classificados como falsos negativos na região torácica e alguns falsos positivos na região lombar. Os valores de ICC do AF ajustado foram semelhantes ou melhores do que os valores de ICC do padrão ouro, tanto intra quanto interavaliadores. Ainda, os valores de MAD, SEM e MDC do AF ajustado foram sempre menores do que os do AC,seja na coluna torácica ou na lombar. Os limites de normalidade na região torácica foram: de 0,97 cm à 3,83 cm para f e de 20° à 50° para o AF ajustado. Os limites de normalidade na região lombar foram: de 0,37cm à 3,81cm para a f e de 23,06° à 53,60° para o AF ajustado. Conclusão: O AF ajustado e f são válidos e reprodutíveis para avaliação da cifose torácica e da lordose lombar de crianças, apresentando fortes valores de correlação com o padrão ouro, bem como bons e excelentes valores de reprodutibilidade associados a baixos erros e variabilidade das medidas, indicando ser uma ferramenta precisa e confiável na avaliação da coluna vertebral. / Introduction: The X-ray examinations are utlizados to evaluate spinal curvatures, however, these tests may be contraindicated in many cases, so that the use of noninvasive evaluation is encouraged. This assessment is based on palpation of the spinous processes that are on the skin surface, for this we must verify that the angular results coming from the spinous processes can be used as an assessment tool valid and reproducible.Objectives: (1) review the literature about invasive methods for assessing sagittal spinal column; (2) developing an alternative method of measurement of the sagittal curvature of the spine, from the spinous processes, based on calculation of the sagittal fleche (f) and angle (AF) originating from the curvatures f; (3) verify that the methodology is able to provide accurate and precise information of the curvatures of the spine in children, based on the assessment of concurrent validity with respect to the gold standard, intra- and inter reliability, sensitivity and specificity; and (4) identify the boundaries of normality for f and AF. Methodology: Study 1 - A systematic literature review was performed on databases: Scopus, Science, Bireme and Pubmed. The key words used were: "Validation Studies" OR "Reproducibility of Results" AND "Thoracic Vertebrae" OR "Lumbar Vertebrae" AND "Radiography" The main outcome measures were extracted from the methods used to assess the thoracic and lumbar curvatures of the spine. in the sagittal plane by X-Rays Study 2 - For the validation study, the sample consisted of X-Ray of the spine of children belonging to a database. Toe thoracic curvature (n = 90) and lumbar (n = 89) Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software version 18.0, and the 0.05 significance level to the concurrent validity between the AF and the AC were used.: Correlation Test Product-Moment Pearson, independent t test, RMS error of calculation, Morgan-Pitman's correlation test and graphical analysis of Bland and Altman. For intra-rater reproducibility of the two Av1 measures (Day 1 x 2nd day ) and for inter-rater reproducibility of the measurements of the three evaluators (Av1 x x Av2 AV3) was used intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and the MAD calculation, SEM and MDC. Results: Study 1 - Of the 1383 articles previously located, 22 articles were selected, in which only two showed weak scientific evidence. They found nine different methods. Regarding the reproducibility of the methods, the studies showed results which ranged from moderate to excellent reproducibility. The validity of articles showed high correlation of the proposed method with the gold standard; Study 2 - Both in the thoracic region (r = -0.763 p <0.001) and lumbar (r =-0.686 p <0.001), there was a great and significant correlation between AF and set the AC, the Student t test did not show significant difference between the two methods, low RMS error determined good accuracy of the proposed method, and the variance was significant in the chest, but this effect was not detected in the lumbari region. The average difference between the AC and the set AF (AF-AC) was 0°, both the thoracic and the lumbar for, and the average standard deviation of the differences in the thoracic was +12,4° and lumbar from +13,9°. AF set have good specificity and sensitivity, but some individuals were classified as false negatives in the thoracic region and some false positives in the lumbar region. Conclusion: AF adjusted and f are valid and reliable for evaluating clhilren´s thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis, showing strong correlation values with the gold standard, as well as good and excellent reliability values associated with low errors and variability of the measures, indicating be a tool accurately and reliable the evaluation of the spine.

O questionário Oswestry tomou-se um dos principais instrumentos utilizados para avaliar os distúrbios da coluna vertebral. O objetivo desse estudo foi traduzir e adaptar a versão do questionário Oswestry para o português e avaliar sua validade e confiabilidade. A adaptação cultural foi realizada de acordo com a metodologia recomendada internacionalmente, usando as seguintes fases: tradução, retro-tradução, revisão por um comitê de especialistas e pré-teste. Primeiramente, o questionário foi traduzido para o português por dois tradutores bilíngües, de uma forma independente. Posteriormente, dois outros tradutores profissionais que possuíam como língua materna o inglês, fizeram a retro-tradução independentemente um do outro. Um comitê composto por seis especialistas revisou as versões obtidas e desenvolveram a versão final do instrumento. Essa versão foi pré-testada em 40 pacientes com lombalgia. A confiabilidade foi avaliada através da estabilidade (teste-resteste) e da consistência interna. A validade foi obtida comparando-se a pontuação do Oswestry com outros instrumentos de medida: o questionário Roland-Morris, o questionário SF-36 e uma escala numérica de dor. As propriedades psicométricas da versão traduzida foram avaliadas aplicando o questionário em 120 sujeitos com dor lombar. Os resultados mostraram uma boa validade e consistência interna (Alfa de Cronbach=0,87). No teste-resteste os resultados apontaram uma alta correlação intraclasse (r=0,99). O questionário Oswestry demonstrou possuir uma moderada correlação com a dor, usando-se uma escala numérica de dor (r=0,66). Uma correlação relativamente alta foi encontrada entre as pontuações do Oswestry e do Roland-Morris (r=0,81). Houve uma correlação significante (p<0,001) entre a pontuação do Oswestry e as oito dimensões do questionário SF-36. Os coeficientes de correlação mais altos foram com a capacidade funcional (r=0,83), com a dor (r=0,58) e com os aspectos físicos (r=0,53). Este estudo demonstrou que o processo usado para a adaptação do questionário Oswestry foi realizado com sucesso e que a versão adaptada possui excelentes propriedades psicométricas / Abstract: Reports in the literature have identified a need for internationally standardized and reliable measurements to analyse back pain. The Oswestry questionnaire has become one of the principal outcome measures used in the management of spinal disorders. The objective of this study was to translate and adapt a version of the Oswestry questionnaire into Brazilian Portuguese and evaluate its reliability. The cross-cultural adaptation was performed according to the internationally recommended methodology, using the following guidelines: translation, back-translation; revision by an expert committee and pretesting. First the questionnaire was independently translated into Portuguese by two bilingual translators. Second, two other professional translators whose mother tongue was English performed a back-translation independently from one another. A committee consisting of six specialists was brought together and developed a final version. This version was pretested on 40 subjects suffering from low back pain. Reliability was estimated through stability (test-retest) and homogeneity assessment. The validity was tested comparing scores of the Oswestry with the following measures: The Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire, the SF-36 questionnaire and a numerical pain scale. The psychometric properties of the translated version were evaluated by administering the questionnaire to 120 subjects with back pain. Results indicated good content validity and internal consistency (Cronbach alpha = 0.87). Intraclass correlation coefficient for test-retest reliability was r = 0.99. The Oswestry questionnaire showed moderate correlation with pain measure using a numerical pain scale (r = 0 66). Relatively high correlation was also found between the Oswestry and the Roland - Morris scores (r = 0.81). There was significant correlation (p< 0.001) between the Oswestry scores and the eight scales of the SF - 36 questionnaire. The highest correlation coefficients were for physical functioning (r = 0,83); bodily pain (r = 0,58) and role physical (r = 0,53). De modo mais especÃfico analisa-se a partir das entrevistas com os presidentes e vice-presidente da ComissÃo Coordenadora do Vestibular (CCV) as explicaÃÃes para as diversas modificaÃÃes implantadas por cada um ao seu tempo e ao seu modo. AtravÃs da fala dos professores elaboradores de provas de Biologia revela-se o impacto causado pelas provas do vestibular e sua repercussÃo nos conteÃdos abordados no Ensino MÃdio.Esta pesquisa, confirma a historicidade do processo de mudanÃas fazendo uso dos documentos do Conselho de Ensino, Pesquisa e ExtensÃo (CEPE) e dos editais de convocaÃÃo dos vestibulares compreendidos entre 1978 e 2007. A pesquisa de abordagem qualitativa adota como instrumento de levantamento de dados a entrevista semi-estruturada e anÃlise de documentos concentrando-se especialmente: nas falas dos presidentes e vice-presidentes da CCV relacionadas com as mudanÃas ocorridas nos vestibulares da UFC no perÃodo de 1978 a 2007; nas contribuiÃÃes dos professores elaboradores de provas de Biologia do vestibular da UFC; na anÃlise documental das provas de Biologia do vestibular da UFC; e na apreciaÃÃo dos documentos oficiais. Destaca-se no texto a capacidade de adaptaÃÃo das escolas particulares Ãs inovaÃÃes propostas pela CCV, e se notifica a pouca visibilidade de iniciativas tomadas nesse sentido pela escola pÃblica. Chega-se à conclusÃo que o sistema de acesso à universidade tem uma influÃncia inegÃvel no Ensino MÃdio, tanto no conteÃdo como no seu enfoque epistemolÃgico; entretanto essa ascendÃncia pode ser positiva desde que haja convergÃncia entre o sistema de acesso ao Ensino Superior e os objetivos do prÃprio Ensino MÃdio. Palavras-Chaves: Vestibular; MudanÃas; Ensino MÃdio. / This study intends to investigate changes brought about in the College Entrance Examinations (Vestibular) of the Universidade Federal do Cearà (UFC) in the last 26 years and its effects in the Brazilian Secondary Education. Specifically, the explanations for several modifications established - each at a different time and manner - are analyzed based on interviews with presidents and vice-presidents of the Examinationâs Coordination Committee (CCV). Through the speech of the teachers responsible for the elaboration of the Biology tests, the impact of the vestibular exams are revealed as well as the effects in the subjects dealt with in Secondary School. This investigation confirms the historicity of the change process by utilizing documents from the Education, Research and Community Service Council (CEPE) and the Call for Exams Publications from 1978 to 2007. This qualitative research chose a semi-structured interview and document analysis as tools for data survey, focusing especially on the sayings of the presidents and vice-presidents of the CCV related to the changes that took place in UFCâs Vestibular examinations from 1978 to 2007; the sayings of teachers who developed the Biology tests in he UFC Vestibular; as well as on documental analysis of these Biology tests and official documents. In the text, the ability of private schools to adapt to the innovations proposed by the CCV is highlighted and the lack of visibility of these actions by public schools is noticed. It is concluded that the access system to the university has an indisputable influence in Secondary School, both in content and in its epistemological approach, however this influence can only be positive if there is a convergence between the access system to Higher Education and the objectives in Secondary School itself. It is shown that UFC needs to review its selection criteria, resize the contents required and invert the way it contributes with the evaluation process, centralizing its concerns in the construction of an educational proposal that may shape individuals capable of thinking, proposing and making changes that can transform the course of history. .

Learner mathematical errors in introductory differential calculus tasks : a study of misconceptions in the senior school certificate examinations

D.Phil. / The research problematised the learning of mathematics in South African high schools in a Pedagogical Content Knowledge context. The researcher established that while at best, teachers may command mathematics content knowledge, or pedagogic knowledge, that command proves insufficient in leveraging the learning of mathematics and differentiation. Teachers' awareness of their learners' errors and misconceptions on a mathematics topic is critical in developing appropriate pedagogical content knowledge. The researcher argues that the study of learner errors in mathematics affords educators critical knowledge of the learners' Zones of Proximal Development. The space where learners experience misconceptions as they attempt to assign meaning to new mathematical ideas to which they may or may not have obtained semiotic mediation. In their Zones of Proximal Development learners may harbour concept images that are incompetition with established mathematical knowledge.Educators need to study and understand those concept images (amateur or alternative conceptions), and how learners come to have them, if they are to help learners learn mathematics better. Besides the socio-cultural v1ew, the study presumed that the misconceptions formed by learners in mathematicsmay also beexplained within a constructivist perspective of learning. The constructivist perspective of learning assumes that learners interpret new knowledge on the basis of the knowledge they already have. However, some of the knowledge that learners construct though meaningful to them may be full of misconceptions. This may occur through overgeneralisation of prior knowledge to new situations. The researcher presumed that the ideas that learners have of particular mathematical concepts were concept images they construct. Though some of the concept images may be deficient or defective from a mathematics expert's point of view, they are still used by the learners to learn new mathematics concepts and to solve mathematics problems. The lack of success in mathematics that results in the application of erratic concept images ultimately leads to unsuccessful learning of mathematics with the danger of snowballing if there are no practicable interventions. Differentiation is a new topic in the South African mathematics curriculum and most teachers and learners have registered problems in teaching and learning it. Hence it was imperative to do research on this topic from an angle of learner errors on that topic. The significance of the study is that this research isolated the differentiation learner errors and misconceptions that teachers can focus on for the improvement of learning and achievement in the topic of introductory differentiation. The research focused on the nature of errors and misconceptions learners have on introductory differentiation as exhibited in their 2008 examination scripts. It sought to identify, categorise (form a database) and discuss the errors and their conceptual links. A typology of errors and misconceptions in introductory calculus was constructed. The study mainly used qualitative methods to collect and analyse data. Content analysis techniques were used to analyse the data on the basis of a conceptual framework of mathematics and calculus errors obtained from literature. One thousand Grade 12, Mathematics Paper 1 examination scripts from learners of both sexes emanating from diverse social backgrounds provided data for the study. The unit of analysis was students' errors in written responses to differentiation examination items.

An investigation into the impact of the use of an integrated learning system on mathematics standard grade paper 2 marks of grade 12 learners of one high school in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan area

The aim of this study was an exploration of the relationship between the use of an Integrated Learning System (ILS), entitled Master Maths, as a supplement to traditional mathematics instruction, and mathematics achievement as measured by the Paper 2 marks of the National Mathematics Examinations for standard grade learners in grade 12. The use of technology in education has increased over the past decade. One way of integrating technology into instructional programmes has been through the use of Integrated Learning Systems (ILSs). The review of the literature traces the history of computer-assisted instruction as conducted on ILSs. The review of recent research studies focuses on the impact of ILSs on learner achievement in mathematics internationally and in the South African context. This study used quantitative and qualitative methods to research the impact of the Master Maths programme on mathematics achievement. Twenty-six learners of the 133 standard grade learners from one high school in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth were selected for each of the experimental and control groups. The experimental group worked on the Master Maths programme for twelve sessions of three hours each. The results of the quantitative analysis show that the intervention did not make a significant difference to the experimental group. The Master Maths programme led to only a 0.56% increase in the marks of the experimental group. The qualitative analysis drew a comparison between the modules of the Master Maths programme and the relevant examination questions in terms of content covered and cognitive levels. The researcher used Bloom’s Cognitive Taxonomy to evaluate the cognitive levels. The data show that it was easier for the learners to obtain higher marks in the module tests than in the examination questions. The data indicate that the module tests were easier than the examination questions in that the cognitive levels of the module tests were lower. The data confirm that there is a gap between the acquisition and evaluation of core skills tested by the modules used in the intervention and the wider knowledge and skills tested in the examination.

An Exploratory Study of Test Anxiety As It Relates To The National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination

Test anxiety involves a variety of physiological, cognitive, and emotional components. Those suffering from high test anxiety seem to perform poorly on examinations because test anxiety can contribute to information processing challenges both while studying for tests and during evaluative situations. Current research indicates that when a training program is applied that incorporates cognitive behavioral techniques as well as study skills training, highly test anxious individuals can overcome information processing challenges, increase their academic performance, and earn higher scores on tests. In this study, a training program (Counseling Exam Test Anxiety Intervention) combining cognitive behavioral techniques and study skills training was applied to highly test anxious counselors and counselors in training preparing to retake the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) after failing it at least once. This study makes the first known attempt to examine test anxiety specifically associated with the NCMHCE. The research questions guiding this study related to exploring the nature of test anxiety, any changes that occurred during administration of the Counseling Exam Test Anxiety Intervention (CETAI), and whether or not the CETAI was effective in terms of decreasing test anxiety and increasing academic performance. The findings revealed that when participants in this study applied the skills they learned from the CETAI, they improved their scores on practice tests, experienced an increase in confidence, and the majority of them successfully passed the NCMHCE when they retook it.

Assessment of technical competence of candidates within a clinical pathology discipline

Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the Master of Health Sciences: Medical Laboratory Science Degree, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2017. / Background Medical laboratories play a crucial role in patient care and require a competent skilled workforce to deliver this essential service. The current process of Medical Technologist training is a summative assessment consisting of two written 3 hour papers that correlates theoretical knowledge acquired at a tertiary level with the practical internship. Currently there is no assessment of technical competence of Intern Medical Technologists (candidates) by the HPCSA. Aim: This study aims to determine how technical competence was assessed for Intern Medical Technologists who are eligible to write the National Board Examination in the Clinical Pathology discipline. Methods: A quantitative design was used for assessing the technical competence of the candidates that were eligible to write the National Board Examination by using an adapted SANAS witnessing tool across ten Clinical Pathology test procedures by direct observation as well as to determine how technical competence is assessed in HPCSA registered training laboratories using a survey administered to Laboratory managers and trainers. The data was collected and analysed using the statistical software SPSS version 24.0. Results Some candidates that were directly observed in each of the Clinical Pathology test procedures were deemed not yet competent in compliance and adherence to SOP’s, acceptability of results, internal quality control procedures and the acceptability of the outcome and availability of signed training and competency records on the direct observation checklist. These results of the assessment of technical competence were compared to the results of the National Board examination that candidates wrote and there was no correlation between the two except for the Microbiology sub-discipline and the general section. Results of operations of competency assessment in 9 HPCSA registered Training Laboratories revealed that 100% of respondents have a technical competence laboratory policy, 90% identified the Laboratory Manager as having responsibility for ensuring assessment of staff competency, 100% stated that frequency of competency testing was upon initial employment and once in two years thereafter, 90% had clear criteria to define competency assessment and 100% indicated that the remedial process used in their laboratories was documented corrective action which included re-training and re-assessment. Conclusion: From this study it can be concluded that assessment of technical competency for Intern Medical Technologists in the Clinical Pathology could augment current assessment systems of Intern Medical Technologists for conferment of professional designation and a policy review is recommended. / M
