How have youth experienced trying to get off the street : what has helped and hindered

Brown, Tracy L. 05 1900 (has links)
The experience of how youth get off the street is scarcely documented. The present study explored what helped and hindered youth in their experience as they tried to get off the street and addressed the following research question: “How have youth experienced trying to get off the street: what has helped and hindered?” Twenty youth, aged 19-24 years of age, living in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada who have spent time living on the street were interviewed using Flanagan’s (1954) Critical Incident Technique. The qualitative analysis of the interviews identified 259 critical incidents, forming nine helping categories and six hindering categories when youth tried to leave the streets. The nine helping categories included: (1) Taking Responsibility, (2) Engaging in Constructive Activities, (3) Friends and Family Support, (4) Changing Drug and Alcohol Use, (5) Support from Professional Organizations, (6) Disillusionment of Street Life, (7) Dreams and Hope for a Different Future, (8) Income Assistance and (9) Leaving Negative Influences Behind. The six hindering categories were: (1) Drugs and Alcohol, (2) Emotional Struggles, (3) Lack of Support, (4) Enjoyment of Homelessness, (5) Limited Formal Education, Life Skills and Employment and (6) Income Assistance Difficulties. The results from this study are discussed in relation to implications for theory, practice and future research. / Education, Faculty of / Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS), Department of / Graduate

The Treatment Effect of the City Connects Intervention on Exiting Limited English Proficiency Status

Akbayin, Bercem January 2017 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Henry I. Braun / The City Connects intervention is motivated by the belief that out-of-school factors act as barriers to student thriving in cognitive and non-cognitive domains. It seeks to address these barriers first by identifying each student’s strengths and needs and then by providing a tailored set of prevention, intervention, and enrichment programs. Underlying the program is the assumption that provision of high-quality resources and individualized services will enable children to be cognitively, socio-emotionally, and physically prepared to thrive in school. This study’s purpose was to estimate the effects of the City Connects intervention on English learners’ (EL) likelihood of exiting Limited English Proficiency (LEP) status. ELs comprise a student subpopulation most at-risk to fail academically, and exposure to the program was hypothesized to improve their likelihood of exiting LEP status earlier than otherwise. A series of one- and two-level discrete-time event history analyses were conducted on the main analytic sample as well as two sub-samples. As participation in City Connects is at the school-level, school-level matching was used for sub-samples 1 and 2, and propensity score weights were applied at the student-level for all three samples. Additionally, hazard probabilities, survival probabilities, cumulative hazard rates, and median lifetimes were estimated. Lastly, a sensitivity analysis was conducted to examine whether effects were robust to unobserved selection bias. The results indicated that ELs participating in the City Connects intervention were significantly more likely to exit LEP status earlier than their peers in comparison schools. The median time in LEP status in City Connects schools was shorter and translated into a gain of at least one half of a year in grade in mainstream classes. Also, all the fitted models indicated that approximately 10 percent more City Connects students exited LEP status by the end of fifth grade than comparison students. Findings highlight the impact of the City Connects intervention, as ELs entering mainstream classes earlier could translate into important academic and non-academic gains, such as improved academic achievement and increased self-confidence. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2017. / Submitted to: Boston College. Braucht der Wohnbereich einen Ausgang? / Veränderung des Verhaltens und Wohlbefindens demenzerkrankter Bewohner in Abhängigkeit von der Sichtbarkeit der Ausgangstür

Marquardt, Gesine, Glasow, Nadine 17 November 2006 (has links) (PDF)

Prostitution : En litteraturstudie om kvinnors egna berättelser gällande processen in och ut ur prostitution. / : Prostitution- A literature study of women’s own stories regarding the process in and out of prostitution.

Hjort, Caroline, Lindblad Wojcik, Malin January 2019 (has links)
The aim of the study was to learn more about women in prostitution, mainly about the process in and out of prostitution. Four books containing biographical material were read, three were written by the authors themselves and the fourth by two authors who interviewed female prostitutes. The empirical study was analyzed with thematic analysis and gender and stigma was used as theoretical perspectives and interpretation frames. The results showed that factors such as economics, traumatic events and self-hatred were the main reasons for entering prostitution, and that exiting prostitution was dependent on factors such as time, relationships and the treatment of society. The conclusion is that it is not a particular personality type that enters prostitution but it being due to several collaborative circumstances, therefore preventive efforts are important. It is also easier to quit with the help of someone, such as professional helpers.

A Study of Select Factors Regarding the Preparedness of Youth Exiting the Foster Care System

Herndon-Hale, Vickey 31 July 2019 (has links)
In communities across the United States, thousands of young people leave foster care without the support of family or community. At age 18, now legally adults, young people in foster care face potentially dramatic life changes as they are terminated from foster care services because they have reached the age of ineligibility, commonly referred to as “aging out.” Although research has increased an understanding of the experiences of youth exiting the foster care system, studies focusing on their experiences while transitioning out of the foster care system and into adulthood have been largely absent in the literature. This qualitative study is an effort to address this gap in the research. Using a modified grounded theory approach, this study explores the experiences of fifteen young adults between the ages of 18 and 24, as they transition to independence after exiting the foster care system. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 15 young adults ages 18-24, who have aged out of the foster care system or are receiving extended youth services. Results from this study support previous findings that youth exiting the foster care system face challenges transitioning to adulthood, particularly in their efforts to learn the skills needed to function independently, gain the education and/or vocational training to gain skillful employment, and have the social and emotional support needed to help facilitate their transition. The study results indicate that 87% of the participants expressed having a caring, supportive adult in their life who has assisted them. 66% of the study participants were enrolled in post-secondary institutions and expressed the importance of placement stability to maintain school credits and supportive relationships with their teachers. Specific areas of challenge for the youth preparing to transition to independence focused on money management and daily living skills. Implications for further research, professional practice, and policy development include states incorporating tools to assess readiness for independence, addressing the barriers to education as identified in the study and exploring the impact of family involvement/support for youth exiting the foster care system.

“Det är väl bara att gå därifrån?” : - en kvalitativ studie om uppbrott ur prostitution. / “Why can you not just walk away?” : - a qualitative research about exiting prostitution.

Ekmen, Elise, Högnäs, Mirjam January 2016 (has links)
Former studies show that the break-up from prostitution can be seen as a process with several stages which the person has to go through and that there are several factors which can affect the break-up. The aim of this study is to create an understanding for and illustrate how a break-up from prostitution can look like. We have interviewed three ex-prostitutes about their own break-up and three social workers who work with helping individuals to exit prostitution. We have analyzed the material through the theory of exit process by Helen Fuch Ebaugh (1988) and through former studies. All the ex-prostitutes and the social workers in our study described the break-up from prostitution as a process. All our respondents agreed on that there are several different factors affecting a break-up from prostitution, whereof close relationships and the own motivation to make a change are the most significant ones. Formal support from professionals is also considered having an impact on the exit process as well as during the period after the break-up. In summary, the break-up process from prostitution is very complex, can be emotionally exhausting and may vary to a great extent between individuals.
