A bittersweet existence: the lived experiences of four young women with diabetes mellitus

This study examined the lived experience of diabetes as told by four young women with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Assuming a qualitative approach, I asked participants to describe their medical, academic, social, and psychological experiences during a single, guided open-ended interview. Analysis of the data revealed the subjective and unique nature of the illness experience, and the variety of ways in which diabetes had influenced Abbey’s, Olivia’s, Hannah’s, and Melinda’s life choices and existence. Despite differing in the ways in which they experienced their illness, there were some similarities that existed across cases. These women all faced a variety of challenges throughout their lives, ranging from difficulties with the treatment regimen, with the lack of diabetes awareness in the school setting, and in coming to terms with their illness. Applying the Shifting Perspectives Model of Illness (Paterson, 2001) to the stories told by these four women provided an in-depth view of how these four individuals with diabetes made meaning of their experiences. Because these women viewed their lives primarily from a wellness in the foreground perspective, they were able to identify the many positive ways in which diabetes had transformed their lives. This study contributes to the understanding of the lived experience of diabetes in the literature, and is one of the few studies to explore the diabetes experience using a theoretical framework. Syfte: Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur kundens upplevelse formas i kontexten online product community, utifrån ett multidimensionellt perspektiv på kundupplevelsen.   Metod: Med bakgrund mot studiens syfte var det passande att använda en kvalitativ metod. Detta fenomen studerades genom en flerfallsstudie som den övergripande undersökningsdesignen.  Semi-strukturerade intervjuer har genomförts med respondenter från tre olika online product communities. Materialet har sedan analyserat genom en abduktiv analysmetod som är inspirerad av grounded theory.   Resultat & slutsats: Studien visar att kundupplevelsen för medlemmar i online product communities främst formas av den pragmatiska dimensionen, innehåll och funktionalitet är därmed centralt. Resultatet tyder även på att det finns två grupper av användare i dessa communities. Den ena gruppen är mer passiv och pragmatiskt inriktad medan den andra är mer aktiv och nöjesinriktad.   Förslag till vidare forskning: Då denna studie bygger på intervjuer med medlemmar i online product communities som både kan ses som aktiva och passiva medlemmar kan det vara av intresse att i framtiden studera hur de mest aktiva medlemmar upplever att delta i denna kontext, då det är denna kärna som genererar det största innehållet.   Uppsatsens bidrag: Denna studie sammanför den tidigare forskningen om kundupplevelse och senare forskning om kundupplevelse i online communities för att skapa en förklarande modell. Modellen beskriver vilka dimension som formar kundupplevelsen i denna kontext och testas sedan i tre case. Studien bidrar till en ökad förståelse för skillnaden mellan pragmatiska och mer nöjesinriktade användare.   Nyckelord: Customer experience, experiental marketing, online product communities. / Purpose of Study: The aim of this study is to examine how the customer experience is shaped in the context online product community, based on a multi-dimensional perspective on customer experience.   Method: Due to the purpose of the study qualitative methods were chosen. This phenomenon was studied by a multi-case study as the overall study design. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with respondents from three different online product communities. The material was then analyzed by an abductive method of analysis which is inspired by grounded theory.   Results & conclusion: The study shows that the customer experience for members of online product communities primarily is shaped by the pragmatic dimension, content and functionality is thus essential. The results also suggest that there are two groups of users in these communities. One of the groups is more passive and pragmatic, while the other one is more active and entertainment-oriented.   Suggestions for further research: Since this study is based on interviews with members of online product communities which can be seen as active and passive members it may be of interest in future research to study the most active members experiences in this context, because it is this core group that generates the largest content.   Contribution of the thesis: This study brings together previous research on customer experience and recent research on customer experience in online communities to create an explanatory model. The model describes the dimensions that shape the customer experience in this context and is then tested in three cases. From vine to wine: an exploration into the relationship between landscape architecture and viticulture

Vineyards are perhaps one of the most attractive and recognizable productive landscapes, comprising 12 000 hectares of Canada’s 998 467 000 hectares of total land area. These unique and beautiful landscapes are characterized by their distinctive site planning, unique micro-climates and an understanding of the terroir of the land. However, the profession of landscape architecture remains tenuously connected to viticulture (the cultivation of grapes) and vineyard designs. Very few landscape architects are involved with the design of vineyards and little to no literature has been written on the interface between these two professions. The intent of this practicum is to articulate and demonstrate the important contribution that landscape architecture can make to viticulture by examining aesthetic values that link site and terroir to create an overall vineyard experience. Through a case study analysis of winery and vineyard sites, this practicum examines how landscape architecture can contribute to viticulture and enhance not only the experience of being in a vineyard setting but also the wine tourism industry. The result is a design for a winery and vineyard site in the Okanagan Valley that employs strategies for improving tourism by enhancing visitor experience.

Recycled memories : can flashbacks be triggered through experience design?

This paper examines the phenomenon flashbacks, often named the Proust phenomenon, through the lens of experience design. The research question is Can flashbacks be triggered through experience design? It would then be possible to call flashbacks memories recycled memories. To answer the question former studies were researched, mainly from the standpoint of cognitive psychology. The thesis discusses how different senses produce flashbacks and how they can be used as triggers. The difference between the connection of sight, sound, touch, taste and smell to experiences and flashbacks are examined, especially the extraordinary connection between flashbacks and the olfactory sense. This topic can not be completed without looking into Marcel Proust‘s texts in À la recherche du temps perdu and his poetic description on how flashbacks work. Through the lens of Proust, flashbacks are discussed as narratives and the thesis looks into the significance of the memories as a building block for our sense of ourselves. Several Icelandic storytellers are interviewed about their memories. Through their interviews the storytelling aspect of sharing memories becomes prominent, leading to a discussion on the social aspect of memory sharing. The thesis ends with a study in triggering flashbacks through an experience. An exhibition presenting memories of others through sensory stimuli is used to see the effects of memory sharing through appealing to our senses.

Including difference: ESL female teachers in postsecondary education

The purpose of this narrative study is to understand the experience of ESL female teachers in postsecondary education. The ESL female teachers will be defined as female teachers who speak English as a second language. The study asks the following research questions: What are the lived experiences of ESL female teachers in postsecondary education? How do ESL female teachers in postsecondary education narrate their experiences and negotiate their teacher identities? How can the above understanding contribute to the inclusion of ESL female teachers in an increasingly diversified educational landscape? The researcher adopts an intersectional stance and a poststructuralist understanding of subjectivity and positioning to study identity. Life story interviews and narrative inquiry are utilized as methodology to collect stories from ESL female teachers teaching in postsecondary education and to retell the same so as to achieve an informed understanding of the phenomenon under study. The study reveals that the participants have experienced an intersection of multiple identities which collectively function to marginalize them under the discourse of difference as deficit. Apart from efforts to adapt to the dominant discourse, the participants have also acted to utilize their multiple identities so as to resist negative positioning. The participants’ experiences have posed questions concerning what institutional and systemic changes are needed in order to help their inclusion in postsecondary education. / Graduate / fuhong2015@gmail.com

Bakgrund: Sexualitet är en del av att vara människa, i och med att många sjukdomstillstånd direkt eller indirekt påverkar sexualitet är detta ett ämne vårdpersonal inte kan bortse ifrån. Trots att sjuksköterskor anser att samtala om sexualitet hör till deras arbetsuppgifter så saknar många patienter information och dialog om detta ämne. För att kunna säga att man bedriver en holistisk omvårdnad krävs det att sjuksköterskor aktivt tar sig an ämnet. Syfte: Syftet med denna studie var att beskriva sjuksköterskor upplevelse av att samtala om sexualitet med patienten. Metod: Tio kvalitativa empiriska studier har sammanställts och analyserats i en litteraturstudie. Artikelsökningarna genomfördes i databaserna PubMed, CINAHL och PsychInfo. Resultat: Sjuksköterskors uppfattning av att samtala om ämnet sexualitet sammanfattas i fyra kategorier som handlar om Upplevelse av ansvar, Prioritet, En konservativ syn och Kunskapsbrist. Kunskapsbristen sjuksköterskor upplever leder till passivitet och i många fall ett frånskyllande av ansvar. Patientens sexualitet prioriteras inte och samhällets konservativa syn på sexualitet påverkar kommunaktionen mellan sjuksköterska och patient negativt. Slutsats: Litteraturstudiens resultat visar att mer kunskap för sjuksköterskor är nödvändigt för att ge dem de verktyg som krävs i deras praktiska arbete. För att ge den omvårdnad dessa patienten behöver krävs en personcentrerad holistisk omvårdnad där inga aspekter av att vara människa utesluts. Nyckelord: Omvårdnad, Sexualitet, Upplevelse / Background: Sexuality is a part of being human, due to that many diseases directly or in directly affect ones sexuality, it’s an important topic that healthcare professionals can’t avoid.Although nurses believe that talking about sexuality belongs to their tasks, many patients don’t get the information and conversation they need about the subject.  To be able to say that one is practising holistic care, nurses have to adress the topic; sexuality. Aim: The aim of this studie was to describe nurses’ experience of talking about sexuality with their patients. Method: Ten qualitative empirical studies have been complied and analyzed in a literature review. The search for articles were conducted in PubMed, CINAHL and PsychInfo. Result: Nurses experience of talking about sexuality were summarized in four categories: Responsibility, Priority, A conservative view and Lack of knowledge. The lack of knowledge that nurses experience leads to passivity and in many cases result in that nurses push aside the responsibility. Patients sexuality is not a priority, and society’s conservative views on sex has a negative effect on the communication between nurses and their patients. Conclusions: The result of the literature review show that nurses need more knowledge on how to get the tools that they need to be able to provide information and help to their patients when it comes to Sexual Health. An individualistic holistic nursing is needed to be able to provide patients with a care that includes all aspescts of being human. Keywords: Experience, Nursing, Sexuality
