War as Aesthetic: The Philosophy of Carl von Clausewitz as the Embodiment of John Dewey's Concept of Experience

De Berg, Oak Herbert 2011 August 1900 (has links)
This dissertation confirms war as the zenith of aesthetic experience and demonstrates the pragmatic nature of war through explication of John Dewey’s aesthetic philosophy. Likewise, the coherency of Carl von Clausewitz’s philosophy parallels Dewey as it too leads to complete development, or flourishing, of the individual in a complex, ever-changing world. Von Clausewitz’s sets his philosophy in the context of war, but his philosophy transcends that milieu. The timelessness of the General’s philosophical concepts guarantees the appropriateness of these concepts in today’s inconstant world. To exemplify this point, this paper applied von Clausewitz’s concepts to the range of contemporary wars in which the demands on modern warriors are often perceived as qualitatively different from demands placed on individuals in the armies of the early 1800s. This perception is shown to lack credibility and, even though the methods and technologies of war are in continuous flux while the basic nature of war remains unchanged, the germane nature of the General’s philosophy to contemporary times remains unsullied and follows logically. Rather than simply asserting that the concepts of these two philosophers are apropos in the contemporary context of war, this dissertation concludes by contending that modern military thinkers employ the Clausewitzian philosophy, as synthesized by John Boyd, as a basis for fighting in today’s contemporary environment. As an exemplar, the current doctrine of the United States Marine Corps is offered as a template of the philosophy of von Clausewitz and, by extension, Dewey. Modern war, once established as an archetype of the Deweyan philosophy, can be claimed as the primary illustration of the aesthetic.

A Year in the Works: A Record of Engineering and Management Experience at Freese and Nichols, Inc.

Hann, Tyson Orion 2011 December 1900 (has links)
This manuscript presents the author's experience as a fulltime graduate engineer at Freese and Nichols, Inc. (FNI), a professional engineering an servicebased consulting firm, as a Record of Study (ROS) for the Doctor of Engineering (DE) degree at Texas A&M University. Through the course of the internship, the author was to familiarize himself with FNI organizational procedures and fulfill established internship objectives concerning technical, managerial, strategic, and societal achievement. In meeting the above requirements, the author describes the history and key aspects of the FNI business, discusses established managerial procedures at FNI, presents direct work experience on projects during the DE internship period, and presents outcomes towards the internship objectives. FNI has a storied history, and the FNI business model centers around its ability to sell its employees time on projects; it requires technical expertise and client relationships that facilitate selection for the work. FNI's organizational structure and managerial procedures are designed to emphasize the company's differentiated strategy towards high quality customer service. The author worked on several projects throughout the internship; however, the primary role was via the Highlands Bond Program, which involved the design of multiple water resources structures. Through the awareness of the FNI business concept and these projects, the key outcomes of the DE internship were noted, as numbered below. 1) The author fulfilled all internship objectives. 2) As a function of the projects, technical/engineering skills were applied and learned, and a greater appreciation for the interconnectedness of technical disciplines was developed. 3) The author concluded that the Assistant Project Manager (APM) role, of which the author served while on the internship, offers significant managerial and strategic benefits to FNI, and that the role can facilitate faster individual growth and greater project ownership. 4) Strategically, all projects are important in a business, even if they are less technically advanced. 5) Recommendations that could potentially improve the engineering programs at Texas A&M include a) providing greater emphasis on developing the soft skills of engineering, and b) potentially adding dam management/design and pipeline/pump station design to the water resources portions of the Texas A&M Curriculum. 6) The author noted that FNI is a well-managed company, and that his observations during the DE internship reinforced this statement.

Chang, Wen-ching 25 July 2007 (has links)
The main purpose of this study was to explore the situation of experiential theories merging into the teaching of Integrative Activities Learning Area in elementary schools. Samples were taken from two classes of fourth graders at a primary school in Kaohsiung. One class of the subjects was used as the experimental group and the other class was used as the control group. Experiential theories were emerged into the Integrative Activities Learning Area teaching of the experimental group, while the control group received the traditional lecture. The courses lasted six weeks. After completion of the course, students from both groups filled up the Integrative Activities Learning Area attitude questionnaires. The research also adopted qualitative research method, which includes observation, interview, questionnaire, and document analysis. As a result, the following conclusions were obtained: 1. Students were used to thinking in one way about discussion chart¡FThey confused suspense with surprise about assessment chart¡FThey could reflect over reflection chart . 2. Students loved visiting and performance, because of fun, inter- action and challenge. 3. Discussion chart and assessment chart could be applied to formative assessment¡FReflection chart could be applied to summative assessment. 4. Understanding the member enhanced learning performance. 5. Teachers must be flexible when they merge experiential theories into Integrative Activities Learning Area teaching. 6. When students had good attitude towards group cooperation, their learning performances were fine. 7. Merging experiential theories into Integrative Activities Learning Area teaching could enhance students¡¦ attitude toward Integrative Activities Learning Area.

Cognitive ability, personality, and experience: evidence for differential impact on job performance factors

Slaughter, Andrew Joseph 29 August 2005 (has links)
Using a sample of 443 participants employed in a variety of jobs, the interactions between cognitive ability, conscientiousness, agreeableness, task experience, and task and contextual performance were explored. Results suggest that task experience is a better predictor of task performance than contextual performance; that agreeableness is associated with greater levels of contextual performance, but only for those lower in cognitive ability; and that conscientiousness moderates the interaction between cognitive ability and task experience on task performance. Specifically, it was found that for higher levels of conscientiousness, task performance converged for those of different cognitive abilities when task experience was high; likewise, for lower levels of conscientiousness, task performance diverged for those of different cognitive abilities when task experience was high. The impact and limitations of these results are discussed.

The numbers of people with dementia in Sweden are estimates at 150 000. Destination Branding and Demand : Formulating Expectations Through Perceptions

Liu, Chen-Yu, Virta, Jessica January 2010 (has links)
<p>This paper looks at the perceptions of people within and outside of Jönköping, regard-ing the main attractions/attributes within the Jönköping region and how they are being branded by the municipality. A model was formed to explain how consumer expecta-tions affect demand, and based on that a survey was handed out to find out consumers travelling habits, general perceptions about Jönköping and its branding. The results show that promotion has not been as successful as hoped and that Jönköping is still seen as a religious city among the respondents. A Las Vegas Entertainment Concept was formed to find out whether people would be willing to visit Jönköping more often if something „new‟ was presented. In conclusion, for consumers to visit more often new experiences have to be provided. It is all about the way Jönköping city is marketed in the future and what it will be able to offer to the different consumer segments visiting.</p>
