Att förlora en person till följd av suicid : En litteraturöversikt ur de närståendes perspektiv / Loosing someone as a result of suicide : A literature review of the kindred's perspective

Mattila, Line, Jacobsson, Sofia January 2014 (has links)
Background: Each year, over one million people around the world die as a result of suicide. About 1500 of those are in Sweden. In each case an estimated six kindred’s are to be affected. These people are in great need of support. Despite this, research shows that nurses experience difficulties to support the suicide survivors. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe kindred’s experiences after the loss of someone close as a result of suicide. Method: In order to capture the kindred’s experience of losing someone close as a result of suicide, a literature-based study were chosen, where nine scientific qualitative articles were analyzed. Results: The results are presented in four different themes, and eight subthemes, which all highlights kindred’s experience of losing someone close as a result of suicide. The themes where to feel an overwhelming grief; to feel judged by others and themselves; to feel the need of support; that life changes. Conclusion: Being related to someone who has died as a result of suicide causes great suffering and a changed life-world. The following study shows that most suicide survivors don’t get the support they need after the suicide. A better understanding of the suicide survivor’s experiences may lead to improved care and support. To prevent the suffering and to support the kindred’s health process this study shows that a caring science way of caring is required. Thus it applies to each nurse to be open and responsive to each individual’s life-world and its ambiguity

From vine to wine: an exploration into the relationship between landscape architecture and viticulture

Bissky, Allyson 11 January 2012 (has links)
Vineyards are perhaps one of the most attractive and recognizable productive landscapes, comprising 12 000 hectares of Canada’s 998 467 000 hectares of total land area. These unique and beautiful landscapes are characterized by their distinctive site planning, unique micro-climates and an understanding of the terroir of the land. However, the profession of landscape architecture remains tenuously connected to viticulture (the cultivation of grapes) and vineyard designs. Very few landscape architects are involved with the design of vineyards and little to no literature has been written on the interface between these two professions. The intent of this practicum is to articulate and demonstrate the important contribution that landscape architecture can make to viticulture by examining aesthetic values that link site and terroir to create an overall vineyard experience. Through a case study analysis of winery and vineyard sites, this practicum examines how landscape architecture can contribute to viticulture and enhance not only the experience of being in a vineyard setting but also the wine tourism industry. The result is a design for a winery and vineyard site in the Okanagan Valley that employs strategies for improving tourism by enhancing visitor experience.

"Nothing to fool around with": seniors' experiences with medications.

Vegsund, Britt 21 August 2012 (has links)
With little research documenting elderly medication users’ beliefs and attitudes towards medication, the purpose of this study is to document how seniors experience medication use within the context of their daily lives. The study population was comprised of female and male seniors aged 65 and over who were recruited from the Parksville – Qualicum Beach and Nanaimo communities of eastern Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The findings of this research suggest that for seniors, medication use is a complex and emotionally charged experience. It is an experience filled with contradictions, in which seniors are forced to negotiate between diverse realms of information concerning medications, from the directives they receive from health care professionals, to the signals they receive from their bodies. It is an experience in which powerful conceptions of medications as prolongers of life often trump an individual’s overwhelming desire to stop taking those medications. This research is intended to expand our understandings of the perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs that inform Canadian seniors’ medication use practices. Furthermore, findings from this thesis will contribute to a collaborative investigation of seniors’ experiences with medication designed to address the increasing number of adverse drug reactions experienced by the elderly. / Graduate

Formal structures of sensory/perceptual experience

Müller, Benito January 1990 (has links)
This thesis deals primarily with metaphysical issues concerning human sensory/ perceptual experiences, and with questions about the formal representation of these experiences. In this respect it is similar to N. Goodman's The Structure of Appearance, which is discussed at some length. I establish a way of des- cribing and formally representing certain structures which must occur in sensory/ perceptual experiences, regardless of how the features of these experiences are categorized in terms of being physical or being mental. A special ("ontological- ly neutral") conceptual scheme which reflects the neutrality with respect to these categorizations, and which is particularistic in the sense of admitting sensory/per- ceptual individuals (sensations), is introduced for this purpose. The choice of a particularistic conceptual scheme in this context is supported by an argument which shows that the so-called adverbial approach is insufficient for describing sensory/perceptual experiences. To achieve the desired formal representation, I introduce an original generalization of the standard formalism for semantic 1st -order predicate theories which involves incomplete models, and a type of structured primitive predicates. Based on a Kantian view of the function of concepts in experience, I then give an account of experiential colour-predicates (like x looks red) in ontologi- cally neutral terms. This account, involving a special class of sensory/perceptual individuals (colour-tokens), has the particular advantage of avoiding the short- comings of both sense-datum theories and the views held by C. Peacocke in Sense and Content. This is followed by an account of experiential intentionality (in ontologically neutral terms) which shows how intentionality, as occurring in the context of sensory/perceptual experiences, can have a relational nature, des- pite the well-known problems of substitutivity and intentional inexistence which are traditionally associated with intentional relations.

Las Vegas framväxt : En undersökning om stadens historia sett ur ett THEME:ing perspektiv

Frostell, David January 2015 (has links)

EFFECTS OF EMBRYONIC EXPOSURE TO PREDATOR CUES ON PRE- AND POST-HATCHING ANTIPREDATOR BEHAVIOUR IN COMMON CUTTLEFISH (SEPIA OFFICINALIS)

2014 December 1900 (has links)
Since neonates are often the age-class most susceptible to predation, there should be strong selective pressure on prey for the early development of successful antipredator behaviour. The ability to assess predation risk as early as the embryonic stages may increase an individual’s survival, as it would allow young individuals to be better adapted to current predation risk, since present conditions are often a good short-term indicator of future conditions. I exposed embryonic cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) to the odour of a predator and tested both the responses of the embryos to this stimulus, and the latent effects of both long (approximately 3 weeks)- and short (a few days)- exposure on the behaviour of newly-hatched juveniles, in particular the efficiency of cryptic behaviour on uniform and sandy substrates. Exposure to novel odours, whether they were predators or non-predators, increased the ventilation rate of embryos. This may be adaptive, because it helps an individual survive first encounters with unknown potential dangers before they have opportunity to collect information about a novel stimulus. Long-term exposure to predator odour increased the camouflage efficiencies of juveniles on uniform substrates. On sandy substrate, the exposure did not affect camouflage, but increased the extent of sand digging behaviour. Juveniles were also larger in size at hatching when exposed to predators compared to those that were not. These results were not seen in individuals with only short-term exposure to predator. Short-term exposure also had no effect on camouflage efficiencies on uniform or sandy substrates, or on sand digging behaviour. The results of my thesis indicate that high predation risk during embryonic development induces behavioural and morphological changes in camouflage expression and body size in cuttlefish hatchlings. The behavioural plasticity may provide survival benefits for newly hatched individuals, but may come at a cost in terms of body size. Such behavioural and morphological plasticity may have an impact on predator-prey dynamics and organization of communities.
