GEANT4 Simulations and Experimental Tests of a Silicon CD Detector

<p> In nuclear astrophysics, there are still undiscovered areas involving unstable nuclei, like the nucleosynthesis in exploding stars. The unstable nuclei are extremely difficult to produce in the laboratory for study since they decay away quickly once they are formed. To make the unstable nuclei available in the laboratory, Canada has built one of the best facilities in the world for nuclear astrophysics studies with radioactive beams, called TRIUMF-ISAC. Its recent upgrade to ISAC-2 can produce even heavier radioactive beams with higher energy. To fully utilize the ISAC-2 facility, a high-segmented HPGe γ-ray detector-TIGRESS, has been developed to study exotic nuclei using the well-established technique of Coulomb Excitation.</p> <p> As an essential part of the TIGRESS facility, auxiliary detectors, such as silicon detectors, are used to improve the sensitivity of the experiments through Doppler correction. Two types of silicon detectors will be used. One is the CD-shaped double-sided silicon strip detector, which is the topic of this thesis. The other one is the silicon barrel detector. This thesis will discuss the computer simulations and experimental tests of the CD detector.</p> <p> Simulations were made using a simulation toolkit GEANT4, which was run under the Linux system. The goal was to test the hypothesis that measurements of the energies of heavy ions in Coulomb excitation may improve the Doppler correction by constraining the scattering location in a thick target. To test the performance of the simulated CD detector, simple simulations were performed for shooting calibration alpha particles from an 241Am source first directly onto the CD and second through a thin target onto the CD. The goal of additional simulations was to attempt to determine the corresponding scattering depth in a thick target by putting an energy cut on the spectrum of the scattered beam detected in the CD. These simulation results verify the possibility of such localization, though the resolution is not very good.</p> <p> Experimental tests for the CD detector are aimed to obtain the energy resolution for each strip element of the CD and to have at least 8 channels instrumented in our test lab before this detector is sent to TIGRESS facility. The test station including electronics and detector systems and all results from initial tests are described in detail in this thesis.</p> / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Desenvolvimento de um motor de combustão interna para Fórmula SAE / Development of an internal combustion engine for Formula SAE

A presente dissertação trata do projeto de um motor de combustão interna de quatro tempos, ciclo Otto, destinado à categoria de competição Formula SAE, adequado ao mercado brasileiro. Uma extensa pesquisa bibliográfica e de mercado foi realizada para o direcionamento do projeto, além de análises experimentais para obtenção de dados. No estudo experimental foi utilizado um motor monocilíndrico de 300 cc de deslocamento volumétrico, arrefecido a ar, oriundo de uma motocicleta comercial atual, denominado nesta dissertação como \"motor base\". Esse motor foi instalado em uma bancada de dinamômetro e instrumentado de forma a permitir sua avaliação mecânica e termodinâmica. Estudos de desempenho, análises de combustão e emissões também foram realizados, incluindo utilização de etanol, variações da razão ar/combustível e sobrealimentação. Igualmente, foram feitos ensaios experimentais de componentes específicos utilizados no projeto. Os dados experimentais foram utilizados como parâmetros para o projeto mecânico do novo motor Formula SAE, e para a modelagem e simulação do motor base em fluidodinâmica computacional unidimensional (CFD-1D), que foi utilizada como ferramenta auxiliar do projeto. O escopo do projeto mecânico do motor foi restrito ao bloco, virabrequim e alguns componentes de integração, uma vez que todos os demais componentes foram extraídos do motor base e de outros motores presentes no mercado nacional. O motor Formula SAE foi projetado em ambiente computacional (CAD), sendo que para o projeto mecânico do bloco e virabrequim foram realizadas simulações computacionais estruturais, utilizando o método dos elementos finitos (FEA), para verificação da distribuição de tensões nos componentes projetados. O novo motor Formula SAE apresentou vantagens significativas em relação aos custos para aquisição de peças de montagem e reposição, e proporcionou flexibilidade de montagem e operação. / The present dissertation addresses the design of a 4 stroke Otto cycle internal combustion engine dedicated to Formula SAE student program and fitted to the Brazilian market. An extensive literature review and a market benchmark were performed, in order to provide guidance to the project, and experimental analysis for data acquisition. For the experimental study, a 300 cm3 single cylinder air cooled motorcycle engine has been used, taken from a motorcycle currently in production, available in Brazilian market, called in this dissertation as \"base engine\". This engine has been installed in a dynamometer test bench and instrumented in order to allow its mechanical and thermodynamic evaluation. Performance, combustion and emissions analysis were also performed, including ethanol fueling, air/fuel ratio variation and supercharging. Experimental tests with specific engine components were performed to provide necessary design data. The experimental data were used as input parameters for the mechanical design, as well as for modeling and simulation of the base engine on one-dimensional computer fluid dynamics, which was used as an auxiliary tool for this project. The scope of mechanical design of this engine was restrict to the crankcase, crankshaft and some assembly components, since all other components were taken from the base engine and other engines from the national market. The design was assisted by computer aided design (CAD). In order to verify the crankcase and crankshaft mechanical design regarding stress distribution, computational structural analysis have been performed using the finite element method (FEA). The new Formula SAE engine presented significant advantages regarding purchasing costs of parts for assembly and maintenance, and provided assembly and operation flexibility.

Esta pesquisa teve como principal objetivo analisar o comportamento de lajes alveolares protendidas de uso corrente no Brasil (pequenas espessuras e alta protensão) quanto ao cisalhamento em região fissurada por ação do momento fletor, para diferentes situações: sem e com capa e com preenchimento parcial de alvéolos. Foi desenvolvido um estudo teórico com o emprego de equacionamentos analíticos disponíveis na literatura técnica, envolvendo as recomendações da norma brasileira NBR 6118:2003 (Projeto de Estruturas de Concreto), do ACI-318:2008 (Building code requirements for structural concrete) e da EN 1992-1-1 (2004) (Eurocode 2- Projeto de estruturas de betão Parte 1-1: Regras gerais e regras para edifícios). Foram feitas comparações com resultados experimentais obtidos a partir de inúmeros ensaios de lajes alveolares protendidas. As unidades ensaiadas nesta pesquisa foram disponibilizadas por quatro empresas brasileiras de intensa atividade no mercado, sendo analisadas as capacidades resistentes de diferentes tipos. Assim, foram realizados 96 ensaios, 31 para a determinação da capacidade resistente à flexão e 65, ao cisalhamento, sendo selecionados modelos de lajes com grande emprego no mercado brasileiro. A partir desses ensaios, foi possível entender melhor o comportamento das lajes alveolares protendidas produzidas no Brasil. Com as diversas análises, considerando os ensaios experimentais e um vasto estudo teórico quanto ao dimensionamento dessas lajes, verificou-se a adequabilidade de equações de diferentes normas. Assim, foi possível identificar o equacionamento que melhor representa o comportamento das peças produzidas no Brasil, considerando inclusive peculiaridades de comportamento, que apresentam diferenças constratantes com relação a unidades produzidas em outros países. A partir desses estudos, produziu-se um amplo memorial de cálculo, considerando as diversas tipologias de lajes estudadas, com o objetivo de contribuir de modo didático com os engenheiros de estrururas. Logo, com esta pesquisa, foi possível não somente melhorar o entendimento do comportamento de tais lajes alveolares, como também fornecer subsídios para a avaliação desses elementos, considerando as características específicas das lajes produzidas no Brasil e, assim, contribuir para a padronização do dimensionamento junto à norma brasileira NBR 14861 (Laje pré-fabricada - Painel alveolar de concreto protendido). / This work had as major objective to analyze the behavior of Brazilian prestressed hollow core slabs - small thickness and high level of prestressing - considering shear in a cracked region due to bending moment, for different design situations: without concrete topping, with concrete topping and with filling the voids. A theoretical study was developed with the use of analytical equations available in the technical literature, involving the recommendations of the Brazilian code NBR 6118:2003 (Design of concrete structures), ACI-318: 2008 (Building code requirements for structural concrete) and EN 1992-1-1 (2004) (Eurocode 2: Design of concrete structures - Part 1-1: General rules and rules for buildings), comparing experimental results from many prestressed hollow core slabs tests. The slabs tested in this study were provided by four different Brazilian companies with intense activity in the market, and the resistant capacity of different typologies was analyzed. Thus 96 tests were made, 31 to determine the bending capacity and 64 for the determination of shear strength, and were selected slab models from the Brazilian market that are highly employed. From these tests, it was possible a better understanding of the prestressed hollow core slabs behavior produced in Brazil. With several analysis considering the experimental tests and an ample theoretical study about the design of these slabs, the adequacy of different codes equations were verified. Thus, it was possible to identify the equations that best represent the behavior of elements produced in Brazil, also considering the behaviour peculiarities of these slabs that have contrasting differences, if compared with units produced in other countries. From these studies it was produced a large design manual, considering the various types of studied slabs, aiming to contribute in a didactic way to the structural engineers. So, with this research, it was possible not only to improve comprehension of the behavior of such prestressed hollow core slabs, as well as provide information for evaluation of these elements, considering the specific characteristics of the slabs fabricated in Brazil and thus to contribute with the standardization of the design in the Brazilian code NBR 14861 (Prefabricated slab - Prestressed concrete hollow core panel).

Gelžbetoninių sijų tempimo sustandėjimo modelis / Tension stiffening model for reinforced concrete beams

Gelžbetonis yra kompozitinė medžiaga, kurios komponentai yra betonas ir plieninė armatūra. Kaip žinoma, betono stipris tempiant yra 1020 kartų mažesnis nei stipris gniuždant. Atrodytų, kad tempiamojo betono įtaka, atlaikant įrąžas skerspjūvyje, yra nereikšminga. Iš tiesų, nustatant lenkiamųjų elementų stiprumą normaliniame pjūvyje, tempiamo betono įtempių galima nevertinti. Kita vertus, skaičiuojant įlinkius, neįvertinus tempiamojo betono įtakos, gali būti daroma didesnė nei 100 % paklaida. Adekvatus supleišėjusio tempiamojo betono įtakos įvertinimas, nustatant trumpalaike apkrova veikiamų gelžbetoninių elementų deformacijas, yra bene svarbiausia ir sudėtingiausia problema. Plyšio vietoje betonas negali atlaikyti tempimo įtempių, todėl visą įrąžą atlaiko armatūra. Kadangi plyšyje ir gretimuose pjūviuose armatūra praslysta betono atžvilgiu, kontakto zonoje atsiranda tangentiniai įtempiai. Šie įtempiai perduodami betonui, todėl jis atlaiko tempimo įtempius. Armatūros ir betono sąveika ruožuose tarp plyšių standina gelžbetoninį elementą. Supleišėjusio betono gebėjimas atlaikyti tempimo įtempius vadinama tempimo sustandėjimu (angl. tension stiffening). Šis efektas dažniausiai modeliuojamas supleišėjusio betono įtempių ir deformacijų diagrama, taikant vidutinių plyšių koncepciją. Tuomet neatsižvelgiama į diskrečius plyšius, o supleišėjęs betonas traktuojamas kaip ortotropinė medžiaga su pakitusiomis savybėmis. Dauguma tempimo sustandėjimo modelių įvertina betono įtempių... [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Modelling behaviour of cracked tensile concrete is a complicated issue. Due to bond with reinforcement, the cracked concrete between cracks carries a certain amount of tensile force normal to the cracked plane. Concrete adheres to rein-forcement bars and contributes to overall stiffness of the structure. The phe-nomenon, called tension-stiffening, has significant influence on the results of short-term deformational analysis. Assumption of a tension-stiffening law has great influence on numerical results of load – deflection behaviour of reinforced concrete members subjected to short – term loading. Under wrong assumption of this law, errors in calculated deflections, particularly for lightly members, may exceed 100 %. Most known tension-stiffening relationships relate average stresses to average strains. However, some experimental and theoretical investi-gations have shown that tension-stiffening may be affected by other parameters. The scientific supervisor of the thesis has proposed a tension-stiffening model depending on reinforcement ratio. This model has been developed using experi-mental data reported in the literature. Besides, concrete shrinkage effect was not taken into account. The main objective of this PhD dissertation is to propose a tension-stiffening law for bending RC members subjected to short-term loading with eliminated concrete shrinkage effect.

Influence de la taille et de la gradation des particules sur la résistance au cisaillement et le comportement dilatant des matériaux granulaires

Résumé : Cette étude examine l'impact de la taille et de la gradation de particules sur les corrélations théoriques et empiriques existantes les plus connues entre la résistance au cisaillement et le comportement dilatatant des matériaux granulaires en condition de déformation plane et en compression triaxiale drainée. À cette fin, 276 tests de cisaillements symétriques directs et 35 tests de compressions triaxiales drainées ont été menés sur des échantillons composés de billes de basalte (particules rondes), et de sables constitués de particules angulaires (sable de Péribonka et sable d'Eastmain) sur une échelle de 63 µm à 2000 µm afin d'évaluer leur résistance au cisaillement et leur comportement de dilatance sur une vaste échelle de pressions normales et de densités relatives initiales. Premièrement, la fiabilité et l'applicabilité des limites de mesure à l’aide de tests physiques de cisaillements symétriques directs dans l'interprétation de la résistance au cisaillement frictionnel en déformation plane des matériaux granulaires ont été discutées et confirmées par l'usage du code informatique DEM, SiGran. L'accent a été particulièrement mis sur la validation du modèle DEM au moyen de comparaison des résultats des simulations DEM avec leurs équivalents physiques à une échelle macro. Les résultats virtuels DSA sont abordés du point de vue de la coaxialité entre les principales tensions et les principales directions des paliers de pression ainsi que de la déviation de la direction d'extension nulle à partir de la direction horizontale. Les résultats numériques fournissent également des données quantitatives sur les différentes formes d'énergie consommées durant le cisaillement confirmées par d'autres résultats physiques et numériques publiés. Sur la base des postulats précédents, un examen minutieux des résultats des essais de cisaillements directs et de données issues de la littérature a été accompli afin d'évaluer la fiabilité des formules empiriques bien connues de Bolton et Collins et al. avec leurs constantes couramment employées en condition de déformation plane. L'étude montre qu'une application des relations empiriques de force-dilatation de cisaillement avec les constantes proposées par Bolton (1986) et Collins et al. (1992) aux sables ayant une distribution de taille de particules différente peut conduire à surestimer leurs valeurs en terme de force de cisaillement. Dans cette étude, les coefficients des équations de Bolton et Collins et al. ont donc été ajustée afin de prendre en compte les caractéristiques des particules, en particulier le diamètre médian, D50. De manière analogue, les effets microstructuraux imposés par la géométrie interne des particules (par exemple la taille, la forme et la gradation des particules) sur la relation tension-dilatation très connue, celle de Rowe (1962), et son ajustement empirique en condition triaxiale drainée ont été examinés dans cette étude. Une comparaison des prédictions des formules proposées avec les données de force de cisaillement issues de la littérature fournit de nombreuses preuves en faveur des contraintes mises en place au sein des relations existantes de force-dilatation de cisaillement en condition de déformation plane et triaxiale. Ces comparaisons prouvent également que la prise en compte de la taille des grains conduit à des résultats plus tangibles que lorsque la taille de la particule n'est pas considérée. Les formules de force-dilatation ajustées peuvent se révéler avantageuses pour évaluer indépendamment la cohérence des forces de cisaillement déterminées expérimentalement et pour introduire des lois d’écoulement plus précises dans les analyses géotechniques analytiques et numériques. / Abstract : The present study examines more closely the potential impact of particle size and gradation on the most famous existing theoretical and empirical correlations between the shear strength and the dilation behavior of granular materials in plane strain and drained triaxial compression conditions. For this purpose, 276 symmetrical direct shear and 35 drained triaxial compression tests have been carried out on samples made up of basalt beads (rounded particles), and sands consisting of angular particles (Péribonka sand and Eastmain sand) in the range of 63 µm to 2000 µm to evaluate their shear resistance and dilation behavior over a wide range of normal pressures and initial relative densities. First, the reliability and applicability of boundary measurements in physical symmetrical direct shear tests to interpret the plane strain frictional shearing resistance of granular material have been discussed and confirmed using DEM computer code SiGran. Particular emphasis is placed on the validation of the DEM model by comparing the results of DEM simulations with their physical counterparts at the macro-scale. The virtual DSA results are discussed in terms of the coaxiality between the principal stresses and the principal strains increments directions as well as the deviation of the zero extension direction from the horizontal direction. The numerical results also provide quantitative data on different forms of energy consumed during shearing confirming other published physical and numerical results found in the literature. Following the assumptions above, a close scrutiny of symmetrical direct shear test results and strength and dilation data from the literature have been done to evaluate the reliability of well-known empirical Bolton’s and Collins et al.’s formulations with their commonly used constants in plane strain condition. The study shows that an application of empirical shear strength-dilation relationships with the constants proposed by Bolton (1986) and Collins et al. (1992) to sands with different particle-size distribution may strongly over-predict their shear strength values. In this study, the coefficients of Bolton’s and Collins et al.’s equations have been, therefore, adjusted to account for particle characteristics, in particular for D50. Similarly, the microstructural effects imposed by internal particle geometry (e.g. particle-size, particle shape, and particle gradation) on most popular stress-dilatancy relationship of Rowe (1962), and its empirical adjustment in drained triaxial condition have been investigated in this study. A comparison of the predictions by the proposed formulas with shear strength data from the literature provides evidences in support of the implemented constraints into existing shear strength-dilation relations in plane strain and drained triaxial conditions. These comparisons also proves that accounting for the grain size yields more authentic results than when particle size is not considered. The adjusted strength-dilation formulas may be beneficial for independently assessing the consistency of the experimentally-determined shear strengths, and introducing more refined flow rules into analytical and numerical geotechnical analyses.

Aplicabilidade de modelos constitutivos para analisar o comportamento mecânico de um biopolímero / Applicability of constitutive models to analyze the mechanical behavior of a biopolymer

Este trabalho aborda o estudo de modelos constitutivos a fim de analisar o comportamento mecânico de um biopolímero derivado de óleo de mamona (Ricinus communis). A importância deste trabalho se dá ao fato de: servir como roteiro de ensaio de materiais poliméricos; completar caracterização do material estudado além do regime viscoelástico, bem como aplicação da análise do comportamento do material além do regime viscoelástico linear. A aplicação dos modelos avaliados via Método dos Elementos Finitos (MEF) exigiu o levantamento das propriedades e do comportamento mecânico do biopolímero, bem como a preparação dos ensaios, com as devidas especificações sugeridas pela ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) para cada tipo de ensaio. Assim, foram obtidos os corposde- prova (CDP) para a realização dos ensaios mecânicos quase-estáticos de tração, compressão e flexão (monotônicos e cíclicos), bem como, ensaio para análise dinâmicomecânica (Dynamic Mechanical Analysis - DMA) para a obtenção de propriedades associada às parcelas viscosas do material. Com estes foram obtidos parâmetros inerentes a cada tipo de ensaio, permeados com uma cuidadosa revisão bibliográfica sobre as implicações para a realização de cada ensaio. Uma outra etapa foi a verificação de modelos de plastificação baseados na teoria de von Mises, Drucker-Prager e de viscoelasticidade implementados no programa comercial ABAQUS®. Sendo que o objetivo maior foi a comparação dos resultados experimentais obtidos com os modelos em MEF. Os resultados para tração monotônica obtiveram erro de 0,61%, os resultados de compressão monotônica apresentaram erro de 1,5% e as simulações para os carregamentos cíclicos de tração e compressão não foram tão bons quanto os anteriores. Por isso se justifica a criação do modelo fenomenológico utilizando os parâmetros do material que foram identificados. / This work develops the study involving constitutive models with the objective to analyze the mechanical behavior of a biopolymer obtained from the Castor Oil Polyurethane (Ricinus communis). The importance of this work is due to the fact that: serves as a test script for the use of polymer materials; complete the characterization of the material studied beyond the viscoelastic realm, as well as the application of the analysis of the behavior of the material beyond the linear viscoelastic domain. The application of the evaluated models by way of the Finite Element Method (FEM), required the gathering of the properties and mechanical behavior of the biopolymer, as well as the preparation of the tests, with the required specifications suggested by the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) for each type of test. Therefore, there were obtained the body-tests in order to run the mechanical quasi-static traction tests, tensile, compression and flexion (monotonic and cyclical) dynamicmechanical analysis (DMA) in order to obtain the properties associated with the viscous parts of the material. With these the inherent parameters were obtained for each specimen, permeated with a careful biographical revision of the implications for the experimenting of each specimen. Another phase was the verification of laminated models based on the theory by Von Mises, Drucker-Prager and of the viscoelasticity implemented in the commercial program ABAQUS®. The main objective being the comparison of the experimental results obtained with the models in FEM. The results for the monotonic traction obtained a error of 0,61%, the results of monotonic comparison presented an error of 1,5% and the simulations for the cyclical charges of traction and compression were not as good as the former. Therefore it justifies the creation of the phenomenological model utilizing the parameters of the materials that were identified.

As estruturas aeronáuticas estão sujeitas a diversas solicitações, devido principalmente às interações com o escoamento aerodinâmico, que podem causar distúrbios e vibrações, comprometendo seu desempenho. As medidas aerodinâmicas aplicadas em uma aeronave podem ser obtidas por simulações computacionais ou testes experimentais. No entanto, podem existir imperfeições na simulação computacional, como por exemplo, se conseguir reproduzir algumas condições de vôo real. Sendo assim, diversas pesquisas vêm sendo realizadas para solucionar estes problemas. Dentre elas estão os testes experimentais feitos em túnel de vento com modelos de escala real em diversas condições de vôo. Desta forma, a construção de um modelo físico de um aerofólio em escala reduzida e a implementação de sensores a este modelo torna-se uma ferramenta bastante importante para validar resultados teóricos e experimentais. Assim, nesse trabalho realizou-se a construção de um modelo de aerofólio NACA0012, o desenvolvimento de um mecanismo de fixação do modelo ao túnel de vento e a implementação de um controlador de oscilação forçada. O modelo físico realiza oscilações harmônicas, em regime não-estacionário. O objetivo do trabalho foi mapear as medidas de pressão atuantes sobre modelo ensaiado em regime estacionário e não-estacionário e fazer a comparação entre os dois casos. / Aeronautical structures are affected by many loads, most of them given by the aerodynamic flow interactions. These flow interactions may cause vibration leading to structural failure, such as cracks and fatigue. The aerodynamic flow interactions can be measured by experiment or predicted by computational simulation. Otherwise, computational simulations on its own are not reliable and can not reproduce a real flight condition, such as the mean atmospheric turbulence dynamic. Many researches has been done to solve these problems for computational simulations. One of them are the wind tunnel experiments with a full scale models in many flight conditions for posterior comparison. For a smaller wind tunnel, a small scale physical prototype well instrumented becomes an important solution to validate theoretical and experimental results. In the present work the construction of a NACA 0012 airfoil model, the development of a constraint mechanism and the implementation of a forced oscilation control system were done. The physical model oscilates with a given frequency. The aim of present work is to map the pressure measurements actuating on the model, testing it under a steady state condition and a transient condition for posterior comparison of both conditions.

Tension stiffening model for reinforced concrete beams / Gelžbetoninių sijų tempimo sustandėjimo modelis

Modelling behaviour of cracked tensile concrete is a complicated issue. Due to bond with reinforcement, the cracked concrete between cracks carries a certain amount of tensile force normal to the cracked plane. Concrete adheres to rein-forcement bars and contributes to overall stiffness of the structure. The phe-nomenon, called tension-stiffening, has significant influence on the results of short-term deformational analysis. Assumption of a tension-stiffening law has great influence on numerical results of load – deflection behaviour of reinforced concrete members subjected to short – term loading. Under wrong assumption of this law, errors in calculated deflections, particularly for lightly members, may exceed 100 %. Most known tension-stiffening relationships relate average stresses to average strains. However, some experimental and theoretical investi-gations have shown that tension-stiffening may be affected by other parameters. The scientific supervisor of the thesis has proposed a tension-stiffening model depending on reinforcement ratio. This model has been developed using experi-mental data reported in the literature. Besides, concrete shrinkage effect was not taken into account. The main objective of this PhD dissertation is to propose a tension-stiffening law for bending RC members subjected to short-term loading with eliminated concrete shrinkage effect. / Gelžbetonis yra kompozitinė medžiaga, kurios komponentai yra betonas ir plieninė armatūra. Kaip žinoma, betono stipris tempiant yra 10-20 kartų mažesnis nei stipris gniuždant. Atrodytų, kad tempiamojo betono įtaka, atlaikant įrąžas skerspjūvyje, yra nereikšminga. Iš tiesų, nustatant lenkiamųjų elementų stiprumą normaliniame pjūvyje, tempiamo betono įtempių galima nevertinti. Kita vertus, skaičiuojant įlinkius, neįvertinus tempiamojo betono įtakos, gali būti daroma didesnė nei 100 % paklaida. Adekvatus supleišėjusio tempiamojo betono įtakos įvertinimas, nustatant trumpalaike apkrova veikiamų gelžbetoninių elementų deformacijas, yra bene svarbiausia ir sudėtingiausia problema. Plyšio vietoje betonas negali atlaikyti tempimo įtempių, todėl visą įrąžą atlaiko armatūra. Kadangi plyšyje ir gretimuose pjūviuose armatūra praslysta betono atžvilgiu, kontakto zonoje atsiranda tangentiniai įtempiai. Šie įtempiai perduodami betonui, todėl jis atlaiko tempimo įtempius. Armatūros ir betono sąveika ruožuose tarp plyšių standina gelžbetoninį elementą. Supleišėjusio betono gebėjimas atlaikyti tempimo įtempius vadinama tempimo sustandėjimu (angl. tension stiffening). Šis efektas dažniausiai modeliuojamas supleišėjusio betono įtempių ir deformacijų diagrama, taikant vidutinių plyšių koncepciją. Tuomet neatsižvelgiama į diskrečius plyšius, o supleišėjęs betonas traktuojamas kaip ortotropinė medžiaga su pakitusiomis savybėmis. Dauguma tempimo sustandėjimo modelių įvertina betono įtempių...
