Turrillot, Paul 17 December 2010 (has links) (PDF)

Scaffolding extensive reading in the beginning adult education ESL classroom

Meredith, Nancy Grona 13 July 2011 (has links)
Research has showed repeatedly the value of extensive reading in the L2 classroom for improved reading comprehension (Elley & Mangubhai, 1981; Mason & Krashen, 1997; Renandya, Rajan, & Jacobs, 1999). However, additional support beyond traditional extensive reading practices may be needed for very low proficiency learners. This report reviews research on implementing an extensive reading program for beginning level adult-education English language learners. It presents arguments for supporting extensive reading through shared reading, including read-alouds, use of children’s literature, and strategy modeling techniques. It also discusses the benefits of student-generated texts for boosting vocabulary and comprehension skills. The report concludes with pedagogical implications for including a strong reading component in the adult education ESL curriculum and suggestions for evaluating the strength and utility of such a program. / text

Investigations into soil nutrient and change in soil physical characteristics under complementary forage rotation in comparison to pasture systems for dairy cows

Kabore, Bertin January 2009 (has links)
Master of Science in Veterinary Science / A investigation into soil nutrient and the change soil physical properties was carried out for three pasture systems for dairy cows; the complementary forage rotation (CFR) which comprised of brassica (Brassica napus )/clover (Trifolium resupinatum ) and maize (Zea mays) capable of achieving more than 40 t/ha, the typical intensive pasture (PI) with kikuyu grass (Penisetum clandestinum) over-sown with ryegrass ( Lolium multiflorum ) and the extensive system (PE); on two soil types (brown chromosol and black vertisol) . The study demonstrated that the CFR system was capable of doubling its yield by using similar fertilizers (N, P and K) and water inputs compared to these of the PI system resulting of greater nutrients (N and K) and water use efficiencies. Overall, the nutrient lost through runoff water was very limited for two intensive systems and nearly nil for PE system. Also similar trends were observed for soil physical properties in the intensive systems except for the topsoil (0-10 cm) where light acidification (P= 0.04) was recorded in the CFR probably due to the soil works before the maize sowing.

The tropical forages, however, are limited in some nutrients, especially in minerals, which can compromise the results of cattle production. Among the minerals, phosphorus (P) occupies an important position due to its role in animals' metabolism and to its cost, which represents most of the mineral supplements costs, so rendering this input the most expensive for the definition of the production costs of cattle raised in grasslands. Often, the farmers do not follow the ideal techniques for the animal's' mineral supplementation and, besides that, practical observations suggest that not always the animal productivity is related to the mineral supplementation techniques or with the P contents of the supplements. Following the hypothesis that the recommended levels of P can be reduced without damaging the animal productivity, the aim of this trial was to check on the effects of reducing the phosphorus supplementation concentrations (from 4% to 1.8%) in a beef cow herd raised on Urochloa decumbens pastures on the productive and reproductive parameters, as well as on the supplementation costs. The study was conducted on the cerrado biome, from 2011 to 2013. Variables analyzed included pregnancy rate, calving interval, weight of calves at weaning and cost of supplementation. No changes were found for the productive and reproductive performance of the herd. However, there was a significant reduction in the supplementation costs when the herd was supplemented with a mineral mixture containing 1.8% phosphorus

Historical processes and structural factors of deforestation in the Amazon: the case of Tena, Ecuador (2014) / Procesos políticos y estructurales de la deforestación en la Amazonía: el caso de Tena, Ecuador (2014)

Gómez de la Torre, Sara, Anda, Susana, Bedoya Garland, Eduardo 10 April 2018 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to analyze and describe the historical, institutional and structural factors of deforestation taking into account the dynamics of intensification or «extensification» of land use in the Amazon region of Tena in Ecuador. A first conclusion was finding the reproduction of an extensive pattern of agriculture in Tena as an important direct agent of deforestation. We believe that this agricultural system originates in historical processes from the sixties, when the state intervenes promoting certain policies of extensive land use, through road construction and specific mechanisms of land titling. The current social and institutional dynamics have failed to reverse such situation, since deforestation is still playing, although there is a tendency to close the agricultural frontier. The indicated form of farming and the corresponding rates of deforestation are played today as a result of structural factors, such as farm size, proximity to roads, the type of technology used and unfavorable market linkages.
