Seeing the world through others minds Inferring social context from behaviour

No / Past research tells us that individuals can infer information about a target’s emotional state and intentions from their facial expressions (Frith & Frith, 2012), a process known as mentalising. This extends to inferring the events that caused the facial reaction (e.g. Pillai, Sheppard, & Mitchell, 2012; Pillai et al., 2014), an ability known as retrodictive mindreading. Here, we enter new territory by investigating whether or not people (perceivers) can guess a target’s social context by observing their response to stimuli. In Experiment 1, perceivers viewed targets’ responses and were able to determine whether these targets were alone or observed by another person. In Experiment 2, another group of perceivers, without any knowledge of the social context or what the targets were watching, judged whether targets were hiding or exaggerating their facial expressions; and their judgments discriminated between conditions in which targets were observed and alone. Experiment 3 established that another group of perceivers’ judgments of social context were associated with estimations of target expressivity to some degree. In Experiments 1 and 2, the eye movements of perceivers also varied between conditions in which targets were observed and alone. Perceivers were thus able to infer a target’s social context from their visible response. The results demonstrate an ability to use other minds as a window onto a social context that could not be seen directly.

Enhancing Security and Privacy in Head-Mounted Augmented Reality Systems Using Eye Gaze

Augmented Reality (AR) devices are set apart from other mobile devices by the immersive experience they offer. Specifically, head-mounted AR devices can accurately sense and understand their environment through an increasingly powerful array of sensors such as cameras, depth sensors, eye gaze trackers, microphones, and inertial sensors. The ability of these devices to collect this information presents both challenges and opportunities to improve existing security and privacy techniques in this domain. Specifically, eye gaze tracking is a ready-made capability to analyze user intent, emotions, and vulnerability, and as an input mechanism. However, modern AR devices lack systems to address their unique security and privacy issues. Problems such as lacking local pairing mechanisms usable while immersed in AR environments, bystander privacy protections, and the increased vulnerability to shoulder surfing while wearing AR devices all lack viable solutions. In this dissertation, I explore how readily available eye gaze sensor data can be used to improve existing methods for assuring information security and protecting the privacy of those near the device. My research has presented three new systems, BystandAR, ShouldAR, and GazePair that each leverage user eye gaze to improve security and privacy expectations in or with Augmented Reality. As these devices grow in power and number, such solutions are necessary to prevent perception failures that hindered earlier devices. Effects of Motion on Infants' Negativity Bias in Emotion Perception

The negativity bias is a phenomenon that is characterized by infants being more influenced by, attending more to, and responding to more negative emotion information from the environment than positive emotion information. This study used a Tobii© T60 eye-tracking system to examine differences in 8- to 12-month-old infants' latencies to disengage from a centrally-presented face for three different emotion conditions-happy, sad, and fear. The events also varied by motion type-static versus dynamic. Additionally, infants' locomotor experience and parental affect served as two additional measures of experience, and assessed for their contributions to the infants' negativity bias. It was expected that infants would show longer latencies to disengage from the negative emotion events (fear or sad) compared to the positive emotion event (happy), but also that the latencies would be augmented by event type (dynamic > static), locomotion experience (high > low), and parental affect (higher negativity > lower negativity). Although infants showed more attention to dynamic than static emotion displays (especially on the speaker's mouth), and more attention to happy and sad compared to fear displays, no consistent effect of emotion type was found on infants' attention disengagement. Thus, no evidence for a negativity bias was seen. The results are interpreted with respect to possible contributions of the bimodal nature of emotion expression in the current study as well as age-related attentional differences in responding to a wide range of emotion cues. / Master of Science

The Role of Contingency and Ostensive Cues on Infants' Cognitively Demanding Word-Object Learning

Older infants are good referential learners. That is, at around 14-months of age, they begin to learn the verbal labels of objects and events around them. However, referential learning can be made more challenging by increasing the lexical similarity between labels. The primary goal of this study was to examine whether an adult speaker's ostensive cues and eye gaze-object contingency could augment referential learning in 14-month-old infants under difficult conditions (i.e., minimal pair labels). In Experiment 1, infants were familiarized and tested on two word-object associations with minimal pairs (e.g., "bin" and "din"), presented on an eye-tracker. Importantly, each session began when infants made eye contact with a female speaker on the screen, and she continually looked at and verbally referenced each object in an infant-directed style. On test trials when the familiar object+label was switched, infants significantly increased their visual scanning of the speaker's mouth compared to control trials. In Experiment 2, the same procedure was followed with a new group of 14-month-olds, except that the speaker now looked in the opposite direction from the objects on the screen, but continued to label them with minimal pairs in an infant-directed style. In contrast to the results of Experiment 1, infants in this latter experiment did not differentially attend to any area of her face during the switch trials. This pattern of results shows that the ostensive nature of a social partner augments infants' referential learning under cognitive challenge, but it is the contingent nature of the speaker's regard to what is being labeled that is a necessary factor in promoting learning. / Ph. Evaluating Consumer Response to Environmental Labels on Packaging Using Eye-Tracking

Labeling is one way consumers evaluate products for purchase. Environmental labeling is used to provide environmental information to the consumer. If a person is familiar with a particular labeling process they may be more inclined to consume such product. This study used the Tobii© T60 eye-tracking system to determine differences in gaze durations and time to first fixation between the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) label and an unsubstantiated label. Labels were placed on two different products (toilet paper and paper plates) and four locations (top-right corner, bottom-right corner, top-left corner, and bottom-left corner). Additionally, after the participants viewed the images they were asked to complete the six-question GREEN Consumer Values scale and then asked to sort eighteen different images based on label type and price. Participants did not differentiate between the two labels. Labels placed in the bottom-right corner received the least amount of attention (as measured by fixation duration) when compared to labels placed in the other three corners. Eye-tracking data was then split at the median and two groups were created: low label fixators versus high label fixators. High label fixators scored overall higher on the GREEN Consumer Values scale than low label fixators. Participants sorted the 18 products based on price, putting the lowest-labeled product first 84% of the time. Future studies could include looking at other environmental labels and broader populations. / Master of Science

Injury Biomechanics of the Human Eye During Blunt and Blast Loading

The research presented in this thesis investigates eye injuries caused by blunt impacts and blast overpressure. This research represents part of an ongoing investigation to accurately quantify and predict eye injuries and injury mechanisms for various loading schemes. It has been shown that blunt trauma can cause severe eye injuries but it remains undecided whether blast overpressure alone can cause eye injury. Presented herein are four experimental studies that quantify eye injuries and implement a technique for predicting injury risk. Isolated porcine or human eyes were subjected to various loading conditions consisting of blunt projectiles, water streams, remote control helicopter blades, and blast overpressure. All eyes were prepared in a similar manner that required the insertion of a miniature pressure sensor into the globe through the optic nerve. This sensor measured intraocular pressure throughout each event. Using previously published injury risk curves, this intraocular pressure data was used to predict the injury risk for four eye injuries: hyphema, lens damage, retinal damage, and globe rupture. Injuries sustained were quantified upon direct inspection of the globe following testing. No serious eye injuries were observed for any of the tests and all tests resulted in low predicted injury risks consistent with the lack of observed injury. The research presented in this thesis provides a robust low injury level dataset for eye injuries. This data could be useful for designing and validating computational models and anthropomorphic test device eyes, and serves as a basis for future work with more dangerous projectiles and higher pressure levels. / Master of Science
