The requirements of ecological studies and water resource management plans are driving demand for hydrological models of the rivers of the arid zone. Knowledge of the hydrology of Australia’s arid zone is poor, yet is critical in understanding the ecology of the region. The research presented in this thesis seeks to address some shortcomings in our understanding of the hydrology of the Australian arid zone. In particular, the research examines the requirements for modelling the flow regime of arid zone rivers, concentrating on the rivers of the Lake Eyre Basin (LEB). The LEB has exceptionally low annual runoff of 3.5 mm, its major rivers develop over extremely low gradients and are characterised by very wide floodplains and complex anastomosing flow paths in their mid to lower reaches. This research was driven by both a practical and theoretical impetus. Practically, hydrological data were required at the water body scale for a large number of sites across three river systems of the LEB, for use in a study, known as ARIDFLO, of the ecological responses to hydrological conditions. Because of the remoteness of these sites and the paucity of gauging stations on these rivers, modelling of the rivers was the only method for delivering the required discharge data. Theoretically, the challenge was set for creating hydrological models for some extraordinarily complex river systems, in terms of their size, catchment characteristics and flow regime variability. A presente dissertação tem como objetivo investigar a sedimentação sócio-histórica do romance de estreia de Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre (1847), a partir de seu foco narrativo. Ao atentar à fortuna crítica da obra, em especial às resenhas que seguiram a publicação do romance e às críticas materialista e feminista, distinguem-se duas tendências, dois modos de entender Jane Eyre. Por meio da análise de trechos do romance, visa-se ilustrar como essas duas vias de leitura são possíveis por conta da posição ambígua da narradora-personagem dentro da sociedade vitoriana. Expandindo o conceito de Terry Eagleton do in between, argumenta-se que, por estar sempre em uma posição entre as classes alta e baixa e por desejar inserção, Jane relata e denuncia as violências que permeiam a sociedade vitoriana e, ao mesmo tempo, incorpora o discurso dominante, mesmo quando esse vai contra ela mesma. Entende-se, assim, que o romance retrata a situação contraditória da classe média e o impacto de viver nessa posição na própria consciência do indivíduo, isto é, na sua visão de si e do mundo, como observado na voz da narradora de Jane Eyre. / The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the social and historical sedimentation of Charlotte Brontës 1847 debut novel, Jane Eyre, by exploring its point of view. Drawing from the novels literary criticism, especially from the reviews that followed its publication and from the Feminist and Marxist criticism, two different ways of understanding Jane Eyre are distinguished. The close reading of excerpts from Charlotte Brontës work aims at highlighting that these two readings are possible due to the narrators ambiguous position in the Victorian social structure. By expanding Terry Eagletons concept of the in between, it is discussed that, since Jane is from the very beginning of the novel in a position between the upper and lower classes and she longs for inclusion, she accounts on and denounces the violence that permeated the Victorian society, just as, at the same time, she incorporates the dominant discourse even when it speaks against herself. Thus, it is understood that the novel portrays the contradictory situation of the petty bourgeoisie and the impact of being in such a position on the individuals consciousness, as it is seen in Jane Eyres narrators voice.

Uppsatsen analyserar förändringar i berättartekniken när Charlotte Brontës roman Jane Eyre adapteras till serieroman och till film. Syftet med uppsatsen är att undersöka hur de berättartekniska aspekterna intrig, tid och berättare kan förändras vid adaptioner från roman till serieroman och till film, samt vilka didaktiska begränsningar och möjligheter adaptioner medför för lärare som ämnar arbeta med adaptioner. Uppsatsen utgår från en komparativ metod med hjälp av adaptionsteori, och av berättartekniska analysverktyg som är hämtade från bl.a. narratologin. Analysen visar att intrigen är möjlig att överföra från roman till andra medier, medan tid och berättare kräver ombearbetning. Vidare visar diskussionen att svensklärare som överväger att erbjuda sina elever att ta del av skönlitteratur via andra medier än böcker bör vara observanta på vilka förändringar som adaptioner medför och hur det påverkar undervisningsmöjligheterna.

The essay explores a new way of interpreting the role of setting in Jane Eyre arguing that nature does not only provide a pretty backdrop for the story. The theoretical approach used in the study is ecocriticism, an earth-centered method. This approach is juxtaposed with a traditional linear analysis of setting in Jane Eyre. The essay is structured along two main lines. In the first part I challenge the traditional linear approach to setting and in the second I show that Jane Eyre is intertwined with nature from the very start. Lawrence Buell’s theory of place, in particular, is used to demonstrate that Eyre is not necessarily a lost soul. By contrast, the many descriptions of nature in the novel imply that her character is so entwined with setting that she could be at home wherever life may take her.
