Dynamical reflection algebras and associated boundary integrable models / Algèbres de réflexion dynamiques et modèles associésFilali Amine, Ghali 12 December 2011 (has links)
This thesis is embedded in the general theory of quantum integrable models withboundaries, and the development of associated algebraic structures. We first consider the question of the diagonalization of the XXZ hamiltonian with nondiagonalboundaries. We succeed to find the two sets of eigenstates and eigenvalues of themodel if the boundaries parameters satisfy two conditions. We introduce then a statistical physics model which we refer to be the face model witha reflecting end. Moreover, we compute exactly its partition function and show that it takesthe form of a simple single matrix determinant. We show that these two problems are related through the vertex-face transformationand are solved using a common algebraic structure, the dynamical reflection algebra andits dual. We focus from a mathematical perspective on this algebra in the general ellipticcase. Both the co-module evaluation representation and its dual are introduced. We believethat these structures are the key ingredients for the analysis of face models with boundaries. In particular, using the concept of Drinfel’d twists, we show that the partition function ofthese models has a simple representation in the general case. Finally, we attempt on a ’dynamization’ of the Half-Turn-Symmetric vertexmodel. Wedescribe its partition function in terms of the evaluation representation of the dynamicalYang-Baxter algebra, and find a set of conditions that uniquely determine it.

Accuracy Variations in Human Facial Identification Based on Time of Exposure.Cowle, Kenneth M. 12 1900 (has links)
This study examined the relationship between time of exposure to the human face and accurate subsequent photo line-up identification. A volunteer group of 124 undergraduate students was divided into three approximately equal sized subgroups. The three groups were then exposed to a video or a portion of a video depicting a theft. Exposure times ranged from two minutes to 30 seconds. The subjects were then given a questionnaire and shown a photo line-up of the mock perpetrator and five foils. Subjects were asked to identify the perpetrator and mark that identification on the questionnaire. Results of the experiment indicated that the longer a subject was exposed the greater the possibility of an accurate identification.

Volumetric data structures are of extreme utility in various applications, and particularly in the area of Scientific Visualization. These structures are useful in two stages of the visualization process. The first one is in data representation, that is, in the organization of information associated with the values, measured or simulated, to be visualized. The other phase of the visualization data flow that needs a data structure is the exploration phase. It would be useful to have a model designed to be used both for interactive exploration and for simulation in a number of application, for example, in virtual surgery. A volumetric data structure, named Singular Half-Face (SHF) is being developed at the ICMC, that has as its main characteristic the explicit modeling of singularities present in the model, besides other essential topological elements. This dissertation aims at testing the viability of this structure in a context of visualization in data flow, by incorporating it in the Visualization ToolKit (VTK) class library, whose data structures are extremely poor in definition of the topology of the objects that they represent. By adding SHF to this library and carrying out conventional visualization and data exploration on it, we wish to study its support to all the phases of the visualization process.

Euphemism in Tshivenda : a socio-pragmatic analysisMudau, Mmbulaheni Lawrence January 2016 (has links)
Thesis (Ph. D. (Tshivenda)) --University of Limpopo, 2016 / This study examined Tshivenḓa euphemisms from a socio-pragmatic perspective within a framework of Politeness and Indirectness Communicative theories. According to Brown and Levinson (1987), Politeness Theory describes politeness as showing concern for people’s ‘face’ needs where ‘face’ means one’s public self-image. In terms of the Indirectness Communicative Theory, euphemism is a face saving mechanism which emphasizes mutual cooperation in a conversation.
Euphemisms are described as substitutions of agreeable or inoffensive expressions for ones that may offend or suggest something unpleasant. They are words with meanings or sounds that are thought, somehow, to be nicer, cleaner or more elevated and they are used as substitutes for words deemed unpleasant, crude or ugly in sound or sense.
The study adopted a descriptive and exploratory design within a qualitative research approach, based on the view that qualitative research aims at explaining complex phenomena by means of verbal description rather than testing hypotheses with numerical values. Furthermore, primary data were elicited from 25 participants of different ages, genders, educational levels, social status and occupations who are native speakers of the Tshivenḓa language by means of semi-structured interviews. Since this study involved working with humans, all ethical aspects were ensured.
The study, which investigated the use of Tshivenḓa euphemisms, was conducted in seven social domains in Venḓa in the Vhembe District: local courts, churches, homes, hospitals, girls in seclusion, schools and electronic media. The study’s findings show evidence of the use of Tshivenḓa euphemisms in these various domains. However, the court domain seems not to use many euphemisms due to the fact that clear communication is required there; for two parties in a case to understand what is being said during the proceedings the use of roundabout indirect language is avoided – the courts believe in calling ‘a spade, a spade.’ Through the careful analysis of euphemisms, the study’s findings revealed that euphemisms have both positive and negative effects on language, including Tshivenḓa. Some of the positive effects of euphemisms revealed by this study include the ability to avoid directly naming what is deemed unpleasant; they make the language sound more
v
literary; and they allow people to discuss touchy or taboo subjects with ease. However, the findings also suggested that euphemisms may be disrespectful; they could hinder clear communication; they are deceptive; and they may lead to miscommunication and general confusion.
Based on the findings of the study, it is recommended that the use of euphemisms in Tshivenḓa language should be reinforced in all social domains in order to enhance politeness; preserve the public self-image of the participants in communicative exchanges; and facilitate harmonious interpersonal relationships. It is also recommended that further study be undertaken to identify other factors that may affect the use of euphemisms in Tshivenḓa from other perspectives.
Key concepts: Politeness; Euphemisms; Treadmill; Taboo; Face work

Parametrizace tváře pomocí videosekvence / Face parameterization using videosequenceLieskovský, Pavol January 2019 (has links)
This work deals with the problem of face parameterization from the video of a speaking person and estimating Parkinson’s disease and the progress of its symptoms based on face parameters. It describes the syntax and function of the program that was created within this work and solves the problem of face parameterization. The program formats the processed data into a time series of parameters in JSON format. From these data, a dataset was created, based on which artificial intelligence models were trained to predict Parkinson’s disease and the progress of its symptoms. The process of model training and their results are documented within this work.

Zell, Caroline, Domäng, Erika January 2021 (has links)

Investigation on how presentation attack detection can be used to increase security for face recognition as biometric identification : Improvements on traditional locking systemÖberg, Fredrik January 2021 (has links)
Biometric identification has already been applied to society today, as today’s mobile phones use fingerprints and other methods like iris and the face itself. With growth for technologies like computer vision, the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, The use of face recognition as a biometric identification on ordinary doors has become increasingly common. This thesis studies is looking into the possibility of replacing regular door locks with face recognition or supplement the locks to increase security by using a pre-trained state-of-the-art face recognition method based on a convolution neural network. A subsequent investigation concluded that a networks based face recognition are is highly vulnerable to attacks in the form of presentation attacks. This study investigates protection mechanisms against these forms of attack by developing a presentation attack detection and analyzing its performance. The obtained results from the proof of concept showed that local binary patterns histograms as a presentation attack detection could help the state of art face recognition to avoid attacks up to 88\% of the attacks the convolution neural network approved without the presentation attack detection. However, to replace traditional locks, more work must be done to detect more attacks in form of both higher percentage of attacks blocked by the system and the types of attack that can be done. Nevertheless, as a supplement face recognition represents a promising technology to supplement traditional door locks, enchaining their security by complementing the authorization with biometric authentication. So the main contributions is that by using simple older methods LBPH can help modern state of the art face regognition to detect presentation attacks according to the results of the tests. This study also worked to adapt this PAD to be suitable for low end edge devices to be able to adapt in an environment where modern solutions are used, which LBPH have.
