In the last years it has been observed an exponential growth in the offering of Internet-enabled distance courses, due to its advantages and features (decreased distribution and content updates costs, management of large groups of students, asynchronous and geographically independent learning) as well as its regulation and governmental support. However, the lack of effective mechanisms that assure user authentication in this sort of environment has been pointed out as a serious deficiency, both in the system logon and during user attendance in the course assignments. Currently, password based authentication still prevails. Nevertheless, studies have been carried out about possible biometric applications for Web authentication. With the popularization and resultant decreasing costs of biometric enabled devices, such as webcams, microphones and embedded fingerprint sensors, Biometrics is reconsidered as a secure and viable form of remote authentication of individuals for Web applications. Based on that, this work presents a distributed architecture for an e-Learning environment, by exploring the properties of a Web system for biometric authentication both in the system logon and in continuous monitoring, during the course attendance. For the analysis of this architecture, the performance of techniques for face recognition from video, captured on-line by a webcam in an Internet environment, is evaluated, simulating the natural interaction of an individual in an e-Learning system. For that, a private database was created, with 43 individuals browsing and interacting with Web pages. The results show that the methods analyzed, though consolidated in the literature, can be successfully applied in this kind of application, with recognition rates up to 97% in ideal conditions, with low execution times and with short amount of information transmitted between client and server, with templates sizes of about 30KB.

Estas
Assim, a tarefa
Stochastic methods offer a powerful tool for performing data compression and decomposition
of matrices. These methods use random sampling to identify a subspace that captures the
range of a matrix in an approximate way, preserving a part of its essential information. These
approaches compress the information enabling the resolution of practical problems efficiently.
This work computes a singular value decomposition (SVD) of a matrix using stochastic techniques.
This random SVD is employed in the task of face recognition. The face recognition is
based on the projection of images of faces on a feature space that best describes the variation of
known image faces. These features are known as eigenfaces because they are the eigenvectors
of a matrix constructed from a set of faces. This projection characterizes an individual face by a
weighted sum of eigenfaces. The task of recognizing a new face is to compare the weights of its
projection with the projection of the weights of known individuals. The principal components
analysis (PCA) is a widely used method for determining the eigenfaces. This provides the greatest
variability eigenfaces representing information from a set of faces. In this dissertation we
discuss the quality of eigenfaces obtained by a random SVD (which are the left singular vectors
of a matrix containing the images) by comparing the similarity with eigenfaces obtained
by PCA. We use two databases of images, with different sizes and various random sampling
applied on the matrix containing the images.

The features extraction method refers to the ability to extract features from images, reduce the dimensionality and generates the features vector. Given a query image, the goal of a features extraction system is to search the database and return the most similar to the query image according to a given criteria. Our research addresses the generation of features vectors of a recognition image system for human faces databases. A feature vector is a numeric representation of an image or part of it over its representative aspects. The feature vector is a n-dimensional vector organizing such values. This new image representation can be stored into a database and allow a fast image retrieval. An alternative for image characterization for a human face recognition system is the domain transform. The principal advantage of a transform is its effective characterization for their local image properties. In the past few years researches in applied mathematics and signal processing have developed practical wavelet methods for the multi scale representation and analysis of signals. These new tools differ from the traditional Fourier techniques by the way in which they localize the information in the time-frequency plane; in particular, they are capable of trading on type of resolution for the other, which makes them especially suitable for the analysis of non-stationary signals. The wavelet transform is a set basis function that represents signals in different frequency bands, each one with a resolution matching its scale. They have been successfully applied to image compression, enhancement, analysis, classification, characterization and retrieval. One privileged area of application where these properties have been found to be relevant is computer vision, especially human faces imaging. In this work we describe an approach to image recognition for human face databases focused on feature extraction based on multiresolution wavelets decomposition, taking advantage of Biorthogonal, Reverse Biorthogonal, Symlet, Coiflet, Daubechies and Haar. They were tried in joint the techniques together the PCA (Principal Component Analysis) and IMPCA (Image Principal Component Analysis)

Investigação biométrica em imagens digitais para detecção de faces humanas através da proporção divina / Biometric investigation in digital images for the detection of human faces by divine proportionJunior Leal do Prado 23 December 2004 (has links)
The increase of recognition systems in the contemporary world has demanded robust and agile detection processes. From teleconference systems to security and monitoring mechanisms, the detection and recognition of people have became constantly used and applied. In attempt to search for alternative ways to solve both detection and recognition problems, this work proposes the utilization of biometric measures, taken in digital image of human faces. From the study of such measures, its possible to verify face proportions, especially the divine proportion, which could allows, in the future, to implement the detection and/or recognition algorithms that utilize such proportions. Due to small amount of scientific publications that use the divine proportion as a way of detection and/or recognition in image processing, this investigation contributes with some steps in this direction

The aim of this thesis is to devise a tool allowing us to think about religion in such a way as to preserve the advancements of the authors conceptualizing it through the notion of frontier while taking in greater consideration the understandings of the actors who practise it. To this end, I adapt Danielle Juteau’s (2015) concept of two-sided frontier to conceive religion as a category formed by the relationship between an Us and an Other—the external side—as well as by the interpretations that individuals make of their own religious practices—the internal side. To grasp this internal side, I argue that the current attempts to define religion are inadequate and that it’s more useful to understand it as a form of social practices which acquire (religious) meaning by their insertion into narratives. This operation being a reaction to traumatic events, I show that religion can be thought, from the frontier’s internal side, as a particular set of historically located narratives of which individuals have the momentary impression that they’re shared. Thus, to be understood, these narratives have to be replaced in the context of their emergence. In Europe, that means to analyze the first attempts to impose an understanding of religion to every individual at the turn of the modern age, while, in the rest of the world, it means instead to analyze the exportation of these narratives into the colonial empires.

Experiment and Simulation of Autoignition in Jet Flames and its Relevance to Flame Stabilization and StructureAl-Noman, Saeed M. 06 1900 (has links)
Autoignition characteristics of pre-vaporized iso-octane, primary reference fuels, gasolines, and dimethyl ether (DME) have been investigated experimentally in a coflow with elevated temperature of air. With the coflow air at relatively low initial temperatures below autoignition temperature Tauto, an external ignition source was required to stabilize the flame. Non-autoignited lifted flames had tribrachial edge structures and their liftoff heights correlated well with the jet velocity scaled by the stoichiometric laminar burning velocity, indicating the importance of the edge propagation speed on flame stabilization balanced with local flow velocity. At high initial temperatures over Tauto, the autoignited flames were stabilized without requiring an external ignition source. The autoignited lifted flames exhibited either tribrachial edge structures or Mild combustion behaviors depending on the level of fuel dilution.
For the iso-octane and n-heptane fuels, two distinct transition behaviors were observed in the autoignition regime from a nozzle-attached flame to a lifted tribrachial-edge flame and then a sudden transition to lifted Mild combustion as the jet velocity increased at a certain fuel dilution level. The liftoff data of the autoignited flames with tribrachial edges were analyzed based on calculated ignition delay times for the pre-vaporized fuels. Analysis of the experimental data suggested that ignition delay time may be much less sensitive to initial temperature under atmospheric pressure conditions as compared with predictions. For the gasoline fuels for advanced combustion engines (FACEs), and primary reference fuels (PRFs), autoignited liftoff data were correlated with Research Octane Number and Cetane Number.
For the DME fuel, planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) of formaldehyde (CH2O) and CH* chemiluminescence were visualized qualitatively. In the autoignition regime for both tribrachial structure and mild combustion, formaldehyde were found mainly between the fuel nozzle and the lifted flame edge. On the other hand, they were formed just prior to the flame edge for the non-autoignited lifted flames. The effect of fuel pyrolysis and partial oxidation were found to be important in explaining autoignited liftoff heights, especially in the Mild combustion regime.
Flame structures of autoignited flames were investigated numerically for syngas (CO/H2) and methane fuels. The simulations of syngas fuel accounting for the differential diffusion have been performed by adopting several kinetic mechanisms to test the models ability in predicting the flame behaviors observed previously. The results agreed well with the observed nozzle-attached flame characteristics in case of non-autoignited flames. For autoignited lifted flames in high temperature regime, a unique autoignition behavior can be predicted having HO2 and H2O2 radicals in a broad region between the nozzle and stabilized lifted flame edge.
Autoignition characteristics of laminar nonpremixed methane jet flames in high-
temperature coflow air were studied numerically. Several flame configurations were investigated by varying the initial temperature and fuel mole fraction. Characteristics of chemical kinetics structures for autoignited lifted flames were discussed based on the kinetic structures of homogeneous autoignition and flame propagation of premixed mixtures. Results showed that for autoignited lifted flame with tribrachial structure, a transition from autoignition to flame propagation modes occurs for reasonably stoichiometric mixtures. Characteristics of Mild combustion can be treated as an autoignited lean premixed lifted flame. Transition behavior from Mild combustion to a nozzle-attached flame was also investigated by increasing the fuel mole fraction.

Resurrection of Our Ancestors : 3D face reconstruction of historical images and its use in face recognitionLekander, Moa Li January 2023 (has links)
In the field of face recognition one challenge is to recognize individuals in photographs taken of the person in profile. In this project it was investigated whether 3D face reconstructions could improve the face recognition results in these cases. Images used in the experiments were historical images of persons who lived in Stockholm during the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries. Additionally, face frontalization algorithms were applied to images taken in profile-view of the person to investigate if this idea could improve the results of 3D face reconstruction of images in profile-view. The results of the experiments showed that using 3D face reconstructions did not improve the results of face recognition. However, in most cases the individuals in the 3D face reconstructions could be recognized. Furthermore, experiments also showed that face frontalization did not improve the results of the 3D face reconstructions of images taken in profile angle. Aside from these results, the thesis demonstrates a, to the best of our knowledge, new approach to evaluate 3D face reconstruction results by using face recognition.
