The role of context in infant preference for father's voice

Ward, Cynthia D. 04 March 2009 (has links)
The present study was designed to investigate whether infants prefer their fathers’ voices over an unfamiliar male voice within the context of normal father-infant interaction, i.e., infant-directed (ID) speech. Twenty Caucasian male and female four-month-olds were tested in a visual-fixation preference procedure. Attentional preference was measured by the amount of time the infants watched a visual stimulus. It was found that infants did not show greater attentional or affective responsiveness to paternal ID over unfamiliar male ID speech samples. However, mothers and fathers appear to be very similar in their perception of father-infant interaction. According to these results, four-month-olds do not prefer their fathers’ voices to that of an unfamiliar male. This finding contrast sharply with the literature on maternal voice preference. The data was interpreted as supporting the hypothesis that multimodal stimulus cues are necessary for paternal voice recognition in infancy. / Master of Science

Concomitantly, feminist women, pro-feminism men and homosexuals struggles and accomplishments have been emphasizing the discussions and reflections on masculinity and parenthood. Through Critical Communicative Methodology, methodological-theoretical reference in which the reality is perceived as a construction of meanings intersubjectively reached through individuals able to recur to language and action and is based on the egalitarian dialog between the participants of the research and researchers that interact and communicate in order to reach an understanding. The participants are male Community Health Agents who are also parents and the main goal was to identify which elements of their speeches could promote the construction of new parenthood standards related to the health of mother-child binomial during the pregnancy, birth and post-birth periods and which elements set a limit to such construction. Such elements arise from aspects of their personal and professional lives and from the community where they live and work. Two data collection methods were used: communicative report and communicative discussion group. The data analysis was performed along with the participants that are understood as capable to interpret differently from the researcher yet in a different level of understanding. Besides the analysis run on the promoter and limiter elements, it was considered, for the final analysis, the categories system and life s world. The results indicate that professionals, health institutions, all knowledge acquisition regarding health and the existence of laws/directives figure as essential to determine a broader paternal care. Another relevant aspect concerns to the strength of genre socializing process on the determination of men s spot on the familiar day-by-day perpetuating social constructions that attribute its detachment of these moments and feelings of fear and unpreparedness to handle the baby. However, there were reports of paternal experiences that exceeded such traditional determinations highlighted by a broad view of parenthood, of the dialog between family members, of the relationship maintained by the couple and of the existence of favorable support contexts. Thus, we concluded there is a need to develop researches and social and educational spaces that could allow men/fathers to dialog collectively and to create successful strategies for the transformation of the paternal reality on the recent context in order to lead it to their inclusion.

A qualitative study on life experiences reported by fathers of female adolescents diagnosed with an eating disorder in a Brazilian public outpatient service

Garcia Junior, Celso, 1969- 26 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Egberto Ribeiro Turato / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Ciências Médicas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-26T23:55:56Z (GMT). The present study aimed to understand life events reported by fathers of female adolescents with eating disorders (ED) in outpatient treatment and understand fathers¿ perceptions about the impact of having a daughter with an ED, since the symptoms onset. The Clinical-Qualitative method was used, through in-depth semi-structured interviews, using an intentional sample, closed by saturation criterion. Twelve participants were interviewed at the outpatient psychiatry unit of the Clinical Teaching Hospital at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), where Eating Disorders¿ Clinical and Research Program (GETA) activities are developed. Ethical procedures were taken following the ethical standards established by the National Council of Health. Data analysis was performed through the qualitative content analysis of the fully transcribed interviews and categorization. Peer-reviewers members from the Laboratory of Clinical-Qualitative Research (UNICAMP) validated the emerging categories, as also the attendees of national and international conferences where the results were presented. The findings made it possible to understand that the participants were adrift in their childhood and adolescence, devastated by child labor. They desperately sought attention without achieving a secure, affective contact with their affectively distant, hardworking father. These individuals showed difficulties in dealing adequately with situations of anguish and conflict. They felt distant from their daughters and had the sensation of impotence when faced with their daughter¿ problems. They minimized the early ED symptoms but feelings of sadness, frustration, fear of the daughter¿s death, self-guilty, powerlessness and helpless emerged, as the eating symptoms worsened. The fathers could recognize treatment benefits and perceived that they got able to improve the relationship with their daughter. Apparently, ED has functioned as a path to an improvement of the father-daughter relationship quality. Our findings can contribute to the expansion of knowledge in the area and may have application in improving clinical practice in the field of ED / Doutorado / Saude Mental / Doutor em Ciências Médicas
