Activative Fathering, Children's Self-Regulation, and Social SkillsJanuary 2014 (has links)
abstract: This study investigated father-child Activation Theory and the impact of activative fathering on children's dysregulation and social skills. The sample followed 145 families of typically developing children across ages 4 to 6. Fathering and mothering behaviors were coded via naturalistic observations at child age 4, children's dysregulation was coded during a laboratory puzzle task at age 5, and children's social skills were rated by parents and teachers at age 6. Results found support for a constellation of activative fathering behaviors unique to father-child interactions. Activative fathering, net of mothering behaviors, predicted decreased behavioral dysregulation one year later. Support was not found for moderation of the relation between activative fathering and children's dysregulation by paternal warmth, nor was support found for children's dysregulation as a mediator of the relation between activative fathering and children's social skills. These results suggest that parenting elements of father-child activation are unique to fathering and may be more broadly observable in naturalistic contexts not limited to play activities alone. Additionally, activative fathering appears to uniquely influence children's self-regulatory abilities above and beyond identical mothering behavior. In the present work, paternal warmth was not a necessary for activative fathering to positively contribute to children's regulatory abilities nor did children's dysregulation link activative fathering to social skills. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Psychology 2014

A father's supportive presence: Understanding how fathers influence children's developmental outcomesSiller, Christina 01 January 2012 (has links)
The present study focuses on how a father's supportive presence during interactions with his child influences his/her social outcomes in adolescence. Ethological theories of attachment provide a theoretical basis for the investigation of father-child interactions because they provide us with an explanation regarding how and why child-caregiver relationships function to influence a child's development and later social functioning. Structural equation modeling was used to construct a theoretical model by which fathering behaviors influence later psychosocial outcomes, particularly impulse control and risky behaviors during adolescence. For boys, supportive mothering behaviors had a greater influence on impulse control than supportive fathering behaviors. The opposite was true for girls. For girls, supportive fathering behaviors had a greater influence on impulse control than supportive mothering behaviors. Impulse control served a partial mediating effect between supportive parenting behaviors and risk-taking behaviors. For sons, supportive mothering behaviors had a significant positive impact on impulse control during adolescence. Conversely, for daughters, supportive fathering behaviors—but not supportive mothering behaviors—had a significant positive impact on impulse control during adolescence. In fact, supportive mothering behaviors had an insignificant effect on daughters' impulse control during adolescence,

The role of the father as a companion to the wife during the birth processPerdomini, Fernanda Rosa Indriunas January 2010 (has links)
This is a qualitative study – case study – whose objectives were determining the role of the father, as a companion to the wife during delivery, the factors which contribute for the participation of the father in the birth process and the knowledge this father has about the Companion Law. There were 24 fathers who were present during labor and delivery processes, accompanying their wives at the Obstetrical Center from the Porto Alegre Clinics Hospital. Information was obtained by participative observation and semi-structured interviews and was submitted to content analysis (thematic type). The themes found were: the experience of being a companion (which regards the presence and the meaning of living the child’s birth) and the father participation (which regards the indication of the factors that contributed to his participation and the obstacles that prevented him from participating). The findings of this study showed that the fathers understand that being present, caring and saying supportive words is part of their role as a companion at this moment. The fathers believe that the experience of living their child’s birth, independent from the number of births which may have already been experienced, is a unique event, an inexplicable moment, full of magic and pure love. These fathers took the option of participating in their child’s birth due to many factors: not having had the opportunity of having such an experience before, social pressure, curiosity and the belief that this is the father’s role. The study has also highlighted that fathers lack preparation and information about the physiological changes the woman goes through during labor, about the technology and medicines used in this period, as well as about the possibility of accompanying this moment. Even though these fathers have accompanied their wives during labor, some of them did not feel well informed about the Companion Law (just two of them knew about it). Some fathers have also informed that they could not participate in the prenatal care; others, who have participated in it, did not receive suitable information from the health care professionals about the birth process. Thus, in this study, fathers have showed that they enjoy being present at the moment of their child’s birth. They have felt, however, that they were unprepared and impotent to face the woman’s needs during labor. In this way, the study suggests that it is necessary to reformulate the procedures referring to the attention given to the couple during prenatal care and the inclusion of the father as a participative and active individual during the birth process. Toward a Better Understanding of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury in University Students: Examining Associations with Parent-Child Relationships, Emotion Regulation Difficulties, and Contextual Risk FactorsGuérin-Marion, Camille 25 May 2022 (has links)
Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is increasingly understood as representing a public health concern and a behavioral marker of emotional and psychological distress among young people. NSSI is prevalent during the period of young adulthood, including among emerging adults pursuing a university education, yet the vulnerability factors associated with NSSI in this population merit more in-depth and contextualized investigation. The current dissertation's overarching objective was to better understand the risk context surrounding university students' engagement in NSSI. Using a sample of 2,579 students (75.2% female; Mage=18.97; SDage=1.54), Study 1 first explored the roles of parental (mother and father pressure) and intrapersonal (emotion dysregulation, academic coping, perfectionism subtypes) risk factors in university students’ likelihood and frequency of engagement in NSSI in the past year. An integrated latent structural equation model revealed that higher levels of perceived mother and father pressure were associated with a greater likelihood of past-year NSSI engagement in the university student sample. Among intrapersonal risk factors, only emotion dysregulation was found to be associated with higher NSSI likelihood and frequency. Building upon these results, Study 2 sought to narrow in further on understanding the emotion regulation profiles of university students with a past-year history of NSSI. Using a person-centered statistical approach, university students who reported having engaged in NSSI within the past year (n = 479; 83.8% female; Mage = 18.77; SDage = 1.43) were classified into latent profiles based on their self-perceived difficulties in regulating both positive and negative emotions. Independent samples of students who had a past history of NSSI but had not self-injured within the previous year (n = 439; 82.9% females; Mage = 19.03, SDage = 1.62) and who had no history of NSSI (n = 1551; 69.9% females; Mage = 19.02, SDage = 1.55) were included as comparison groups. Latent cluster analyses uncovered three emotion regulation profiles within the NSSI sample - the Average Difficulties (47.4%), Dysregulated (33.0%), and Low Difficulties (19.6%) profiles - each of which differed meaningfully from both comparison samples on mean levels of emotion regulation difficulties. Students across the three profiles also differed in their self-reported experiences with parents, particularly with fathers (perceived pressure, antipathy, unresolved attachment, psychological control), and in the extent to which they felt alienated from parents. Lastly, students across profiles differed in the frequency, methods, functions, and addictive properties of their NSSI. Taken together, findings from the current dissertation expanded our awareness of vulnerability factors for NSSI that have historically been understudied (e.g., parental pressure, father-child relationships, dysregulated positive emotions), while also bringing into focus the notion that even well-established NSSI risk factors (emotion regulation difficulties) can manifest quite heterogeneously amongst university students with a history of self-injurious behavior.

There is increasing evidence that the quality of parent-child relationships is important for the development of young children’s executive functioning (EF). However, studies have focused on samples of either mother-child or father-child dyads, not both. The present master’s thesis includes an empirical article pursuing two aims. First, the article examined the unique contributions of the quality of mothers’ and fathers’ interactions with their toddlers to the prediction of children’s subsequent EF in kindergarten. Second, the article investigated the interactive effects of mother-child and father-child relationships. The sample included 46 families. The quality of mother-child and father-child interactions was assessed independently during separate interactive sequences at 18 months. In kindergarten, child EF problems were reported by their teachers with the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function. Results indicated that kindergarteners who had higher-quality interactions with their fathers in toddlerhood were considered by their teachers to present fewer EF problems in everyday school situations. This suggests that father-child relationships may be an important factor to consider regarding the development of EF in children. Theoretical and empirical implications as well as practical implications, particularly for teachers, are discussed at the conclusion of this master’s thesis.
