The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of the use of pig slurry as fertilizer on the productivity of a willow plantation, while evaluating the risk of a negative impact on the environment. We evaluated plant response to increasing slurry amounts and compared this response to the effect of mineral fertilization. We also verified the impact of slurry on soil nutritional content as well as on nitrate and phosphorus concentrations in the soil. Although slurry nitrogen was less efficient than mineral fertilizer, the results of our study show that slurry constitutes an effective fertilizer for willow plantations. In fact, yields over two years on plots that received increasing amounts of slurry were on the order of 30.0 to 32.9 t/ha. We observed an increase in soil levels of nitrates, copper and zinc as a function of increasing slurry amounts. These levels actually decreased during the second growing season, possibly due to uptake by the willows. Springtime concentrations of water in lysimeters indicated that the maximum amount of slurry tested in our experiments was accompanied by a certain risk of nitrates leaching into the soil. We did not analyze the soil solution of plots fertilized with lower amounts of slurry, but it seems likely that these nitrate concentrations would have had a lower risk of leaching while still ensuring considerable productivity.

Molecular biodiversity of microbial communities in polluted soils and their role in soil phytoremediationHassan, Saad El Din 07 1900 (has links)
Trace metals (TM) are continually world-wide added to soils through the intensive use of mineral fertilizers and agriculture chemicals, together with industrial and other activities generating toxic wastes. Problems associated with metal-contaminated soil exists because TM are not biodegradable. TM that accumulate in soils affect the biodiversity of soil microorganisms.
Nitrogen (N) fertilization is a widespread practice to increase soil fertility and crop production. However, the long-term use of N fertilization causes many detrimental effects in the environment. The intensive use of N fertilization increase TM input in soils, and in extreme cases, N fertilization result in TM pollution of the surrounding soil and water and increase TM concentration in plant tissues. In addition, the long-term use of N fertilizers changes and declines the biodiversity of above and underground ecosystems.
The community structure of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) was investigated in TM contaminated and long-term N fertilized soils. In addition, the role of different AMF species in TM uptake or sequestration was investigated.
In the first experiment, AMF community structure was analyzed from non-contaminated and TM contaminated sites. We found the diversity of native AMF was lower in soils and plant roots harvested from TM polluted soils than from unpolluted soils. We also found that the community structure of AMF was modified by TM contamination. Some AMF ribotypes were more often associated with TM contaminated sites, other ribotypes with uncontaminated sites, while still other ribotypes were found both in polluted and unpolluted soils.
In the second experiment, the effect of different organic and mineral N fertilization on AMF community structure was investigated. Variation in root-colonizing AMF community structure was observed in both organic and mineral fertilization. Some AMF ribotypes were more affiliated to organic fertilization and other to mineral fertilization. In addition, mineral fertilization reduced AMF ribotypes number while organic fertilization increased AMF ribotypes number. In this experiment, it was demonstrated that change in root-colonizing AMF community structure had a significant effect on plant productivity.
In the third experiment, the role of different AMF species (G. irregulare and G. mosseae) in TM uptake by sunflower plants grown in soil amended with three different Cd levels was evaluated. It was demonstrated that AMF species differentially affected TM uptake or sequestration by sunflower plants. This experiment supported a different effect of AMF in TM uptake based on Cd concentration in soil and the AMF species involved.
Our research demonstrated that TM and N fertilization affected and shifted AMF community structure within roots and soils. It was shown that change in root-colonizing AMF community structure significantly affected plant productivity. In this study, it was showed that the AMF species G. irregulare was recorded in all uncontaminated sites while G. mosseae was the most abundant AMF species in TM contaminated sites. Therefore, the role of G. irregulare and G. mosseae in Cd uptake by sunflower plants grown in soils amended with three different Cd levels was investigated. The results indicated that AMF species mediate different mechanisms to alleviate TM toxicity in host plants, depending on AMF species and soil Cd level involved. We hypothesize that G. irregulare is a potentially important species for Cd phytoextration processes, while G. mosseae might be a suitable candidate for Cd and Zn phytostabilization processes.

Oxygen and the ovarian follicle : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Bioprocess Engineering at Massey University, Palmerston North, New ZealandRedding, Gabe Peter January 2007 (has links)
The role oxygen plays in the developing ovarian follicle is of interest not only to the field of developmental biology but also to in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) technologists, as oxygenation of the oocyte is considered to be a potential determinant of oocyte competence. Oxygen transport through the developing ovarian follicle, and practical aspects of the analysis of oxygen in human follicular fluid were investigated in this work. Mathematical modelling of oxygen transport in the pre-antral, and antrallpreovulatory follicle revealed a number of interesting findings, Contrary to previous conclusions (Gosden & Byatt-Smith, 1986), oxygen can reach the oocyte in the small pre-antral follicle. Improved estimates of diffusion coefficients through the granulosa cell layer and the inclusion of fluid voidage in this layer showed that oxygen can also reach the oocyte in large pre-antral follicles. The amount of oxygen that reaches the oocyte in the pre-antral follicle is a function of its size and degree of vascularisation. Symmetrically distributed vascularisation is superior in achieving a well oxygenated follicle. However, the large pre-antral follicle will eventually reach a size beyond which it cannot grow without anoxic regions developing. The size at which this occurs is consistent with the size at which antrum formation is observed in human follicles. The model predicts that the follicle can avoid an anoxic state through antrum formation, and shows that the follicle develops in a way that is consistent with overcoming mass transport limitations. The oxygen status of the follicle during the antrallpre-ovulatory phase of growth requires that the volume of granulosa cells be balanced by the volume of follicular fluid. Further predictions suggest that oocyte respiration becomes sub-maximal at follicular fluid volumes below approximately 4m1, vascularisation levels below 38%, or fluid i dissolved oxygen levels below 5.1 ~01%. These values are consistent with observations in the literature. It was also shown that the measurement of follicular fluid dissolved oxygen levels could provide a simple measure of the respiratory status of the oocyte, and this may be superior to the measurement of follicular vascularisation which requires knowledge of more parameters. Methodology for the analysis of follicular fluid oxygen solubility and diffusivity was developed using a Clark oxygen electrode. Analysis of these parameters showed that they are similar to human plasma, and allowed the predictive uncertainty of the model to be reduced. Experimental studies into the effects of IVF aspiration on follicular fluid were carried out. Aspiration results in significant changes in the properties of follicular fluid. Dissolved oxygen levels rose 5 * 2 vol%, pH increased by 0.04 * 0.01 pH units, and temperature dropped by 7.7 * 1.3 "C. Mathematical modelling of blood contaminated follicular fluid also showed that contamination results in significant changes in the dissolved oxygen of the fluid. This suggests that if the composition of follicular fluid is to be determined (particularly dissolved oxygen), sampling andlor measurement of fluid must take place before the collection vial of the aspiration kit, and blood contamination must be eliminated. Based on this result, the design and testing of devices capable of reliable sampling andlor rneasurement of oxygen levels of follicular fluid was considered. This presents a continuing challenge, including the integration of routine follicular fluid oxygen measurement into clinical practice.

The effect of fertilising pinus radiata stands at mid rotation age in the Western Cape Province on leaf area, growth efficiency and stand productivityBadenhorst, Johannes Jurie 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScFor (Forest and Wood Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Mid rotation fertiliser application is generally practised in forestry to enhance nutrient availability in areas were soils are impoverished and do not provide sufficient nutrients for high productivity. Generally speaking there is great potential for mid rotation fertiliser in pine plantations, but stand and site characteristics such as water availability, soil depth, stand density and available nutrients need to be considered before fertiliser treatments are implemented. Foliar nutrient analyses were used to estimate nutrient availability. These levels were measured throughout the study and were used to implement specific fertiliser treatments that would boost nutrient availability. Treatments consisted of an unfertilised control, a single fertiliser application (1F) and two fertiliser applications over two consecutive years (2F). Leaf area index (LAI) and stem volume increment were measured in order to evaluate its influence on growth efficiency. LAI was estimated using the gap fraction method with the use of a ceptometer. Volume increment was calculated with diameter and height measurements. Basal area was calculated by means of diameter measurements. These growth responses were used to determine the effect of increased nutrient availability and although increases were found in LAI, volume increment, basal area increment and growth efficiency, none were significant. The lack of significance may be due to relatively large variations in other factors such as stand density and initial volume of the experimental plots. The 18 month monitoring period apparently did not allow complete reaction time to increased nutrient availability and limited our understanding of the responses somewhat. Despite this, the magnitude of some growth responses was large as nutrient ratios in the foliage increased to levels within the norms range. Increases in current annual volume increment (CAI) of 3.48 m3 ha-1 a-1 and 3.62 m3 ha-1 a-1 in 1F plots at Grabouw and La Motte plantations indicated that it may be economically feasible to fertilise at mid rotation age as the NPV and IRR increased over a projected 25 year rotation. The Grabouw site had the most significant response with regards to CAI in 2F treatment with a mean volume increment of 5.43 m3 ha-1 a-1. The mechanism of the response was examined further by taking water availability and soil characteristics into account. The seasonal climatic effect (length of the moisture growing season) had a significant influence on the response to fertilisation.

Interdependence, responsibility and partnership : a German perspective on the Northern Local Church in her international contextSchmidt, Jörg 05 1900 (has links)
Text in English / This thesis is an attempt to investigate how local churches (re)define their international orientation in response to the shockwaves of globalisation and their interpretation of the signs of the times. The analysis is guided by the key dimensions of interdependence, responsibility, and partnership. The local church is expected to have reached an increasing awareness of interdependence in her international relationships by the emergence of the postmodern systemic paradigm as never before in the history of the ecumenical movement. Consequently, this results in a sense of responsibility developing directly from a prophetic reading and an interpretation of the signs of the times as well as in a receptivity to be fertilised by international impulses. The local church is perceived by both individual Christians and pastors as direct platform for international responsibility. The wounds of the world, the needy and the suffering are suggested as inviting primary responses of local churches in the North. International church partnerships are investigated as practical attempts to live out interdependent relationships, to translate the sense of responsibility into action, and to receive fertilisation from the partner churches. Qualitative case studies from Reformed, United (Lutheran/Reformed) and Free churches present a status analysis of churches regarding the points under discussion.
The tendency is observed that pastors inc~easingly look for ways alternative to the old ecumenical structures, which are characterised by rich/poor and donor/recipient relationships, thus operating their churches with free initiative and association.
Studies regularly narrow down topics to interdependence, postmodernism, development, development politics, church development services, international partnerships, ecumenical learning, etc. Often recommendations for action are made based on the one single area of research presented. In this study, however, it is argued that pastors and churches do not derive their decisions and programmes from considerations of one single area, but they consider all these areas together.
Soil C sequestration reduces the effects of climate change, improves soil quality and food security. Soil organic matter (SOM) could be enhanced by introduction of ley grassland into the cropping cycle. The objective of this PhD thesis was to evaluate the effect of management practices of ley grassland on the quantity, composition and stabilization processes of SOM and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). My data showed legacy effects of duration and fertilization of the temporary grassland phase on SOM after 3 years of cropping. The duration of grassland phase influenced the quantity and composition of the microbial biomass as well as the nature of SOM. N fertilization during the grassland phase is necessary for soil C sequestration in soil without increasing GHG emissions. To replace mineral N fertilization, legumes may be used in forage production systems. Consequently, I was interested in the effect of introduction of lucerne on C, N and P forms in soils under lucerne-grass mixtures. My results indicate similar soil C stocks under mixtures and grass monocultures, despite the high productivity of lucerne. Molecular biomarkers indicated that the introduction of lucerne in grassland influenced the degradation of the SOM more than its stabilization. Moreover, the presence of lucerne influenced P forms in soils under mixtures. In conclusion, the introduction of ley grasslands into cropping cycles requires careful evaluation of the management practices in order to optimize C storage, GHG emissions and N fertilizer use.

“Thanks to a good fairy you were born” : An intersectional feminist analysis of ovum donation advertising found in the public space in BarcelonaTasa-Vinyals, Elisabet January 2017 (has links)
Gamete donors are actively searched by companies dedicated to assisted reproduction in the Spanish State, and advertising is not only legal but rather common. This thesis provides an overview of the main themes that arise from the analysis of mostly visual materials used to promote ovum donation in public spaces in Barcelona, and critically links them to current debates in intersectional feminist cultural studies of technoscience, bodily theory and visual studies. Conceptual and affective tensions between characterisations of women’s bodies, reproductive function and desires are identified and brought forward in terms that imply tropes of sacralisation, reification of cells/organs/tissues, and fragmentation of the bodily reality. It is argued that egg donation advertisements use an imagery that deeply connects with practices well rooted in Western biomedical traditions when it comes to female bodies, physiology and reproductive function, and that such practices are to be understood against the backdrop of neoliberalism. The analysis supports the idea that the publicity discourse of the assisted reproduction industry in Spain actively engages in a legitimation of the desire of biological parenthood as a right, in ways that value lives conceived in different circumstances and geopolitical contexts in radically different ways, and that can be interpreted as paving the way to prosurrogacy and/or eugenic positions. Future research is encouraged and directed towards exploring issues of agency, particularly in vulnerable groups such as migrant, poor, uneducated or racialised women. Further research is needed in order to build the foundations of a feminist ethical reflection on reproductive technologies and particularly of ovum donation.

Biodiversité et gestion des écosystèmes prairiaux en Franche-Comté / Biodiversity and agricultural management of grassland systems in Franche-ComtéMauchamp, Leslie 23 September 2014 (has links)
Grassland ecosystems are submitted to human pressure, especially due to agricultural management, preventing their natural succession toward the forest. However, when this pressure become too important, it could lead to a decrease of the diversity of plant communities (especially primary and secondary consumers) and of all communities that depend on them. As biodiversity is recognized to play an important role in the realization of ecosystem functions and services that benefit to human societies every day, important anthropic pressures could alter the maintaining of these services. In order to provide complementary information on the response of plant communities to anthropogenic factors, it is necessary to take into account the complexity of biodiversity, especially by including the various taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional facets of diversity. In addition, the spatial scale has to be taken into account, by comparing alpha (intra-site), beta (inter-site) components of the gamma diversity of a given parcel or region:.In this project, we especially focused on the complementarity of these approaches to diversity in order to assess the response of plant communities of the French Jura Mountains to agricultural practices used in this area. The production of PDO cheese, and especially the Comté cheese, offers an original framework for such investigations as the existence of this production is associated to strict regulations imposed to farmers for the management of their grassland systems. We studied the vegetation of 48 grasslands, split according to an altitudinal gradient (First Plateau, Second Plateau, High Range) by using an original multi-scale sampling design with plot sizes of 0.01, 1, 10 and 1000 m². The agricultural practices used on these 48 parcels have also been recorded by submitting questionnaires to farmers. In addition, we collected data on soil conditions in each parcel, including soil depth and physico-chemical analyses performed on 0 – 10 cm superficial soil samples.[...]The comparison of the species composition of 150 phytosociological relevés recorded in the 1990’s and repeated in 2012 reveals important changes in the floristic composition of grasslands. The general trend observed for the overall set of relevé suggests that contemporary communities are more adapted to frequent and/or intense defoliations, have a higher pastoral value and indicate a higher level of nutrient content in the soil. We also record differences in phylogenetic diversity values between the two sessions of relevés (while the taxonomic diversity of Simpson do not change) and so show that a loss of phylogenetic lineages among time.[...]The accumulation of phosphorous in the soil, associated to increasing nitrogen supply, especially in the form of inorganic fertilizers, can partly explain this trend. Even though we do not record any significant reduction of taxonomic diversity, the functional changes already observed suggest that the diversity could potentially decrease in the future.[...]

Pre-implantation and pre-natal selection of offspring : can there be a duty to select against disability?Williams, Nicola Jane January 2015 (has links)
The question of whether there might be a moral obligation to select against disability in our offspring has received considerable attention and attracted great controversy within both the philosophical community and beyond over the last couple of decades. Within this thesis I examine this question, taking as a basis for discussion the view that prospective parents should be formally free to choose whether or not to select against disability in their offspring in the absence of adequate justifying reasons to the contrary. I then move on to examine and outline arguments that suggest variously and for a plethora of different reasons that selection against disability should be condemned morally or required. After this is done and it is noted that the sheer volume of different positions and arguments requires a more specific focus I, in my thesis articles take what I view to be the strongest of moral reasons, person-affecting reasons, and look to the question of whether it is possible ground a moral obligation to select against disability in our offspring in the person affecting harms that our reproductive choices might produce. In the first paper I ask whether the non- identity problem really poses such an insurmountable obstacle to the claim that to select against disability may harm those that are created as a result of our selection choices. This leads to the conclusion that on certain accounts of personal identity over time and trans-world identity it is possible to determine harm in a number of previously non-identity cases of which the selection against disability case is one. In the second paper I broaden my focus slightly by looking to the possible harms that our procreative choices might impose on others than the children we may create: ourselves, our existing dependents and existing members of society. In doing this it is shown that our reproductive choices do, at least in societies with advanced social and medical welfare systems, have the potential to impose significant burdens on others. However, whilst this is so, it is also demonstrated that this is not necessarily a decisive reason to condemn a reproductive choice to select for or to fail to select against disability in our offspring. In my final paper I take a slightly different approach, focusing less on the question of whether there should be a moral obligation to select against disability in our offspring and more on the question of whether there should exist a legal imperative to do so. Taking as a basis a liberal approach to the moral limits of law I suggest that impingements on individual liberty may only be justified when it can be shown that our reproductive choices cause significant harms or offence to others, I ask whether the recent insertion into English and Welsh Law of a prohibition on selection for disability can be justified. In line with the findings of the previous two papers which are far from conclusive and by examining the reasons given in legal and policy documents in England and Wales relating to this prohibition I suggest that as it stands such a prohibition cannot be justified. This ultimately leads to a rather unsatisfying – but perhaps inevitable, in light of the messy nature of reproduction – conclusion: It is possible to discuss the ethics of selection against and for disability on person-affecting accounts of morality and to discuss the matter in this way offers sensitive and sensible prescriptions. However, such discussions turn out to be, in virtue of the many competing claims of those affected by reproductive decisions and policy, far more complex than might be assumed and do not fit neatly with the commonly held moral intuition that it is always morally preferable to select against disability in our offspring.

Thanks to information technologies and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), precision agriculture is refining the scale of observation and intervention, from the field to the individual plant. Remote sensing, in particular through satellite imagery, has also made it possible to monitor the crop dynamics, with increasing time frequency and spatial resolution.
Crop vigor is a crucial parameter allowing the optimization of inputs, and consequently economic and environmental benefits. Several ways to estimate crop vigor are possible. For a row crop such as corn (Zea Mays L.), aboveground biomass has been favored and will serve as a proxy for vigor.
Our study is based on the hypothesis that the recent advent of agricultural UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) will pave the way for a better estimation of crop vigor. We assume that the flexibility of the UAV combined with the very high spatial resolution of their images will allow a more accurate monitoring of crop vigor, both in space and time – conditions which are critical for the deployment of precision agriculture.
Research over the past 15 years has relied on the UAV to collect images of very high spatial resolution. However, the processing of those images is mainly based on vegetation indices, especially the NDVI. Several questions arise from the above observations:
– Is the use of NDVI the most efficient way to exploit the spatial resolution of UAV images? If not, is there a better way to exploit this imagery?
– How to respond to time and logistical constraints in the image processing so that it is ultimately adopted by farmers?
– Since UAV-borne sensors can be oriented quite freely, what are the effects of the acquisition angles on the results?
First, we assessed the relevance of the traditional approach which uses the NDVI index to determine crop parameters. To do that, we compared the UAV platform with the GreenSeeker proximal sensor. The results showed that the UAV is less efficient than the GreenSeeker in estimating corn biomass.
We thus moved away from the traditional approach and opted for a method extracting the apparent leaf area, through computer vision techniques applied to RGB images. This method took advantage of the very high spatial resolution offered by UAV images and produced a robust proxy for corn biomass, at the surface (per square meter) and row levels.
We also found that the results were not affected by the acquisition angles of the images (nadir and oblique). Therefore, this research opens the perspective to UAV applications in precision agriculture, for the estimation of vigor and other fundamental parameters used in input optimization algorithms. It also offers the possibility to imagine non-UAV based platforms for the acquisition of very high resolution images in the context of fertilization.
