Analysis of Secular Change and a Novel Method of Stature Estimation Utilizing Modern Skeletal Collections

Fitzpatrick, Tony A 06 May 2012 (has links)
Reconstructing stature is at the core of providing information on unidentified human remains. This research shows that there are significant differences between modern populations and those used to create the most common stature estimation formulae. New formulae for the femur and fibula in males and females were created to provide accurate estimates for modern forensic cases. Additionally, a novel measurement of the femur is shown to be moderately correlated with stature and stature estimation formulae for this measurement are included.

Quality of life assessment after fibula free flap reconstruction for mandibular defects post benign tumour ablative surgery

Jonsson, Philip January 2021 (has links)
Magister Chirurgiae Dentium (MChD) / Introduction: Defects in the mandible and maxilla have various etiological factors. These include trauma, inflammatory diseases or pathology such as benign and malignant tumours. Patients that are exposed to these factors are often left with compromised function and aesthetics which could have a deleterious effects on the patients’ quality of life if not adequately restored with reconstructive surgery (Goh et al. 2008). Reconstruction should aim to allow rehabilitation of normal stomatognathic function, facial contour and aesthetics, obliteration of dead space left after ablation, and the need to examine the area for recurrence (Kim and Ghali 2011). The fibula free flap has become the gold standard for maxillofacial reconstruction. This flap offers various advantages that makes it suitable, especially for reconstructing defects of the mandible (Anne-Gaelle et al. 2011). The success of rehabilitation of these patients should however also take into consideration the patient’s ability to use a dental prosthesis (conventional or implant retained) post-operatively. This remains challenging (Kramer and Dempf 2005). The effective placement of a dental prosthesis relies on the basic principles of retention, stability and support. With the altered anatomy caused by the graft, placement of dental implants is used to enhance retention and stability. Quality of life (QoL) is a measure of a patient’s satisfaction with their current situation in regards to function and other factors compared to a perceived or expected ideal. The subjective component linked to quality of life means that it could vary from one locality to another, and therefore gathering data that will establish a baseline for these patients that have undergone tumour ablative surgeries. This could be invaluable to healthcare practitioners that operate in this specific field.

Diffusion du mobilier de Golasecca au nord des Alpes au premier âge du Fer : des éléments vestimentaires aux réseaux de circulations à moyenne et à longue distance / Diffusion of Golasecca culture to the North of the Alps in the early iron age : from personal ornaments to medium and long-distanxe trade networks

Cicolani, Veronica 14 June 2010 (has links)
Based on the critical inventory of more than five hundred clothing accessories from the southern-Alps discovered in the northern-Alps, the present work aims at characterising the role of the Golasecca civilisation in the growth of circulation networks linking up the western Mediterranean to Celtic civilisations. Personal belongings discovered in many alpine and transalpine settlements and burial places bear witness of a direct implication of the Golasecca culture in medium and long-distance trades. This implication results in phenomena of cultural mix, technological transfer and mixed nature population, that are perceptible in certain areas of the alpine massif as well as through some displacements and relatively long-time frequenting of the main Hallstattian local settlements of varied kind and status. As a phenomenon which is partly linked to the emergence of aristocratic societies, the circulating of luxurious objects and ornaments illustrates the fact that Gollasecca has been a major go-between in the trade and communication networks between Mediterranean cultures and Hallstatt chiefs.

Det ornerade bronset och dess griftefärd

Fransson, Daniel January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to study the evolution and differences of motifs on bronze age objects associated with men and women, the differences in plastic ornamentation and the differences in grave goods in five danish oakcoffin burials from II-III, and fourtythree swedish cremation graves from period IV-VI. The methods used for the motifs and plastic ornamentation are an iconographical one and for the grave goods I have chosen to make a chart. The spiral motifs on beltplates and the ships on the bronze razors, for example, have played a significant part in bronze age life. The same could be said of the plastic ornamentation on the horse headed razors from period II-III. The grave goods from the danish oakcoffin burials could possibly be seen as something connected with sunpriestesses. The few gravegoods coming from the swedish cremation graves could be viewed as a consequence of larger villagers appearing during the late bronze age.
