Embedded Madness: Mad Narrators and Possible WorldsBrason, Eloise January 2019 (has links)
Madness has long been a popular theme for literature, featuring as a trope of horror, mystery, tragedy and comedy genres in varying degrees of amplitude. The topic has provided a significant access point for analysing historical, socio-political and cultural issues as it addresses controversial themes of alienation and criminality as well as philosophical theories of perception and consciousness. As a result, studies on the representation of madness in literature have been dominated by historical approaches that focus directly on social, political, philosophical and psychoanalytical interpretive models. Comparatively little has been done to analyse madness in literature from a narratological perspective. It is for this reason that I will conduct a narratological study on the impact of madness on narrative and fictional world structures. I am specifically interested in the way in which madness can be embedded across multiple levels of the narrative and the effect that this has on readers’ imaginative and interpretive processes. Close readings of Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club (1996) Bret Easton-Ellis’ American Psycho (1991) and John Banville’s The Book of Evidence (1989) will uncover some of the techniques that are used to embed madness into the textual and imaginative structures of a narrative, and will demonstrate how this works to deceive and challenge the reader. I will demonstrate the need for an expansion of terms within the narratological model that can cope specifically with the theme of madness.

Pedagogy at Hogwarts : A literary analysis of teaching methods and theories at Hogwarts in the Harry Potter booksFriberg, Linus January 2019 (has links)
This essay argues that the Harry Potter books can be used to analyse various methods and theories regarding pedagogy since the school setting is a major part of the stories. J.K Rowling’s characterisation of the teachers is the basis for the analysis, which focuses on the teaching methods of the teachers at Hogwarts, but also how the pupils are affected by them from the critical perspective of cultural studies. The essay will investigate how the pupils are affected by the boarding schools, examination process as well as the grading system. Certain Professors at Hogwarts will also be analysed based on their teaching methods and these professors are Lupin, Snape, Umbridge, Dumbledore and Lockhart. Different methods have been discovered to work differently on different pupils, but the same methods have also been shown to work differently depending on how they are implemented. Leadership styles in the classroom appear to have a heavy influence on the pupils’ performance. This thesis argues that through a literary analysis of the Harry Potter books with a focus on the portrayal of the school setting by using cultural studies as well as pedagogical theories will demonstrate the impact of various teaching methods in the EFL-classroom as well as the regular classroom. In the EFL-classroom, knowledge of how certain methods and theories work can be very beneficial. The ability to provide confidence to pupils has been discussed and that is a part of EFL-teaching that is highly relevant, since it can be difficult for some pupils to find the courage in order to learn.

Dramaturgia e ficção curta: um estudo de suas ligações e projeções na obra teatral de Tennessee Williams [1911-1983] / Drama and fiction: a study of its links and projections in the theater of Tennessee Williams [1911-1983]Flandoli, Elizabeth Belleza 02 February 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to prove the expressive number of short stories by Tennessee Williams, relatively high to be composed of around fifty short stories which represented in various manners the genesis of later theater plays, besides highlighting cases of plays seen/ considered sources of short-story telling or even screenplays written by the author. The supremacy of episodes in which the short stories are seen as fictional sources of dramaturgic works by the writer was confirmed by verifying and analyzing the theater and the production/creation of short stories by Tennessee Williams. By doing the analytical study of three theater plays in one-act and a three-act play [fulllength play] it was possible to establish the relationship between the theater plays and the structure of the short stories as well as present a more profound understanding of the formal processes and the links between the plays and his short stories: The Dark Room [O Quarto Escuro, theater play and short story, approximately 1939/1940], Something Unspoken [Algo não Dito, play, 1953] and Happy August the Tenth [Feliz Dez de Agosto, short story, 1970]; Twenty-seven Wagons Full of Cotton [Vinte e sete Carros de Algodão, short story, 1935] and the one-act play with the same title [written before 1946] e The Night of the Iguana [A Noite do Iguana: short story written between 1946-48 and the play with the same title, in one act, in 1959 and in three acts, in 1961]. Therefore, the dialogue among various types of art was studied, besides the sources of inspiration of the playwright and the representations of history on drama and in his short stories investigated.

Pelos olhos de Alice: ancestralidade afro-ameríndia, ambientalismo e formação - uma tese de ficção autobiográfica / Through the eyes of Alice: afro-amerindian ancestrality, environmentalism and formation an autobiographic fiction thesis.Caffagni, Carla Wanessa do Amaral 23 September 2016 (has links)
This research aimed to develop an anthropological study about the subject`s self-formation process from the analysis of an autobiographical fiction. This material was elaborate based on the very author`s rescue and written record of memories and had its beginning on the writing of an academic memorial, providing favorable elements for the comprehension of the self-learner formation process. The autobiographic fiction analyzed was written before the research, has as its main subject the girl called Alice, that lived her adventures in fantastic narratives, whose symbolism foments an phenomenological analysis in the experiences and emotions that, during life, allowed the formation of this author-subjects work, considering herself more than a social and environmental media, but someone in constant formation, also a result of her choices and her own readings of the world. The experiences lived and represented in Alice`s symbolic world, consider, as part of her creation, the contact with some masters that through orality and acquaintanceship, determined desires and influenced choices along the authors life. To understand the relation between master and apprentice played by Alice, we start from the rescue of life stories of two masters that had decisive parts for the author-subject. We seek to find connections between these life stories in the fictional autobiography, via mitohermeneutics, trying to understand how these lives were being constructed and in what moment these people passed to be masters, and the author, apprentice. A search about the self, and the other that is constituted in me.

Is the Contemporary Historical Novel Convincing? : An Analysis of the Interaction between Fact and Fiction in Three Prix Palatine Novels.Ekström-Sotto, Caroline January 2015 (has links)
The focus of this study is to analyze in what way the historical novel can be convincing and if the interaction between fictional and factual narration within this genre influences the degree to which it can be convincing. The three novels chosen are Les Naufragés De L’Île Tromelin by Irène Frain, Les Enfants d’Alexandrie by Françoise Chandernagor and Bison by Patrick Grainville, for which all three authors received Le Grand Prix Palatine. In the introduction are presented the general characteristics of the genre as well as its capability of being convincing, outlining that there is a possibility for a fictional work to seem more convincing than a purely factual one. Also defined are differences between the contemporary and the classical historical novel. This is done in order to take into account in the analysis what might be learnt from the contemporary historical novel. The theoretical framework consists of the semantic definitions of fictional versus factual narration as presented by Jean-Marie Schaeffer, as well as theory of how the reader’s immersive experience enables ontological crossings. What the analysis is able to show is that all three novels include four types of truth claims, that the reader can be convinced of all four and that this conviction is connected to the context to which the reader associates the historical/literary character. The analysis also brings forth what can be thought of as the historiographical pact, a term analogous with Philippe Lejeune’s term ‘the autobiographical pact’, which establishes a referential link with history. What is in the end considered the most convincing literary device is the inclusion of factual markers referencing real-world sources. In all three novels, it is also possibly to identify truth claims concerning human nature.

Mr Chester Jester / Mr Chester JesterÅgren, Johanna January 2012 (has links)
My bachelor project is a work of pattern design and production of woven upholstery fabrics, digital prints on textile materials and wallpaper, made for a fictional home environment. The desicions for the designs are based on a fictional character, named Mr Chester Jester. His preferences and needs combined with my omn are the result of this project. The outcome of the work is a formation of his world, made into a study of his home on the edge of reality and illusions. It is a work of duplicities -of pattern, room, technique and of an alternate side of myself.I have investigated the illusion of reality, and the reality of illusions. / Program: Textildesignutbildningen

A ficção de si mesmo: da dissolução dos sujeitos à autonomia da narrativa / The fiction itself: the dissolution of the subject at narrative autonomyAdriana Oliveira de Arruda 24 April 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to examine how relationships are established construction of subjects in some fictional novels selected. Although we know that there are several considerations that could be drawn about when dealing with subjects such as literature, fiction, subject and otherness and "egoescritas" (the "written itself"), we decided to cut that includes mechanisms for construction of subjects interpenetration of fiction and literary concepts applied to those within certain novels - notably New York Trilogy, The eternal Son, Nine nights and Death in Venice - without, however, ignore that same cut when it comes to poetry and even in the same assay, the latter having Fernando Pessoa as maximum index of "alterpoesia" through heteronym Antonio Mora. We will discuss the forms of representation of this subject that is constituted from fiction, leaving "footprints" that point to the figure of the author of the novel, making the reader raises questions about labyrinths and intersections between literature and fiction, autobiography, self-fiction, among other discussions

January 2007 (has links)
Chegando assim a evidência temática. / Abstract: Starting from the question about the kind of intrinsical information in the fictional narrative, this research looked for data for documental analysis. It was necessary to develop a question regarding to aboutness and its relation to the mimese and the ideia of information-as-thing by Michael Buckland. Reaching by this way an evidence to a aboutness. After that, chronicle genere was classified and its form as a documental universe for the Information Science. Analysing Plínio Marcos' chronicle, that were produced from 1964 to 1980, it was noticed the mobility of the structure canonisa of the narrative, such as manipulation, competence, performance and sanction. The complexity of the structure showed the difficulty in the development of an analysis'methodology. As a conjecture, it was applied the sense developing way, after dividing a chronicle in episodes. The result was the possibility to analyse the chronicle from the fragmetation of its superstructure and create a way of themes to find the aboutness in the fictional narrative document. / Mestre
