A cerâmica de figuras negras tasienses no contexto arqueológico: múltipla Ártemis e o feminino na Tasos arcaica / Thasian Black-figures pottery in the Archaeological Context: Multiple Arthemis and the Feminine in Arcaic Thasos

Hora, Juliana Figueira da 13 June 2018 (has links)
The aim of the present research was to study Thasian black-figured pottery as archaeologically contextualized documents, forming part of the votive objects offered at female sanctuaries, especially the Artemision of Thasos. The research is centered on Thasos, an island situated in the Northern Aegean, settled by Greeks from Paros. We focus on the Archaic Period, more specifically on the sixth century BC, the peak of local production. Departing from the archaeological contexts, illuminated through excavation reports, we analyze significant social and religious connections among votive materials associated with the Thasian black-figured pottery. These connections brought us elements that allowed us to interpret the multiculturalism imbricated within the objects, the mimicry and the innovations in the decoration of this black-figured pottery, as well as the special demand, in quantitative terms, of a type of vessel called lekane, an object that was loaded with information and cultic meanings. In addition, those same elements also showed us traits that reveal votive practices, judging by the way the pottery was exhibited, and its decorative features, which to date are only attested in Thasos. The research revealed intrinsic relationships linked to the diverse facets of Artemis, from a goddess protecting the rites of passage to the protection of women in childbirth. Moreover, it demonstrated that the multiple facets of Artemis, as protectress of women, acts in the civic-religious space in connection with the oíkos. Finally, we emphasize that all the elements referred to above were approached from the theoretical perspective of cultural entanglement, reception and cultural innovation, pertinent in grounding our reflection on what emerges from the material remains associated with the archaeological contexts.

O pintor de Gela: características formais e estilísticas, decorativas e iconográficas / The Gela painter: formal and stylistic, decorative and iconographical characteristics

Dias, Carolina Kesser Barcellos 22 May 2009 (has links)
This thesis deals with the pottery vases produced by the Gela Painter, an attic artist who worked from the last decade of the sixth to the beginning of the fifth century BC. This painter belongs to a generation of traditional artists who keeps on producing black figured vases when the red figured technique is introduced and adopted by many artists in Athens. The Gela Painter can be considered a complete artist due to the fact that he makes and decorates his vases with the same dedication. He thinks as a ceramist because he is one - he is aware of the volume in which he creates the elements of image, conscious of the nature of the object in which the image is placed and of the manipulations and shifts that will happen during its use. In his work, the Painter shows interesting and important artistic qualities which have to be considered under different aspects: the technical originality used to produce his vases through which it is possible to notice his worries about symmetry, volume and proportion; the capacity of abstracting and arranging images; the artistic creativity and liberty with which he shows new representations and versions of the same theme developed by other contemporary artists and workshops. This Painter\'s production deserves to be reviewed and re-interpreted due to the fact that all the works dedicated to him are really few when we take into account his importance as an artist belonging to such a fruitful period of the Greek art. Considerations about artistic quality, style, production and chronology can be taken out studying his vases systematically, always having in mind the production of attic black figured vases universe. The knowledge of this Painter\'s production, taking into account both its form and imagery characteristics, contributes to a better characterization and a greater understanding of the artistic and technical development seen in the Greek ceramic production, allowing us to question what we know about art, technology and iconography of this period

FIGURED WORLDS: A PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDY OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE FACULTY LEADERS

Bemiller, Quinton 01 June 2019 (has links)
Despite the importance of community colleges in higher education, community college faculty are understudied. Although the community college has been defined as a teaching institution, its faculty also serve in non-teaching leadership roles. The purpose of this research study is to know (1) what the experiences of community college faculty in leadership roles are, (2) how their roles have changed over time, (3) what factors motivated faculty to accept non-teaching roles, and (4) how faculty have navigated the transition. Data were obtained from open-ended, semi-structured interviews using an Interpretive Phenomenological approach. Qualitative data were transcribed, coded, categorized, and then organized into five prominent thematic findings: a) Loyalty to the Community College and Students, b) A Student-Centered Collegial Identity, c) Personal Fulfillment, d) Cycle of Roles and e) Tensions. This study informs community college stakeholders about how to strengthen and support faculty leadership at the community college with implications for policy, practice and future research.

Racial queer : multiracial college students at the intersection of identity, education and agency

Chang-Ross, Aurora 02 December 2010 (has links)
Racial Queer is a qualitative study of Multiracial college students with a critical ethnographic component. The design methods, grounded in Critical Race Methodology and Feminist Thought (both theories that inform Critical Ethnography), include: 1) 25 semi-structured interviews of Multiracial students, 2) of which 5 were expanded into case studies, 3) 3 focus groups, 4) observations of the sole registered student organization for Multiracial students on Central University’s campus, 5) field notes and 6) document analysis. The dissertation examines the following question: How do Multiracial students understand and experience their racialized identities within a large, public, tier-one research university in Texas? In addition, it addresses the following sub-questions: How do Multiracial students experience their racialized identities in their everyday interactions with others, in relation to their own self-perceptions and in response to the way others perceive them to be? How do Multiracial students’ positionalities, as they relate to power, privilege, phenotype and status, guide their behavior in different contexts and situations? Using Holland et al.’s (1998) social practice theory of self and identity, Chicana Feminist Theory, and tenets of Queer Theory, this study illustrates how Multiracial college students utilize agency as racial queers to construct and negotiate their identities within a context where identity is both self-constructed and produced for them. I introduce the term, racial queer, to frame the unconventional space of the Multiracial individual. I use this term not to convey sexuality, but to convey the parallels of queerness (both as a term of empowerment and derogation) as they pertain to being Multiracial. In other words, queerness denotes a unique individuality as well as a deviation from the norm (Sullivan, 2003; Warner, 1993; Gamson, 2000). The primary purpose of this study is to illustrate the agentic ways in which Multiracial college students come to understand and experience the complexity of their racialized identity production. Preliminary findings suggest the need to expand the scope of racial discourses to include Multiracial experiences and for further study of Multiracial students. Their counter-narratives access an otherwise invisible student population, providing an opportunity to broaden critical discourses around education and race. / text

Women at sympósia: gender representation in banquet scenes in Attic vases (VI - IV a.C.)

Maria Fernanda Brunieri Regis 13 March 2009 (has links)
Our goal in this research is to evaluate the iconographic models of banquet scenes with women, dialoguing with the main theories on Greek vases imagery. In this way, we try to understand how the iconographical parameters reproduced by Attic craftsmen were built, and we compare the Greek artifacts with material culture of different places and periods. Based on a corpus with scenes of women at symposia, our study takes in account the modern debates about this subject and the archaeological approaches on the figured documents.

Ricerche sui contesti delle ceramiche attiche a figure nere in Italia (630-560/550 a.C.) / Researches into the Contexts of the Attic Black-Figured Pottery in Italy (630-560/550 B.C.)

ANTONIUCCI, ALESSANDRA 04 April 2008 (has links)
Additions to Attic Black-Figure Vase Painters and to Red-Figure Vase Painters, Oxford 1971) e nella monografia a cura di R. Rosati (La ceramica attica nel Mediterraneo. / The subject-matter of this study is the Attic black-figured pottery recovered in Italy, that can be set between 630 and 560/550 B.C. The documentary material is derived from the published one. The objectives of the research are: to update the data sample collected in the indexes published by J. Beazley (Attic Black-Figure Vase-Painting, Oxford 1956; Paralipomena. Additions to Attic Black-Figure Vase Painters and to Red-Figure Vase Painters, Oxford 1971) and in the monograph edited by R. Rosati (La ceramica Attica nel Mediterraneo. Analisi computerizzata della diffusione. Le fasi iniziali (630-560 a.C.), Bologna 1989); to propose a reading of the classified documentation that takes into account information about the recovery contexts in order to understand function and meaning of the Attic pottery in the cultural areas that can be located in the territory and the period taken into consideration. The work of census of material and contexts has made it possible to identify more than 400 Attic black-figured patterns, coming from fifty-nine places that situated in the Po area, in the Adriatic regions, in the Ionian ambit, in the Tyrrhenian one, in the areas of Sicily and Sardinia. The examination of the forms and the images attested in the funeral, sacred and habitable spaces give an opportunity of reflecting upon the dynamics that regulate the acquisition of the Athenian manufactured articles in the various cultural areas and stimulates suppositions on the meaning of these objects in the period taken into consideration.

Gifted, bilingual, Mexican/Mexican-American students : using community cultural wealth as a strategy for negotiating paradoxes

Beam-Conroy, Teddi Michele 22 October 2013 (has links)
This qualitative dissertation study examined the ways that nine gifted, bilingual Mexican/Mexican-American students negotiated paradoxes in their academic, linguistic, and cultural identities in a public high school in a large, south central Texas city. One theoretical lens, Critical Race Theory/Latino Critical Race Theory (CRT/LatCrit) was combined with phenomenological research methods to privilege the students' perspectives during the data collection process. An additional theoretical lens, the concept of Figured Worlds, was used to contextualize the setting, Chase High School. Both CRT/LatCrit and Figured Worlds were used to analyze interview, classroom and field observation, participant, school, and district artifacts, federal, state and local data collected over ten months of study. The investigation revealed that the participants braided the domains of community cultural wealth -- aspirational, navigational, linguistic, social, resistance, and familial capital -- into practices that grounded them in their bilingual, bicultural Mexican/Mexican-American identities as successful students. / text
