“My Life Is So Not Interesting:” Identity Development of Adolescent Minority Girls at an Urban High School

abstract: This study examines the identity development of young women in the context of an urban high school in the Southwest. All of the participants were academically successful and on-track to graduate from high school, ostensibly ready for “college, career and life.” Life story interviews were co-constructed with the teacher-researcher. These accounts were recorded, transcribed and coded for themes related to identity development. The narrative interviews were treated as historical accounts of identity development and, simultaneously, as performances of identity in the figured world of the urban high school. The interviews reflected the participants’ ability to create a coherent life story modulated to the context of the interview. Generally, they used the interviews as an opportunity to test ideas about their identity, or to perform an ideal self. Several key findings emerged. First, while content and focus of the interviews varied widely, there was a common formulation of success among the participants akin to the traditional “American Dream.” Second, the participants, although sharing key long term goals, had a diverse repertoire of strategies to achieve their goals. Last, schooling, both informal and formal, played different roles in supporting the women during this transition from childhood to adulthood. Results indicate that multiple pathways exist for students to find success in US high schools, and that the “college for all” narrative may limit educators’ ability to support students as they create their own narratives of successful lives. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Educational Psychology 2016

Le projet de recherche a comme objectif de mieux saisir le commerce corinthien dans le monde grec et méditerranéen oriental en suivant le volume de ses exportations ainsi que les variations régionales et temporelles et en tentant d’en élucider les mécanismes, qu’ils soient d’origine économique, politique ou sociale. Cette étude s’appuie essentiellement sur les céramiques corinthiennes figurées diffusées pendant la plus grande partie de l’époque archaïque, du IXe siècle jusqu’au milieu du VIe siècle avant J.-C. Les céramiques géométriques, non figurées, à vernis noir et les amphores sont également mis à contribution, dans la mesure du possible, pour affiner l’étude, ainsi que les autres produits d’exportation, moins importants sur le plan quantitatif, comme les chevaux de bronze. L’ensemble des exportations est mis en parallèle avec les importations, beaucoup moins nombreuses, afin d’insérer le commerce corinthien dans le cadre plus large des échanges du monde grec et du monde méditerranéen, et de mieux comprendre la nature des relations économiques qui lient Corinthe à chacun de ses partenaires. Une comparaison avec d’autres corpus, plus amples, permet de mettre l’étude en perspective et de confirmer les grands traits de l’évolution du commerce corinthien en Méditerranée orientale. Chaque grande phase de ce commerce (géométrique, protocorinthien, corinthien) est subdivisée en treize périodes, permettant de suivre l’activité économique tout au long de treize générations d’hommes. L’étude par type de forme permet enfin de suivre l’évolution des goûts et des marchés durant toute la période archaïque / The aim of the research project is to better understand Corinthian trade in the Greek and the Eastern Mediterranean world through the analysis of its exports volume and the local and temporal variations while trying at the same time to clarify its economic, political or social mechanisms. This study is mainly based on the figured Corinthian pottery that spread during most of the Archaic Age from the 9th to the 6th century BC. The geometric pottery (non-figured) and the amphora are also used in the analysis as much as possible, to sharpen our study, as well as other exportation products less important in terms of quantities such as bronze horses. The whole of the exports is studied with the imports which were far fewer in order to put the Corinthian trade into the larger setting of the Greek and Mediterranean trade and to have a better understanding of the nature of the economic relations binding Corinth to its trading partners. A comparison with a wider corpus of documents enables us to put the study into perspective and to reinforce the broad features of the Corinthian trade in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Every big stage of this trade (Geometric, Protocorinthian, Corinthian) is subdivided into thirteen periods allowing us to follow the economic activities along thirteen generations of men. Identity Work to Teach Mathematics for Social Justice

In this thesis, mathematics educators are conceptualized as individuals with multiple, simultaneous figured worlds that inform their decisions while planning. The study explores how two mathematics educators negotiated and orchestrated their figured worlds to plan two mathematics lessons for social justice. The results highlight how numerous the figured worlds each participant surfaced through background interviews. Some of the figured worlds were elicited by the interview questions (i.e., Race, Family, Social Justice Teaching) but other figured worlds organically surfaced through the interviews (i.e., Sexuality, Community, Activism, Critical Information Consumption). A discursive analysis of a selection of these figured worlds revealed conceptualizations that were unique and similar between the two participants' figured worlds. Only some of these figured worlds were orchestrated in the planning of two social justice lessons. First, the figured world of Mathematics Teaching was demonstrated to be in apparent tension with the figured world of Social Justice teaching but were orchestrated by the participants to be valued together through adaptation of the lesson to include both mathematical and social justice goals. Second, the figured worlds of Quantitative Reasoning and Social Justice Teaching were negotiated, with one participant valuing student reasoning with quantities over students reasoning with the injustice evident in the tasks. Third, personal figured worlds (Race, Gender, Church, etc.) limited the participants from fully anticipating the possible reactions of students during the lesson. The results of this study can inform teacher educator practice of the complexity of teacher identity work, particularly to engage in teaching math for social justice.

Weniger bekannt ist seine Theoretisch-practische Clavier-, Partitur-, Präludier- und Orgel-Schule aus den späten zwanziger Jahren des 19. Der dritte, 1827 erschienene Teil dieser Schule ist nahezu ausschließlich musiktheoretischen Fragestellungen gewidmet; seine geringe Verbreitung verwundert angesichts der stolzen Zahl von immerhin 900 Subskribenten. / Today the Bavarian organist and composer Matthias Waldhör (1796–1833) is well known because of the dissemination of his Neue Volks-Gesang-Schule, printed in 1830 and read very broadly in the first half of the nineteenth century, especially in the Alpine region. His Theoretisch-practische Clavier-, Partitur-, Präludier- und Orgel-Schule from the late 1820s is less known – and a rare book in music libraries and archives. The third part of it, published in 1827, is exclusively dedicated to aspects of music theory; the small circulation astonishes – because of the high number of more than 900 subscriptions.

Drawing the divide : the nature of Athenian identity as reflected in the depiction of the „other‟ in Attic red-figure vase painting in the fifth century BCE

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: During the fifth century BCE there were three defining periods in Athenian history that challenged its society: the Persian Wars (490 – 479 BCE); Periclean Athens (mid-fifth century); and the Peloponnesian War (431 – 404 BCE). As the development of identity is a reactionary process, these three periods had a profound effect on the Athenian identity and led to the redefinition of this self-image along the primordialist models. Two premises are combined in this study. Firstly that comparisons to contrary ethnicities are vital to the development of identity, and secondly that the visual articulation of an identity is essential to the reinforcement and maintenance of this self-image. This can be applied to the development of Athenian identity during the fifth century BCE as reflected in Attic vase painting. Through a study of the "other" imagery produced in this century, with special attention given to Amazons, it is possible to see the development and nature of the Athenian identity during each of the three periods. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Tydens die vyfde eeu vC was daar drie omskrywende periodes in Atheense geskiedenis wat hul samelewing uitgedaag het: die Persiese Oorloë (490 – 479 vC); Perikleiese Athene (mid-vyfde eeu); en die Pelopponiese Oorlog (431 – 404 vC). Omdat die ontwikkeling van identiteit 'n reaksionêre proses is, het hierdie drie periodes 'n diepgaande indruk op die Atheense identiteit gehad en het bygedra tot die herdefiniesie van hierdie selfbeeld volgens die primordialis modelle. Twee stellings word gekombineer in hierdie studie. Sepekovské Písně Mariánské / Marian Songs of Sepekov

The Marian songs of Sepekov is the title for a handwritten Hymnal, which nobody comprehensivly examined and never publish. I discovered this manuscript when I was researching materials for my Bacherol thesis. The hymnal contains 489 czech-language pages from which I composed 43 songs with the organs accompaniment or songs in a four-part adjustment. The transcript od melodic line, next processing of melody and composition of polyphony give the readers an insight into the period of the formation of manuscript and it zooms miracles for which the manuscript was created. The historical events, which were accured in 18th century in Sepekov and were an integral part of the life of people from sepekov, are component of Marian songs. The whole Hymnal is built on devotion, supplication, prayers and the love of the pilgrims to Pana Marie from Sepekov. The pilgrimages, which they performed to this marian's place, were a seal of approval of their belief and it was culmination of their spiritual life for most of them.

Pretendemos neste trabalho avaliar os modelos iconográficos de cenas de banquete que contem com a participação de mulheres, travando um diálogo com as principais correntes de interpretação de imagética vascular grega. Para isso, buscamos compreender como se estabeleceram os parâmetros iconográficos reproduzidos pelos artesãos áticos em uma análise comparativa com a cultura material de figuração semelhante de outras regiões e de períodos diferentes. Com base num corpus de cenas de mulheres em sympósia, os estudos são feitos em paralelo com os atuais debates sobre o tema e levam em considerção as abordagens arqueológicas para estudo de documentos figurados. / Our goal in this research is to evaluate the iconographic models of banquet scenes with women, dialoguing with the main theories on Greek vases imagery. In this way, we try to understand how the iconographical parameters reproduced by Attic craftsmen were built, and we compare the Greek artifacts with material culture of different places and periods. Based on a corpus with scenes of women at symposia, our study takes in account the modern debates about this subject and the archaeological approaches on the figured documents.
