The effects of UVB radiation on intumescence development and the characterization of lesions from physiological disorders on ornamental sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), and interspecific geranium (Pelargonium spp.)

Craver, Joshua Ken January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Horticulture, Forestry, and Recreation Resources / Chad T. Miller / Kimberly A. Williams / Intumescences are a physiological disorder characterized by hypertrophy and possibly hyperplasia of plant cells. Many plant species are susceptible to intumescence development, but the specific causative factors remain uncertain. Ultimately, this disorder results in the death of the affected cells. Previous observations and research suggest that the quality and quantity of light to which plants are exposed may be a factor in development of the disorder. The purpose of the first study was to assess the preventive effect of UVB radiation on intumescence development in ornamental sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas). Two sweet potato cultivars, ‘Sidekick Black’ and ‘Ace of Spades,’ were grown under four light treatments of 1) Normal; 2) UVB; 3) UVB-Blocked; 4) Full-Spectrum. The ‘Ace of Spades’ cultivar was highly susceptible to intumescence development, while ‘Sidekick Black’ was much less susceptible to the disorder. For ‘Ace of Spades,’ the addition of UVB radiation significantly reduced the number of leaves affected with intumescences when compared to plants grown under the other light treatments. This study indicates a cultivar-specific effect of UVB light in minimizing intumescence development on ornamental sweet potato, therefore suggesting a potential genetic component in intumescence susceptibility. Many plant species are prone to similar physiological disorders in which lesions develop on the leaf tissue. Nomenclature for such lesions has varied significantly in the literature. Interchangeably using these terms causes confusion as to whether these names refer to the same or different disorders. The objective of the second study was to characterize the development of lesions on ornamental sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas ‘Blackie’), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum ‘Maxifort’) and interspecific geranium (Pelargonium בCaliente Coral’). Light microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and digital photography were used to observe lesion development on each species. Lesions on ornamental sweet potato predominately involved the hypertrophy of the palisade parenchyma through the upper epidermis, while geranium lesions involved the hypertrophy of spongy parenchyma cells restricted by the lower epidermis. Tomato lesions involved both the hypertrophy and hyperplasia of the lower epidermis and spongy parenchyma. Thus, different species possess varied cellular responses when developing lesions due to physiological causes.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Paula Guimaraes Lago Pinheiro.pdf: 1345137 bytes, checksum: dd311733f8b60dbc79fa8fc2930d2a15 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-07-21 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Recently the use of heliconia as cut flowers, stimulated the interest of the use of new species in landscaping. Those plants offer beauty and exoticism to the garden and follows the tendency of landscape projects with native plants. The Heliconia genus, Heliconiaceae family, have plants with exotic inflorescences in vibrant colors that range for yellow, orange, red, and pink that are characterizes as tropical gardens plants. There are around 182 species of Heliconia, nevertheless, due to the lack of knowledge on the individual characteristics of the species from this genus, only a few are used as ornamental plants by landscape professionals. This work was carried out to evaluate ornamental characteristics of genotypes from Heliconia, grown in full sun in the period January to December 2008, as well as involve them in landscape applications. The experiment was conducted at Heliconias Germoplasm Collection of Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE), through analysis for the qualitative and quantitative characteristics related to clump and inflorescences aspect of this genotypes. Except for cv. Red Opal, H. psittacorum cultivars and its interspecific hybrids were considered to be short plants (less than 1.51 meters height) and adequate as a massive flower bed that would not interfere on the views and may be used to complement design lines, generating ambiences and ordering the garden spaces. The genotypes H. collinsiana, H. rostrata and H. foreroi showed inflorescences which last longer than 78 days in good conditions in the clump, which is an remarkable aspect in the landscape. H. bihai inflorescences was difficult to visualize, its bracts accumulate water, attract insects and have odor. An experiment conduct from January 2007 to July 2008 permitted evaluated Heliconia x nickeriensis to ornamental characteristics and management for garden use. It’s described as short height plant, with quick development, dispersed type of clump architecture and open growth habit. The clump area reached 5.14 m2 at 18 months after planting (MAP), demonstrading the necessity of a large space for development . The shoots emission in the internal part of the clump permitted a complete soil coverage. The dark green leaves contrast with the yellow-orange inflorescence which are easily visualized above its foliage. The flowering period started at 9 MAP, reaching an emission of more than 17 inflorescences per clumb at 17 MAP. The inflorescences kept the quality for more than 25 days after its emittion in the clump. This genotype represents a good option to be used either isolated, for covering large open areas, or grouped with other ornamental plants to create compositions with different colors, forms and textures. This heliconias have particularities that confer acceptation and adequacy to landscape design, allowing the landscape professionals to diversify plant specifications.

Francisco Sadi Santos Pontes 31 August 2007 (has links)

Role of light and temperature in the flowering of Watsonia species.

Mtshali, Ntombizamatshali Prudence. January 2006 (has links)
The role of light and temperature on flowering of South African Watsonia species were evaluated to assess the potential for this genus as a commercial flower crop. Species were selected that represent different climatic regions of South Africa, with the aim of understanding how ecologically distinct species perform under cultivation. The four selected species were W. borbonica and W. tabularis (winter-rainfall area), W. angusta (shared rainfall) and W. pillansii (summer-rainfall area). In order to establish the optimum temperature required for flowering, plants were exposed for 12 weeks to three temperature regimes (12/7 °C, 21/15 °C and 29/21 °C) after attaining their first and/or second leaves. A temperature shift of 12/7 °C was used to assess if the plants had a vemalisation requirement. Controls were maintained under 25 % shade under natural conditions, with an average temperature of 24/7 °C. An elevated temperature of 29/21 °C was detrimental to plant growth. Moderate temperatures of 21/15 °C significantly (P<0.001) increased the height and the number of leaves produced per plant relative to the 12/7 °C treatment. These temperatures significantly (P<0.001) increased the total number of flowers produced per plant compared to low temperatures. However, flowering percentage and quality of flowers were reduced. A low temperature regime of 12/7 °C was efficient in satisfying vernalisation requirements and inducing flowering in four selected species. However, the total number of leaves produced per plant was signifcantly reduced. The summer-rainfall species, W pillansii, displayed a qualitative response to vernalisation, as no flowering was observed in non-vernalised plants. Two winter-rainfall species, W borbonica and W. tabularis, demonstrated a quantitative response to vernalisation. These species flowered at non-vernalising temperatures. W angusta behaved like the winter-rainfall species in terms of flowering. Overall, a vernalisaton treatment marginally reduced days to flower while flowering percentage was increased compared to other temperature regimes. However, there was no increase in the total number of flowers produced per plant. Low temperatures were not only effective for flower induction, but also for releasing corm dormancy, thus synchronising growth. Storing corms at either 4 or 10 QC resulted in 100 % sprouting within 4-6 weeks. The role of daylength in flowering of Watsonia plants was established by subjecting plants to long days (LO) of 16 h light and 8 h dark and to short days (SO) of 8 h light and 16 h dark. The number of leaves and flowering were significantly (P<0.01) promoted under the LO regime. However, there was strong temperature and daylength interaction in terms of flowering potential, as at low temperatures flowering was induced irrespective of daylength. In W. pillansii, flowering was obtained under both regimes (LO and SO) applied at the second leaf stage. Flowering in W. borbonica and W. tabularis was only observed under the LO regime at the second leaf stage. In both species, flowering was also obtained in SD-treated plants, provided treatment occurred after the formation of the third leaf. However, the total number and quality of flowers were reduced. To examine the effect of light intensity on flowering, plants at different developmental stages (first and/or second or beyond the third leaf stage) were exposed to photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) of 150 jJmol m-2s-1 or 39.5 jJmol m-2s-1 for 7 weeks. Exposure to low light intensity at either developmental stage compromised leaf quality. No flowering was observed following low light intensity treatment during the first to third leaf stages, even though plants were exposed to low temperature and LO regimes, both of which promoted flowering. Observation of the shoot apical meristem revealed that the second leaf stage was critical as the anatomical transition to flowering occurred at this level. When beyond the third leaf stage, low light intensity did not prevent flowering. However, the number of flowers produced per plant was reduced compared to plants maintained at 150 jJmol m-2s-1. Thus, light intensity played a role in both plant morphogenesis and flowering. LDs were effective in promoting vegetative growth whereas high light intensity and low temperature regimes played pivotal roles in flower induction. This makes them useful horticulture tools to produce desirable Watsonia plants for commercialisation. / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2006.

DISPONIBILIDADE HÍDRICA NO CULTIVO DE CRAVINA EM VASOS COM SUBSTRATO DE CINZA DE CASCA DE ARROZ / WATER AVAILABILITY ON CRAVINA GROWING IN POTS WITH RICE HUSK ASH SUBSTRATE

Schwab, Natalia Teixeira 25 February 2011 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The aim of this study was to analyze the development of cravina culture in substrate ash rice husk in different vessel sizes and under varying levels of water availability, observing its response as the height of the stems developed, number of nodes per stem; fresh weight and dry weight of stems and number of flower buds developed per stem. The cultivar used in the experiment was a hybrid of series 'Melody', the seedlings were obtained by cutting a die makers deployed specifically for this purpose. The seedlings were first planted in rooting where they remained for 30 days and were then transplanted in black plastic pots, 8 and 18 liters, filled with a substrate of rice husk ash, and kept 100% 80% 60% and 40% of the capacity of water retention of the vessels. Maintenance of the water vessel was performed by the method of weighting, with added amounts of water to keep the vessel in your weight limit. The water consumption of plants was determined by the method of weighing over two crop cycles. Results showed that the water consumption of this species is highly influenced by the weather; is recommend the use vessel of lower capacity and maintenance water in 40% of the capacity to retain water; it is preferable to growing the cravina in just a cycle, since the rods obtained in the second exhibit features not fit for commercialization.

The plant is sensitive to the day length for flowering induction, and classified as a short-day plant. This enables the flowering control, and consequently the schedule of the production time. The cut flowers crop production is based on long-day length to induce vegetative development to obtain necessary characteristics for commercialization. The plant height and fresh mass are very influenced by the long-day length and variety. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the production and quality of the chrysanthemum cut flower, cultivated in greenhouse conditions with different long-day number. The experimental design was randomized completed blocks, with split-splot arrangement. The plots were the long-day period (21, 28, 35, 42 and 49 days) and the sub-plot were the varieties (Calabria, Dragon, Sheena, Apricot Repin and Rebasco), with three replicates and five plants by experimental unit. Significant difference was observed among the long-days periods for all traits, except for the number of internodes in short-day. For the most traits was observed significant different among varieties, and for the interaction varieties x periods. The long-day periods influence all the traits, it shows that the methodology was adequate and provided the desired effects of this plants development. The long-day effects caused differences responses among the varieties. The stem with better quality was observed in Dragon at 21 long-days, Calabria at 28, Apricot Repin at 35 and Sheena at 49 long-days. The variety Rebasco did not achieve the commercial quality standard in neither of periods. The variety Dragon when produced with 21 long-days reduced the production cicle in 25 days, keeping the stem quality.

In Brazil, there are no registered fungicides to control this disease and there are no studies indicating the more resistant cultivars. The study aimed to verify, on field conditions, the effectiveness of fungicides mixtures and rock dust on the control of rust and on the agronomic characteristics of five cultivars the daylily, identify the resistance degree of this cultivars to rust, as well to verify, in vitro, the efficacy of seven fungicides and rock dust on the germination inhibition of P. hemerocallidis urediniospore. The experiments were conducted at the Center of Agroveterinaries Sciences, CAV/UDESC in Lages, SC. On field conditions evaluated the cultivars Cora Offer, Daniela Esther Nass, Hariet, Margaret Mee and São Paulo and the products rock dust, pyraclostrobin + epoxiconazole, trifloxystrobin + tebuconazole, picoxystrobin + cyproconazole and azoxystrobin + cyproconazole. The fungicides were applied every thirty days for a total of three applications and the rock dust was applied every seven days for a total of thirteen applications. Weekly were quantified the incidence and severity of rust on leaves and through these data were calculated the Area Under Disease Progress Curve (AUDPC). It was also evaluated number of leaves, of flowers and of tillers. It was observed that all mixtures of fungicides reduced the disease incidence and severity, as well, delayed leaf senescence process. The mixtures pyraclostrobin + epoxiconazole, trifloxystrobin + tebuconazole and picoxystrobin + cyproconazole provided higher number of flowers the plants. The rock dust reduced the severity of the disease, but had lowest control in relation to fungicides mixtures, besides had not increased in none agronomic characteristics. The cultivar Daniela Esther Nass had the lowest incidence and severity of rust and the smallest reduction in number of leaves. The cultivar Daniela Esther Nass was classified as moderately resistant/resistant to rust, the Cora Offer as moderately susceptible/ susceptible, the Hariet and Margaret Mee as susceptible, and São Paulo as very susceptible. In the in vitro assay were evaluated the products azoxystrobin, picoxystrobin, pyraclostrobin, trifloxystrobin, cyproconazole, epoxiconazole, tebuconazole and rock dust at concentrations of 0, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10 and 100 mg L-1. The products were diluted and mixed in a water-agar media, and stored at 4°C for 24 hours. Was added 0.5 mL of a suspension containing urediniospore of P. hemerocallidis and the incubation was at 22°C, in the dark, for 6 hours. The IC50 values were within the range of 0.01 to 0.1 mg L-1 for fungicides of the strobilurin chemical group; between 0.1 and 1 mg L-1 to tebuconazole; between 1 and 10 mg. L-1 to epoxiconazole, and between 10 and 100 mg. L-1 to cyproconazole and rock dust. The CI100 was observed only in fungicides azoxystrobin and picoxystrobin. It was concluded that all fungicides of the strobilurin chemical group and tebuconazole showed highly toxicity to urediniospores of the P. hemerocallidis, and fungicides epoxiconazole and cyproconazole, such as the rock dust had moderately toxicity this pathogen / A ferrugem (Puccinia hemerocallidis) é a principal doença do hemerocale. A cultivar Daniela Esther Nass apresentou a menor incidência e severidade à ferrugem e a menor redução no número de folhas.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Joao Carlos Cezar de Albuquerque Filho.pdf: 982636 bytes, checksum: 3185ad0ba94f3c3352de6adec6cd8275 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-08-11 / Among the species of tropical flowers produced in Brazil, Alpinia species of the genus stand out as cut flowers, cut foliage and ornamental plants. Cultivars of Alpinia purpurata, known as Gingers, are cultivate as cut flowers for their productivity, beauty, postharvest durability, ease of marketing, transport and acceptance in national and international markets. The Alpinia zerumbet and Alpinia sanderae species are grow for cutting vegetation, due their decorative. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of Alpinia species to be used as cut flowers and foliage, cultivated in full sun condition and half-shade (50% of artificially shade condition). To observe the effect in the quality and production of these. We adopted the experimental design in a factorial arragment of 6 x 2 (six cultivars x two crop conditions) in A. purpurata and 2 x 2 (two cultivars x two crop conditions) to A. zerumbet and A. sanderae, with four replications. The cultivation in half-shade condition contributed positively the clump high, clump area, shoots numbers in the clump, length, weight of flowering stem and postharvest durability. The most productive cultivars were the Red and Pink Ginger and productivity feature should be prioritized in studies. Also, the crop conditions of 50% artificially shaded contributed positively the clump high, clump projection area in A. zerumbet and A. sanderae species. For the use of Alpinia as cut foliage was observed that cut leaves from A. zerumbet stems without inflorescences present more than 30 days of postharvest durability.
