The Characterization of Bimodal Droplet Size Distributions in the Ultrafiltration of Highly Concentrated Emulsions Applied to the Production of Biodiesel

Falahati, Hamid 26 August 2010 (has links)
A non-reactive model system comprising a highly concentrated and unstable oil-in-water emulsion was used to investigate the retention of oil by the membrane in producing biodiesel with a membrane reactor. Critical flux was identified using the relationship between the permeate flux and transmembrane pressure along with the separation efficiency of the membrane. It was shown that separation efficiencies above 99.5% could be obtained at all operating conditions up to the critical flux. It was observed that the concentration of oil in all collected permeate samples using the oil-water system was below 0.2 wt% when operating at a flux below the critical flux. Studies to date have been limited to the characterization of low concentrated emulsions below 15 vol.%. The average oil droplet size in highly concentrated emulsions was measured as 3200 nm employing direct light scattering (DLS) measurement methods. It was observed that the estimated cake layer thickness of 20 to 80 mm was larger than external diameter of the membrane tube i.e. 6 mm based on a large particle size. Settling of the concentrated emulsion permitted the detection of a smaller particle size distribution (30-100 nm) within the larger particles averaging 3200 nm. It was identified that DLS methods could not efficiently give the droplet size distribution of the oil in the emulsion since large particles interfered with the detection of smaller particles. The content of the smaller particles represented 1% of the total weight of oil at 30°C and 5% at 70°C. This was too low to be detected using DLS measurements but was sufficient to affect ultrafiltration. In order to study the critical flux in the presence of transesterification reaction and the effect of cross flow velocity on separation, various oils were transesterified in another membrane reactor providing higher cross flow velocity. higher cross flow velocity provides better separation by reducing materials deposition on the surface of the membrane due to higher shearing. The oils tested were canola, corn, sunflower and unrefined soy oils (Free Fatty Acids (FFA< 1%)), and waste cooking oil (FFA= 9%). The quality of all biodiesel samples was studied in terms of glycerine, mono-glyceride, di-glyceride and tri-glyceride concentrations. The composition of all biodiesel samples were in the range required by ASTM D6751 and EN 14214 standards. A critical flux based on operating pressure in the reactor was reached for waste cooking and pre-treated corn oils. It was identified that the reaction residence time in the reactor was an extremely important design parameter affecting the operating pressure in the reactor. / Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)

Filsinger, Markus 20 November 2004 (has links) (PDF)
The influence of biofilm, encrustation, flow velocity and water quality on the release of PAHs was investigated in batch, continuously flown reactor experiments and in a pipe rig system. Chlorination of coal-tar coated stainless steel slides with biofilm resulted in an almost complete removal of the biofilm and an increase of the release of fluorene, phenanthrene and fluoranthene. PAH release of coal-tar coated stainless steel slides exposed to a solution of drinking water with 0,1% sodium azide as an inhibitor of the respiratory chain which did not remove the biofilm led to an increase of all observed PAHs up to the same magnitude as without biofilm. In chlorinated coal-tar leachate the following derivatives were detected while partly utilizing an easy method for a continuously extrac-tion: chloroacenaphthene, 1-chloropyrene, 9-fluorenone, anthrone. While reaction products of phenanthrene and fluoranthene could not be found a further reaction to 9-fluorenone catalysed by the coal-tar surface is proposed. Instationary corrosion and no aerobic degradation are the reasons for PAH increase during stagnation periods.

Revascularização cirúrgica do miocárdio com utilização de enxerto de artéria radial esqueletizada ou com tecidos adjacentes: análise comparativa randomizada / Surgical revascularization of the myocardium with the use of grafts of the skeletonized radial artery or with surrounding tissues: random comparative analysis

Rômulo César Arnal Bonini 01 October 2007 (has links)
BACKGROUND: The use of artery grafts in the surgical revascularization of the myocardium is currently a well-established procedure by cardiovascular surgeons, and its skeletonization has posed some advantages, in principle, with the left internal thoracic artery. OBJECTIVE: With the purpose of analyzing this radial artery harvest method, the study evaluated the functional and hemodynamic early performance, as well as the morphological anatomic and histological features of the aortic coronary grafts of the radial artery, skeletonized or with surrounding tissues, in the surgical revascularization of the myocardium. METHODS: The study compared 40 patients, randomly distributed in two groups. In Group I, we employed a skeletonized radial artery (20 patients), and in Group II, the radial artery with surrounding tissues (20 patients), for the marginal branches of the left coronary artery. In total, 39 patients underwent cinecoronariography and fluxometry with a 12-MHz Doppler guide catheter (0.014 in., Flowire, Jometrics Inc.), in the immediate postoperative period. RESULTS: Both groups presented similar demographic features. The main intra-surgical variables of the radial artery were also similar, with an extension of 17.1 cm in Group I, and 16.3 cm in Group II, and the free flow was of 80.3 ml/min in Group I, and of 95.5 ml/min in Group II. No morphological anatomic and histological differences were observed in the compared groups. The diameters of the radial artery grafts, which were calculated by quantitative angiography in the postoperative period, were similar (2.66 mm in Group I, and 2.53 mm in Group II), as well as the flow variables (blood flow of 54.9 ml/min in Group I, and of 44.28 ml/min in Group II, and a flow reserve of 2.12 in Group I, and of 2 in Group II). On the other hand, the cinecoronariography revealed the presence of an occlusion in one graft, and of stenosis in five grafts of Group II, while Group I presented stenosis in only one radial artery graft (p = 0.091). CONCLUSIONS: The aortic coronary grafts of the radial artery displayed good functional and hemodynamic early performance. There was no difference between the groups regarding functional and hemodynamic early performance, and the morphological anatomical and histological features.

Overtopping flow on mound breakwaters under depth-limited breaking wave conditions

Mares Nasarre, Patricia 22 February 2021 (has links)
[EN] Climate change and the social concern about the impact of infrastructures is leading to mound breakwaters with reduced crest freeboards facing higher extreme overtopping events. In addition, most mound breakwaters are built in the surf zone where depth-limited wave breaking takes place. Recent studies point out the need of considering not only the mean wave overtopping discharge (q) but also the maximum individual wave overtopping volume (Vmax), the overtopping layer thickness (OLT) and the overtopping flow velocity (OFV) when designing mound breakwater crest elevation using overtopping criteria. However, few studies in the literature are focused on Vmax on coastal structures under depth-limited breaking wave conditions. In addition, those few studies report contradictory conclusions regarding the significance of depth-limited breaking waves on Vmax. With respect to OLT and OFV, no studies are found in the literature for their prediction on mound breakwaters. In this PhD thesis, 2D physical model tests were conducted on overtopped mound breakwaters (0.3≤Rc/Hm0≤2.5) without a crown wall armored with three armor layers (Cubipod®-1L, cube-2L and rock-2L) on two gentle bottom slopes (m=2% and 4%) in depth-limited breaking wave conditions (0.2≤Hm0/h≤0.9). Vmax together with q are the most recommended variables in the literature to design mound breakwater crest elevation based on overtopping criteria. In the present study, the 2-parameter Weibull distribution provides the best results when estimating Vmax*=Vmax/(gHm0T012) with coefficient of determination R2=0.833. During the design phase of a mound breakwater, q is needed to predict Vmax using methods given in the literature. Thus, q must be estimated for design purposes when direct observations are not available. If CLASH NN is used to estimate q (R2=0.636), the goodness-of-fit of the 2-parameter Weibull distribution proposed in this thesis to predict Vmax* is R2=0.617. Hence, the ratio between the estimated and measured Vmax* falls within the range 1/2 to 2 (90% error band) when q is predicted using CLASH NN. The new estimators derived in this study provide satisfactory estimations of Vmax* with a method simpler than those found in the literature. Neither the bottom slope nor the depth-induced wave breaking seem to significantly influence the dimensionless Vmax* in this study. OLT and OFV are directly related to the hydraulic stability of the armored crest and the pedestrian safety. Thus, OLT and OFV are required to properly design crest elevation using overtopping criteria. Neural Networks (NNs) are used in this study to develop new explicit unbiased estimators for the OLT and OFV exceeded by 2% of the incoming waves with a high coefficient of determination (0.866≤R2≤0.867). The appropriate number of significant figures of the empirical coefficients of such estimators is selected according to their variability. The optimum point where wave characteristics are determined to predict OLT and OFV was identified at a distance of 3h from the toe of the structure (where h is the water depth at the toe of the structure). The bottom slope does influence both OLT and OFV. The most extreme values of OLT and OFV are described with the 1-parameter Exponential and Rayleigh distribution functions, respectively, with satisfactory results (0.803≤R2≤0.812). Counter-flow Ion Mobility Analysis: Design, Instrumentation, and Characterization

Agbonkonkon, Nosa 14 November 2007 (has links) (PDF)
The quest to achieve high resolution in ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) has continued to challenge scientist and engineers in the field of separation science. The low resolution presently attainable in IMS has continued to negatively impact its utility and acceptance. Until now, efforts to improve the resolution have mainly focused on better instrumentation and detection methods. However, since the resolution of IMS is diffusion limited, it makes sense to address this limitation in order to attain high resolution. This dissertation presents a new IMS technique, which utilizes a high electric field and opposing high gas flow velocity with the aim to improve resolution. This approach essentially reduces the residence time of ions in the analyzer. This new technique is called "counter-flow ion mobility analysis" (CIMA). Theoretical modeling of this new technique predicted that a resolution of over 1000 is possible, which is over one order of magnitude better than that of conventional IMS techniques currently used. A wind tunnel was designed and constructed to produce a plug gas flow profile that is needed for CIMA. The test region of the wind tunnel was used as the CIMA analyzer region and was constructed from power circuit boards, PCBs, (top and bottom walls) and conductive plastic side walls. An inclined electric field was created by applying suitable voltages to multiple electrode traces on the PCBs. This inclined field, when resolved into its x- and y-components, was used to oppose the counter-gas flow and transport the ions to the detector, respectively. The results obtained did not show an improvement over conventional IMS techniques because of a limitation in the voltage that could be applied to the analyzer region. However, the results predict that high resolution is possible if (1) the ratio of the electric fields in the horizontal (x direction) to the vertical (y direction) is within the range of 2--0.5, (2) very high electric field and high gas flow velocities are applied, and (3) wall effects in the counter-flow gas profile are eliminated. While the resolution obtained using the present instrumentation is far from what was predicted, the foundation for ultimately achieving high resolution has been laid. The use of a wind tunnel has made the instrumentation possible. As far as the author knows, this is the first time a wind tunnel has been used in chemical measurement instrumentation. Chapter 5 of this dissertation, reports a method developed for predicting the reduced mobility constants, of chemical compounds. This method uses a purely statistical regression analysis for a wide range of compounds which is different from similar methods that use a neural network. The calculated value for this method was 87.4% when calculated values were plotted against experimental K0 values, which was close to the value for the neural network method (i.e., 88.7%).

The Characterization of Bimodal Droplet Size Distributions in the Ultrafiltration of Highly Concentrated Emulsions Applied to the Production of Biodiesel

Falahati, Hamid January 2010 (has links)

Vytápění bytových domů / Heating of apartment buildings

Diatel, Jakub January 2019 (has links)
The topic of this diploma thesis is heating of apartment buildings, where an attention was focused on thermal comfort in heated rooms. The first theoretical part brings results of CFD simulations which compare radiators with floor heating. The second part consits of practical application o the given building. There are two options in this project - heating by radiators or floor heating. The third part describes two experiments - measurement of indoor environment in two rooms and measurement of gas consumption in apartment buildings with different heating concepts. In the last part the mean radiant temperature is simulated. There are compared different kind of heating, which have impact to distribution of mean radiant temperature in the room. The personal software was created for deeper understanding of mean radiant temperature.
