Imbongi and griot: toward a comparative analysis of oral poetics in Southern and West AfricaKaschula, Russell H January 1999 (has links)
This article takes up the challenge of comparative research in Africa by analysing and comparing the oral art of West African griots and Southern African iimbongi or oral poets. Similarities and differences between these performers and their respective societies are highlighted through the use of an ethnographic methodology. A distinction is drawn between the more traditional performers such as Thiam Anchou and D.L.P. Yali-Manisi, and the more modern performers such as M’Bana Diop, Bongani Sitole and Zolani Mkiva. The rich use of genealogy and history in the more traditional performances is highlighted. In comparing the work of the more contemporary, urban poets such as M’bana Diop of Senegal and Zolani Mkiva from Southern Africa, similarities are found in their performances on post-independence leaders such as Senghor and Mandela. Political pressures which have been brought to bear on the performer are also discussed. This article explores the continuity between the past and the present in relation to aspects such as the following: how performers gain recognition, their continued survival, their relationship with politics and religion, the orality- literacy debate, and the stylistic techniques used by these performers. Wherever possible, examples of performers and their work are provided.

A story behind an Amazonian theme Parintins Folk Festival leads a way toward the investigation of the pragmatic possibilities of a proposal that avoids the objective and distant posture or the possible objectivity such as said in the journalistic stylebooks. This thesis searches a strategy, named transubjectivity, which reinforces the dialogue and tries to articulate in the report the objective, subjective, intersubjective and normative aspects (as Habermas points). To achieve this goal it is needed to recognize the subjective impulse which leads to the genesis of the report without the author becoming the center of the narrative; being respectful beyond the ethical/normative rules of the profession; making reference to the real by deepening the questions Who? What? When? Where? How? Why? and practicing intersubjectivity in social mediation, in order to comprehend the ones who act in the current collective experience.

Le vague - De l’usage évaluatif d’un terme en français et en allemand à la reconstruction d’un concept / Vaguenness - from the evaluative use of an expression in French and German to the reconstruction of a concept / Vagheit - Vom evaluierenden Gebrauch eines Ausdrucks im Französischen und Deutschen zur Rekonstruktion eines BegriffsBrunner, Pascale 05 December 2011 (has links)
The aim of this research is to outline the concept of VAGUENESS in ordinary discourse by analyzing the uses of the adjectives vague in French and vage in German employed by speakers encountering an expression or an utterance they judge vague. The data consist of newspaper articles containing value judgments like “c’est vague” (it’s vague), “réponse vague” (vague answer), “expression vague” (vague expression), etc. By means of a qualitative and inductive method, this study acknowledges a special interest in ordinary speakers’ metalinguistic evaluative statements and attempts to determine the different meanings and functions attached to those evaluating terms. It will be shown that the use of the words vague/vage may point out a lack of information, a high degree of abstractness or a problem of multi-referentiality of the expression being judged; it is also possible to make assumptions about the pragmatic functions those judgments are fulfilling, such as, for instance, disqualifying one’s opponent, a common strategy in political debate situations. Inspired by Folk Linguistic studies, this thesis distinguishes itself from logical- and philosophical approaches as well as from the methodology of some pragmatic researches about vagueness and, in so doing, endeavors to contribute to a larger definition of the concept.

Dialogues between a violin and a body : How to be a dancing musician on stage ?Genet, Coline January 2021 (has links)
The folk tradition has often been divided between two sections: on one side is music,on the other is dance. The aim of this research is to study the relationships between dance and music inside one individual to create a new profile: the dancing musician. The process of this research went through different stages. First of all, I relied on my background as a folk musician and dancer to enable dialogue between these two profiles. Then I went beyond the boundaries of the folk tradition by mixing improvisation and folk music. Finally, I analysed movements, meters and expression of each part in order to combine them and to resolve technical issues of the multitasking process. The present study shows different ways of using this dance-music combination as a creative tool and explains what effects those arts have on each other.
