Factorial linear model analysis

Brien, Christopher James January 1992 (has links)
This thesis develops a general strategy for factorial linear model analysis for experimental and observational studies. It satisfactorily deals with a number of issues that have previously caused problems in such analyses. The strategy developed here is an iterative, four-stage, model comparison procedure as described in Brien (1989); it is a generalization of the approach of Nelder (1965a,b). The approach is applicable to studies characterized as being structure-balanced, multitiered and based on Tjur structures unless the structure involves variation factors when it must be a regular Tjur structure. It covers a wide range of experiments including multiple-error, change-over, two-phase, superimposed and unbalanced experiments. Examples illustrating this are presented. Inference from the approach is based on linear expectation and variation models and employs an analysis of variance. The sources included in the analysis of variance table is based on the division of the factors, on the basis of the randomization employed in the study, into sets called tiers. The factors are also subdivided into expectation factors and variation factors. From this subdivision models appropriate to the study can be formulated and the expected mean squares based on these models obtained. The terms in the expectation model may be nonorthogonal and the terms in the variation model may exhibit a certain kind of nonorthogonal variation structure. Rules are derived for obtaining the sums of squares, degrees of freedom and expected mean squares for the class of studies covered. The models used in the approach make it clear that the expected mean squares depend on the subdivision into expectation and variation factors. The approach clarifes the appropriate mean square comparisons for model selection. The analysis of variance table produced with the approach has the advantage that it will reflect all the relevant physical features of the study. A consequence of this is that studies, in which the randomization is such that their confounding patterns differ, will have different analysis of variance tables. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Department of Plant Science, 1992.

Balladspår i modern svensk litteratur : Intertextuella influenser

Schrevelius, Ally January 2008 (has links)

The purpose of this study is to investigate the distribution of medieval ballads as semiotics of intertextuality in modern Swedish literature, here represented by August Strindberg, Erik Axel Karlfeldt, Kerstin Ekman and Katarina Frostenson. They are famous authors from different epochs, ranging from the period called “the modern breakthrough” in the 1880s until the postmodernism of the present time. My aim is to expose their attraction to medieval balladry, and their different ways of using form, language and style from this old poetry in poems, prose and plays, explicit as well as implicit.

O Cheiro de Deus e o chiste de Roberto Drummond: fórmulas tradicionais de um romance contemporâneo e brasileiro / The smell of God and the joke of Roberto Drummond : traditional formulae of a contemporany brazilian novel

Renan Ji 25 March 2010 (has links)
The author creates an epic that simulates, in a modern perspective, the classic genre of narrative, but preserving the popular and contemporary origins of the Brazilian writer. The approach of this novel is divided into two axis: one is dedicated to the classic and mythological sources; the other regards the interventions of the popular tradition with which the erudite paradigm reconfigures. The first chapter leads with the images present in the novel, establishing ground on the various trends of the myth studies, as well on the mediation of the epic paradigm, systematically described by Emil Staiger. The axis dedicated to the canon ends with a philosophical and aesthetic reflection about literary forms and genres, based on the considerations of Friedrich Nietzsche and Mikhail Bakhtin. The second chapter proceeds with the investigation of the popular vein, introduced in the fictional system by three different strategies: the reference to other forms of art, the laughter and the olfactory metaphor present in the title. Seen separately, 1- the aesthetic references from other forms of art allow to comprehend the link between the naivety of Roberto Drummonds representations and naïf painting; the overwhelming tendency to sentimentalism to emotional gesture, and melodrama; the concept of emotional formulae or Pathosformeln (Aby Warburg) and the power of popular imaginary in the novel. 2- The categories of laughter, with emphasis on the freudian theory of the joke, reveal the strategies of the discourse engaged in sabotaging its interdictions. 3- Smell of God as metaphor synthesizes all the lines of thought developed earlier, whereas it configures itself as the cosmological factor of the story. In this manner, the classic and epic inspiration, under the influence of the laughter and popular art expressions, generates more then an exotic, irreverent and naïf literary piece, like the ones that usually identifies the peculiar style of the author: it turns this novel into a project of fictional creation that has no naivety at all, commanded by the olfactory metaphor. This dissertation, therefore, investigates how these two antithetical and complementary axis activate traditional and present formulas of representation, supporting the evanescent, divine and literary high spheres, as well the habitus of contemporary casualness and superficiality in Drummonds novel. The simple and powerful methaphor of the smell of God translates such convergence

Also conducted a follow-up of professionals involved in the preparation and distribution of infant formula, through verification of good handling practices on lactaries room, as well as evaluation of the hygienic conditions of the hands and nasal pits. 640 samples were obtained considering the two stages of the study, so before and after training in best practices for handlers involved. These samples for microbiological determinations coliforms at 35 °C and 45 °C, coagulase positive staphylococci, Bacillus cereus, Salmonella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and mesophilic aerobic microorganisms, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were performed. Presence of P. aeruginosa was observed in a sample of water and another of aerobic mesophilic. All samples of infant formula milk powder proved adequate to consume according to current legal resolution, but a sample of them, reconstituted, presented coliform count at 35 °C above the limit allowed by law. There was an improvement in the microbiological profile of respondents between the two stages of the research vessels, being statistically significant at 35 °C for coliforms and P. aeruginosa. Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus in nasal cavity and hands of food handlers were found. None of lactaries surveyed during the study demonstrated satisfactory level of compliance against the current health legislation after application of the checklist in good handling practices. Even after training several nonconformities relating the adjustments set was identified. With this study it was concluded that the infant formula infants were offered to secure the microbiological point of view. Good manufacturing practices and training tools can be permanent improvement in sanitary hygienic control in the food production process. We need better public policies to develop, oversee and implement effective legislation to health services, as well as ensure the sanitary quality of food to the population.

Spektraltheorie gewöhnlicher linearer Differentialoperatoren vierter Ordnung / Spectral Analysis of Fourth Order Differential Operators

Abels, Otto 25 July 2001 (has links)
In this thesis the spectral properties of differential operators generated by the formally self-adjoint differential expression Τy = w⁻₁[(ry″)″ - (py′)′ + qy] are investigated. The main tools to be used are the theory of asymptotic integration and the Titchmarsh--Weyl M-matrix. Subject to certain regularity conditions on the coefficients asymptotic integration leads to estimates for the eigenfunctions of the corresponding differential equation Τy = zy. According to the theory of asymptotic integration the regularity conditions combine smoothness with decay, i.e. admissible coefficients are (in an appropriate sense) either short range or slowly varying. Knowledge of the asymptotics (x → ∞) of the solutions will then be used to determine the deficiency index and to derive properties of the M-matrix which is closely related to the spectral measure of an associated self-adjoint realization Τ. Consequently we can compute the multiplicity of the spectrum, locate the absolutely continuous spectrum and give conditions for the singular continuous spectrum to be empty. This generalizes classical results on second order operators.
