Kärleken till Frank under narratologisk lupp : En analys av Nancy Horans debutroman

Ekdahl, Ida January 2009 (has links)

Hur ser fokalisationen ut i romanen? Deltar berättaren som en karaktär i romanen, eller är den dold? Uppsatsen inriktar sig alltså på studiet av berättarkonsten, narrationen i Kärleken till Frank.

In Praise of Music: A Motivation for Choral Conductors

Keating, Gary E 03 May 2011 (has links)
"In Praise of Music": A Motivation for Choral Conductors, is a conductor’s survey of four contemporary works for chorus all titled "In Praise of Music." This study was created in tandem with the recital presentation of two of the works by composers David Conte and David Frank Long and an additional two works by Keith Bissell and Paul Hindemith. Each work is different in style, in the choice of text, in accompaniment, and in the choral forces required. There is no single text titled "In Praise of Music" from which each composer might have begun the creative process. What binds these works together is the concept that music carries emotion and shares it with those who hear it. Bissell requires orchestra, an Orff instrument ensemble, satb mixed chorus and women’s chorus in his music with texts from four different poets: Alfred, Lord Tennyson; John Dryden; William Shakespeare; and Robert Herrick. David Conte’s work is set for chorus, six soloists, semi-chorus, and orchestra. Conte also chose the texts for his work from three poets; Thomas Carew, John Dryden, and Percy Bysshe Shelley. Paul Hindemith’s work, set to a text by Martin Luther, offers many different performance options as it is meant to be performed by non-professional musicians and singers, using whoever might be available. "Our Song (In Praise of Music)" was commissioned by this writer for his D.M.A recital performance. Composer David Frank Long wrote both the text and music for the work. The essay includes biographical information on each composer and poet and the texts used for each work. There is also a structural chart and compositional analysis of each work.

Om femme fatalen i Lulu. En monstertragedi : En läsning med Butler, Riviere och Lacan

Jennefelt, Maria January 2007 (has links)
This essay examine the femme fatal and the head character in the play Lulu Eine Monstretra gödie by Frank Wedekind. I have studied Lulu, who would be classified as a femme fatal, in terms to see what kind of woman’s portrait a femme fatal is. I will show with the theories of Judith Butler, Jacques Lacan and Joan Riviere how the femme fatal can be seen as a construc-tion, a role done by men. As well as a strong self owned woman. I will also discuss other con-cepts like femme-inism. My aim with this analysis is not to show one, but many different ways of looking at the femme fatal.

Will Dodd-Frank and Basel III Prevent Another Recession? Curbing Leverage and Promoting Effective Risk Management Beyond Capital Requirements

Walker, Nina A 01 January 2013 (has links)
Dodd-Frank represents a federal intervention in corporate governance, which had previously been an issue for the states. The most prominent state in this respect is Delaware because of its favorable treatment of corporate interests.Although Delaware’s regulations are too lenient to encourage responsible risk management practices, the federal law is normally driven by populist outrage and anti-corporate sentiments that impair lawmakers’ abilities to write rational, efficient reforms. The climate of political pressure does not foster a thoughtful review of the best ways to affect risk management practices. This paper thus explores the role of leverage in the financial crisis, the shortcomings of Dodd-Frank’s capital requirements, the ways in which reform could have encouraged more responsible leverage positions, and the nature of federal corporate governance regulation.

Victory in Vietnam Committee's Manichean rhetoric : an analysis of the campaign to recall Idaho Senator Frank Church

Andrews, Cheri L. 05 May 1992 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to illuminate the role, the function, and the ironic outcome of the Victory in Vietnam Committee's campaign pamphlet to recall Senator Frank Church of Idaho in 1967. The VVC's political strategy was to build credibility with the media through the recall pamphlet. The analysis of the recall pamphlet shows the failure of the Victory in Vietnam Committee to adapt to the intended audience, the media. The pamphlet is further evaluated in the context of manichean rhetoric to highlight the unethical use of credibility building techniques and the ultimate goal of the VVC to stifle Church's dissent with respect to the Vietnam War. The irony of the Victory in Vietnam Committee's explanatory pamphlet is that instead of helping to oust Church by exposing his faults, it caused the downfall of the Victory in Vietnam Committee. / Graduation date: 1992

Short-Term Stock Market Response to “Say On Pay” Failed Votes

Beckerman, Drew M 01 January 2012 (has links)
The Say on Pay vote, part of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act signed into law by Barack Obama in July 2010, is a non-binding vote that either approves or disapproves of the compensation given to Named Executive Officers. As of June 21, 2012, there have been 103 companies that have failed to reach 50% approval in this vote. For this paper I analyze the 103 companies over event windows of two, four, and ten days around the date of the failure to test for statistically significant abnormal stock market returns. None of the average cumulative abnormal returns for the three event windows are significant at any level, and I find no evidence that failing the Say on Pay vote corresponds to an increase or decrease in stock market returns.

The Fundamental Naturalistic Impulse: Extending the Reach of Methodological Naturalism

Summers, James B 15 March 2011 (has links)
While naturalistic theories have come to dominate the philosophical landscape, there is still little consensus on what “naturalism” means. I trace the origins of contemporary naturalism to a view, called the “fundamental naturalistic impulse,” that originates in Quine’s turn against Carnap and which I take to be necessary for naturalism. In light of this impulse, some “substantively naturalistic” theories are examined: a weak version of non-supernaturalism, Railton’s a posteriori reduction of moral terms, and “Canberra plan” conceptual analyses of moral property terms. I suggest that if we take the fundamental naturalistic impulse seriously, then there is no need to differentiate substantive versions of naturalism over and above methodological versions. Substantive thesis in ontology or semantics can be had on account of one’s methodological commitments. This not only cuts against the distinction between methodological and substantive naturalisms, but also demonstrates just how far method can reach.

Det är ju bara serier : En studie om journalistik i grafiska noveller / It´s just comics : A study of journalism in graphic novels

Lindahl, Christopher, Ankersen, Dag January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to study how journalism is represented in graphic novels, what roles are represented and if journalism in graphic novels is good or evil. The goal was also to see if there were any similarities or differences over a period of time. This was done with a qualitative analysis of two graphic novels written and drawn by Frank Miller. When we did the analysis we focused on pictures and texts that directly had a connection to the journalistic role. We used a semiotic approach to analyze the two graphic novels were our main focus where on what connotation, what denotation and what stereotypes could be found. This study establishes that stereotypes are used to represent journalism in a negative way. Journalists are also the cause of more harm than good. When you put journalism into the narrative technique of good versus evil they are clearly evil and use their power to undermine the heroes of the story. The journalists are put into stereotypical roles such as the female news reporter who is all looks and no brain, or the overzealous male reporter who tries to tell the truth but no one will listen to him. It is also clear that journalism is represented in a way that describes it as a phenomenon that spreads panic because the journalists in many cases come to their own conclusions without having all the facts. The study also shows that over a period of fifteen years the role of the journalist is the same but the way they are represented is very different. Because of the larger rivalry from other news sources the media is forced to find new ways to attract an audience. Therefore the newer graphic novel portrays a sexualisation of the journalistic role.

A colloidal nanoparticle form of indium tin oxide: system development and characterization

Gilstrap, Richard Allen, Jr. 06 April 2009 (has links)
A logical progression from the maturing field of colloidal semiconductor quantum dots to the emerging subclass of impurity-doped colloidal semiconductor nanoparticles is underway. To this end, the present work describes the formation and analysis of a new form of Tin-doped Indium Oxide (ITO). The form is that of a colloidal dispersion comprised of pure-phase, 4-6 nanometer ITO particles possessing an essentially single crystalline character. This system forms a non-agglomerated, optically clear solution in a variety of non-polar solvents and can remain in this state, at room temperature, for months and potentially, years. ITO is the most widely used member of the exotic materials family known as Transparent Conductive Oxides (TCOs) and is the primary enabling material behind a wide variety of opto-electronic device technologies. Material synthesis was achieved by initiating a series of interrelated nucleophilic substitution reactions that provided sufficient intensity to promote doping efficiencies greater than 90% for a wide range of tin concentrations. The optical clarity of this colloidal system allowed the intrinsic properties of single crystalline ITO particles to be evaluated prior to their use in thin-films or composite structures. Monitoring the temporal progression of n-type degeneracy by its effects on the optical properties of colloidal dispersions shed light on the fundamental issues of particle formation, band filling (Burstein-Moss) dynamics, and the very origin of n-type degeneracy in ITO. Central to these studies was the issue of excess electron character. The two limiting cases of entirely free and entirely confined electron motion were evaluated by application of bulk-like band dispersion analysis and the effective mass approximation, respectively. This provided a means to estimate the number of excess conduction band electrons present within an individual particle boundary. The ability to control and optimize the level of n-type degeneracy within the colloidal ITO nanoparticle form by compositional variation was also demonstrated. A key to the widespread adoption of a new material by industry is an ability to produce multi-gram and perhaps, kilogram quantities with no significant sacrifice in quality. Accordingly, a modified synthesis process was developed to allow for the mass production of high-quality colloidal ITO nanocrystals.
