In 1844, the discovery of Diamonds in Chapada Diamantina turned that region, previously sparsely populated, in one of the most dynamic areas of the province of the state of Bahia. The attention attracted by precious stones enabled from an active trade, supported by supplies networks that connected the region to the coast to the hinterlands of the province of Bahia, to neighboring provinces, as well as it has established several connections between Chapada Diamantina and other countries. It was used a widely hand-slave labor in all sectors of the economy, specially mining activities. Slaves from different places were targeted to Lençóis, most Africans landed in Bahia in the last years of the slave trade as well. Individuals living restrictions on graduates from captivity in the province of Bahia or even in neighboring provinces realized that race to mine a chance to better living. These are stories that allow us to observe, among other things: the daily lives of slaves in Chapada Diamantina; possibilities of ascent, the dynamics of transatlantic traffic, the transit of prisoners between slavery and freedom; establishing affective ties; diffusion networks solidarity, the extensive use of slave labor etc. Based on this plot, this essay proposes to examine the survival strategies, networks of personal relationships, family, ethnic, and different forms of solidarity among slaves and freedmen in Lençóis during the age of diamonds.

It is therefore not openly accessible, though it may be available by request. If you are the author or principal advisor of this work and would like to request open access for it, please contact us at open-help@bu.edu. Thank you. / We investigate aspects of differential K-theory. In particular, we give a direct proof that the Freed-Lott differential analytic index is well defined, and a short proof of the differential Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem in the setting of Freed-Lott differential K-theory. We also construct explicit ring isomorphisms between Freed-Lott differential K-theory and Simons-Sullivan differential K-theory, define the Simons-Sullivan differential analytic index, and prove the differential Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem in the setting of Simons-Sullivan differential K-theory. / 2031-01-02

Discussions on Dai-Freed Anomalies

Li, Huaiyu January 2019 (has links)
In both field theories of high energy physics and field theories of condensed matter theories anomalies have been imposing constraints and bringing up new theories. While the perturbational and local anomalies from triangle diagrams are well-developed, we follow and review two works leading to non-perturbational global anomalies both related with Atiyah-Patogi-Sieger (APS) index theorem. In the context of topological fieldtheories the APS index theorem imposes an η-invariant which adds a global anomalous e−iπη/2 to the path integral from each fermions on the boundary. In the case of Pin+ (4) this will require a multiple of 16 Majorana fermions for the global anomaly to cancel. On the other hand with Dai-Freed theorem, global ’t Hooft anomalies concerned to G symmetry group on 4-dimensional spin manifold which is also classifying space BG are studied. The existence of anomalies are related to the triviality of spin bordismgroup Ω Spin5(BG), where examples with SU(2), GSM and Zn are studied with Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence method and representation of Z n rings. Further there are extensions of spin groups from Pin, SpinZ4 and Spinc , where the anomaly cancellationconstraint of 16 fermions per generation from Spin Z 4 (4) is related to that of Pin + (4) in topological superconductor. A possible candidate of Z4 charge named B − L charge or X charge from several commutative breaking patterns of Spin(10) GUT is briefly discussed with Pati-Salam model and R ⊗ C ⊗ H ⊗ O.

The cultural reform project of northern teachers of the freed people, 1862-1870

Patterson, James Paul 01 July 2012 (has links)
This study is a qualitative, historical examination of the diaries, journals, and letters of twenty-four northern teachers of former African American slaves. The study analyzes the cultural reform project carried out by these and other northern teachers working in the American South during the Civil War and early Reconstruction periods (roughly 1862 to 1870). The sample includes both black and white teachers as well as teachers who conceptualized their work in the South primarily in secular terms and--more commonly--in both secular and religious terms. After providing an overview of the work and situating it within the historiography of the teachers of the freed people, the study explores the sense of mission of each of the twenty-four teachers and examines the influence of white racism and black agency on northern reform efforts during this period. The bulk of the work addresses the teachers' perceptions of and efforts to reform the cultural condition of the former slaves. These reforms attempted to foster intellectual development through classroom education; provide material relief and instill personal habits of cleanliness, tidiness, and healthy living; encourage the former slaves to take up the duties and rights of citizenship; and influence the course of southern black religion. A brief conclusion summarizes the themes of the work and evaluates the success and appropriateness of the teachers' agenda. The study finds that while the teachers in the sample varied in their motivations and their conceptualizations of the work, as a group they had a comprehensive and remarkably consistent cultural reform agenda designed to reshape the life of southern blacks along northern lines and that this agenda sometimes aligned and sometimes conflicted with southern blacks' own goals and aspirations.

From Freedom In Africa To Enslavement, And Once Again Freedom, In Brazil: Constructing The Lives Of African Libertos In Nineteenth-century Salvador Da Bahia Through The Analysis Of Post-mortem Testaments

Unknown Date (has links)
This dissertation analyzes the wills left behind by African-born ex-slaves in nineteenth-century Salvador in order to shed light on the lives that they led in the Bahian capital upon their arrival as slaves from Africa, and upon the re-acquisition of their freedom through the alforria system. The material assets and the slave ownership of libertos are studied in depth, as well as their religiosity, and the larger world and networks within which they operated in their Brazilian lives, with a specific eye towards African agency and processes of community formation. The qualitative and in-depth study of post-mortem testaments and inventories as meaningful texts in their own right provides the opportunity to decipher the individual voices of freed Africans, as well as to acquire insight into their Bahian worlds. The relationships, affective ties, and kinship networks of libertos, as well as their efforts to exercise agency and deliberation over their own lives, and the lives of others to whom they were connected, also become evident in the process. The testaments also make it possible to acquire a deeper understanding of African cosmologies in Brazil, through the ways in which libertos understood the passage from the worldly life to the afterlife, the meanings they gave to death, to funerals and other last rites. Understandings of justice, legality, and honor also come to the forefront, while the complex context of nineteenth century Bahia (and Brazil in general) constitutes the constant backdrop against which all these discussions acquire meaning. Understanding the lives, belief systems, and connections of African libertos also has important repercussions for understanding the experiences of Africans and their descendants in slave societies all over the Atlantic World. Insights deriving from the in-depth analysis of libertos’ wills have important implications for furthering our knowledge with regards to the Atlantic slave trade, slave ownership, and enslavement, as well as processes of identity and community formation, retention, adaptation, and resistance in the African Diaspora as a whole. / acase@tulane.edu

The study focuses on the first half of the nineteenth century, the initial stage of the process of building the foundations of the nation state. We seek to cast eyes on the Mariana term in an attempt to understand to what extent the process of schooling of free blacks and freed occurred in that context, was related to the experience of citizenship was being built in the Brazilian context during the Empire. Public education as a civil right, and the experience of free and freed through education led us to forge interpretations of the nature of the nation-state that was intended to form. The existence of civil equality, which comes from 1824 with the Constitution, in that it is incorporated in a society marked by slavery and by strong tensions of racial nature, rather than generate greater social equality, eventually constituting, so sui generis, in contributing factor to greater complexity of social hierarchies. These were, largely, from a fundamental need of social groups affected by the racial question, namely, to get away from the stigma of slavery, using capacity as members of civil society. In this context, access `training in imperial society by blacks contributed not only to the legitimacy but especially with the complexity of social hierarchies in society, always looking to get away from the stigma of slavery.
