Além disso, verificou-se implicações semiológicas, psicolingüísticas, fonética e fonológica, e terapêutica dos problemas de produção de fala / Abstract: The present study investigates the establishment of contrast between the fricatives /s/ and /'INT'/ in children who are speakers of Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and presented or not impairment phonological. The starting point is a review of the
traditional literature on the perspectives of development, which tries to explain the establishment of this contrast by children and to interpret the so-called speech production errors commonly present in the age considered here. The interpretation of speech production errors given by the traditional perspectives is reconsidered and criticized here mainly because of their methodology and theoretical model. Our hypothesis is that children experience different ways of marking the phonic distinctions which are perceived by them, producing gradient forms (that is, intermediate productions) many times during the process of acquisition. In order to
interpret the establishment of the distinction between /s/ and /'INT'/ when children are trying to produce and use the contrast, and also considering their intuition about language, we take into account a dynamic perspective of the development combined with an instrumental methodology which acoustically analyzes the children's productions. Two analyzes were carried out: the first one is related to the speech production and the second one is related to the speech perception. The first part of this study, on speech production, analyzed the speech of six children of both sex, aged between five and seven years old. Three of them presented
hearing complaints and three of them didn't present any kind of hearing complaint. Six dissyllable words, accented on the second syllable and containing the fricatives /s/ and /'INT'/ produced before /i/, /a/ and /u/, were selected and pronounced during the production of the same sentence. Each child repeated each sentence ten times. The parameters adopted during the analyses were: 1) the acoustical characteristics of the fricative noise, 2) the acoustical characteristics of the adjacent vowels, and 3) acoustical parameters related to the temporal pattern of the speech production. One of the main results of this part of the study was the demonstration of the existence of intermediate productions between /s/ and /'INT'/ in children who presented hearing complaints, what suggests the incomplete acquisition of this phonic contrast. Moreover, the acoustical parameters related to the temporal pattern, specially the tax of formant change, indicated that children which present hearing complaints need a major time to perform a determined task of speech production, that is, these children present a lesser speed of the movements of articulators when compared to the children who doesn't appear to have any hearing complaints. The second part of this study, on speech perception, investigated the perceptual consequences of the presence of phonic gradients and also tried to comprehend the relation between speech production and perception. Thirty five subjects, divided in three groups (adults and children with and without hearing complaints), participated of an identification experiment which used 1) typical stimuli (categorical productions of /s/ and /'INT'/) and 2) intermediate stimuli (gradient productions of /s/ and /'INT'/). The results suggest that there is an intrinsic relation between speech production and perception. Moreover, such results point out the need for a non-reductionistic explanation of the incomplete acquisition of the phonic contrast between /s/ and /'INT'/, analyzing production and perception together instead of focusing on one or another. We purpose, then, that the dynamical nature of speech production must be taking into account and, by implication, a dynamical perspective of development in the studies related to the acquisition of phonic contrast must be adopted. In addition, it was also possible to identify different kinds of implications, that are, semiological, psycholinguistical, phonetical, phonological and also theurapeutical, to the problems of speech production / Doutorado / Doutor em Linguística

Previous issue date: 2015-12-15 / Based on the Speech Learning Model (FLEGE, 1995) – SLM – and on the Perceptual Assimilation Model for L2 Learning (BEST; TYLER, 2007) – PAM-L2 – and also the definition of perception (STRANGE, SHAFER, 2008) – ASP – in which they have contributed for L2 learning concerning the perceptual of non-native sounds. Moreover, this paper has the objective of investigating the perception of the dental fricative //, that is not present on Portuguese phonological system (henceforth L1), by native speakers of L1, studying English as L2. As this sound is not part of the Portuguese consonant system, learners tend to perceive this sound based on the categories they have in their L1. Thereby, taking into account the theoretical models proposed by Flege (1995), Best & Tyler (2007) and Strange & Shafer (2008), it is believed that learners when they face with sounds in the L2, in which there is not correspondence in their L1, they tend to find a similar sound already categorized in their L1 system. Besides that, factors such as age of acquisition and frequency in which learners use this L2 are present in the process, as well as the learning in formal or informal context. In order to verify these topics, there were selected learners of English as L2 from three different levels of an English school from Pelotas: basic, intermediate and advanced levels, in which two were males and two were females for each level, totalizing twelve subjects. Regarding the sound mentioned, it is presumed that // is perceived based on closer learners’ L1 sounds. In this case, the fricatives /s/, /f/ or even the plosive /t/. Regarding these factors, one test was applied with Portuguese native speakers in learning stages of English as L2 with the purpose of verifying the change pattern these subjects had. Thereafter, the identification test was applied to these informants, in which the target sound // was in initial and final position in the words. This test was applied through specific software developed with the intention of helping researches on perception. Thereupon the applied test, the data was collected to make the quantitative and qualitative analysis. According to the results, it was observed that the learners have difficulty in categorizing the fricative // and independent category.

Nasalância na presença e ausência da fricativa faríngea / Nasalance at presence and absence of pharyngeal fricativeGuerra, Thaís Alves 28 July 2014 (has links)
Objective: This study had the objectives of establishing a data bank of speech recordings representative of use of pharyngeal fricative compensatory articulation (PF); presence and absence of hypernasality; identifying nasalance values (mean and standard deviation for the samples studied; and comparing nasalance finding among the different speech samples established. Method: A total of 1680 speech samples were recorded from 19 individuals with cleft lip and palate (CLP), 11 with velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD) and 8 without VPD, and from 5 individuals without history of CLP. The participants repeated a series of 14 phrases (13 with high pressure consonants and 1 with a low pressure consonant), while audio and nasometric data was simultaneously recorded. The audio signals captures were edited and rated by 3 experienced judges with 100% agreement. After the ratings the samples were distributed into 4 groups (G): G1 included 255 samples rated as representative of presence of hypernasality; G2 included 130 samples rated as representative of use of PF and hypernasality; G3 included 280 samples rated as representative of normal speech (without PF and without hypernasality) for speakers with history of cleft palate; G4 included 175 samples rated as representative of normal speech (without PF and without hypernasality) for speakers without history of cleft palate. Results: The ratings established with agreement by the 3 judges during auditory-perceptual analysis of the recordings responded to objectives this study which proposed to establish samples representative of use of PF and of presence and absence of hypernasality. The samples rated by the judges were distributed into the four groups of interest for calculation of the nasalance scores, The Kruskal-Wallis statistical test was used to test the hypothesis that presence of PF, with or without hypernasality significantly would affect nasalance scores. When significant difference was found Dunns test was used to compared data in group pairs. After inferential statistics we observed that a significant difference was found between nasalance scores for groups G1 and G2 (samples representative of speech errors) with groups G3 and G4 (samples representative of normal speech). The difference between the group with hypernasality (G1) and the group with PF (G2) was not significant. Conclusion: The use of PF did not significantly influence nasalance values for the studied sample, refuting the proposed hypothesis.

Previous issue date: 2014-08-27 / CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This dissertation aims to investigate, from the perspective of Dialectology in its method Geolinguistic, of Variationist Sociolinguistics and of Natural Phonology (Stampe, 1973), the occurrence of the phonetic-phonological phenomenon of substitution of other fricatives by the glottal fricative [h, ɦ] in the manauara speech. This paperwork was developed through literature and field research. In field research, interviews with 24 informants were conducted, taking into account, among other selection criteria, gender (male; female), age group (18-35 years-old; 36-55 years-old; 56 years-old or more) and education (up to primary; higher education, graduated or not) as to verify the possible influence of these extralinguistic factors in the choice of variants by informants. The interviews were composed of responses to a phonetic-phonological questionnaire (PPQ), sentences reading and text reading. Later, the phonetic transcription and analysis of the data collected were conducted. The results show that: a) linguistically, only the consonant [f] was not substituted in the speech of any of the informants, while all the others have been substituted more or less frequently, being [s] and [ʃ] (in concurrent position) the most substituted ones; b) extralinguisticaly, the phenomenon occurred in more the speech of men than in women, more in the third age group than in the first and second, respectively, and more among the informants of the first level of education than in the second.

Previous issue date: 2016-12-22 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES# / #2075167498588264571# / #600 / The present dissertation aims at describing acoustically the coronal fricative /s/ of Brazilian
Portuguese spoken in the city of Pelotas. The focus is to determining the acoustic
characteristics of this consonant in different syllabic positions in order to verify how acoustic
properties may explain its behavior in the coda position. The studies regarding the Syllable
Theory were one of the motives behind the research, and the Acoustic Theory of Speech
Production served as the theoretical foundation of this study. The experiment of speech
production controlled the fricative in different contexts, controlling following and previous
vowel and consonantal context of voiceless and voiced occlusives. The stress pattern of the
syllable in which /s/ was placed and gender of the participants were also considered for the
analysis. Four volunteers, born and living in Pelotas, between the ages 30 and 50 years, with
university degrees and monolingual, participated in this research. The data was collected in
soundproof booth, and the acoustic analysis was performed using Praat (BOERSMA;
WEENINK, 2001). The parameters considered for the analysis of the fricative included
duration and four spectral moments: center of gravity, standard deviation or variance,
skewness and kurtosis, which were analyzed separately for each context in which the fricative
was inserted. The results suggest that the fricative /s/ behaves differently depending on
syllable position and context in which it is. This, it can be argued that the segment seeks to
adjust to the syllabic position of coda, even though the feature sonorant sets it apart from the
other licensed consonants for the coda position in Brazilian Portuguese.
O experimento apresentou a fricativa

Previous issue date: 2013-03-07 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The present study aims to understand the dialectal accommodation process of paraibanos who live in Recife (PE), based on Communication Accommodation Theory (GILES et al., 1987) and in the theoretical-methodological contributions of the Variation Theory (LABOV, 1996; 1972). The phonological phenomenon which will allow us to check the accommodation effects is the realization of coronal fricative /S/ in coda position by the fact that this segment clearly marks the difference between the dialects under study. The corpus was constituted by 9 paraibanos informants residing for at least two years in Recife. The collected data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The quantitative analysis enabled us to identify statistically the factors that are contributing to the accommodation, while the qualitative analysis enabled us the interpretation of subjective data that contributed to the accommodation of the new dialect or the preservation of the dialect of origin. The statistical treatment realized through Goldvarb X (SANKOFF, TAGLIAMONTE & SMITH, 2005) showed, in increasing order of significance, which the most relevant variables were: permanence time, amount of exposure to dialect, following phonological context, the style and the frequency of visits. The qualitative analysis developed through the participants speech allowed us identify the linguistics attitude of the informants. We realized that positive evaluation influenced the linguistic accommodation even as the negative evaluation led them to preserve their dialect of origin as a way of distancing.

Previous issue date: 2016-11-14 / The primary objective of the present study is to analyze how listeners perceive the alveolar and palatal variants of /S/ in medial coda in their speech community (i) observing if the palatal/alveolar contrast is perceived in a different way, in a numerical scale, in different following phonetic-phonological contexts; (ii) verifying if listeners from João Pessoa are aware of the behavior of the variant in their own dialect; in other words, if they perceive what variant they use in relation to several following contexts; and (iii) verifying if the listeners from João Pessoa have a dialectal identity in relation to the behavior of the fricative in coda in João Pessoa, that is, if they believe that their pronunciation corresponds to the preferred one of their speech community in relation to the analyzed process. For that, three experiments of perception were developed and applied to listeners from João Pessoa: the first one consists of a task of identifying how different would be two productions of a same word in relation to /S/ in medial coda; the second one was to choose which of the two productions sounded more similar to the way people from João Pessoa speak; and the third one was to answer which of the two productions sounded more similar to the way the speaker himself/herself speaks. The stimuli were recorded by a speaker from João Pessoa. She is an undergraduate student in the 15-25 years age group. After recording the words in isolation, the files were matched to the pairs of stimuli that were presented to listeners through the website. The statistical analyses to test the hypotheses were carried out using the software R (R Core Team, 2013) from the subjects’ answers. The most relevant results were: (a) listeners attribute the same degree of difference to the pair of fricatives independently of the following context; (b) they are aware of the fricative’s behavior of João Pessoa’s dialect; and (c) there is identification between these speakers and the dialect of their speech community regarding the palatalization of coronal fricative. In order to develop the tests and to formulate hypotheses it was took into account studies concerning acoustic characteristics of fricatives in data of production and perception (KENT & READ, 1992; JONGMAN et al., 2000; JESUS, 1999; HAUPT, 2007; FERREIRA-SILVA et al., 2015; HENRIQUE et al., 2015), data of studies that analyzed the behavior of /S/ in coda in dialects of Brazil (CALLOU; LEITE; MORAES, 2002; BRESCANCINI, 2002, 2003; HORA, 2003, 2011; RIBEIRO, 2006; LIMA, 2013; LOPES, 2012) and the framework of the theory of linguistic variation and change (WEINREICH, LABOV & HERZOG, 1968; LABOV, 1972; ECKERT, 2008, 2012).

Previous issue date: 2009-03-26 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The present paper takes into account the Variation Theory, proposed in the 60 s by the
linguist William Labov, to explain the palatalization phenomenon on /S/ fricative in coda
position in the speech community of Macapá-AP. Recognizing the language variability, many
studies have been carried out in order to identify, describe and explain the linguistics
phenomena which occur in Brazilian Portuguese. The /S/ palatalization phenomenon, for
example, is a process which had been object of study in speeches of diferent regions in Brazil:
Rio de Janeiro-RJ (CALLOU & MARQUES, 1975); Natal-RN (PESSOA,1986); Recife-PE,
Salvador-BA e Rio de Janeiro-RJ (CALLOU & MORAES, 1996); Corumbá-MS (SILVA,
1996); João Pessoa-PB (HORA, 2000); Salvador-BA (CANOVAS, 1996); Rio de Janeiro-RJ
(SCHERRE & MACEDO, 2000); Cordeiro-RJ (GRYNER & MACEDO, 2000);
Florianópolis-SC (BRESCANCINI, 2002); Recife-PE (MACEDO, 2004), demonstrating that
this is a recurrent phenomenon in Brazilian Portuguese. Thus, from the supposition that the
heterogeneity of spoken language can be systematized, and considering the coronal anterior
fricative palatalization in sylable endings as a phenomenon that can be explained from a
Variationist perspective, we intend, through this research, to trace the linguistic profile of a
speaker from Macapá-AP, in relation to the studied phenomenon, taking into account the
social factors (exterior factors) and the structural factors (interior factors) which are involved
in that process. In order to accomplish our main goal, we attempt to present in a descriptive
way the phenomenon; to verify which factors are the conditioning and which are the
preventing ones; to make a quantitative analysis of data using the computer program
GOLDVARB 3.0 (SANKOFF, TAGLIAMONTE e SMITH, 2005), checking the occurrence
of palato-alveolar realizations in contrast with the production of the alveolar /S/; to compare
the results with others from previous researches; and based on the preliminary conclusions, to
raise other hypotheses to be developed in future academic investigations or even in an
extention of the present study.
fenômenos lingüísticos ocorrentes no Português Brasileiro.
(SCHERRE & MACEDO, 2000); Cordeiro-RJ (GRYNER & MACEDO, 2000);

Previous issue date: 2009-11-06 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / This work is part of the sound acquisition area in second language (L2), specifically in
English, and it aimed to investigate whether there was a relationship between production and
perception of the voiceless interdental fricative pronunciation [θ] or not in a group of
Brazilian native speakers (BNS), based on acoustic and phonetic analysis. It was stated that
there is such a relationship on account of the BNS in the sample. According to the literature,
Brazilian learners of English tend to produce the voiceless interdental fricative [θ] as [s], [f]
and [t] ((LIEFF & NUNES, 1993). This is because they consider such sound to be similar to
[s], [f] and [t], and as stated by Flege (1999) and Meador, Flege and MacKay (2000), similar
sounds of L1 (native language, in this case, Brazilian Portuguese - BP) and L2 may cause
difficulties for the learner. Three studies have been made: an analysis of the production of the
3 BNS as well as of the AMS (American Native speaker) concerning the sound [θ]; an
analysis of the perception of the sound [θ] by the 3 BNS and, finally, an evaluation of the 3
BNS productions of the sound [θ] by 31 American Native judges. The results of the three
analyses have been crossed, and it can be posed that they conform to the literature about the
link between production and perception and the assimilation of sounds from L2 to L1.
Moreover, with such results, it was possible to achieve the goal of this work. It was verified
that, regarding the perception analysis, the three BNS tend to perceive the sound [θ] as [θ] or
[t]. Regarding the production analysis, one of the BNS approached the ANS. Therefore, it can
be stated that there is a relationship between this BNS perception and production. The two
remaining BNS did not approach the ANS. Most of the time, those speakers perceived the
sound [θ] as [t], and the same happened with their productions of the sound [θ]. Taking into
account those figures, it can be stated that there is a relationship among their production and
perception, even if they have not perceived the sound [θ] as it should have been done. The
perception and production analyses results were compared with the evaluation of the 31
judges, and the same can be said concerning all BNS: one of the BNS approached the ANS
concerning the sound [θ], and the two remaining ones did not approach the ANS. To sum up,
it was observed that, in this particular sample, there is a relationship between their
production and perception, and that two out of the three BNS assimilated the sound [θ] as [t] / Este trabalho situa-se na área de aquisição de sons de L2 (segunda língua), mais
L1, atingiram o objetivo e validaram a hipótese defendida.
