Språket och skolämnet svenska som andraspråk : Om elevers språk och skolans språksyn / Swedish as a second language in school : On language use and conceptions of language

Since the school subject Swedish as a second language was established in the Swedish school system in the mid-1990s, the organization of the subject has varied widely across schools, and the outcomes have been poor. This thesis investigates these problems linguistically. The main objective is to explore the school subject Swedish as a second language in relation to the language of students taking the subject. Another aim of this thesis is to illuminate the complex relation between the Swedish language and the use and conception of Swedish as a second language. A critique of the concept of ‘language’ and of language attitudes in the school context is a recurring theme in the thesis. The thesis contains four papers addressing different aspects of the school subject Swedish as a second language. Paper I examines texts and oral presentations from a group of students born in Sweden, analyzing their language from a normative, mainly grammatical, perspective. Paper II develops a model for analyzing text as activity. In Paper III, the model from paper II is applied to analyze students’ narrative texts written as responses to an assignment, focusing on texts that received failing grades. Papers I and III include comparisons with Swedish as a language and as a school subject. Paper IV, finally, analyzes views of language in policy documents. One critical result of the thesis is the identification of a need for a raised awareness about language in schools and society. In the current situation it is hard to establish a discrete boundary dividing the language of students in the subject Swedish as a second language from the language of students in the subject Swedish, but differences can be observed, which in some sense resonates well with the definition of the subject given by the policy documents. Swedish as a second language in schools can be vaguely defined as Swedish with non-Swedish or foreign markers. The vague definition of the subject and the many linguistic conditions built into the subject entail that Swedish as a second language does not seem well-suited for anyone. Employing a combination of a traditional and an alternative view of language, as proposed in this thesis, may be a fruitful way to accommodate all students.

[pt] Neste trabalho analisamos sob que perspectivas o presente do indicativo é apresentado nas gramáticas normativas. Em função do resultado dessa análise, levantamos algumas propostas para vermos amenizados os conflitos entre forma e significado, a partir de uma abordagem funcional. Baseados em breve reflexão sobre o conceito tempo, observamos as nuances semânticas do presente do indicativo encontradas no discurso oral e buscamos uma sistematização dessas ocorrências. / [en] In this essay we analyze in which perspectives the present tense is presented in standard grammars. As a result of this analysis, some proposals were raised to minimize the conflicts between form and meaning, rooted in a systemic functional approach. Based on a brief reflection about the concept of time, we observed the semantic nuances of the present tense found in oral discourse and we searched for a systematization of these occurrences.

This topic was chosen due to its topicality and relevance to the Brazilian political and social landscape. The choice of the opinion essay genre was due to the need for Brazilian students to produce particularly argumentative texts in diagnostic tests. The data used were collected in two copies of the opinion essay genre, published by the n w F Sã P . T S F G (SFG) calls for the simultaneous construction, by language, of three meanings or metafunctions: Ideational (informing); Interpersonal (allowing interaction) and Textual (linguistically organizing the text). SFG allows investigation of the relationships between choices of certain linguistic forms and the ideologies and power relations that underlie these forms. This research has critical characteristics, in the terms of Critical Linguistics, in the attempt to marry a methodology of textual linguistic analysis with a social theory of language about political and ideological processes, resorting to SFG. Furthermore, the essays analysis is aided by the following concepts: the argumentative genre and the textual modes that constitute it, Argumentation Theory, as well as persuasive resources: politeness, irony and voicing. The research should answer the following questions: (a) how are the essays structured regarding persuasion? (b) to what lexicogrammatical choices do the authors resort to express the persuasion that permeates their opinions about the same fact? Results show that w z B z w : C shows that the situation in Brazil is so serious that the people may rise up, with tragic consequences; Coelho, from beliefs reported on the media, also shows that Brazil is undergoing a time of precariousness in virtually all sectors of society / O objetivo de minha pesquisa é o exame do modo como a avaliação, em especial a do tipo implícito, contribui para persuadir o leitor em artigos de opinião, no caso, referentes às manifestações de protesto popular ocorridas no Brasil em junho de 2013. Este tema foi escolhido devido a sua atualidade e relevância no cenário político-social brasileiro. A escolha do gênero artigo de opinião deveu-se à necessidade dos alunos brasileiros produzirem textos marcadamente argumentativos em provas diagnósticas. Os dados que utilizo foram coletados em dois exemplares do gênero artigo de opinião, publicados na Folha de São Paulo . A pesquisa tem o apoio da Gramática Sistêmico-Funcional (GSF), que preconiza a construção simultânea pela língua de três significados, ou metafunções: Ideacional (informando), Interpessoal (permitindo a interação) e Textual (organizando linguisticamente o texto). A GSF permite a investigação das relações entre escolhas de certas formas linguísticas e as ideologias e relações de poder que subjazem a essas formas. A presente pesquisa investe-se de cunho crítico, nos termos da Linguística Crítica, uma tentativa de casar um método de análise linguístico-textual com uma teoria social da linguagem sobre processos políticos e ideológicos, recorrendo-se à GSF. Além disso, a análise dos artigos conta com o auxílio das seguintes noções: gênero argumentativo e os modos textuais que o constituem, Teoria da Argumentação, bem como de recursos persuasivos: polidez, ironia e vozeamento. A pesquisa deve responder às seguintes perguntas: (a) como são estruturados os artigos com vistas à persuasão? (b) a que escolhas léxico-gramaticais recorrem os autores para a expressão da persuasão que permeia as suas opiniões sobre um mesmo fato? Os resultados mostram que os dois articulistas aqui estudados criticam a situação do Brasil, diferindo na maneira como o fazem: Cony mostra que a situação no Brasil está tão grave que o povo pode sublevar-se, com trágicas consequências; e Coelho, a partir de crenças noticiadas na mídia, mostra também que o Brasil atravessa um momento de precariedade em praticamente todos os setores da sociedade

A crítica ao poder em textos líricos dos séculos XIII, XVII e XX: um enfoque sistêmico-funcional

Therefore, the present research aims to conduct a multifunctional study in the theoretical-methodological perspective of the Systemic- Functional Grammar (SFG) of literary productions from three distinct eras, but similar in the relationship of the authors with the existing power and target of their criticisms, namely: (a) satirical chants of Gil Pérez Conde (thirteenth century); (b) poems of Gregorio de Matos Guerra (seventeenth century); and (c) songs of Chico Buarque de Holanda (twentieth century). The analysis of these productions is based on the SFG proposals. It considers the clause as a social event, for which the structure serves to woven together three concurrent types of meanings, or metafunctions: Ideational (refers to information), Interpersonal (refers to the interaction between the producer and the receiver involved in the linguistic process) and Textual (refers to the text construction according to the requirements of the socio-historical-cultural environment). The SFG involves not only the Critical Linguistics, which is an approach that tries to match a textual linguistic analysis method with a social language theory in political and ideological processes, but also the Modality and Appraisal a theoretical extension of the Interpersonal metafunction that blends the author`s positioning with the message content. In this confrontation against the authorities, Appraisal works alongside of the care authors show redressing of affronts to face posed by face-threatening, or politeness. The research aims to answer the following questions: (a) How is power criticism made in the chosen different times? (b) What lexicogrammatical choices were made to criticize in terms of the Ideational and Interpersonal metafunctions? (c) What did rhetorical elements build the persuasion in this process? The results show that the dialogism of the texts points out to the use of similar persuasive structures that identify a satirical genre subcategory, which aggregates texts due to the repression context wrapping them. On the other hand, differences in the persuasive strategies, identified through the analysis, present the uniqueness of the texts and their authors / O objetivo desta pesquisa, de cunho crítico, é a identificação das estratégias persuasivas feitas por autores de diferentes épocas com vistas à crítica de detentores de poder em seus respectivos contextos. Para tanto, a presente pesquisa visa a realizar um estudo multifuncional, sob a ótica teórico metodológica da Gramática Sistêmico-Funcional (GSF), de produções literárias de três épocas distintas, mas semelhantes na relação de seus autores com o poder vigente e alvo de suas críticas, a saber: (a) cantigas de escárnio e de maldizer de Gil Pérez Conde (século XIII); (b) poemas de Gregório de Matos Guerra (século XVII); e (c) canções de Chico Buarque de Holanda (século XX). A análise dessas produções apoia-se nas propostas da GSF, para a qual a oração é um evento social, cuja estrutura serve para construir três tipos de significados, ou metafunções, simultâneos: Ideacional (refere-se à informação), Interpessoal (refere-se à interação entre produtor e receptor envolvidos no processo linguístico) e Textual (refere-se à construção do texto de acordo com as exigências do meio sócio histórico cultural). A GSF envolve não só a Linguística Crítica, uma abordagem que tenta casar um método de análise linguística textual com uma teoria social da linguagem em processos políticos e ideológicos, mas também a Modalidade e a Avaliatividade, uma ampliação teórica da metafunção Interpessoal, que envolve o posicionamento do autor sobre o conteúdo da mensagem. Paralelamente à Avaliatividade, nesse confronto com as autoridades, verifica-se o cuidado dos autores em observar as necessidades decorrentes do trabalho de face, ou polidez. A pesquisa visa a responder às seguintes perguntas: (a) Como é feita a crítica ao poder nas diferentes épocas selecionadas? (b) Que escolhas lexicogramaticais em termos das metafunções Ideacional e Interpessoal foram feitas para a realização dessa crítica? (c) Que elementos retóricos realizaram a persuasão nesse processo? Os resultados mostram que o dialogismo dos textos, no uso de estruturas persuasivas similares, os agregam numa subcategoria do gênero satírico, conforme o contexto de repressão que os abrange. With this in mind, it analyzes the arguments presented to make this persuasion effective. Methodologically, the survey is based on the SFG, especially on the Appraisal system, as well as on the extensions that arose from this proposal, which will be explained herein. The ways used to persuade make use of complex procedures that take advantage of the richness of human behaviors. The act of persuading is, in general terms, an alternative to the use of physical violence, according to Breton (2003), despite a different way of physical violence exercised by coercive means. Ways to convince can also, in this perspective, be discreetly used in a way that the other person does not even notice he/she is being the object of a request. And how can one implicitly persuade the other without using words usually considered evaluative? The Systemic Functional Grammar proposes a reticular system of descriptions of semantic options to evaluate people, things and phenomena known as Appraisal that involves the notion of tokens of attitude to define the way through which the experiential meaning can be saturated in evaluative terms, that is, in interpersonal terms. This work must answer the following questions: (a) how is persuasion used in the text in favor of transgenic food and how is it used in the text against transgenic food? (b) In which situations does the explicity or the implicity of such persuasion predominate? (c) Which additional resources are used to contribute to the persuasive process? / Esta pesquisa compara, sob o ponto de vista crítico, os modos como é feita a persuasão em dois textos: um pró- e outro anti-alimentos transgênicos. Para tanto, examina a validade dos argumentos apresentados na efetivação da persuasão, com o apoio teórico-metodológico da Gramática Sistêmico-Funcional (GSF). Os meios utilizados para persuadir colocam em ação procedimentos complexos, utilizando a riqueza dos comportamentos humanos, em que o ato de persuadir apresenta-se, de uma maneira geral, como uma alternativa ao uso da violência física, diz Breton (2003), embora uma forma diferente da violência física, efetivado por meios coercitivos. Os meios de convencer podem também, nessa perspectiva, ser acionados de maneira discreta e até sem que o outro saiba que está sendo objeto de uma solicitação. E como se fará a persuasão de maneira implícita, sem o uso de termos normalmente considerados avaliativos? No bojo da GSF, há a proposta de um sistema reticular de descrições de opções semânticas para avaliar pessoas, coisas e fenômenos, conhecida como Appraisal, (traduzido por Avaliatividade), que envolve a noção de token de atitude para denominar o modo pelo qual o significado experiencial pode ser saturado em termos avaliativos, ou seja, interpessoais. A pesquisa deve responder às seguintes perguntas: (a) como é feita a persuasão no texto pró-alimento transgênico e no texto anti-alimento transgênico? (b) Em que situações predominam a explicitude ou a implicitude dessa persuasão? (c) que outros recursos contribuem no processo persuasivo?

A masculinidade na capa da revista Men s Health: uma abordagem da linguística crítica sob o enfoque sistêmico-funcional

Several studies indicate the existence of a hegemonic masculinity, exalted in family and school, which is reflected, for example, in sports, representing a manhood test for the boys. With reference to the image of sensitive man currently depicted in the media, it does not reveal the abolition of patriarchy, but it is actually a modern form of this trend. In all these issues is the matter of male identity which operates on several levels simultaneously in the intersection between the literal, figurative and functional. To understand this issue, I adopt a method for the analysis of identity, considering that it emerges in the linguistic interaction and joins elements of sociocultural linguistics in a coherent model able to describe the current state of research and offers new directions for the area. A useful method of discourse analysis would fulfill some minimal requirements: be endowed with multidimensional characteristics; involve multifunctional analysis and be critical. Critical implies showing connections and hidden causes because the relations between the discursive, social and cultural changes are not always transparent. Based on the notion of Appraisal it is possible to show implicit evaluations both in image and in the verbal discourse. The analysis is supported by the Systemic Functional Grammar, involving notions such as Appraisal and Modality. I also use the multimodal grammar, which provides a consistent theoretical frame for examining the images on the covers of the magazines and their relations with the linguistic paradigms. The research aims to answer the following questions: (a) What masculine image Men's Health magazine seeks to portray on its covers in search of identification with the Brazilian men through a comparison with the American covers of the same magazine? (b) What implicit and explicit ideological aspects can be detected in the discourse? The results show that through the discourse of healthy living and body worship there are lexical, syntactic and image choices that signal to the maintenance of traditional ideologies related to gender / O objetivo desta pesquisa é examinar, sob o enfoque da Linguística Crítica, o conceito de masculinidade estampada nas capas da revista Men's Health. Vários estudos apontam a existência de uma masculinidade hegemônica, exaltada na família e na escola, que se reflete, por exemplo, na prática de esportes, representando um teste à masculinidade dos garotos. Com referência à masculinidade hegemônica, a imagem de homem sensível que se vê atualmente na mídia não revela a abolição do patriarquismo, mas é, na realidade, uma forma moderna dessa tendência. Afigura-se, aqui, a questão da identidade masculina, que opera simultaneamente em vários níveis, na intersecção entre o literal, o figurativo e o funcional. Para entender essa questão, adoto um método para a análise da identidade, como sendo constituída na interação linguística, e que junta elementos da linguística sociocultural em um modelo coerente que descreve o estado corrente da pesquisa e oferece novas direções para a área. Um método de análise do discurso útil deve preencher algumas condições mínimas: ser dotado de característica multidimensional; envolver um método de análise multifuncional; e ser crítico. Crítico implica mostrar conexões e causas ocultas, pois as relações entre as mudanças discursiva, social e cultural nem sempre são transparentes. Com base na noção de Appraisal/Avaliatividade, é possível mostrar relações avaliativas implícitas presentes tanto na imagem quanto no discurso verbal de maneira conjunta. A análise conta com o apoio da Gramática Sistêmico-Funcional, envolvendo noções como as de Avaliatividade e de Modalidade. Recorro também à gramática multimodal, que fornece um enquadre teoricamente consistente para o exame das imagens das capas das revistas e sua relação com os paradigmas linguísticos. A pesquisa visa a responder às seguintes perguntas: (a) Que imagem masculina o discurso verbal e imagético da revista Men's Health tenta retratar em suas capas na busca de identificação com o homem brasileiro a partir de uma comparação com as capas da revista americana? (b) Que aspectos ideológicos implícitos e explícitos podem ser detectados nesse discurso? Os resultados apontam que através do discurso de vida saudável e do culto ao corpo ainda existem escolhas lexicais, sintáticas e imagéticas que sinalizam para a manutenção de ideologias tradicionais relacionadas ao gênero

This research compares spoken English (dialogues taken from two interviews on CBS s program Late Night Show with David Letterman) and its translation into Portuguese, on the corresponding subtitles. I take into consideration the fact that subtitles must follow rules that include their length, and, thus, their linguistic content may not always be identical to the original, and is in general shorter. What matters to my research is, then, to determine the characteristics of the omitted material. Of the three meanings construed by thee language Ideational, Interpersonal and Textual I analyse the second, taking into account that a clause organizes information as an interactive event (Interpersonal function). In this context, I focus on the linguistic expectations, specially politeness. Linguistic Expectation involves, among other factors, the appropriate level of formality to the linguistic context of situation and culture that must be respected, otherwise risking failure in communication. The examination of interactions is going to focus primarily on: Modality (involving Modalization and Modulation) and Appraisal (involving explicit or implicit evaluation of the message or the interlocutors). The research should answer the following questions: (a) What is the difference between English and Portuguese speakers concerning specially politeness? (b) What roles do Modality and Appraisal have in the process? The analysis relies on the theoretical and methodological approach of the Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG). Research shows that there are differences both in lexicogrammatical choices that carry out politeness and in the frequency of their use / As escolhas lexicogramaticais que caracterizam uma interação oral autêntica em inglês ainda não mereceram a atenção devida. Esta pesquisa compara a modalidade falada do inglês, no caso, as interlocuções ocorridas em duas entrevistas do programa Late Night Show with David Letterman, no canal CBS, com as traduções em português, feitas nas respectivas legendas. Levo em conta que as legendas devem seguir normas que incluem sua extensão e que, dessa forma, seu conteúdo linguístico nem sempre pode ser idêntico ao do original, sendo em geral menos extenso. Assim, o que interessa à minha pesquisa é determinar as características do material omitido. Dos três significados construídos pela língua ideacional, interpessoal e textual , analiso o segundo, considerando que uma oração organiza a informação como um evento interativo (função interpessoal). Nesse contexto, enfoco a expectativa linguística em relação em especial à polidez. A expectativa linguística envolve, entre outros fatores, o nível de formalidade linguística adequado ao contexto de situação e de cultura, que deve ser respeitado com risco de insucesso na comunicação. O exame das interações enfocará basicamente: a Modalidade (envolvendo a Modalização e a Modulação) e a Avaliatividade (envolvendo a avaliação explícita ou implícita da mensagem ou dos interlocutores). A pesquisa deve responder às seguintes perguntas: (a) Que diferença existe entre as interlocuções de uma entrevista em inglês ocorridas em um programa de TV e as respectivas legendas em português em relação em especial à polidez? (b) Que papel exercem a Modalidade e a Avaliatividade nesse processo? A análise conta com o apoio da proposta teórico-metodológica da Gramática Sistêmico-Funcional (GSF). Captains of the Sands is a realist narrative that deals with the adventures of a group of street children who survives by committing crimes in the streets of Salvador. Since they live in an old warehouse, the boys of the band, led by Pedro Bala, are known by the nickname "captains of the sands". Jorge Amado is known as an advocate for the causes of the poor, excluded by society. This work is a lyrical testimony and romance of protest, bringing social and psychological elements that reflect the entire socio-political instability of the 30s. When creating his stories, the author, a political activist, defends the ideological principles of the left, and, in a way, the narrator works as the author's delegate. Despite all the violence and the rogue behavior of the minors, a close reading reveals that the source of these problems is the neglect of the state itself, the repressive and violent police, and the reformatory, a true hell of torture and misery. Thus, the reactions of these adolescents are nothing more than a vehicle of harsh revenge against the violence they have suffered. The novel analysis is based on theoretical and methodological proposals of Critical Linguistics ― which gives ideological significance to any aspect of linguistic structure ― and of the Systemic Functional Grammar, whose approach to language as a construer of three distinct functions or metafunctions ― namely, Ideational (subject), Interpersonal (interactivity) and textual (internal organization and communicative nature of a text), allows the relationship between lexicogrammatical choices made in the microstructure of the text, with the macrostructure of ideology and power relations. The research should answer the following questions: (a) What choices in the Transitivity System contribute to enable the social criticism in Captains of the Sands? (b) What choices in the Appraisal framework perform this function? / The purpose of this master thesis is the examination of social criticism in the novel Captains of the Sands by Jorge Amado. When creating his stories, the author, a political activist, defends the ideological principles of the left, and, in a way, the narrator works as the author's delegate. Despite all the violence and the rogue behavior of the minors, a close reading reveals that the source of these problems is the neglect of the state itself, the repressive and violent police, and the reformatory, a true hell of torture and misery. Thus, the reactions of these adolescents are nothing more than a vehicle of harsh revenge against the violence they have suffered. The novel analysis is based on theoretical and methodological proposals of Critical Linguistics ― which gives ideological significance to any aspect of linguistic structure ― and of the Systemic Functional Grammar, whose approach to language as a construer of three distinct functions or metafunctions ― namely, Ideational (subject), Interpersonal (interactivity) and textual (internal organization and communicative nature of a text), allows the relationship between lexicogrammatical choices made in the microstructure of the text, with the macrostructure of ideology and power relations. The research should answer the following questions: (a) What choices in the Transitivity System contribute to enable the social criticism in Captains of the Sands? (b) What choices in the Appraisal framework perform this function?

The importance of language in a literary work building process is well recognized but, in practice, the language has received relatively little treatment in an area that plays an essential role. As Minas de Prata, work published in mid-nineteenth century, in the context of the political independence of Brazil, as part of a cultural and political project, reveals its author's efforts to build a hero that represents optimal values for Brazilian developing community. The idealization concerns the use of certain culturally contextualized linguistic choices showing some facts while hiding others in order to guide the reader s construction of meaning. It will be linguistically examined in terms of Appraisal, a system that deals with the writer's position in relation to the message and to the caller considering: Affection, Ethical Judgment of People and Assessment Aesthetic of Objects, proposed by Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG). This theory allows the relationship between linguistic microstructure of Alencar s text and the macro-structure of the speech, in which idealization appears, and is supported by the three simultaneous meanings constructed by language: information, interaction, and text construction. The SFG includes the Critical Linguistics for which any aspect of linguistic structure carries ideological significance. The study answers the following questions: (a) how does the idealization of the hero in As Minas de Prata is carried out? (b) What lexicogrammatical choices are made in terms of Ideational and Interpersonal Metafunctions to express this idealization? É reconhecida a importância da língua no processo de construção da obra literária, mas, na prática, a língua tem recebido um tratamento relativamente pequeno, justamente em uma área em que tem papel essencial. As Minas de Prata, obra publicada em meados do século XIX, no contexto da independência política do Brasil, como parte de um projeto cultural e político, revela esforços do seu autor para construir um herói que represente valores ideais para a comunidade brasileira nascente. A idealização diz respeito ao uso de certas escolhas linguísticas culturalmente contextualizadas, mostrando certos fatos ao mesmo tempo em que se ocultam outros, como forma de orientar a construção de sentido por parte dos leitores; será examinada linguisticamente em termos da Avaliatividade, um sistema que trata do posicionamento do escritor em relação à mensagem e ao interlocutor, em termos de: Afeto, Julgamento ético de pessoas e Apreciação estética de objetos, proposto pela Gramática Sistêmico- Funcional (GSF). Essa teoria permite fazer a relação entre a microestrutura linguística do texto alencariano com a macroestrutura do discurso, em que se encontra a idealização, e assim o faz apoiando-se nos três significados simultâneos construídos pela linguagem: a informação, a interação e a construção do texto. A GSF inclui em seu bojo a Linguística Crítica, para a qual, qualquer aspecto da estrutura linguística carrega significação ideológica. A pesquisa responde às seguintes perguntas: (a) Como se realiza a idealização do herói em As Minas de Prata? (b) Que escolhas léxicogramaticais são feitas, em termos das Metafunções Ideacional e Interpessoal para expressar essa idealização? A interpessoalidade em blogs sob a perspecita sistêmico-funcional

Since the advent of the Internet, several genres have started to circulate in the virtual world and it has become necessary to understand their characteristics. The corpus of this study is composed of seven blogs, all of them written in Portuguese. Of these blogs, 251 posts and 5,521 comments posted in the months of January, February and March of 2005, totaling 215,926 words, were analyzed. The Systemic Functional Grammar of Halliday (1985, 1994) and followers (Eggins, 1994, Thompson, 1996, among others) was used to analyze the interpersonal metafunction, so as to characterize the interaction between bloggers and the users that access their blogs, aiming at a better understanding of how this communicational exchange occurs in the virtual universe. The corpus, classified as smallmedium (from 80 to 250 thousand words), according to Corpus Linguistics (Berber Sardinha, 2004), was submitted to the software WordSmith Tools (Scott, 1998) and to the tools it offers, such as Concord and WordList, used to analyze the six items that characterize, due to the frequency with which they are employed, the texts of this virtual interaction between the participants in the digital context: (1) forms of address, (2) pronouns, (3) names/nicknames, (4) emoticons, (5) items that show affection/kindness and (6) abbreviations. Results show that the interaction between bloggers and users is established when the author posts his/her text on-line and a reader accesses it, commenting on its subject. The role assumed by the blogger, therefore, is that of informant, either to give information about his/her own life, or about any other fact or event reported in his/her blog. The user assumes the role of reader/producer, for at the same time that s/he reads the text, s/he can participate in its production. The Internet blogs that compose the corpus of this research are, therefore, texts constructed jointly by bloggers and users / O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar os elementos interpessoais presentes em blogs, bem como caracterizar a maneira como ocorre a interação entre blogueiros e usuários, uma vez que, com o advento da Internet, diversos gêneros passaram a circular no mundo virtual e torna-se necessário compreender como estes se caracterizam. O corpus de estudo compõe-se de sete blogs, todos escritos em língua portuguesa, nos quais foram analisados 251 relatos (posts) e 5.521 comentários (comments) veiculados nos meses de janeiro, fevereiro e março de 2005, totalizando 215.926 palavras. Utilizou-se a Gramática Sistêmico-Funcional de Halliday (1985, 1994) e demais seguidores (Eggins, 1994, Thompson, 1996, dentre outros) para a análise da metafunção interpessoal, de forma a caracterizar a interação entre blogueiro e os usuários que acessam seu blog, para uma maior compreensão de como ocorre essa troca comunicacional no universo virtual. O corpus de estudo, classificado como pequeno-médio (de 80 a 250 mil palavras), segundo a Lingüística de Corpus (Berber Sardinha, 2004), foi submetido ao programa computacional WordSmith Tools (Scott, 1998), e às ferramentas nele disponíveis tais como Concordanciador (Concord) e Lista de Palavras (WordList) utilizadas para analisar os seis itens que caracterizam, pela freqüência com que são empregados, os textos dessa interação virtual entre os participantes no contexto digital, quais sejam: (1) formas de tratamento, (2) pronomes, (3) nomes/nicknames, (4) emoticons, (5) itens de demonstração de afeto/carinho e (6) abreviações. Com base em tais análises, os resultados apontam que a interação entre blogueiros e usuários fica estabelecida a partir do momento em que o autor deixa seu post on-line e um leitor o acessa, comentando sobre o assunto do post. O papel assumido pelo blogueiro, portanto, é o de informante, seja para dar informações sobre sua própria vida, ou qualquer outro fato ou acontecimento relatado em seu blog. O usuário assume o papel de leitor/produtor, pois ao mesmo tempo em que lê o texto pode participar de sua produção. Os blogs veiculados na Internet que compõem o corpus desta pesquisa são, portanto, textos construídos conjuntamente pelos blogueiros e pelos usuários
