Språket och skolämnet svenska som andraspråk : Om elevers språk och skolans språksyn / Swedish as a second language in school : On language use and conceptions of language

Sahlée, Anna January 2017 (has links)
Since the school subject Swedish as a second language was established in the Swedish school system in the mid-1990s, the organization of the subject has varied widely across schools, and the outcomes have been poor. This thesis investigates these problems linguistically. The main objective is to explore the school subject Swedish as a second language in relation to the language of students taking the subject. Another aim of this thesis is to illuminate the complex relation between the Swedish language and the use and conception of Swedish as a second language. A critique of the concept of ‘language’ and of language attitudes in the school context is a recurring theme in the thesis. The thesis contains four papers addressing different aspects of the school subject Swedish as a second language. Paper I examines texts and oral presentations from a group of students born in Sweden, analyzing their language from a normative, mainly grammatical, perspective. Paper II develops a model for analyzing text as activity. In Paper III, the model from paper II is applied to analyze students’ narrative texts written as responses to an assignment, focusing on texts that received failing grades. Papers I and III include comparisons with Swedish as a language and as a school subject. Paper IV, finally, analyzes views of language in policy documents. One critical result of the thesis is the identification of a need for a raised awareness about language in schools and society. In the current situation it is hard to establish a discrete boundary dividing the language of students in the subject Swedish as a second language from the language of students in the subject Swedish, but differences can be observed, which in some sense resonates well with the definition of the subject given by the policy documents. Swedish as a second language in schools can be vaguely defined as Swedish with non-Swedish or foreign markers. The vague definition of the subject and the many linguistic conditions built into the subject entail that Swedish as a second language does not seem well-suited for anyone. Employing a combination of a traditional and an alternative view of language, as proposed in this thesis, may be a fruitful way to accommodate all students.

Der grammatische Tigersprung : Studien zu Heimito von Doderers Sprachterminologie / The tiger salient : a study of Heimito von Doderer's language terminology

Lidén, Ulla January 1990 (has links)
The Austrian novelist Heimito von Doderer (1896-1966) gained his reputation after World War II with the novels Die Strudlhofstiege (1951) and Die Dämonen (1956). His interest in language, its functions and its innermost essence appears from his novels, his diaries and his essays. In order to express his energetic conception of language he used an individual and partly newly-created terminology. This dissertation deals in the main with an analysis of approximately 25 central sentences {Fundamentalsätze), containing more than 100 terms, according to the criteria of content and formal aspects. Chapter 5 focuses on Doderer's view of life (Lebensphilosophie), a combination of philosophy, psychology and religion. The role of memory, the exploration of thinking and the depiction of creativity constitute combined endeavours in his work, in which he was influenced by Weininger's and Swoboda's terms and theses. Chapter 6 treats linguistic terminology proper. Two different examples may demonstrate Doderer's remarkable intuition for linguistic essentials. Beginning with the indirect essence of language he supposes that there is no fundamental difference between the birth of language and the creation of metaphors. Secondly he conceives of a sentence as being formed as a structural unit, based on a formula (Strukturformel). Similar opinions are represented in modern linguistics. The formal aspects of his terminology are dealt with in Chapter 7, including the different types of terms and the possibilities of word-formation, to express definitions and thematic connections. In the novel Die Merowinger (1962) Doderer constructs a burlesque travesty of erudite professional language. / digitalisering@umu

A base teórica que sustenta, principalmente, esta pesquisa é a teoria da enunciação de Mikhail Bakhtin e postulados de Halliday, McIntosh e Strevens (1974) acerca do ensino prescritivo e produtivo da língua / The present research aims at investigating how has been the teaching of Portuguese Language at state public schools of Rio de Janeiro, in the 21st century, through the curricular orientations prescribed by the Secretaria Estadual de Educação, in order to investigate whether this is a prescriptive or productive teaching. To do so, it is taken as the object of analysis the proposed curriculum for the teaching of Portuguese, produced in the document of Curricular Reorientation given to schools in 2006, and the current document known as Minimum Curriculum. In this investigation, is the object of the discourse analysis of official document regarding the design of prioritized language and purpose of language teaching materialized through what it presents as the object of teaching of Portuguese Language classes. Interest in the subject is based on the concern that, in working with the language does not consider the genres, we incur the risk of focusing on the language just as form and structure, revealing another conception of language that departs from that advocated by this document curriculum that guides education in the State of Paraná. From this perspective, our purpose was to answer the following research questions: a) What is the understanding of the Professor of Portuguese Language (LP) in the state schools of Cascavel, in relation to the theoretical and methodological assumptions of State Curriculum Guidelines, at work with genres in the classroom? b) How does this understanding is transpiring in the teaching of discipline referrals? c) Continuous training supplied by the State after the publication of the State Curriculum Guidelines has favored the understanding of theoretical and methodological assumptions of this document? As a general objective we propose to check on going work with the genres in groups of 6 to 9 years of elementary school in Cascavel State public network, from what is proposed in the State Curriculum Guidelines and the training, after the implementation of the document, contributing in some way for that to happen. In order that the goal was met, it was necessary to elect a theoretical framework that were in accord with what is proposed by the DCE, to explore concepts such as dialogical conception of language, speech, discursive genres, utterance and text, which are presented by Bakhtin / Volochínov (2009 [1929]) and Bakhtin (2003 [1979]; 2010 [1929]; 2010 [1975]). Resorted also to other authors who share this theory: Brait (2003, 2005, 2012); Rodrigues (2005); Faraco (2009, 2011); Acosta-Pereira (2013); Costa Hübes (2014); among others. It is, therefore, a search that is included in the Applied Linguistics, given that he turned to the study of language in the educational field. As for the methodological perspective, this research enroll in a qualitative-interpretative approach, ethnographic, case study. The subjects were 4 teachers working in the final years of elementary school in two state schools in Cascavel, and the data was generated through interviews and classroom observation. As a result, we found that teachers facing as research subjects, even though not fully understanding the theoretical and methodological basis of the document and not getting enough subsidies through FC offered by the state, teach your classes around the content discursive genre with autonomy, exploiting it in accordance with their knowledge on the subject / O tema desta pesquisa é o trabalho com os gêneros discursivos em turmas de 6º a 9º anos do Ensino Fundamental, em escolas públicas da Rede Estadual, a partir do que está proposto nas Diretrizes Curriculares Estaduais DCE (PARANÁ, 2008).

Brunner, Svetlana 04 March 2024 (has links)
