Migrants in Shanghai: An Analysis of Verbal Pejoration in Weibo

Song, Depei 06 September 2018 (has links)
This thesis examines 硬盘Yingpan ‘hard drive,’ a newly created online derogatory code word referring to the migrants in Shanghai against the historical background of discrimination of migrants in Shanghai. Based on corpus data from Chinese social media, I examine the usage patterns of this derogatory word. The results show four salient speech acts in which this word is used. These are 1) complaints about migrants, 2) abusive commands, 3) self-victimization of the locals, and 4) lamentation over the loss of Shanghai identity. These usage patterns reflect the impacts of societal changes as a result of mass migration in contemporary China. This study has implications for research of migration and the consequential societal tensions in societies across the globe.

INTERNET NEOLOGISMS IN THE GLOBAL WEB-BASED ENGLISH CORPUS

Tugiyanto, . 01 August 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the occurrence of five Internet-based neologisms in the Global Web-based English corpus (GloWbE) (Davies, 2013), which includes data from six Inner Circle countries, where English is spoken as a native language, and 14 Outer Circle countries, where English has historically acquired an official status alongside the local languages (Kachru, 1985). Three of the target words (download, upload, and tweet) can function as verbs and nouns, whereas the other two (hashtag and app/s) only occur as nouns in the GloWbE corpus. Each word was examined in terms of its frequency of occurrence in the entire corpus and in each of the 20 countries. Then, the frequencies for the Inner and Outer Circle countries were collapsed and compared. For the first three words, which can be both verbs and nouns, separate searches were conducted in order to generate frequency statistics for the occurrence of the verbs and the nouns. Finally, the most frequent noun collocates for the verbs and the most frequent adjective collocates for the nouns were generated and analyzed. The data analysis revealed that in terms of overall frequency, the most frequently used was download, followed by tweet and upload, the latter showing the lowest frequency of the three. In addition, the statistics per million words showed higher frequencies for download and upload in the Outer Circle countries, whereas for tweet, higher frequencies per million words were observed in the Inner Circle countries. The most common noun collocates for the verb download included music, apps, and files, whereas upload and tweet most commonly occurred with photos and pictures. On the other hand, hashtag and app/s occurred only as nouns in the GloWbE corpus. Of the two, app/s showed a much higher frequency than hashtag, and in fact had the highest frequency statistics of the five words. The statistics per million words for the Inner and Outer Circles showed a consistent pattern, where the occurrence of both nouns per million words was at a higher rate in the Inner Circle than in the Outer Circle. The most common adjective collocates for app/s referred to different types, such as mobile apps, native apps, and third-party apps, whereas the adjectives modifying hashtag revealed a preference for new, popular, trending, and relevant hashtags. Overall, this study has revealed how five Internet-based neologisms occur in World Englishes in terms of frequencies, functions, and common collocates, which in turn suggested similarities and differences at the cultural and social level. It also invites further investigation of the GloWbE corpus, which as described by Davies and Fuchs (2015), offers numerous opportunities for comparisons among the different varieties of World English in terms of lexical, morphological, syntactic, and discourse variations.

Um estudo da prefixação em unidades lexicais neológicas coletadas de blogs da internet / A study of prefixation process in neological lexical unities collected in internet blogs

Ganança, João Henrique Lara 05 April 2017 (has links)
This research aims to study some morphological, lexical and semantic aspects of the prefixes, considered or not by the lexicographic and grammar traditions, used to create neologisms in the contemporary Brazilian Portuguese. We selected 89 blogs as the extraction corpus of our study. These blogs were published, during 2014, by three important Brazilian journalistic websites: UOL, Folha de S. Paulo and Veja magazine. In order to recognize the lexical unities as neologisms or not we first submitted the texts to Extrator de Neologismos, a software used within TermNeo project (FFLCH-USP), and then we verified the existence of the words selected by the software in three different dictionaries: HOUAISS (electronic version), AURÉLIO (electronic version) and MICHAELIS (online version). The diversity since always presented by the prefixes, which historically divided the studies into those that consider prefixation as derivational process and those that consider it as composicional process, made us to look for an analytical point of view that privileged exactly the idiosyncrasies of each prefix. So, guided by the prototype theory (ROSCH, 1973; 1975, apud CANÇADO, 2015; GEERAERTS, 2006, apud MARONEZE, 2011; GONÇALVES, 2012), we proposed the creation of a prefixity continuum, in which the real prefixes could be, after the comparison between them and the prototype prefix, identified as more or less prefixal.

Abstract: This research aimed at investigating frequent words used to report written news on football. Johansson, Thomas January 2010 (has links)
<p>This essay examines the novel <em>Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture</em> by Douglas Coupland in an attempt to show how it is heavily postmodernist. Postmodernism is explained briefly to give an understanding of how it might be applied to the analysis of the novel. Then the analysis is divided into five different categories: characterization, language and style, setting and society, storytelling and thematic focus. Postmodernist literary theory is applied to various parts of the novel and the postmodernist features are highlighted and discussed. The conclusion is that <em>Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture</em> is indeed a heavily postmodernist novel.</p>

Los términos de la crisis venezolana

Lovón Cueva, Marco Antonio, Pita Garcia, Paula Sharon 14 December 2016 (has links)
