This thesis is dealing with Villanovan and Etruscan fibulae, their typology, chronology and location within the tombs of necropolises of Veii. The aim of this thesis is to point to the occurance of fibulae in different time horizonts, to show their development and to compare the necropolises of Veii with other specific locations in Italy. The thesis focuses on evaluation of development and relations of the components of funerary equipments, localy and outside the area of Veii as well. Based on the data collected it is possible to point out the similarities of the necropolises of Veii and to compare them with more distant locations in Italy. Lampy z římských pohřebišť I a II v Gerulatě / Roman Lamps From Cemeteries in Gerulata (Rusoviec)

This catalogue documents Roman lamps from the cemeteries of Gerulata (modern-day Rusovce). It consists of 16 Bildlapmen, 89 Firmalampen, and one special shape. These lamps were found mainly in two large cemeteries, in both cremation and inhumation graves, dated from the last decades of the 1 st century AD to the dawn of the 3rd century. Of the Bildlampen, several lamps with angular voluted nozzles (Loeschcke type I) and one fragment of a circular lamp with a rounded nozzle (Loeschcke type VIII) are represented. Of the Firmalampen, both Loeschcke types IX and X are found, type X and its variations being the most numerous (67 lamps). The iconography of relief decorations shows a range of mythological and profane images. Twenty different makers' stamps in relief are found, two without parallels, with Fortis as most common. The production, transport and copying of Firmalampen is described; resulting endeavors to locate their point of origin are determined to be often unreliable without chemical analysis. Both the relationship of lamps to other grave goods as well as their purpose in graves are assessed; lamps are found to have been an available luxury, as appropriate in a Romanized society. Au travers d’une monographie des sites archéologiques d’Acoua, village de parler kibushi kimaore situé au nord-ouest de Grande Terre, cette recherche propose d’étudier la période des XIIe-XVIe siècles à Mayotte. Cette période est caractérisée par d’importants changements culturels, religieux et politiques conduisant à l’instauration progressive d’une société stratifiée et islamisée. Il sera notamment question, au travers des thématiques explorées par notre étude archéologique (pratiques funéraires, évolutions de la culture matérielle, intégration dans les réseaux marchands de l’océan Indien), de déterminer les filiations et processus culturels qui ont contribué à façonner la société ancienne de Mayotte, île dont le peuplement complexe, caractéristique des cultures dites « de franges », selon l’expression popularisée dans cette partie du monde par Paul Ottino, est située à la rencontre de grandes aires culturelles : monde africain bantou, monde malgache et monde arabo-persan, hissant cette île de l’archipel comorien au rang de véritable interface culturelle, commerciale et migratoire entre l’Afrique et Madagascar, « plaque tournante et microcosme de l’océan Indien » pour reprendre l’expression de Claude Allibert. / Through this monograph of Acoua’s archaeological sites - a Kibushi kimaore speaking village located in the northwest of Grande Terre - this research proposes to study the XIIth-XVIth centuries period, in Mayotte. This period is characterized by important cultural, religious and political changes leading to the gradual establishment of a stratified and Islamized society. It will be question here, through the themes explored by our archaeological study (funerary practices, evolutions of material culture, integration in the Indian Ocean trading networks), to determine the cultural affiliations and processes that have contributed to shaping Mayotte’s ancient society, an island whose complex settlement, characteristic of cultures known as "fringes" - according to the expression popularized in this part of the world by Ottino - is located at the meeting of meany great cultural areas: African Bantou world, Malagasy world and Arab-Persian world, hoisting this island of the Comorian archipelago to the rank of true cultural, commercial and migratory interface between Africa and Madagascar : a "hub and microcosm of the Indian Ocean", to use the expression of Claude Allibert.

A presente pesquisa de doutorado pretende levantar, catalogar e examinar os vestígios arqueológicos dos contextos funerários, datados entre o intervalo do século XI ao VIII a.C. nos principais sítios da região da Argólida (Mapas 1, 2 e 3), Argos, Tirinto, Asine, Micenas, Náuplia e Lerna. Comparando tais dados entre si, e discutindo-os a partir de fundamentos teórico-metodológicos da Arqueologia das Práticas Mortuárias, objetivamos, por fim, levantar considerações sobre os costumes funerários dessa área, revelando possíveis padrões de enterramento e de comportamento sócio-cultural inseridos nas mudanças políticas ocorridas em um período de longa duração, principalmente, durante o período denominado de Alto Arcaísmo, o século VIII a.C., com o processo de formação da pólis argiva. / This thesis intends to gather, catalogue and analyze the archaeological data from the funerary contexts, dated from the XI to the VIII centuries BC in the main sites of the Argive plain (Maps 1, 2 and 3). Finally, it is also our aim to compare the data collected and discuss them through the theoretical and methodological basis of the Archaeology of Mortuary Practices trying to reach some questions and considerations about the funerary customs and burial patterns of this region and also possible social and cultural behavior characteristic of the shifts occurred mainly during the VIII century BC.

Os contextos funerários na arqueologia da calha do rio Amazonas / Archaeological funerary contexts in the Amazon River

Esta tese de doutorado aborda os contextos funerários tradicionais na Amazônia. Mesmo tendo como pontos de partida e final a arqueologia, utilizamos dados da antropologia sociocultural e da etnologia como um todo, tanto para estruturar nossos conceitos teóricos quanto para analisar os dados. Os contextos funerários recentes podem ser uma chave para o passado, mas são principalmente evidência da complexidade do tema e da necessidade de se considerar os indivíduos e suas identidades na hora da morte. Através dos contextos analisados iremos dialogar com algumas hipóteses de ocupação vigentes na Arqueologia Amazônica: como a associação entre alguns tipos de cultura material e falantes dos principais troncos linguísticos da região (Arawak, Tupi, Karib e Jê). Foram trabalhados contextos arqueológicos da região do médio rio Solimões até o estado do Amapá. Os principais elementos analisados foram: os gestos, os contextos, os acompanhamentos, os mortos, a localização dos sepultamentos, etc. Ao final percebemos que ao mesmo tempo em que existem conceitos pan-amazônicos sobre o que seria uma \"boa morte\", existem também sociedades que buscam se diferenciar e possuem códigos próprios, individualizantes. / This dissertation addresses the traditional funerary contexts in the Amazon. Even though archaeology is the starting and ending points of our work, we used data from socio-cultural anthropology and ethnology as whole, to structure our theoretical concepts and to analyze the data. Recent funerary contexts may be a key to the past, but mostly they are evidence of the complexity of this topic and the need to consider individuals and their identities at death. Through the contexts that were analyzed, we will engage with some of the prevailing occupation hypothesis in the Amazon Archaeology, for instance: the association between some types of material culture and speakers of the main languages in this region (Arawak, Tupi, Karib and Jê). Archaeological contexts from the Middle Rio Solimões all the way to the state of Amapá were studied. The major elements taken into consideration were: the gestures, the contexts, the grave furniture, the dead, the location of the burials, etc. At the end we realized that while there are pan-Amazonian concepts of what should be a \"good death\", there are also societies that seek to differentiate themselves and have their own, individualized codes.

A presente pesquisa visa analisar aspectos da natureza das práticas rituais realizadas em determinadas estruturas absidais* de grande porte em sítios gregos da Idade do Ferro. Muitos autores afirmam que nessas estruturas as práticas rituais funerárias assumem as características de um verdadeiro culto heróico. Contudo, também observam que na grande maioria dos casos, é difícil estabelecer uma distinção clara entre as evidências que denotam funções sagradas e aquelas que denotam funções profanas. Para tentar entender melhor essas limitações de funções e também as próprias características dos aspectos religiosos da Idade do Ferro, selecionamos quatro sítios onde essas estruturas absidais são encontradas e datadas entre os séculos XI e VIII a.C.: o Mégaron A e o Mégaron B em Thermos, na Etólia, o Edifício Toumba em Lefkandi, na ilha da Eubéia, os Edifícios C, D e S em Asine, na região da Argólida e o Edifício A (ou Daphnephoreion) e o Templo D em Erétria, também localizada na ilha da Eubéia. Pretendemos realizar um estudo desses casos, relacionando o exame dos aspectos arquitetônicos com a análise da cultura material associada a essas estruturas. Comparando os dados entre si, objetivamos levantar algumas considerações sobre a natureza dessas práticas rituais, relacionando-as com a documentação textual e imagética disponível. Objetivamos por fim, indicar algumas questões a respeito da importância e das implicações dessas práticas rituais no contexto sócio-político, principalmente nos séculos IX e VIII a.C. / This research aims to analyze the aspects of ritual practices that took place in monumental apsidal structures* in Greek sites of Iron Age (1100 to 700BC). Many authors believe that these funerary practices are dressed up as a real hero cult. Though, they also observe that generally is really difficult to establish a clear distinction between the sacred and the profane functions fulfilled by these structures. We have chosen four sites where these structures can be found and dated to the 11th to 8th BC in order to understand better the interaction between the sacred and the profane activities, investigating the religious aspects of the Greek Iron Age: Megaron A and Megaron B in Thermos, the Toumba building in Lefkandi, Buildings C, D e S in Asine and Building A (or Daphnephoreion) and Temple D in Eretria. We intend to link the exam of architectural aspects to the archaeological material associated with the apsidal structures. Our purpose is to establish a comparative analysis between the archaeological data, the written and the image sources available for this period, providing considerations about the meaning, and the implications of the religious nature of these sites related to the rise of the polis

Cette thèse porte sur l'étude des mobiliers funéraires en Etrurie méridionale à la période hellénistique. Elle se proposait de faire le point sur l'ensemble des données livrées par les nombreuses nécropoles du territoire de Tarquinia, en accordant une attention particulière à l'Étrurie rupestre. En partant de l'étude ponctuelle des nécropoles du site étrusco-romain de Musarna, l'analyse détaillée des mobiliers funéraires, couplée à celle des structures funéraires, a représenté la première étape d'une réflexion à plus grande échelle sur les pratiques et les rituels funéraires attestés dans la région. Au travers de la composition des assemblages funéraires, on a tenté d'identifier des éléments pouvant permettre de mieux comprendre les coutumes funéraires et leur évolution entre la fin du IV" siècle av. J.-C. et le début du 1°' siècle av. J.-C., période chronologique caractérisée par le phénomène de conquête et de « romanisation » des territoires étrusques, jusqu'à l'intégration complète des grandes métropoles dans l'État romain. Par le biais des éléments mis en évidence, on a cherché à apporter des réponses à une série de questions relatives à plusieurs aspects du monde funéraire, en relation directe avec le contexte historique : statut des défunts, spécificité sexuelle, valeur matérielle ou symbolique des dépôts. L'étude de chaque déposition a permis de mettre en évidence plusieurs aspects de la gestualité qui se déroule autour de la mort du défunt au sein de ce grand groupe culturel, et leur évolution au cours des différentes époques considérées. / This thesis deals with the study of funerary set in Southern Etruria during the Hellenistic period based on a systematic gathering of all the data supplied by the numerous necropolis of the territory of Tarquinia, with particular attention to the « Etruria rupestre ». The detailed analysis of funerary set, coupled with that of funerary structures of the Etruscan-Roman site of Musarna, was the first step in a larger-scale reflection on the funeral and rituals practices attested in this region. Through the composition of the funerary assemblages, attempts have been made to identify elements that can better illustrate funerary customs and their evolution between the end of the 4th century BC. and the beginning of the 1st century BC., a chronological period characterized by the gradual conquest and colonization of the Etruscan territories, until the complete integration of the great metropolises in the Roman state. Through the elements highlighted, an attempt was made to answer a series of questions concerning several aspects of the funerary world directly related to the historical context: the status of the deceased, the gender specificity, the material or symbolic value of the deposits. The study of each deposition made it possible to highlight several aspects of the gestuality that takes place around the death of the deceased within this great cultural group, and its evolution during the different periods considered.

Les coutumes funéraires dans les provinces romaines reflètent les changements politiques, ethniques, économiques ou religieux survenus au cours du Haut-Empire. L'objectif de ce travail est de proposer une synthèse des pratiques funéraires au Haut-Empire en Pannonie et en Gaule lyonnaise afin qu'elle puisse servir de base solide pour de futures études et le traitement des documents inédits. A travers un bilan documentaire le plus exhaustif possible des données publiées et une analyse détaillée des informations aujourd'hui disponibles, il s'agit de mettre en évidence les tendances observables à l'échelle de la province mais aussi des particularités régionales. Cette étude, menée sur deux provinces de population autochtone majoritairement celtique, nous permet ainsi de mieux comprendre les tendances générales des pratiques funéraires dans les provinces occidentales, mais également de mettre en valeur des particularités régionales ou communautaires liées à diverses influences externes et des évolutions internes. Elle montre également la nécessité de s'intéresser à des indices parfois jugés secondaires, comme la position du mobilier ou son état, qui sont pourtant des indicateurs forts sinon plus représentatifs de ce qui était considéré par les communautés comme les moments forts des funérailles. / Funeral customs in the Roman provinces reflect political, ethnical, economical or religious changes which occurred during the Early Roman period. Their extensive study therefore allows understanding the influence of these events and the evolutions of communities. The main goal of this work is to propose a synthesis of the funerary practices of the Early Roman period in Pannonia and in Gallia Lugdunensis, so that it can serve as a solid basis for future studies and the treatment of unpublished documents. Through a documentary overview, as exhaustive as possible, of published data and a detailed analysis of the information available nowadays, it is to highlight the trends observable on the scale of the province but also regional particularities. This study, conducted in two provinces of predominantly Celtic indigenous population, helps us to understand the general trends of burial practices in the western provinces during the Early Roman Period, but it highlights also regional and local particularities, related to various external influences and internal developments. It also shows the need to focus on indices sometimes considered as secondary, as the position of the furnishings or their state, which however are more representative of what was seen by the communities as the strong moments of the funeral.

The main goal of the present research is to show the transformations after the death secularization in the city, since 1881, when the cemetery was founded till the 1950 s decade. The transformations occurred during this period are here represented by statuary, tombs and monuments elaborated by Giuoseppe Tomagnini, Vélez Family, V. Lazzeri, Rosada Family, Coluccini Brothers and Camillo dos Santos. Those artist-artisans responsible for that buildings were influenced by stylistic of the European funerary art, such as neoclassic and eclectic architecture, art nouveau, art déco and modern to attend to the local citizen needs in order to preserve their memory. The burial buildings found in the Saudade Cemitery, besides a local for reflection and memory, can be considered significant part of Historical and Cultural Patrimony of Campinas / O Cemitério da Saudade é considerado um museu a céu aberto por abrigar túmulos que representam e materializam a relação do homem com a morte na cidade de Campinas. Esta dissertação tem por objetivo mostrar as transformações após a secularização da morte na cidade, que se inicia em 1881 com a fundação desse primeiro cemitério público, até a década de 1950. As transformações ocorridas durante esse período são aqui apresentadas por meio das construções de Giuoseppe Tomagnini, Família Vélez, V. Lazzeri, Família Rosada, Irmãos Coluccini, Irmão Zarattinni e Camillo dos Santos. Esses artistas-artesãos, responsáveis pelas construções, apropriaram-se de referências estilísticas da arte funerária européia como o neoclássico, eclético, art nouveau, art deco e moderno para atender as necessidades dos cidadãos campineiros de perpetuar sua memória. Essas construções fazem do Cemitério da Saudade, além de local de reflexão e memória, parte significativa do Patrimônio Histórico e Cultural da cidade de Campinas
