White maize futures contracts in South Africa / Louisa Jacoba Krugel

Krugel, Louisa Jacoba January 2003 (has links)
Thesis (M.Com. (Economics))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2004.

The economics of stock index futures : theory and evidence

Holmes, Richard Roland January 1993 (has links)
This thesis aims to provide detailed investigation into the role and functioning of the FTSE-100 stock index futures contract, by examining four interrelated issues. Chapter 1 reviews the literature, demonstrating that stock index futures can increase investor utility by offering hedging and investment opportunities. Further, the price discovery role of futures is discussed. Chapter 2 investigates the risk return relationship for the FTSE-100 contract within a CAPM framework. While CAPM adequately explains returns prior to October 1987, post-crash the contract is riskier and excess returns and a day of the week effect are evident. Chapter 3 examines the impact of futures on the underlying spot market using GARCH, which allows examination of the link between information and volatility. While spot prices are more volatile post-futures, this is due to more rapid impounding of information. The view that futures destabilise spot markets and should be subject to further regulation is questioned. Chapter 4 examines futures market efficiency using the Johansen cointegration procedure and variance bounds tests which are developed here. Results suggest futures prices provide unbiased predictions of future spot prices for 1, 2 and 4 months prior to maturity of the contract. For 3, 5 and 6 months prior to maturity the unbiasedness hypothesis does not hold. Chapter 5 discusses the major role of futures; hedging. Hedge ratios and hedging effectiveness are examined in relation to duration and expiration effects. Hedge ratio stability is also examined. Finally, hedging strategies based on historical information are examined. Results show there are duration and expiration effect, hedge ratios are stationary and using historical information does not greatly reduce hedging effectiveness. The FTSE-100 contract is shown to be a highly effective means by which to hedge risk. Chapter 6 provides a summary and concluding remarks concerning the relevance of the research carried out here.

Technická analýza v aplikaci na vybrané mezinárodní trhy / The application of technical analysis in chosen international markets

Beránek, Jiří January 2011 (has links)
Diploma thesis focuses on the practical methods and application of technical analysis in international markets. Thesis is divided in three thematic parts. The first one focuses on the history and basic concepts of international exchange markets, futures contracts and the definition of basic terms which are essential for understanding the markets. Second part focuses on the methods of technical analysis which can be divided in two sections -- technical indicators and price action. All mentioned instruments are shown in real market data and charts. Third part focuses on the application of technical analysis in a chosen international market. The application goes through our trading system which combines appropriate technical indicators with price action formation supplemented by methods of money management. Several simulations were made on tested real historical data. The simulations differed in money management settings (automated stoploss tracking, Kelly's formula, Fixed ratio). To find the worst possible trading scenario was used Monte Carlo analysis.

Förmånsbeskattning av terminer : De skatterättsliga konsekvenserna av terminsavtal i incitamentsprogram

Klauser, Louise January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to examine two taxation questions that arise from the judgement by the Supreme Administrative Court regarding futures contracts in employee incentive plans. The questions concerns whether futures are to be classified as securities and if any restraint in the right of disposition might have an impact on the fringe benefits taxation according to chapter 10 section 11 of the Swedish Income Tax Act. As a result of the discussions in the thesis the author comes to the conclusion that futures might be classified as securities. The terminology regarding securities is not defined in the Swedish Income Tax Act but case-law and literature and also directives from the European Union stipulate demands that futures fulfil. According to the Swedish legislation it is crucial that the employee acquire a security in order for the fringe benefits taxation to apply. The author is of the opinion that when futures are a part of an employee incentive plan then they represent an economic value, which should be taxed as a benefit. The employee incentives plan could be restrained in the right of disposition. However the Supreme Administrative Court has in multiple cases found that it does not affect the classification of a security. The preparatory work shows that the purpose of chapter 10 section 11 in the Swedish Income Tax Act is to tax all benefits regardless of the restraints connected to them.  Based on the findings in the thesis the author is of the opinion that the decision by the Supreme Administrative Court regarding the fringe benefits taxation of futures is strange. This is because the decision might cause problem in the future interpretation of chapter 10 section 11 in the Swedish Income Tax Act.
