Border epistemologies : looking at Almodovar's queer genders

Bezerra Jr, Belidson D. January 2006 (has links)
The everyday practices of contemporary art education from grades K- 12 are marked by the neglect of the cultural experience of film and the disregard for issues of gender as well as the concealment of issues of sexuality. So it is in the confluence of visual culture, queer theory, art education and film studies that I posit my inquiry. I explore theoretical frameworks for understanding how we look at queer representations of gender and sexuality in visual culture, particularly focusing on Pedro Almodóvar’s filmography and its impact for the teaching and learning of visual culture in higher education and in secondary schools. The organizing questions are: How do Pedro Almodóvar’s film representations of queer sexuality and gender inform contemporary art education theory and practice? In what ways is the utilization of border epistemologies relevant for understanding representations of genders and sexualities in Almodóvar’s films? How does it inform art education practices? Also, this study fills a gap in the emerging critical literature in art education because, as a study focusing on queer visual representation and border epistemologies, it will consider intersections among these specific sites of knowledge, and such studies are rare in the field. I adopt a/r/tography and queer theory as my major frameworks because they allow for a transdisciplinary flow of spaces and places in which to engage in dialogue with numerous areas, disciplines and fields of study. The thesis suggests that queer discourses can assist visual culture education to embrace the study of visual representation of social issues specifically gender and sexuality - as an instrument of critical pedagogy. Further, these discourses confuse and provoke entrenched notions about art, representation, and common sense by continually changing concepts of gender and sexuality, thus encouraging pedagogies of confrontation as opposed to assimilation and uncritical reproduction. These discourses suggest how one might define and establish visual culture education practices, while encouraging interactions between viewer and objects of vision. A discussion of these discourses provides tools for visual culture educators to study cultural domination while empowering and enabling students to become critical producers of meanings and texts as they resist manipulation and domination. / Education, Faculty of / Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP), Department of / Graduate

Self-employment gap between natives and immigrants in Sweden

Song, Yidan January 2015 (has links)
This paper examines three questions orderly with the help of the European Social Survey (ESS) pooled cross section data. Firstly, whether there is a gap of probability of being self-employed existed between natives and immigrants in Sweden. Secondly, whether there is heterogeneity existed within different ethnic group of immigrants and thirdly, if that heterogeneity existed across genders. The results show that there is no significant gap of probability of being self-employed between natives and immigrants in Sweden, and it can be due to the heterogeneity within the immigrant group itself. The results of logit model indicate that the probability of being self-employed for immigrants from Asian countries (the Middle East countries excluded) are significantly different from Swedish natives, and that for immigrants from the Middle East countries and Asian countries (the Middle East countries excluded) are both significantly different from immigrants from the Nordic countries (Sweden excluded). Furthermore, when looking by the perspective of genders, the results reveal that the heterogeneity existed when examining the groups for both genders can only be found in male immigrant group, while female immigrant group do not appear to be heterogeneous.

Interrelationships and assessment criteria of gross motor skill development and obesity of preschool children in Potchefstroom / Dorita du Toit

Du Toit, Dorita January 2001 (has links)
In the holistic development of the young child, optimal gross motor development has an important influence on optimal physical, perceptual, cognitive, language, affective-social and normative (behavioural) development (Kapp, 1991; Gallahue & Ozmun, 1998), and is therefore considered to be essential in the preschool years. The goal of this dissertation was to present the results of much-needed recent research on gross motor development of a group of children living in an urban area in South Africa, by 1) determining the current levels of gross motor development, 2) assessing the prevalence of and the influence of overweight and obesity on gross motor development, 3) establishing the relationship between overweight and obesity, gross motor development and gender, 4) determining the relationship between quantitative and qualitative assessment results of the one leg balance, and 5) investigating the occurrence of gender differences in gross motor development, in a group of 3-6 year old children living in Potchefstroom. These aims were addressed by structuring the dissertation in eight chapters, Chapter 1 constituting the introduction and statement of the problem, Chapter 2 a review of relevant literature, Chapters 3 to 7 constituting 5 research articles addressing the specific aims of the study, and Chapter 8 including the summary, conclusions and recommendations. For each of the 5 research articles, the participants were 3-6 year old children (N = 514) who lived in Potchefstroom and had been enrolled in the movement development program (MDP) presented by movement developmentalists of the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education (P.U. for C.H.E.). Descriptive statistics (Chapter 3-7), practical significance based on effect sizes (Chapter 4 and 5), 2 way frequency tables and Pearson Chi-square as well as the Phi for two-way tables (Chapter 6), and t-values, degrees of difference and p-values (Chapter 7) were used. The current levels of gross motor development of preschool children in Potchefstroom (Chapter 3) were determined by testing a total of 462 3-6 year old children (215 males and 247 females) on 8 gross motor tasks, and comparing the results to norms and criteria as found in the literature. The 3, 4 and 5 year olds compared favourably to their counterparts in all the tests except for balance walk and catching, standing long jump in the 4 year olds and throwing in the 5 year old group. The 6 year old group scored lower than the norms and criteria in all the tests except for standing long jump, indicating alarming implications for school readiness. Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 examined the prevalence of and the differences in the quantitative and qualitative execution of four gross motor tasks (standing long jump, hopping, one leg balance and catching) between groups of overweight and obese (0) and nonobese (NO) boys, and girls, respectively. In the male study, 17 0-participants and 49 NO-participants were compared, while 13 0-participants and 54 NO-participants were used in the female study. Differences of practical significance (medium or large effects) in favour of nonobese groups were found in all the quantitative and qualitative tests among the male participants, while similar differences were found in only the quantitative tests for the one leg balance and all the qualitative tests among the female participants. A prevalence of overweight and obesity of 16.35% was found among the boys and 11.81% among the girls. The results indicated that 0-children of the ages 3-6 years generally compare poorly to NO-children in relation to gross motor proficiency. In Chapter 6, the one leg balance ability of 514 subjects was quantitatively and qualitatively assessed using valid norms and criteria found in literature. A positive relationship of statistical significance (p :S 0.05) was established between the quantitative and qualitative scores of the one leg balance in every age group. A relatively large percentage (44.10%) of 3 year olds scored well above the average level for their age in both types of assessment, indicating that the norms and criteria used might not be appropriate for 3 year olds. Relatively large percentages (25.27% - 27.47%) of the 6 year olds scored below the average level for 5 year olds in the qualitative assessment, suggesting developmental balance delays or disorders. These findings indicate that a quantitative and qualitative assessment should be combined to assure a more accurate assessment. The results of Chapter 7, involving 221 male and 243 female participants, showed significant gender differences in hopping and balancing on the right leg in favour of the females in the 3 year old group, and in the standing long jump and throwing for distance in favour of the males in the 5 and 6 year old groups, indicating that separate norms should be used for the different genders when assessing standing long jump and throwing for distance in 5 and 6 year olds. In the light of the findings of these studies, recommendations presented in Chapter 8 for the assessment and structuring of a programme for the optimal development of gross motor skills in preschool children, living in urban areas in South Africa, include that: 1) special attention should be given to the optimal development of gross motor skills of 6 year olds in a structured gross motor development programme, 2) obesity should be addressed even in the preschool years, and activities for the specific skills shown to be related to overweight and obesity (balance skills and catching in boys and girls and standing long jump in boys) should also be specifically emphasized in these children, 3) both a quantitative and a qualitative assessment should be used specifically in the one leg balance assessment and is recommended for other fundamental motor assessments, and 4) separate norms should be used for the assessment of the standing long jump and throwing for distance in 5 and 6 year olds, and more emphasis should be placed on ball skills in girls, and co-ordination skills of boys in the structuring of a movement development programme. / Thesis (Ph.D. (Human Movement Science))--Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, 2002

January 2010 (has links)
Abstract: Considering the series of texts/discourse produced by the writer Caio Fernando Abreu (CFA, from here on) namely his short stories, letters, interviews, chronicles, novels, plays, forewords of his revised books and so on, we selected the texts that according to the established criteria to the progress of this thesis were considered as the most representative ones. To our point of view it is in the dialog which contemplates the literary production of the writer in its different genders of discourse (BAKHTIN, 2003) that is possible to glimpse the personae of the writer CFA, in other words, the representations of writer that he made for himself, his family, friends, the general public and the critics. Our hypothesis is that the main characteristic particularizes the work of this writer in the literary context of the second half of the twenty century in Brazil is done by an association between the appropriation and the re-elaboration of his own voice and someone else's voice, procedures that instantiate the making of other texts/discourses, the mise-en-abyme of his personae as writer, instance that get a long with one another in a self-elucidative and uninterrupted way and the pentimento, an effect produced by the CFA's self and anthropophagic process, which make this work be, in a sight that contemplates as a constellation, a same and a another. Strictly speaking, the dialogic potency in the texts/discourses pronounced by several personae of writer CFA would contribute to the myths problematization of author, authorship, geniality and inspiration valid especially in Romanticism and in Vanguard Arts. / Doutor

O princípio da igualdade em gênero e a participação das mulheres nas organizações sindicais de trabalhadores / Gender equality principle and womens participation in trade unions

Thomé, Candy Florencio 29 March 2012 (has links)
This work aims to study the importance of women workers participation in trade unions as a way to combat gender inequality in the labor market. There are a significant number of legal rules applicable in Brazilian legal system in order to combat gender inequality, with a repressive approach. However, the negative consequences of sexual division of labor persist, perpetuating stereotypical gender roles. It is imperative, therefore, not only the guarantee of protection against negative discrimination, but also to guarantee women\'s access to the labor market, through affirmative actions. In this sense, womens workers participation in trade unions activities is a major way to ensure this access, as it enables women\'s empowerment, providing greater possibility for women to exercise power and citizenship in the public sphere in which democracy is constructed, and greater legal legitimacy of conventional norms regarding gender equality, given the normative role of unions. This participation in union activities, however, is fraught with a number of difficulties. To overcome these difficulties, it is necessary that womens participation in trade union organizations increases, not only with a greater presence of women in these organizations, but also with a greater capacity for decision making process, through the increase of women in decision-making bodies of trade unions. For that, it´s necessary the implementation of affirmative actions to combat the difficulties in women\'s participation in trade unions.

The following research has been enunciated from questions about the constant clashes lived in a classroom when themes regarding other sexualities, pleasures and another gender expressions, dissidents from the heteronormative identities are brought up, on a College everyday. From such tense rendezvous, some quests were summoned, such as: - Which psychology we are teaching? - What kind of psychologists are graduating nowadays? And, yet, one other quest: - Is there a psi identity? Within this research, through seven narratives, other possibilities of naming ourselves psychologist in any gender are allocated. Due to this research’s values the techniques and the amount of strategies that can as contribute for the magnification of the psychologies and their connexions with reality and the social movements, as denouncing the strategies that can enclosure them in concepts and descontextualized methodologies which reificate biopolitics of maintenance to the Neoliberal state. The maps in which such research-implication had drawn, are composed by the cartography and genealogy tools, accompanied by authors such as Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, besides of feminists authors e.g: Donna Haraway and Paul B. Preciado. The cartographies that were announced through the chapters highlight the necessary agency of new ethic-aesthetic and political contracts within the territory of psychology graduation In order to produce other psychologies and hence creating other methods of psychological being. This can be achieved through deterritorialisation of traditional theories and life measuring procedures, with clear and little naive, intentions of debuilding of strategies, brought forth and validated for the sheperd psychology, in aid of the emancipation of the experimentations of bodies in sexual practices, affective, politics and ethics of psychologies and queerized psychologists.
