The cross-cultural leader: a comparative study of leadership behaviours in China and New Zealand

Ao, Xiang January 2008 (has links)
National cultures play a critical role in effective leadership and organisational success in international businesses. Contemporary organisations are therefore challenged by cross-cultural leadership needs to address increasing diversity. In the past decades, there has been a growing interest in studies of non-Western leadership. Recent papers have focused particularly on leadership in the Asia-Pacific region. This paper compares leadership in China and New Zealand, based on the data collected by using the GLOBE (Global Leadership and Organisational Behaviour Effectiveness) project leadership questionnaire. In addition, the paper reviews the main findings of previous research in order to investigate the similarities and differences in preferred leadership behaviours/characteristics in both cultures, while attempting to examine the consistency of current findings against the previous GLOBE studies. Significant differences of leadership behaviours between China and New Zealand have been identified. This paper generally supports the findings of previous GLOBE studies that charismatic/value-based leadership is the universally contributing factor towards outstanding leadership and self-protective leadership is the universally negative factor against leadership excellence. Findings in this paper may contribute to further understanding of leadership practice in these two countries. Future research should be undertaken to examine the effects of cultural differences on organisational practice by a more comprehensive research method.

ABSTRACT This paper is a case study of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and it aims to investigate the theatre management model focused on the strategies used to build and keep their audience, which are responsible for generating the most part of the revenue collected by that arts organisation. The paper also presents the theatre’s building process, under the leadership of the american Sam Wanamaker, and the challenges faced by the theatre managers to build the space that would be the most colser replica to the original theatre built in the sixteenth century by William Shakespeare and his colleagues . For that, the study was conducted through a field research and it was supported by the theoretical references of authors such as Philip Kotler , Joanne Scheff , Bonita Kolb and others. Although the actions developed by the theater have being applied in a specific political, social and economic context , they can be adapted and used in other locations and by other managers interested in rethinking the way they deal with their public and market their artistic products. The research approach focuses on theatre management and can collaborate with studies for this field, which is yet little explored by researchers interested in the arts.

Nonwork Role Importance as a Moderator to the Congruence-Satisfaction Relation

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Individuals are attracted to occupational environments that align with their interests and personality characteristics (Holland, 1985, 1997). When an individual's attributes (i.e., needs, abilities, values and/or interests) align with the occupational environment's characteristics an individual is more satisfied. Past research suggests this relation is modest at best, hovering between .20 and .30 (Meyer et al., 2001, c.f. Wilkins & Tracey, 2014), with slightly higher estimates (ranging from .24 to .35) depending on how the variables of person and environment were measured (Kristof-Brown, Zimmerman, & Johnson, 2005). Several factors contribute to such low estimates, most notably the role of moderator variables in suppressing or exacerbating the true magnitude of this relation. A moderator that has yet to be explored is that of nonwork role priority, or the degree to which an individual's work identity is valued relative to other role identities. In the current study, three hypotheses were posited to investigate nonwork role priorities as a potential moderator to the congruence-satisfaction relation. Latent class analysis was used to apply a person-centered approach to understanding response patterns and differences in these roles. The sample was differentiated best by a two-class solution and the class variable in all three hierarchical regression models explained about five percent of the variance in job satisfaction, which suggests that work and nonwork role priority are meaningful to understanding individual career happiness. Class was not identified as a significant moderator to the congruence-satisfaction relation. Discussion of limitations to the current study and recommendations for future work in this area are presented. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Counseling Psychology 2016

O oceano Shakespeare = uma (auto)biografia / Ocean Shakespeare : an (auto)biography

Marin, Ronaldo 18 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Ernesto Giovanni Boccara / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-18T04:28:36Z (GMT). The purpose of this research was to evaluate the possibility that William Shakespeare's plays were composed in close relation with the development and practice of the players of the company where he was a partner and for which he wrote most of his plays, namely The Chamberlain's Men that after Queen Elizabeth's death became The King's Men. The origin of Shakespeare, unlike the popular authors of his time who graduated from universities and were known as the "university wits", made him an author much closer to the actors than were these other authors, allowing him to make more profound use of the characteristics of these artists, reaching a level of reality and a behavioral truth rarely seen before. Consequently, because of its origin, we also argue that Shakespeare's dramatic work reaches its fullness only when staged and placed on stage through the living energy of the actor. If we are limited only to the reading, despite experiencing some delight, without the effects of the dramatic action the work becomes diminished, being less efficient regarding the deep and full involvement of the senses. Finally, it is also argued that, because they are so fundamentally involved in the process regarding his work, the actors are Shakespeare's true and natural heirs, and one must resort to them - their art and talent - whenever decoding his work. Ultimately it is, as with every dramatic action, the "physicality" of the actor and all the human essence that matters more than the philosophical ramblings / Doutorado / Artes Visuais / Doutor em Artes

Managers' perceptions of organizational cultures in Austria

Bös, Bernhard 10 1900 (has links) (PDF)

Athletic Surfaces’ Influence on the Thermal Environment: An Evaluation of Wet Bulb Globe Temperature in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: Exertional heat stroke continues to be one of the leading causes of illness and death in sport in the United States, with an athlete’s experienced microclimate varying by venue design and location. A limited number of studies have attempted to determine the relationship between observed wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) and WBGT derived from regional weather station data. Moreover, only one study has quantified the relationship between regionally modeled and on-site measured WBGT over different athletic surfaces (natural grass, rubber track, and concrete tennis court). The current research expands on previous studies to examine how different athletic surfaces influence the thermal environment in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area using a combination of fieldwork, modeling, and statistical analysis. Meteorological data were collected from 0700–1900hr across 6 days in June and 5 days in August 2019 in Tempe, Arizona at various Sun Devil Athletics facilities. This research also explored the influence of surface temperatures on WBGT and the changes projected under a future warmer climate. Results indicate that based on American College of Sports Medicine guidelines practice would not be cancelled in June (WBGT≥32.3°C); however, in August, ~33% of practice time was lost across multiple surfaces. The second-tier recommendations (WBGT≥30.1°C) to limit intense exercise were reached an average of 7 hours each day for all surfaces in August. Further, WBGT was calculated using data from four Arizona Meteorological Network (AZMET) weather stations to provide regional WBGT values for comparison. The on-site (field/court) WBGT values were consistently higher than regional values and significantly different (p<0.05). Thus, using regionally-modeled WBGT data to guide activity or clothing modification for heat safety may lead to misclassification and unsafe conditions. Surface temperature measurements indicate a maximum temperature (170°F) occurring around solar noon, yet WBGT reached its highest level mid-afternoon and on the artificial turf surface (2–5PM). Climate projections show that WBGT values are expected to rise, further restricting the amount of practice and games than can take place outdoors during the afternoon. The findings from this study can be used to inform athletic trainers and coaches about the thermal environment through WBGT values on-field. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Geography 2020

Representation of China's Image on The Globe and Mail: A Corpus-Based Critical Discourse Analysis from the Perspective of van Dijk’s Ideology Square

Wang, Mengting 23 September 2021 (has links)
In early 2020, the outbreak of COVID-19 in Wuhan put China in the spotlight of international news. China’s development in the field of politics, society, and economics still occupies media attention in the context of the global public health crisis. Previous studies have shown that China’s image in the western media, including the Canadian media, adopted a generally negative tone. The objective of this thesis is to investigate China’s image in one of the mainstream Canadian media platforms, the Globe and Mail, during the whole epidemic year of 2020. This research is based upon news reports published in 2020 by the Globe and Mail and is conducted with the support of corpus linguistic methodology and with the guideline of Critical Discourse Analysis, especially van Dijk’s ideology square. In order to discern and identify the image of China as portrayed by the Globe and Mail, the underlying discourse strategies are analyzed. Findings show that “China”, “Chinese government”, and “Chinese citizens” are the main subjects that make up the broad concept of China’s image. And in China’s related news report in the Globe and Mail from 31 December 2019 to 31 December 2020, (1) rhetoric devices, including number game, news source selection, illustration, irony, implication, presumption, vagueness, comparison, and history as lesson, are employed to polarize the image of the Chinese government and the Canadian government. (2) China’s image in the Globe and Mail is generally negative, which can be described via four aspects: China as a threat, callous, dishonest/untrustworthy, and powerful (3) the China-related news as constructed by the Globe and Mail reflects its own particular national ideologies and interests.
