Fiberföstärkning av Limträbalkar

Glulam is a product that was engineered to make use of timber in a more efficient way. Bychoosing timber of similar quality and discarding natural defects during production, thedevelopment of a stronger cross-section is achieved.Carbon fiber is a relatively new material with a high tension capacity. This feature is used toexamine how the bending capacity of the beams improve by adhering carbon fiber laminateson the lower edge of the beamsThe strength of the material is tested with three experiments: carbon fiber on the bottom of thebeam (a), carbon fiber attached to the lower sides of the beam (b) and carbon fiber in thebeam, covered with a layer of wood (c) The results show that the first case, where the carbon fiber is attached to the bottom of thebeam, gave the best result with an increase in capacity of 59 % compared to the nonreinforcedcontrol. The other two cases also show an improvement in capacity, beam-type 3had a capacity increase of 47% and beam-type 4 increased with 25 %Tests were also made with glulam beams reinforced with fiberglass, but these tests were notanalyzed in depth because the purpose was to compare the capacity to carbon fiber. Thisbeam improved its capacity by 40.3%.The tests show that carbon fiber as a reinforcement material for glulam is a good choice whenthere is a requirement for stronger cross-sections in both new production and renovation ofold buildings. However there are some disadvantages to carbon fiber, for example costs andincreased demands on work environment, which makes steel a cheaper option.

Intrinsics: An Exploration in Tectonic Expression

I've titled my thesis, "Intrinsics" because my architectural design is an attempt to respond to what is inherent in the materials, in the way materials are joined, in the flow of forces through the structure, in the site and surroundings, and in the human nature of a person using the building type I'm designing. This is a tectonic approach, so my thesis is also "An Exploration of Tectonic Expression" with a Montessori school as a project vehicle. The site is next to the Roanoke Public Library in Elmwood Park in Roanoke, Virginia. The primary materials are glue-laminated wood beams and arches, metal connectors, and reinforced concrete walls. I explored what can happen if each layer of a glue-laminated member is allowed to act independently, separating from the girder in appropriate places to recombine into a new whole. The monolith transforms into a pattern of parts. / Master of Architecture

System:Forest

What I have tried to do in this project is to come up with a system of building that gives the building and the materials within, a chance for a longer life. A system that does not only make it easier to change the layout on the inside, but also makes it easier to disassemble the entire structure with minimal damage to the materials and the surroundings.  The pillar-beam glulam system is inspired by the Scandinavian and asian wood traditions. With wood joints and bolts, the inner structure can be assembled, disassembled and reassembled multiple times. By Designing for deconstruction the materials are not wasted if the building needs to move, and by making the layout flexible on the inside, the building can serve different functions and hold other family constellations within without too much effort or cost.  The appearance of the system is meant to make you think of trees, with the stems and branches and holes between the leaves where the sun can come through. This is something that has come through the different iterations of the system and the buildings, together with the initial research of wood and the forests and through the process it eventually evolved into System:Forest.

Uppgiften var att rita ett gemensamt samlingsplats för lokala gymnasiestudenter på Slakthusområdet i södra Stockholm. Byggnaden ska också fungera som plats för olika kultur evenemang och aktiviteter. Det var lätt för mig att välja denna uppgift, eftersom gymnasiestudenter har inte tillgång till öppna studieytor på samma sätt som till exempel universitetstudenter, även om gymnasieutbildingen innebär också mycket eget studerande. När jag gick i gymnasiet så bodde jag nästan på det lokala biblioteket. För mig var det nästan ett annat hem där jag studerade och träffade gamla och nya vänner.  Trots att tomten på Slakthusområdet är ganska trång så ville jag skapa en öppen känsla och ett fritt flöde i byggnaden. Jag kom fram till triangel-formade våningsplan och stora trappor.  Det ska vara en harmonisk stämning i byggnaden för att det ska vara lätt att koncentrera sig och kunna fly vardags- och skolstress. Det finns undersökningar som visar att trä som konstruktionsmaterial har stressdämpande egenskaper och andra positiva hälsoeffekter och därför det kändes bra att använda trä i en läromiljö. Byggnaden bärs av limträpelare. Hisschakt fungerar som stabilisering. Träreglarna i fasaden stabiliserar byggnaden diagonalt. / The assignment was to design a studying centre for the local upper-secondary school students in Slakthusområdet, southern Stockholm. The building would be a place for studying as well as for different culture events and activities, including a library and a theater scene. For me it was easy to choose this specific task. High school students do not have open and  public places for studying like university students do. As a upper secondary school student I almost lived at the local library. I, as many many other students, studied there, met new and old friends and almost lived there.  The given site on an old industry area in southern Stockholm is quite small but I still wanted to have an open atmosphere and free flow in the building. That’s how the triangle-shaped floors and wide, open stairs were formed.  Wood as a construction material is noticed to have positive, stress-reducing features. That’s why it felt natural to use wood in a studying environment. The gluelam columns are load bearing. The elevator shaft in the middle as well as  diagonal wooden beams on the facade are stabilizing elements in the building.

Detta examensarbete har gjorts på uppdrag av Skanska Teknik med handledning av Johan Sjödin. Arbetets syfte var att jämföra olika limträförband, utförda av antingen spikningsplåtar eller WT-T skruvar, och komma fram till den bästa lösningen med hänsyn till bärförmåga, kostnad och utförandetid. I ett projekt har de spikningsplåtar, som används vid limträförband, börjat rosta under extremt fuktiga förhållanden fastän spikningsplåtarna är rostfria enligt tillverkaren. En fördel med WT-T skruvar är att de är gömda inne i träet och på så sätt inte i direkt kontakt med den aggressiva miljön, men även skyddad mot brand. Andra fördelar med WT-T är att utförandetiden är kort och kostnaden är lägre än spikningsplåtsalternativet. Ett experiment har gjorts för att undersöka hur träet med inborrade WT-T skruvar beter sig under uttorkning. / This diploma work was made under commission by Skanska Teknik, with guidance by Johan Sjödin. The purpose of this work was to compare different gluelam joints, performed by nailing plates or WT-T screws, and find out the best solution with regard to carrying ability, cost and performance time. In a certain project have the nailing plates, which are used in gluelam joints, corroded under extremely damp circumstances although the nailing plates are rust free according to the manufacturer. An advantage with WT-T screws is that they are hidden inside of the tree and in that way not in directly contact with the aggressive environment, but also protected against fire. The other advantages with WT-T screws are that the performance time is short and the cost is lower than the nailing plates-alternative. An experiment has been carried out to investigate how the tree with WT-T screws behaves itself during drying period.

Sportovní hala / Sports hall

The aim of this master‘s thesis is to design a sports hall including an accommodation facility in Hradec Králové. Sports hall is situated in a town district called Věkoše. It is tree-storey building equipped with combined pillar‘s and wall‘s support system. Building is founded on solid slab and propped piles. Pillars are made of steel, walls are made of ceramic bricks and curved roof is made of gluelam beams and roof trusses with aluminum cover system Kalzip. There are two single ply flat roofs. Also basement is a part of the building. For spectators two separated auditoriums with steel support system are designed. The accommodation for twenty people was split into ten rooms. It is designed as barrier free building for both sportsmen and audience.
