Using Christianity as a marketing platform on emerging media

Dunn, Charlie Everett 22 November 2013 (has links)
Christianity has a long history that often became intertwined with the development of modern day media. This paper aims to draw a comparison between the use of Christianity as a marketing device during the Middle Ages and modern times. Using McLuhan’s timeline of media epochs we are able to trace the changes of media through human history. This timeline provides us the means to analyze the ways in which Christianity was used as a marketing device to advance the adoption of new mediums. The Middle Ages’ reliance on Christian networks to spread information enabled Gutenberg to gain widespread adoption of his printing press. The recent transition to the electronic age also shows how new mediums can use this same network to perpetuate messages. In modern times the electronic age has reproduced an environment conducive to the spread of Christian messages. Social media networks like Twitter exhibit increased interaction levels among prominent Christian leaders. The comparison of these two periods in time showcases the strength of the Christian network, even today. Furthermore it provides evidence of the prediction made by McLuhan that the interconnectedness of the electronic age would bring about a new type of oral tribe culture. This global village brought about by the Internet allows ancient communication practices to flourish once more. / text

Encourage democracy : Creating a secure and reliable voting function in WordPress

Johanson, Christine January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of my project has been to create a voting feature on a campaign site for WWF, where visitors to the website can participate in voting and vote for different cities around the world to improve their sustainability efforts. The website has been developed in WordPress based on specified requirements, including security and voting frequency. The development of the website and the plugin has been done in collaboration with other developers in the project. For the website, a custom WordPress theme was created, and the majority of the site was constructed using custom Gutenberg blocks. A survey was performed to compare and analyze existing plugins in WordPress, and an evaluation showed that a custom-developed plugin for the project was the most suitable option. To achieve maximum security on the website, existing security features in WordPress were used, and control of the voting frequency were implemented. The result of the project culminated in a voting feature on the website, where votes were controlled, and the administration interface required authorized users. User tests of the website with colleagues on the company were planned, but due to time constraints, they could not be carried out before the project deadline. These tests were primarily intended to verify the functionality of the voting feature.

Master thesis "Letterpress - Origin of Manual Typesetting" consists of the theoretical and the practical part. Theoretical part describes the origin and development of book printing and printed Latin script - proces of type casting and typesetting. Then, the life Johannes Gutenberg is briefly described. The information was partially ontains printed graphical compositions created using wooden letters for script printing in combination with two other graphical techniques of printing from height - monotype and linocut. The part of this work became the experimenting with graphical creative means.

Classification of Fiction Genres : Text classification of fiction texts from Project Gutenberg

Bucher, Rolf January 2018 (has links)
Stylometric analysis in text classification is most often used in authorship attribution studies. This thesis used a machine learning algorithm, the Naive Bayes Classifier, in a text classification task comparing stylometric and lexical features. The texts were extracted from the Project Gutenberg website and were comprised of three genres: detective fiction, fantasy, and science fiction. The aim was to see how well the classifier performed in a supervised learning task when it came to discerning genres from one another. R was used to extract the texts from Project Gutenberg and Python script was used to run the experiment. Approximately 1978 texts were extracted and preprocessed before univariate filtering and tf-idf weighting was used as the lexical feature while average sentence length, average word length, number of characters, number of punctuation marks, number of uppercase words, number of title case words, and parts-of-speech tags for nouns, verbs, and adjectives were generated as the feature sets for the topic independent stylometric features. Normalization was performed using the ℓ² norm for the tf-idf weighting, with the ℓ² norm and z-score standardization for the stylometric features. Multinomial Naive Bayes was performed on the lexical feature set and Gaussian Naive Bayeson the stylometric set, both with 10-fold cross-validation. Precision was used as the measure by which to assess the performance of the classifier. The classifier performed better in the lexical features experiment than the stylometric features experiment, suggesting that downsampling, more stylometric features, as well as more classes would have been beneficial.
