Ayisyen kite lakay (Haitianos deixam suas casas) : um estudo etnomusicológico do musicar de artistas imigrantes haitianos no estado do Rio Grande do Sul

Santos, Caetano Maschio January 2018 (has links)
The present thesis constitutes an ethnomusicological study of the musicking of Haitian immigrant artists in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The ethnographic work consisted in participant-observation conducted in events of the Haitian diasporic group, musical performances, recording sessions, interviews and radio broadcasting, done with/by various Haitian artists. The research was based in a collaborative and participative work ethos, in which I exercised the role of mediator and social actor within the actual phenomenon studied, and included virtual fieldwork in social and communication networks. By means of an autonomy of migration gaze, the purpose of this work was to analyze, through the music of Haitian immigrant artists: transnational flows and dimensions, issues of cosmopolitanism inherent to the Haitian condition as black migrants in Brazil, the maintenance and repositioning of sociocultural identities, as well as anxieties regarding religion and processes of racial othering.

"El negro trás de la oreja": The Contemporary Portrayal of Blacks in Mainstream Media and Popular Music in the Dominican Republic

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: This master's thesis examines negative stereotypes of blackness in mainstream media in the Dominican Republic, and analyzes the manner in which racial identity has been reinforced and contested. Discourse analysis is utilized to analyze the language and rhetoric of editorials from Listin Diario. The rationale for this study is to assess how Dominicans have learned about blackness through the depictions in media and popular music, and therefore draw conclusions as to how Dominicans view their own racial identity. Considerable attention will be paid to the years between 2010-2013, using the Haitian earthquake disaster of 2010 and Verdict TC 0168-13 of the Dominican Constitutional Tribunal of 2013 as major historical events to frame the study. To these assumptions, this inquiry addresses the following questions: How have Haitians been portrayed in the mainstream newspaper of Listin Diario between the period of 2010-2013? How do the pedagogies in media and popular music educate Dominicans about portrayals of blackness during this period? What are the historiographical roots of these portrayals, particularly regarding the dynamics of race and citizenship? I will demonstrate that the prevailing depictions of Haitians adhere to a historically oriented construction of Dominican identity, known as "Dominicanidad" or "Dominicanness," and that these depictions largely omit African heritage as a contributor to national identity. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. Social and Cultural Pedagogy 2014

The research drew on the study of the environmental displaced of Haitians to Brazil from the earthquake that destroyed the country in 2010. The actors chosen for the analysis of cooperation for the protection of Haitians were: the Brazilian government, the UN system and civil society organizations, taking as an example “Missão Paz”, an organization linked to the Catholic Church, located in São Paulo that welcomes the world migrants. The research problem investigation was to what extent there was cooperation between actors for the protection of social rights of Haitians. The method chosen for the analysis of the research object was the qualitative, allowing the differentiated evaluation of specific documents and bibliographies on migration and Haiti. For purposes of this research used various national and international normative instruments for the protection of migrants worldwide. Research has shown that the experience of the environmental movement of Haitians forced the redefinition of Brazilian public policy towards foreigners and that cooperation between actors is still incipient in the national scene. The suggestion was reached that it is necessary to draw up a specific convention to protect these people, once the international regime of current protection relegates environmental shifted to a secondary plane.

Initial placement methods for Haitian adult ESOL students : the NYS place test plus profile data compared to subjective assessment

Alterman, Dorothy R. 22 March 1994 (has links)
Few valid and reliable placement procedures are available to assess the English language proficiency of adults who enroll in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programs. Whereas placement material exists for children and university ESOL students, the needs of students in adult community education programs have not been adequately addressed. Furthermore, the research suggests that a number of variables, such as, native language, age, prior schooling, length of residence, and employment are related to second language acquisition. Numerous studies contribute to our understanding of the relationship of these factors to second language acquisition of Spanish-speaking students. Again, there is a void in the research investigating the factors affecting second language acquisition and consequently, appropriate placement of Haitian Creole-speaking students. This study compared a standardized instrument, the NYS Place Test, used alone and in combination with a writing sample in English, to subjective judgement of a department coordinator for initial placement of Haitian adult ESOL students in a community education program. The study also investigated whether or not consideration of student profile data improved the accuracy of the test. Finally, the study sought to determine if a relationship existed between student profile data and those who withdrew from the program or did not enter a class after registering. Analysis of the data by crosstabulation and chi-square revealed that the standardized NYS Place Test was at least as accurate as subjective department coordinator placement and that one procedure could be substituted for li other. Although the writing sample in English improved accuracy of placement by the NYS test, the results were not significant. Of the profile variables, only length of residence was found to be significantly related to accuracy of placement using the NYS Place Test. The number of incorrect placements was higher for those students who lived in the host country from twenty-five to one hundred ten months. A post hoc analysis of NYS test scores according to level showed that those learners who placed in level three also had a significantly higher incidence of incorrect placements. No significant relationship was observed between the profile variables and those who withdrew from the program or registered but did not enter a class.
