Reaktioner på emotioner : Glada kvinnor och arga män?

Trots att Sveriges rankas som ett av världens mest jämställda länder lever fortfarande föreställningar om vilka egenskaper som är typiskt kvinnliga respektive manliga kvar. Tidigare studier har visat att emotion i kombination med kön påverkar hur snabbt en känsla uppfattas. Ilska upptäcktes till exempel snabbare hos män än kvinnor och glädje snabbare hos kvinnor än män. Syftet med föreliggande studie var således att söka svar på om könskategorisering gör skillnad för emotionsigenkänning. Genom en onlineenkät fick respondenterna (n=89) kategorisera emotionerna glad eller arg på manliga och kvinnliga ansikten. Medelvärdet på responstiderna beräknades och genom en 2 x 2 beroende ANOVA, med kön och emotion som beroende variabler, erhölls en signifikant huvudeffekt av både emotion och kön. Dock kunde ingen interaktionseffekt visas. Detta talar för att de stereotyper som tidigare forskning redogjort för eventuellt inte föreligger i en samtida svensk kontext. Vidare verkar det som kvinnor inte är behäftad med en lika snäv stereotyp som män. Detta eftersom kvinnors emotioner överlag identifieras signifikant snabbare än män.

Effects of Facial and Vocal Emotion on Word Recognition in 11-to-13-month-old infants

The speech commonly addressed to infants (infant-directed speech or IDS) is believed to have multiple functions, including communication of emotion and highlighting linguistic aspects of speech. However, these two functions are most often studied separately so that the influence of emotional prosody (the changes in intonation and vocal quality that relate to emotion) on linguistic processing in infants has rarely been addressed. Given that language learning during infancy occurs in the context of natural infant-caretaker exchanges that most certainly include emotion communication and co-regulation, it is important to integrate the concepts of emotional communication and linguistic communication in studying language learning. This study examined the influence of both positive (happy) and negative (sad) face+voice contexts on word recognition in 11-to-13-month-old infants. It was hypothesized that infants would learn and subsequently recognize words when they were delivered in a happy context, but will experience more difficulty in learning and/or recognition of the same words when delivered in a sad context. The general pattern of results confirmed these predictions in that after habituating to sentences containing a specific target nonsense word, infants in the Happy Condition recovered their attention to the same sentences with a novel target word. In contrast, infants in the Sad Condition showed no significant recovery to a change in target words. These results contribute to our understanding of how emotional tone can facilitate and/or attenuate attention in older infants as they engage in language learning with their caretakers. / Ph. D.

The Influence of Happy Faces on Spatiotemporal Vision

Past research demonstrates that fearful faces lead to an increase in temporal and a decrease in spatial gap detection, an effect proposed to be caused by a flow of input to the magnocellular pathways from the amygdala to the visual system (Bocanegra & Zeelenberg, 2009). The amygdala is also active for positive and arousing stimuli, including happy faces. The current study extends past research by presenting happy facial cues just before a gap detection task. Facial stimuli (i.e., happy/neutral faces) were presented in the periphery of the receptive field and quickly followed by a Landolt circle. Half of the participants were asked to detect a temporal gap and half a spatial gap. Response accuracy of gap detection was measured using signal detection theory. Consistent with past research on fearful faces, positive expressions were expected to facilitate temporal gap detection but not spatial gap detection when happy faces were used as cues in gap detection tasks. The current study found no difference in spatial or temporal gap detection given the emotional cue that preceded gap detection on each trial. Positive emotion did not appear to have the same impact as fear on the amygdala and visual areas involving attention.

Participants used a computerized procedure to continuously rate their feelings as they viewed backwardly masked faces designed to elicit pleasant, unpleasant, or mixed feelings. The backward masking procedure and grid were poorly calibrated as participants found all conditions to be unpleasant. Pottery is a kind of craft which requires retentive training. The only way to achieve each technique is to practice in repetition till the skill has been absorbed into the hands and body of the practitioner. The most obvious problematic achievement in pottery skill is ‘wheel throwing’ technique. With the long history in straight forward training, one needs to free the mind and allow oneself be a ‘copy machine’ in order to learn the technique properly. The paradox of traditional practice of having mastered the skill, but could not break through, is one of typical obstruction to many crafters. ‘Flood’ as theme for investigation in clay was an attempt to set up a method in order to find the ‘breaking through’ in term of ‘thinking’ and ‘making’ for traditional pottery practitioner to be relevant in the pace of contemporary surrounding. The investigation was planned to de‐familiarize my perception over my tradition and practice, and it was an eye‐opening to how I positioned myself personally and professionally to the discipline, the society and the world.

Performing Costa Rica: "El Tico" and National Identity

Costa Rica is a small country located in Central America, characterized by having one of the most stable democracies in Latin America. Costa Rica was the first country in the world to officially abolish its armed forces (1949), following the Civil War in 1948. From the time of its foundation as a Republic, Costa Rica has been defined in terms of homogeneity and socio-economic equality. These two features have been recognized as the main elements of the country's national identity, and the reason for Costa Ricans to be perceived as peaceful and happy individuals. This research utilizes the methodological lens of Performance Studies to analyze these iconic elements of Costa Rican national identity and to challenge the view of Costa Rica as a paradise. Even though the international community continues defining this country in the same manner in which it was defined during the second part of the nineteen century, the reality is that during the last three decades this nation has changed so much that the same definition is not adequate anymore. Street violence in the country has become a threat to citizens of all socio-economic classes, taking away their peace and happiness. I analyze this development and the response by the citizens in an attempt to show that Costa Rica is facing an internal conflict that could have devastating on its society. Many social movements have formed during the last decade to try to bring Costa Rica back to the nation it was at the beginning of the twentieth century. The most important characteristic of these movements is that they try to unmask the country showing that it is not peaceful in an attempt to recover the peace they believed characterized the Costa Rica of their ancestors.
