Este trabalho propõe-se a investigar e refletir, de uma perspectiva discursiva, a função da língua hebraica/segunda língua no processo de ensino-aprendizagem e os principais fatores que incidem neste processo de identificação/identidade, no atual contexto social-histórico da coletividade judaica de São Paulo, representada em sua heterogeneidade pelas escolas judaicas comunitárias: secular/laica e religiosa. A partir do discurso didático-pedagógico que permeia as escolas judaicas comunitárias sobre a língua hebraica, instituída como matéria regular obrigatória na grade escolar na atualidade, visamos a analisar, através dos recortes de falas de exalunos, professores e diretores, filiações simbólicas imaginárias que constituem seus processos de identificação com a língua hebraica em sua estreita relação com a história, a memória e a linguagem. Para tanto, em nosso gesto de análise recortamos as sequências discursivas obtidas no nosso questionário sobre identificação/identidade linguístico-cultural, a partir de posições-sujeito e da representação imaginária dos ex-alunos, professores e diretores da escola religiosa e secular/laica desdobradas em suas relações contraditórias em torno de saberes sobre língua hebraica no processo de ensino-aprendizagem. Neste recorte específico de saberes buscamos analisar a relação do sujeito com a língua do outro na sociedade e na história. Colocamos em causa nessas análises a concepção de sujeito, de identificação/identidade e o ensino-aprendizagem de segundas línguas/língua estrangeira. Por fim, propomos um olhar sobre o ensino-aprendizagem da língua hebraica, evidenciando a complexidade da relação do sujeito consigo mesmo, com a língua do outro enquanto ser/estar entre línguas. Trata-se do sujeito compreendido em sua heterogeneidade e na sua contradição inerente, como também em determinações histórico-sociais e culturais permeadas pelo inconsciente e pela ideologia que lhe são próprios. Nessa perspectiva a subjetividade contemporânea se produz como um movimento na história com seus deslocamentos e determinações entre o dentro e o fora, o mesmo e o diferente, entre o outro das línguas, espaço de necessárias (re) acomodações na impossibilidade de tudo dizer. / This study aims to investigate and reflect, from a discursive perspective, upon the role of the Hebrew language as a second language on the teaching-learning process and the main factors that influence this process of identification / identity in the current socialhistorical context of the Jewish community of Sao Paulo represented in its heterogeneity by both secular and religious Jewish Community schools. We aim, from the didactic-pedagogical discourse that permeates the Jewish community schools Hebrew language teaching, which is mandatory as a regular subject in grade school today, to analyse from interviews of former students, teachers and principals, imaginary symbolic affiliations which constitute their identification processes with the Hebrew language in its close relationship to history, memory and language. To do so, in our analysis, we study the discursive sequences obtained in our questionnaire about the linguistic - cultural identity / identification, from subjectpositions and the imaginary representation of former students, teachers and principals from secular and religious schools developed in their contradictory relations around knowledge of the Hebrew language in the teaching learning process. In this specific study of this knowledge we seek to analyze the subject\'s relationship to the language of the \"other\" in society and history. We question in these analyses the conception of subject, identification / identity and the teaching - learning of second / foreign languages. Finally, we propose to look at the teaching-learning of a second language, highlighting the complexity of the subject\'s relationship with themselves and with the other\'s language, as the act of being between languages. We view the subjects in their heterogeneity and in their inherent contradiction, as well as historical/social and cultural determinations permeated by their unconsciousness and their ideology. From this perspective, the contemporary subjectivity is produced as a movement in history with its dislocations, and determinations between the in and out, the same and the different, between the other in the languages, a space of necessary re- accommodations in the impossibility to say everything.

Esta dissertação é um estudo sobre o emprego dos empréstimos de origem inglesa coletados nos dicionários de hebraico Even Shoshan de duas épocas diferentes: 1.969 e 2.003, tendo como base para a coleta deste léxico no contexto histórico de N.S Eisenstadt. O objetivo é observar quais as palavras que podem ser utilizadas para exemplificar a entrada de vocábulos de origem inglesa no léxico da língua hebraica, na edição mais antiga do dicionário. Outro propósito é verificar alguns acréscimos importantes do dicionário de 2.003 e ainda, a permanência ou não dos vocábulos mais antigo na reedição. / This dissertation is a study on the use of loans from English origin collected in the Even Shoshan dictionary of two different periods: 1.969 and 2.003, and as a basis for the collection of the historical context of lexicon NS Eisenstadt. The objective is to observe which words can be used to illustrate the entry of words of English origin in the lexicon of Hebrew, in the oldest edition of the dictionary. Another purpose is to check some important additions to the dictionary in 2.003 and also the presence or not of oldest words in the reprint.

The problem of this thesis is: To determine whether there are Hebraic idioms in the Small Plates of Nephi in the Book of Mormon that have been retained in translation. An idiom is defined as any peculiar genius of the language: grammatical, syntactical, or verbal imagery. Non-Hebraic idioms were not considered.The assumptions underlying the problem are:1. The Book of Mormon is a record of the Nephites whose cultural, social, and lingual milieu originated in Israel.2. The Book of Mormon was originally written according to a Hebrew pattern of thought and communication.3. Joseph Smith, as a young man inexperienced with languages and inept by training as a translator, tended to translate literally.

This thesis has been a study of possible lexical Hebraisms occurring in the Book of Mormon in the sections entitled "The Words of Mormon" through "Moroni." A Hebraism was defined as any word or phrase which appeared to be a literal rendering of a Hebrew lexicographic mode of speech, in that the English had a usage or connotation which was not normal; whereas, if translated literally into Hebrew it would represent standard usage. Nearly two hundred such items were found, some one hundred twenty of which were discussed in the body of the thesis. Of these, nouns contributed over sixty examples, verbs more than thirty and the remainder were distributed among the rest of the parts of speech. This accumulation of Hebraisms could be evidence either of Joseph Smith's exceptional ability to recall biblical wording while under the influence of the Holy Spirit or evidence of Hebraic wording in the original coming through in Joseph Smith's translation.

Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 1991. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: One of the most vexing questions in the exegetical research on the Psalms has been the establishing of
the identity of the suppliant who refers to himself as the cani. Many scholars have endeavoured to
study the meaning and significance of this word, but it is still not satisfactorily resolved. The weakness
of these studies can be traced back to two factors:
(1) an exaggerated over-confidence in the etymological method of analysis, and
(2) the implementation of inadequate and incomplete semantic methods.
This investigation starts out with the hypothesis that the meaning of cani must be determined in terms
of both its macro and micro leve~. Thus, the meaning of this designation will be established
synchronically, as well as in terms of an associative field. In this way the semantic field of cani can be
.demarcated in light of its immediate lexical, as well as its wider associative field.
A close reading of the Psalms in which cani appears, reveals that a triangular relationship is depicted
between certain actants. The drama tis personae occupying the following roles in this triangle are:
(1) Yahweh asjudge and saviour,
(2) the cani as suppliant and victim, and
(3) .the antagonist as oppressor and blasphemer.
In order to establish the identity of the cani it was necessary to investigate its synonyms and antonyms
within this complex triangular structure. Within such a semantic framework it has been determined that
the stereotype translation equivalent "poor" is both inadequate and misleading. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Een van die mees kwellende vrae in die moderne Psalmeksegese is die raaisel aangaande die identiteit
van die cani. Baie geleerdes het gepoog om die betekenis van hierdie woord te bepaal, maar tot nou toe
is die prableem nog nie bevredigend opgelos nie as gevolg van:
(1) te swaar klem wat op die etimologie van die woord geplaas is, of
(2) onvoldoende semantiese metodes wat gebruik is in die ondersoek van hierdie term.
Hierdie studie gaan uit van die hipotese dat die betekenis van cani op beide makro- en mikrovlak
vasgestel moet word. Die betekenis moet sinkronies sowel as in terme van 'n assosiatiewe veld bepaal
word. Op hierdie wyse kan die semantiese veld afgebaken word op grand van die onmiddellike
leksikale sowel as die wyere assosiatiewe veld.
Verder is daar ook vasgestel dat in die Psalms waarin cani voorkom, daar gewoonlik sprake is van 'n
driehoeksverhouding. Die dramatis personae is:
(1) Jahwe as rigter en redder,
(2) die cani as aangeklaagde/smekeling en slagoffer en
(3) die antagonis as onderdrukker en aanklaerllasteraar.
Om die identiteit van die cani vas te stel, was dit nodig om die sinonieme sowel as die antonieme van
hierdie term binne so 'n driehoekige struktuur te ondersoek. Binne so 'n semantiese raamwerk is
vasgestel dat die stereotipe vertalingsekwivalent "arm" beide onvoldoende en misleidend is.

A discourse-functional description of participant reference in Biblical Hebrew narrativeRunge, Steven Edward 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (DLitt (Ancient Studies. Biblical Languages))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / Each language has some means or system of referring to participants. This system of reference includes a participant’s initial introduction, continuing reference to the participant, as well as reintroduction after some period of absence. A number of morphological, syntactic and pragmatic issues impinge upon the kinds of encoding used to refer to participants in various contexts. The primary concern of this study is to provide a cross-linguistic, discourse-functional description of the encoding of participants in Biblical Hebrew narrative. Our description is based on the analysis of a preliminary test corpus of Exod 1-12, which is then applied to our dissertation corpus of Gen 12-25. In order to narrow the scope of the project, the data considered in this dissertation will be limited to the corpora of Exod 1-12 and Gen 12-25. It will not consider embedded reported speeches, but instead focuses exclusively and exhaustively on the narrative proper of these two corpora.
Dooley and Levinsohn (2001:112) have identified three basic linguistic functions a participant reference system must be capable of accomplishing:
• Semantic: “identify the referents unambiguously, distinguishing them from other possible ones”. In other words, the reader must be able to track ‘who did what to whom’,
• Processing: “overcome disruptions in the flow of information”,
• Discourse-pragmatic: “signal the activation status and prominence of the referents or the actions they perform”.
We propose that these three functions are not discrete categories, but represent a hierarchical entailment scheme. In other words, overencoding a participant to accomplish the processing function at the same time accomplishes a semantic function of identifying the participant. The study begins by providing a description of the default encoding based on the semantic and cognitive constraints present in various discourse contexts. Our methodology is to develop a set of default encoding principles based on the semantic function of participant reference which can account for as much of the attested data as possible. These default principles are also used to identify pragmatically-motivated departures from the default norms. The non-default encoding is construed as explicitly marking the presence of some linguistic feature.
The non-default encoding data are then grouped based on the pragmatic effects they achieve, and are described in light of attested cross-linguistic principles. We claim that the processing function of participant reference is accomplished in Biblical Hebrew through the redundant relexicalization of agents. These redundant NPs have the pragmatic effect of segmenting the discourse into distinct developments. Next we describe the pragmatic use of referring expressions as accomplishing the discourse-pragmatic function of thematic highlighting. Finally, we describe participant encoding which exceeds that necessary for the processing function as accomplishing a second discourse-pragmatic function of cataphorically highlighting a following speech or event. The above-mentioned model is ultimately applied to Gen 27 to demonstrate its explanatory value for exposition of Biblical Hebrew narrative.

Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis offers a description of the semantic potential of the Biblical Hebrew lexeme '7l! in
Genesis, Psalms, and Chronicles according to a cognitive linguistic perspective. This specific
linguistic approach offers a theoretical framework of how humans cognitively organize
lexical meaning, which is advantageous for highly polysemous lexemes, such as '7lJ. The need
for this study arises because existing Biblical Hebrew resources do not utilize such a
framework as is evidenced by their lists of translation equivalents, rather than full
descriptions of meanings, and their lack of a clearly defined semantic model underlying their
lexical treatment. However, they do provide a starting point that can be built upon with a
cognitive linguistic based methodology. Such a methodology is found in Tyler and Evans
(2007) case study of over, a frequent English translation of '7lJ. Tyler and Evans (2007)
present how to determine the most prototypical semantic sense (i.e., the Proto-Scene) and
how to distinguish between other distinct semantic senses, all of which represent the lexeme's
semantic potential. This thesis heuristically utilizes this methodology while strongly
considering three other factors. First, the syntactic frame surrounding '7l! is evaluated to assess
how syntactic information, specifically verbal valency, contributes to the preposition's
semantic value. Second, the frequency of each semantic category is assessed to determine
possible insight into prototypicality within the defined corpus. Third, a radial structure is
proposed to represent the semantic relationships between the prototypical and nonprototypical
categories. This type of organization illustrates a clearly defined semantic model
underlying the lexical treatment.
This study first describes the Proto-Scene, which involves one entity over or upon another.
Then, fifteen other distinct semantic categories of '7l! are presented within a radial structure
(i.e. The Vertical Cluster: More, Superior, and Control; Contingent Locative;
Accompaniment, In, To, Oppositional, For, Frontal, Causal, Norm, Focus of Attention,
Instrumental, and Psalms Titles). Finally, the various senses for the morphologically complex
lexemes are proposed. These include '7l!1;1 (i.e. From Upon, Away From, Above, and
Contingent Locative) and '7l!=? (i.e. As Concerning). / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie tesis heskryf die semantiese potensiaal van die Byhelse Hehreeuse lekseem ?~ in
