Thoreau's Use of Imagery in "Walden"Sullivan, Jennifer Sims 12 1900 (has links)
It is the purpose of this paper to demonstrate the nature of Thoreau's use of organic imagery by tracing recurrent symbols that represent key concepts and provide unity and coherence throughout Walden. By charting the patterns of imagery in Walden, one can observe Thoreau's movement from an initially pessimistic view of man's present state to one of transcendental optimism and hope for freedom in the future.

The main purpose on this research is to deal with some aspects that come up along the drawing of the character Orion, the main character of Henry Bauchau\'s L\'Enfant Bleu. This research aims to shed light on the mechanisms used by the author to make a fictional character up from a living source, without, nevertheless, mixing it up with that source. From then on, the analysis will follow the dictations of Lionel - Bauchau Psychoanalyst\'s patient, who has inspired the character Orion - and will retrace its steps, from the document of psychotherapeutical work which leads into the novel published in 2004, in Belgium. This work is about comparing some dictations of Lionel (shelved at Fonds Henry Bauchau) with Orion\'s \"dictations of anguish\", counting rescriptures and erasures in the several versions of the book. They are available at the Archives and Museum of Literature of the Royal Library of Belgium. Also, we will analyze the dictations of Orion created by Bauchau without immediate inspiration from Lionel texts. In both cases the research intends to give special attention to the process of creating the language of Orion character, because we understand that language is central in building the character in question. Therefore, we will discuss issues such as: general structure of the work and work plans; Biography and Fiction, Language and Paranoia.

The 'munus triplex' in the English separatist tradition, 1580 to 1620, with particular attention to Henry Barrow and Henry AinsworthGessner, Timothy Craig January 2016 (has links)
This study explores the use of the doctrine of the offices of Christ (prophet, priest, and king) in the literature of the English separatists Henry Barrow (c.1550-1593) and Henry Ainsworth (1569-1622). No study to date explores the English separatists’ use of the doctrine in ecclesiological debates. During the period 1580 to 1620 the doctrine was more commonly referenced when discussing soteriology. Barrow and Ainsworth provide some of the clearest expressions of the doctrine of the offices of Christ in separatist works and their steadfastness in those beliefs in light of opposition make them good candidates for this research. This study sets out to answer the question: what was the significance of participation by the elect in the offices of Christ as used in Barrow and Ainsworth’s writings? This research focuses on the theology of Barrow and Ainsworth and does not consider the social or experiential aspects of their professed beliefs. This study provides a detailed analysis of the writings of Barrow and Ainsworth particularly noting their use of the offices of Christ in discussions of the visible church. It then examines the relationship of Barrow and Ainsworth’s Christology and ecclesiology, expressed through the offices of Christ, in their understanding of the visible church. Finally, this research compares their usage with works published in England from 1580 to 1620, considering whether their usage was distinct. Its findings challenge the traditional historiographical suggestions that purity, polity, discipline, and covenant were the central themes of Barrow and Ainsworth’s ecclesiology. This research suggests that, for Barrow and Ainsworth, the visible church was the visible expression of Christ on earth and the continuation of his earthly ministry begun at the incarnation. They believed that the visible church was the result of union with Christ, not the means of it. Through union with Christ, all the elect participated in Christ’s offices. Barrow and Ainsworth’s understanding of the visible church incorporated their understanding of Christ’s continuing work expressed in his offices of prophecy, priesthood, and kingship. Christ was immediately present in his visible church, working in the elect and through the elect as prophets, priests, and kings. The visible elect, when gathered, became the body of Christ on earth and as his body they continued the work of prophecy, priesthood, and kingship that he had begun.

Caminhos cruzados: a correspondência entre Henry James e Robert Louis Stevenson / Crossed paths: the correspondence between Henry James and Robert Louis StevensonBedran, Marina Miguel 22 February 2013 (has links)
Annotated translation of the correspondence between Henry James (New York, 1843 London, 1916) and Robert Louis Stevenson (Edinburg, 1850 Samoa, 1894), unpublished in Portuguese. The correspondence began in December 1884 and lasted for a decade. The letters reveal an unlikely friendship between two very different writers and a shared concern for the art of fiction. The material examined sheds light on an important discussion about literature at a decisive moment, on the eve of the transformations that it was to undergo at the beginning of the twentieth century. The introductory essay seeks to recreate the course of this discussion and point some of its implications.

An introduction and analysis of Henry Lindeman’s Method for saxophoneChen, Yiqun 01 May 2017 (has links)
In the early twentieth century, the saxophone was a new instrument in the United States. However, its popularity quickly grew as the instrument was featured in many genres of music, most notably military bands and jazz bands. Instrumental manufacturers sold millions of saxophones as demand for the instrument increased. However since the saxophone was so new, there was a lack of quality instruction. As a result, the general playing level of saxophonists was low.
Saxophonist Henry Lindeman published one of the first comprehensive method books for the instrument in the United States in 1934. The book was the product of Lindeman’s extensive research into the fundamentals of saxophone playing. The book was a success after it was published, and Lindeman’s reputation as a teacher grew.
The Lindeman Method discusses all of the fundamental aspects of saxophone playing in great detail including the following: breathing, posture, embouchure, tone production, finger technique, vibrato, melody playing, and articulation.
Lindeman’s book had a lasting effect on how saxophone is taught, as all of his fundamental concepts are generally still approached in the same manner in modern saxophone pedagogy. Lastly, the method book itself continues to be used, thanks to Lindeman’s students and their students and so forth.
