Efficient Bandwidth Reservation Strategies for Data Movements on High Performance Networks

Zuo, Liudong 01 August 2015 (has links)
Many next-generation e-science applications require fast and reliable transfer of large volumes of data, now frequently termed as ``big data", with guaranteed performance, which is typically enabled by the bandwidth reservation service in high-performance networks (HPNs). Users normally specify the properties and requirements of their data transfers in the bandwidth reservation requests (BRRs), and want to make bandwidth reservations on the HPNs to satisfy the requirements of their data transfers. The challenges of the bandwidth reservation arise from the requirements desired by both the users and the bandwidth reservation service providers of the HPNs. We focus on two important bandwidth reservation problems formulated from the combinations of the requirements from both users and the bandwidth reservation service providers of the HPNs: (i) Problem of scheduling all BRRs in one batch while achieving their best average data transfer earliest completion time and shortest duration, and (ii) Problem of scheduling two generic types of BRRs concerning data transfer reliability with different objectives and constraints in unreliable HPNs that are subject to node and link failures. We prove the two subproblems of the first problem are NP-complete problems, and fast and efficient heuristic algorithms are proposed. While the two subproblems of the second problem can be optimally solved in polynomial time. The corresponding optimal algorithms and proofs are given. We conduct extensive simulations to compare the performance of the proposed heuristic and optimal algorithms with naive scheduling algorithms and the algorithms currently used in production network in various performance metrics. The performance superiority of the proposed heuristic and optimal algorithms is verified.

Development of High performance Concrete Composites Using Class F Fly Ash and PCC Bottom Ash, and a Statistical Model to Predict Compressive Strength of Similar Concrete Composites

Puri, Rajnish 01 December 2015 (has links)
AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION OF RAJNISH PURI, for the Doctorate of Philosophy Degree in ENGINEERING SCIENCE WITH CONCENTRATION IN CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING, presented on APRIL 15, 2015 at Southern Illinois University Carbondale TITLE: DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH PERFORMANCE CONCRETE COMPOSITES USING CLASS F FLY ASH AND PCC BOTTOM ASH, AND A STATISTICAL MODEL TO PREDICT COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF SIMILAR CONCRETE COMPOSITES ADVISOR: Dr. Sanjeev Kumar It is a common knowledge that the use of concrete is as old as the evolution of human civilization. People have always dreamed beyond the dotted lines and so does the usage of concrete. With the rapid industrialization and globalization, the journey from ordinary concrete to high performance concrete (HPC) has been swift and remarkable. The diversification and utilization of high performance concrete has given the tool in the hands of engineers and architects who can now design and execute buildings of any shape and size deemed impractical a few decades ago. The aim of this research was to develop high performance concrete composites having different percentages of Illinois Class “F” fly ash and bottom ash by replacing the appropriate proportions of Type 1 portland cement and fine aggregate, respectively. The target was to develop high performance concrete composites that have compressive strength of 8,000 psi (55 Mpa) after 28 days of curing in water with a slump of 4±½” (102mm ± 13mm) and air content between 4 and 6 percent. In order to achieve the targeted air content, an air entraining agent DARAVAIR 1400 was used. The water-cement ratio of 0.3 was maintained throughout the research and to achieve the targeted slump, high-range water reducer ADVA 140M was used. The engineering parameters of the high performance concrete composites and an equivalent control mix were evaluated by conducting a detailed laboratory study which included several tests, e.g., slump, fresh air content, compressive strength, splitting-tensile strength, flexural strength, resistance to rapid freezing and thawing, sealed shrinkage and free swelling, and rapid chloride permeability. The results presented show that all high performance concrete composites developed in this study achieved the targeted compressive strength of 8,000 psi (55 MPa) after 28 days of curing in water. The results of the durability tests show that the concrete composites developed in this study have trends similar to that of an equivalent conventional concrete. Based, on the results of this study, it was concluded that the concrete composites have potential to be used on real world projects and thus help the environment by substantially reducing the amount of fly ash and bottom ash going to ash ponds or landfills. Based on the experimental test result data, a detailed statistical analysis was conducted to develop an empirical model to predict compressive strength of similar concrete composites for a given amount of fly ash, bottom ash, and curing period. Additional laboratory tests were performed to validate the mathematical model.

Korndorfer, Jonas Henrique Muller January 2016 (has links)
Modern high performance systems comprise thousands to millions of processing units. The development of a scalable parallel application for such systems depends on an accurate mapping of application processes on top of available resources. The identification of unused resources and potential processing bottlenecks requires good performance analysis. The trace-based observation of a parallel program execution is one of the most helpful techniques for such purpose. Unfortunately, tracing often produces large trace files, easily reaching the order of gigabytes of raw data. Therefore tracebased performance analysis tools have to process such data to a human readable way and also should be efficient to allow an useful analysis. Most of the existing tools such as Vampir, Scalasca, TAU have focus on the processing of trace formats with a fixed and well-defined semantic. The corresponding file format are usually proposed to handle applications developed using popular libraries like OpenMP, MPI, and CUDA. However, not all parallel applications use such libraries and so, sometimes, these tools cannot be useful. Fortunately, there are other tools that present a more dynamic approach by using an open trace file format without specific semantic. Some of these tools are the Paraver, Pajé and PajeNG. However the fact of being generic comes with a cost. These tools very frequently present low performance for the processing of large traces. The objective of this work is to present performance optimizations made in the PajeNG tool-set. This comprises the development of a parallelization strategy and a performance analysis to set our gains. The original PajeNG works sequentially by processing a single trace file with all data from the observed application. This way, the scalability of the tool is very limited by the reading of the trace file. Our strategy splits such file to process several pieces in parallel. The created method to split the traces allows the processing of each piece in each thread. The experiments were executed in non-uniform memory access (NUMA) machines. The performance analysis considers several aspects like threads locality, number of flows, disk type and also comparisons between the NUMA nodes. The obtained results are very promising, scaling up the PajeNG about eight to eleven times depending on the machine.

Study of load distribution measures for high-performance applications / Estudos de medidas de distribuição de carga para aplicação de alto desempenho

Rodrigues, Flavio Alles January 2016 (has links)
Load balance is essential for parallel applications to perform at their highest possible levels. As parallel systems grow, the cost of poor load distribution increases in tandem. However, the dynamic behavior the distribution of load possesses in certain applications can induce disparities in computational loads among resources. Therefore, the process of repeatedly redistributing load as execution progresses is critical to achieve the performance necessary to compute large scale problems with such characteristics. Metrics quantifying the load distribution are an important facet of this procedure. For these reasons, measures commonly used as load distribution indicators in HPC applications are investigated in this study. Considering the dynamic and recurrent aspect in load balancing, the investigation examines how these metrics quantify load distribution at regular intervals during a parallel application execution. Six metrics are evaluated: percent imbalance, imbalance percentage, imbalance time, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis. The analysis reveals the virtues and deficiencies each metric has, as well as the differences they register as descriptors of load distribution progress in parallel applications. As far as we know, an investigation as the one performed in this work is unprecedented.

Manoel, Joanna Wittckind January 2016 (has links)
Analysis of impurities is an important step in quality control of pharmaceutical ingredients and final products. From drug synthesis or excipients, even in small concentrations, impurities may affect efficacy and safety. In the present study two chromatographic methods were developed and validated for high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for the assessment of besifloxacin and its synthesis impurity, one with isocratic and another with gradient elution. Analyses by HPLC in isocratic elution mode were performed using Cyano column maintained at 25 °C. Mobile phase was composed of 0.5% triethylamine (pH 3.0): acetonitrile (88:12 v/v) eluted at a flow rate of 1.0 ml/min with detection at 330 nm. The method with gradient elution was carried out with the same column and mobile phase components modifying only proportion between organic and aqueous phase during analysis. The procedures have been validated according to internationally accepted guidelines, obtaining results within acceptable limits. The methods presented a linear response from 140-260 μg/mL for besifloxacin and from 0.3 to 2.3 mg/mL for impurity. With the injection volume of 20 μL, the limit od detection and limit of quantitation were, respectively, 0.07 and 0.3 μg/mL. Precision was achieved for all analyses, obtaining inter-day RSD equal to 6.47 and 6.36 for impurity A with isocratic and gradient elution, respectively. The accuracy was higher than 99% and robustness exhibited satisfactory results. In the isocratic method was obtained analysis time 25 min and 15 min gradient. The number of theoretical plates in the isocratic mode was of the order of 5000 while in the gradient mode was of the order of 45000, that is, gave greater efficiency of the column by changing the mobile phase composition during elution. In raw material of besifloxacin and pharmaceutical product used in this study, related impurities were present but the impurity A was not detected. The proposed methods, considering the limit of quantitation, can be in quantitative determination of impurity A in the analysis of besifloxacin raw material, as well as in ophthalmic suspension.

Avaliação de estabilidade de derivação farmacêutica hospitalar de vigabatrina

Ayres, Márcio Vinícius January 2016 (has links)
Vigabatrin (VGB) is an anticonvulsant drug that has only solid dosage form available for use. In hospital, due to lack of medicines in liquid dosage form, extemporaneous preparations are prepared from tablets and capsules to adapt the administration of the prescribed dose. However, the lack of stability studies may compromise the efficacy and safety of these preparations. The aim of this study was to analyze the chemical stability of VGB extemporaneous preparation from tablets at storage conditions in different temperatures and variations of packaging used. The analysis of VGB extemporaneous preparations were performed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The method described in British Pharmacopoeia (2016) was co-validated for specificity, linearity, precision and accuracy. VGB extemporaneous preparations were prepared in triplicate and placed in amber glass and PET bottles, which were stored under three different conditions: at room temperature (15 to 30 °C), under refrigeration (2 to 8 °C), and oven (40 °C). Samples of preparations stored at room temperature and refrigeration were collected every 7 days along 35 days. The same was done for solutions kept at 40 °C, but for a period of 28 days. It was also analyzed the preparations pH for each sampling time VGB extemporaneous preparations were analyzed by HPLC and demonstrated variations within the limits of British Pharmacopoeia (2016) up to 21 days in amber glass and PET bottles at room and refrigerated temperatures. VGB content for preparations kept in oven decreased above 10% after 7 days of study. The lowest pH change occurred in amber glass bottle stored under refrigeration. Results of this study can be applied as a reference for VGB extemporaneous preparation in hospital, once it was demonstrated the reliability of storage time interval and proper conditions for the use. Thus, pediatric patients with fractionated doses or patients using nasogastric probe will have adequately prepared extemporaneous preparations, reducing the risk of dilution errors and microbiological contamination.

Malfatti, Guilherme Meneguzzi January 2017 (has links)
Two of the major drivers of increased performance in single-thread applications - increase in operation frequency and exploitation of instruction-level parallelism - have had little advances in the last years due to power constraints. In this context, considering the intrinsic imprecision-tolerance (i.e., outputs may present an acceptable level of noise without compromising the result) of many modern applications, such as image processing and machine learning, approximate computation becomes a promising approach. This technique is based on computing approximate instead of accurate results, which can increase performance and reduce energy consumption at the cost of quality. In the current state of the art, the most common way of exploiting the technique is through neural networks (more specifically, the Multilayer Perceptron model), due to the ability of these structures to learn arbitrary functions and to approximate them. Such networks are usually implemented in a dedicated neural accelerator. However, this implementation requires a large amount of chip area and usually does not offer enough improvements to justify this additional cost. The goal of this work is to propose a new mechanism to address approximate computation, based on approximate reuse of functions and code fragments. This technique automatically groups input and output data by similarity and stores this information in a sofware-controlled memory. Based on these data, the quantized values can be reused through a search to this table, in which the most appropriate output will be selected and, therefore, execution of the original code will be replaced. Applying this technique is effective, achieving an average 97.1% reduction in Energy-Delay-Product (EDP) when compared to neural accelerators.

Residual Stresses Induced by Welding in High Performance Steel

Erlingsdotter Stridsman, Rebecca, Månsson, Felicia January 2018 (has links)
Today, high performance steel as a construction material is treated as conventional steel in the European standards. Referring to the Eurocodes, the buckling curves for dimensioning of steel constructions only presents values up to steel grade S460, meaning that the full potential of high performance steel is not considered. If the amplitude of the residual stresses in high performance steel can be confirmed to be smaller than in conventional steel, more slender cross sections could be obtained when using high performance steel, HPS. One challenge with the residual stress patterns for HPS is its variation obtained in different studies, where new resulting residual stress patterns are found depending on plate thickness and manufacturing methods for the steel.   Residual stresses in steel are stresses not associated with external forces. The stresses are instead caused by internal forces, such as differencing temperature. Residual stresses can therefore be connected to stresses due to welding. Considering HPS, it is distinctive from conventional steel in the way that it has higher performance in tensile strength, toughness, weldability, corrosion and cold formability.   This study has been performed by Finite Element Modelling in the software Abaqus and by performing an experiment. The objective of this study was to find residual stress patterns and to compare the results with existing residual stress patterns according to the European Convention for Constructional Steel (ECCS) and the Swedish handbook for steel constructions provided by Boverket (BSK 07), but also to compare the results with previous studies.   The influence of temperature changes due to welding was studied for a L-section made of steel S690QL, where only the longitudinal stresses were considered during the research. The numerical analysis in Abaqus was performed using a DFlux subroutine, which is written in Fortran language. Furthermore, the analysis was divided into subparts; one heat transfer analysis and two three-dimensional stress analyses for two different boundary conditions, with the purpose of obtaining results in terms of temperature and stresses for further analysis. The experimental work was performed on three specimens using Gas Metal Arc Welding, where thermocouples and strain gages were used for measuring temperature and strains respectively.   Conclusions of this study were that the resulting residual stress pattern obtained the experiment was similar to the stress pattern for a L-section in BSK 07, while the resulting residual stress pattern obtained in the numerical analysis was mostly comparable to ECCS, but with similarities to BSK 07 and a previous study by Cherenenko & Kennedy (1990).  Moreover, the resulting residual tensile stresses obtained in the study had the same amplitude or lower than what is specified in BSK 07.

Stringhini, Sérgio January 2010 (has links)
When analysing the state championships of gymnastic artistic summaries of the last years, it is possible to observe a huge reduction of the numbers of practitioners with 12 years old. The desistance in this age group has become a problem for the high performance artistic gymnastics (AG) in Rio Grande do Sul (RS). Due to the lack of specific studies about this sport, this research aims to: (1) analyse the factors that leads to desistance from the high performance gymnasts in RS; (2) identify and describe the positive and negative factors of the development in the gymnasts training; (3) correlate the kind of training that is applied to the gymnasts with the results that are obtained in their careers; (4) verify if is there a psychological attendance for the gymnasts and what kind of attendance was being given; (5) correlate the influence of precocious initiation with the gymnasts training; (6) verify the influence of the socio-economic level in the development of the gymnasts; (7) identify and analyse the role of the family in the process of gymnasts training; (8) identify and analyse the role of the coacher in the process of gymnasts training. Ten ex-gymnasts were selected for this research, who had trained in RS and had participated of Brazilian Championships and had given-up from artistic gymnastics from January 1998. Their parents were also selected. The semi-structured interview was used in two versions: one for the ex-gymnasts and another one for their parents. The results point out that there are fourteen reasons for the desistance from high performance gymnastics, and that there are positive items like the acquired discipline to accomplish other activities that are not related with sports.

It is potent against Grampositive microorganisms, as Staphylococcus and Streptococcus. Analytical methods for quantitative determination of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride is important due to its therapeutic potential, wide use in antimicrobial therapy and low cost. Moreover, it is known that the poor quality antibiotic product is direct related development of resistant strains, as consequence of subtherapeutic doses administration. Thus, it is important to develop efficient analytical methods for quality control commercialized products. In this work, analytical methods for determination of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride were validated: (i) microbiological assay, turbidimetric method at concentration range 14.0 to 56.0 μg/mL, using Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228 IAL 2150 as indicator microorganism, accuracy 99.71% and quantitation of 102.27; (ii) UV spectrophotometry at 275 nm with concentration range of 2.0 to 7.0 μg/mL, using water as solvent, with accuracy of 101.51% and quantitation of 99.79%; (iii) Derivative visible spectrophotometric method at 386.4 nm, in first derivate, with concentration range of 50.0 a 100.0 μg/mL, using 1.0% ferric chloride as reagent, with accuracy of 99.83% and quantitation of 106.72%; (iv) HPLC method with UV detector at 275 nm using 2.5 M acetic acid (v/v), methanol and acetonitrile (70: 15: 15, v/v/v) as mobile phase and concentration range of 1.0 to 6.0 μg/mL, accuracy of 100.11%, quantitation 103.25% and mean retention time of 2.6 minutes; (v) Indirect titrimetric method using bromate/bromide solution in acid medium as reagent in concentration range of 1.0 to 11.0 mg/mL, with accuracy of 100.28% and quantitation of 98.97%.
