Transsituated publics : from Christine Jorgensen to Holly Woodlawn

Young, Tatiana Kalaniopua 13 July 2011 (has links)
The single most recognized transgender woman in the 1950s and throughout much of the 1960s, Christine Jorgensen symbolized in many ways the quintessential white, upper-middle-class woman and the medicalized standard by which other transgender women were measured, including poor transgender women and transgender women of color. In the late 1960s and 1970s, however, a new class of transgender women would come to denounce such an image. Holly Woodlawn, a cult icon in the late 1960s and early 1970s, for example, viewed Christine as outdated and out-of-sync with her own gendered desires for expression. Holly gained notoriety for her outrageous role in Andy Warhol's film Trash (1970). In the film, she plays the glamorous and co-dependent role of the counter-culture sex addicted welfare queen. In the film, she denounces traditional transsexual women narratives and engenders instead new forms of gendered expressions unencumbered by sex change anxieties. Christine and Holly are but two historical transgender icons, who, in the 1950s, 60s and 70s suggested new possibilities for gendered expressions. Their public personas historicize the construction of transgender identity, making visible the classed and racialized privileging of sex change surgery and the alternative expressions embodied by poor transgender women and transgender women of color. Although unable to afford sex change surgery, poor transgender women, in particular, transgender women of color, embodied new models of gender identity beyond the gendered constructs of whiteness. / text

Återinventering av martorn (Eryngium maritimum) på Gotska Sandön / Re-inventory of Sea holly (Eryngium maritimum) on Gotska Sandön.

Damström, Oskar January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this report was to investigate if the number and distribution of sea holly (Eryngium maritimum) on the island of Gotska Sandön in the Baltic sea north of Gotland have, and to explore if there is a link between change in plant habitat and change in number of sea holly individuals on the island. To do so a plant inventory was made in 2021 and compared to a previous inventory that was done in 2009. The number of individuals was counted and the habitat which they grey in was noted. Moreover, the presence of japanese rose (Rosa rugosa), and the expansion of scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) was also noted in each locality where sea holly was found. The number of individuals of sea holly on Gotska Sandön went from 9353 in 2009 to 8310 in 2021, mainly becuase of fewer individuals in the largest locality of sea holly on the island. This is probably due to an increase in the proportion of individuals growing on the wooded dunes compared to 2009 and an expansion of japanese rose in the locality. The localities where no scots pine or japanese rose grew in the grey- and white dunes the individuals of sea holly stayed the same or increased in numbers. Despite this, no link could be found between the change in sea holly individual numbers and what plan habitat they grew on Gotska Sandön 2021.

Creating a sense of place or simply a good parking space?:evolution of the historic town squares of Mississippi

Rogers, Amanda Michelle 09 August 2008 (has links)
Mississippi has a surprising amount and variety of town squares. The square provides a central, pedestrian civic space in the towns in which they are located. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the evolution of town squares in Mississippi. The method employed was historical research of primary sources that included historic photographs and Sanborn Fire Insurance maps. The photographs were examined using the The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties investigating such elements as vegetation, site furnishings, and circulation patterns. Canton, Holly Springs, and Lexington were chosen to be studied in more detail to give a clearer picture of how squares have changed over time. It was determined that there are approximately 69 towns with squares in Mississippi. The most numerous types of squares used are Shelbyville squares. The vitality of the square varies greatly from town to town.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Ronaldo de Faria.pdf: 828724 bytes, checksum: bbd633b3e1cd2355c61801d2e4d7e281 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-01-13 / The present work is an intention to (re)discuss, on a first moment, the absolute" concept of Invented Tradition, using other understandings and interpretations about Tradition, aiming to make an analogy between the theory of Marcel Mauss (1974) In: Ensaio Sobre a Dádiva (The Assay about the Gift), with the Fogaréu Procession, identifying the Holly Week as a Christian Tradition. On a second moment, I present the historical trajectory of the Holly Week, to, after that, analyze the paths traced by the Fogaréu Procession until its arrival at the City of Goiás, with a special approach to the meaning of the fire , main symbolic element of the Procession. I still present how traditions, in special the religious ones, are maintained by the OVAT Organização Vilaboense de Artes e Tradição (a local Organization for arts and tradition). And, finally, I annalize two tourist points of view over the Fogaréu Procession. First, within a perspective related to the Cultural Tourism, and later, to the Religious Tourism. The final objective is to demonstrate the relation between the maintenance of traditions using the tourist activity.

Song for the planet : educator perceptions of an environmental school music program

Larder, Elnora 17 January 2011 (has links)
This study examines educators’ perceptions of the environmental impact of Holly Ar[n]tzen’s Artist Response musicians’ program for schools. In this case study, Ar[n]tzen and five educators were interviewed about their perceptions of the program’s impact on students at five B.C. elementary schools. The researcher’s “observational narratives” also convey experiential examples of the program in action. Educators perceive that the program provides students and their families with a memorable, nature-focused musical experience that also enhances their understanding of, and concern for, the environment. Based on the six participants’ interviews, the researcher argues that programs like this offer role models for children, enhance community, provide opportunities for crosscurricular learning, and involve multiple intelligences. The study concludes that, despite obstacles, the program engages emotions, raises awareness that enhances students’ decision-making skills, and influences the adults in their lives. Participants also perceived the need for a formal environmental curriculum to be integrated into elementary schools.
